Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Ralstonia solanacearum, a soil-borne plant pathogen, causes lethal wilting disease of more than 200 plants worldwide. This very wide host range covers both monocots and dicots, extending from annual plants to trees and shrubs. Although generally it's considered as a plant pathogen, R. solanacearum behaves primarily as a saprophytic bacterium able to survive for long periods of time in various natural habitats such as surface waters and different types of soils. Epidemiological and ecological studies on pathogen distribution in the environment are seriously hindered by the lack of efficient detection method especially when the concentration of the pathogen is either …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Despite frequent reports on the presence of Blastocystis hominis in human intestinal tract, its pathogenicity remains a matter of intense debate. These discrepancies may be due to the varying pathogenic potential or virulence of the isolates studied. The present study represents the first to investigate both phenotypic and genotypic characteristics of B. hominis obtained from symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals. Symptomatic isolates had a significantly greater size range and lower growth rate in Jones' medium than asymptomatic isolates. The parasite cells of symptomatic isolates exhibited rougher surface topography and greater binding affinity to Canavalia ensiformis (ConA) and Helix pomatia (HPA). The …

Snake Venom L-Amino Acid Oxidases And Their Potential Biomedical Applications, N.H. Tan, S.Y. Fung

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO) occurs widely in snake venoms. The enzyme is highly specific for L-amino acids, and generally hydrophobic amino acids are the best substrates. LAAO is a flavoprotein consisting of two identical subunits, each with a molecular mass of approximately 60 kDa. The purified enzymes are glycoproteins with 3-4 carbohydrate. Deglycosylation of the enzyme did not alter the enzymatic activity but appeared to alter its pharmacological activities. The amino acid sequences of snake venom LAAOs showed a high degree of homology. X-ray structural analysis of LAAO revealed a dynamic active site and the presence of 3 domains: a …

Tubercular Synovitis Mimicking Rheuma Toid Nodules, S.C. Teo, J. George, Tunku Kamarul

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Tubercular tenosynovitis is an uncommon condition and usually affects the upper limb. We report a case of a patient with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus who presented with wrist swelling. The clinical findings were suggestive of rheumatoid nodules, but the radiographic finding of calcification associated with the nodules and marked erosive changes primarily of the radio-carpal joint with sparing of the metacarpal joints led the radiologist to believe that the nodules may not be rheumatoid nodules. The presence of solid and fluid nature of the nodule and hyperechoic small echogenic foci (matted rice bodies within thickened synovium) on ultrasound suggested the presence …

The Synergy Of Toxic Tort Law And Public Health: Lessons From A Century Of Cigarettes, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen Jan 2008

The Synergy Of Toxic Tort Law And Public Health: Lessons From A Century Of Cigarettes, Jean Macchiaroli Eggen

Connecticut Law Review

Toxic torts is a relatively new area of the law, but its seeds were sown a century ago with developments in modern culture. The design, manufacture, and marketing of the cigarette constituted one such development, one with far-reaching legal consequences which continue to challenge the legal system today. This Article is built around Allan M. Brandt’s 2007 public health history of cigarettes, The Cigarette Century. It uses Brandt’s book as a stepping stone to a broader discussion of current critical issues in toxic tort law. The Article begins with a review of the book, then moves into a discussion of …

High Rate Of Recent Transposable Element–Induced Adaptation In Drosophila Melanogaster, Josefa Gonzalez, Kapa Lenkov, Mikhail Lipatov, J. Michael Macpherson, Dmitri A. Petrov

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Although transposable elements (TEs) are known to be potent sources of mutation, their contribution to the generation of recent adaptive changes has never been systematically assessed. In this work, we conduct a genome-wide screen for adaptive TE insertions in Drosophila melanogaster that have taken place during or after the spread of this species out of Africa. We determine population frequencies of 902 of the 1,572 TEs in Release 3 of the D. melanogaster genome and identify a set of 13 putatively adaptive TEs. These 13 TEs increased in population frequency sharply after the spread out of Africa. We argue that …

Chapter 2: Use Of Distillers Co-Products In Diets Fed To Beef Cattle, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Consumers in the United States purchase 64 pounds of beef per year. That beef is considered “high quality” by international standards. In the distant past in the United States, beef was produced with forages, and it still is in most countries of the world today. Beef cattle are ruminants and therefore are able to convert grasses, hays, and crop residues into tasty, nutritious meat. Even today in the United States, about 80% to 90% of the feed required to produce “grain-fed” beef is forage. The U.S. beef produced today is “high quality” because the cattle are fed corn just prior …

Effects Of Prebreeding Body Weight Or Progestin Exposure Before Breeding On Beef Heifer Performance Through The Second Breeding Season, J. L. Martin, K. W. Creighton, Jacqueline A. Musgrave, Terry J. Klopfenstein, R. T. Clark, Don C. Adams, Richard N. Funston

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two experiments evaluated prebreeding target BW or progestin exposure for heifers developed lighter than traditional recommendations. Experiment 1 evaluated the effects of the system on heifer performance through subsequent calving and rebreeding over 3 yr. Heifers (229 kg) were assigned randomly to be developed to 55% of mature BW (299 kg) before a 45-d breeding season (intensive, INT; n = 119) or 50% of mature BW (272 kg) before a 60-d breeding season (relaxed, RLX; n = 142). Prebreeding and pregnancy diagnosis BW were greater (P ≤ 0.006) for INT than RLX heifers. Overall pregnancy rate did not differ (88.4%; …

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Vegf) Isoforms May Regulate Sex-Specific Vascular Development, Cord Formation And Follicle Progression In Developing Gonads, Andrea S. Cupp, Rebecca C. Bott, Renee M. Pohlmann, Robin A. Ten Broeck, Debra T. Clopton Jan 2008

Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Vegf) Isoforms May Regulate Sex-Specific Vascular Development, Cord Formation And Follicle Progression In Developing Gonads, Andrea S. Cupp, Rebecca C. Bott, Renee M. Pohlmann, Robin A. Ten Broeck, Debra T. Clopton

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The ratio of VEGF angiogenic to anti-angiogenic isoforms appears to determine different biological functions in reproduction. Reduced amounts of angiogenic VEGF isoforms inhibit testis sex-specific vasculature and normal cord formation in organ cultures while reduction of inhibitory isoforms increased vasculature and perturbed cords. In the female, using peri-natal ovarian cultures, inhibition of angiogenic VEGFisoforms reduced vascular development and inhibited follicle progression while conversely reductions in inhibitory isoforms or increases in angiogenic isoforms enhanced follicle development. Thus, regulation of the Vegfa gene to produce angiogenic or anti-angiogenic isoforms may be a mechanism to alter sex-specific vascular development, formation of seminiferous cords, …

Board-Invited Review: Use Of Distillers By-Products In The Beef Cattle Feeding Industry, Terry J. Klopfenstein, Galen E. Erickson, Virgil R. Bremer

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The ethanol industry is expanding rapidly. This expansion in production of renewable energy also increases production of by-products. These byproducts, primarily distillers grains plus solubles (DGS), are utilized very efficiently by ruminants. When the starch in corn is fermented to produce ethanol, the remaining nutrients (protein, fat, fiber) are concentrated about 3-fold. Whereas DGS is an excellent protein source for ruminants, the large supply and the price relative to corn make DGS an attractive energy source as well. This is especially important with reduced availability and higher price of corn because of demand by the ethanol industry. A meta-analysis of …
