The Siren Sounds For Nitrogen, Jeremy S. Scholtes Jan 2008

The Siren Sounds For Nitrogen, Jeremy S. Scholtes

Student Articles and Papers

The international community is intensifying its efforts to combat nitrogen pollution, a threat to human health and the environment. In this Article, Jeremy S. Scholtes examines the nature of this type of pollution and the legal instruments currently in place that deal with it. He begins by explaining the theoretical concerns that negotiators must consider when designing legal instruments, recommending that regional hard law instruments in concert with partnership coordination platforms are the most effective tools for addressing nitrogen pollution. He concludes that the 1979 Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution (LRTAP) should be used as the model for developing …

Effects Of Father Absence On Adolescent Depression, Sexual Attitudes, And Substance Use, Nicole M. Hurtack Jan 2008

Effects Of Father Absence On Adolescent Depression, Sexual Attitudes, And Substance Use, Nicole M. Hurtack

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The purpose of the current study was to investigate the relationship between father absence and depression, sexual attitudes, and substance use on adolescents. Data were collected from forty-nine high school students (28 males, 21 females) from ninth to twelfth grade from a private high school in Pennsylvania. The Beck Depression Inventory-II was used to measure levels of depression. A sexual attitudes and substance use, and family demographic survey were also administered. The results of this study provided no support for the hypothesized relationship between adolescent adjustment and father absence. Father absence did not significantly predicted sexual attitudes, depression or substance …

The Rationality Of Preference Construction (And The Irrationality Of Rational Choice), Claire Hill Jan 2008

The Rationality Of Preference Construction (And The Irrationality Of Rational Choice), Claire Hill

Articles

Economists typically assume that preferences are fixed - that people know what they like and how much they like it relative to all other things, and that this rank-ordering is stable over time. But this assumption has never been accepted by any other discipline. Economists are increasingly having difficulty arguing that the assumption is true enough to generate useful predictions and explanations. Indeed, law and economics scholars increasingly acknowledge that preferences are constructed, and that the law itself can help construct preferences. Still, fixed preferences are often treated as a normative ideal: Even if people don't have fixed preferences, they …

Structure-Function Analysis Of The Drosophila Stubble Type Ii Transmembrane Serine Protease, Rachel Morgan Jan 2008

Structure-Function Analysis Of The Drosophila Stubble Type Ii Transmembrane Serine Protease, Rachel Morgan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Hormonally-triggered regulatory hierarchies play a major role in organismal development. Disruption of a single member of such a hierarchy can lead to irregular development and disease. Therefore, knowledge of the members involved and the mechanisms controlling signaling through such pathways is of great importance in understanding how resulting developmental defects occur. Type II transmembrane serine proteases (TTSPs) make up a family of cell surface-associated proteases that play important roles in the development and homeostasis of a number of mammalian tissues. Aberrant expression of TTSPs is linked to several human disorders, including deafness, heart and respiratory disease and cancer. However, the …

Tmdl Bioassessment Sampling Of Benthic Macroinvertebrates For Lake Jesup And Lake Seminary, Gloria Eby Jan 2008

Tmdl Bioassessment Sampling Of Benthic Macroinvertebrates For Lake Jesup And Lake Seminary, Gloria Eby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to obtain a bioassessment using benthic macroinvertebrates to meet TMDL (Total Maximum Daily Load) criteria for an oligotrophic (Lake Seminary) and an eutrophic (Lake Jesup) freshwater system in Seminole County, Florida. Monthly sampling of the benthic macroinverterbrate communities provided important biological data necessary to construct TMDL protocol and trophic state. Since macroinvertebrates are near the base of the food chain, they not only provide a critical role in the natural flow of energy and cycling of nutrients through the food web, but also provide a good indication of water quality by their presence and …

Growth And Survival Of Bacteria In Simulated Martian Conditions, Bonnie Berry Jan 2008

Growth And Survival Of Bacteria In Simulated Martian Conditions, Bonnie Berry

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Escherichia coli and Serratia liquefaciens, two common microbial spacecraft contaminants known to replicate under low atmospheric pressures of 25 mb, were tested for growth and survival in simulated martian conditions. Stressors of high salinity, low temperature, and low pressure were screened alone and in combination to determine how they might affect microbial activity. Growth and survival of E. coli and S. liquefaciens under low temperatures (30, 20, 10, or 5 °C) with increasing concentrations (0, 5, 10, or 20 %) of three salts believed to be present on the surface of Mars (MgCl2, MgSO4, NaCl) were monitored over 7 d. …

Cis-Regulatory Analysis Of The Pigment Cell Differentiation Gene Polyketide Synthase, David Rogers Jan 2008

Cis-Regulatory Analysis Of The Pigment Cell Differentiation Gene Polyketide Synthase, David Rogers

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The analysis of Gene Regulatory Networks (GRNs) is essential to understanding the complete process of embryo development. Elucidating every gene regulatory circuit from maternal regulatory inputs all the way to the activation of differentiation gene batteries is an important step in increasing our understanding of developmental biology. In this work I study the cis-regulatory architecture of a pigment cell differentiation gene, polyketide synthase (SpPks) in the sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. SpPks encodes an enzyme that is responsible for the biosynthesis of the sea urchin pigment echinochrome in larval pigment cells. The analysis of the promoter of a differentiation gene will …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

We conducted a study of the amphibian, reptile, and small mammal community assemblage of Ozark pocket gopher (Geomys bursarius ozarkensis) habitat in north-central Arkansas. We used 2 methods to capture individuals: hand capture and drift fences. During the study, we captured and marked a total of 9 anuran, 4 salamander, 5 lizard, 3 turtle, 16 snake, and 8 small mammal species exclusive of pocket gophers. We found one hatchling three-toed box turtle (Terrapene carolina triunguis) and one rough earth snake (Virginia striatula) inside a pocket gopher burrow and mound, respectively. Additionally, we witnessed both eastern racers (Coluber constrictor) and eastern …

Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Collected From Thirty-Two Missouri Ozark Streams, George L. Harp, Phoebe A. Harp, Samuel B. Mccord

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A previously reported study of the distribution and status of an endemic dragonfly in Missouri emphasized data collected by aerial netting and examination of specimens housed in the Wilbur Enns Museum of Entomology. Dip net samples were also taken, however, to find naiads of the target species at sites where adults might not have been found and to determine whether there were associated species. Forty-one collections were made in 32 Ozark streams between mid-May and early June 1999-2000. Of the 372 taxa identified, Psephenus herricki was the most frequently associated species. Six of the 32 streams either had not been …

Arkansas Endemic Biota: An Update With Additions And Deletions, H. Robison, C. Mcallister, C. Carlton, G. Tucker

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

It has been over a decade since the publication of Robison and Allen (1995) that provided the definitive list of endemic flora and fauna of Arkansas. The present study brings up-to-date the endemic biota of the state. Since 1995, several new species have been described and new discoveries have been made, adding species to the state biota. Other species are deleted and new distributional information on other state endemics is presented. Specifically, 3 new plant species are added to the state list while 4 plant species are deleted. Sixteen new animal species/subspecies are added to the state list while numerous …

Characterizing The Dynamics And Functional Role Of Site-Specific Phosphorylation Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors, John M. Busillo Jan 2008

Characterizing The Dynamics And Functional Role Of Site-Specific Phosphorylation Of G Protein-Coupled Receptors, John M. Busillo

Full-Text Theses & Dissertations

Phosphorylation of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) by GPCR kinases (GRKs) and the subsequent recruitment of arrestin is a well-established paradigm that initiates the process known as desensitization. However, an emerging theme in GPCR regulation is the possibility of differential regulation dictated by the phosphorylation pattern elicited by the different members of the GRK family. Therefore, we have used small interfering RNA-mediated knock down of the GRKs and arrestins in an attempt to better understand how phosphorylation regulates the activity and signaling of the M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (M3 mAChR) and CXCR4, two receptors endogenously expressed in HEK293 cells.

Biological And Photo-Physiological Interactions Between Phytoplankton Functional Types; A Five Year Study In The Western English Channel, James Richard Fishwick

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

Sampling at the western English Channel observatory dates back approximately 100 years, with a more complete sampling programme since 1988. The data set in this study was collected over a five year period between 2001 and 2005. The variables measured allow for a more complete understanding of the ecosystem, this is the only study to have reported the photo-physiology measurements over such time scales. The western English Channel is situated in a boundary zone between the oceanic waters of the Northern Atlantic and the coastal waters of the English Channel. This study has provided substantial evidence that the phytoplankton functional …

The Role Of Stress And Dietary Micronutrients In Fish Health, James Frederick Reeves Jan 2008

The Role Of Stress And Dietary Micronutrients In Fish Health, James Frederick Reeves

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The overall theme of this thesis has been the study of the effects of well known and potentially novel stressors on fish health and how some of these may be modulated by dietary supplements of micronutrients, using both in vitro and in vivo analysis. In vitro experiments with cultured fish cells (EPC-A1, GFSk-S1) evaluated the potential of niacin and selenium to reduce cytotoxicity and genomic instability (DNA damage) induced by ultraviolet radiation exposure, following assay validation with reference toxins. Whilst cytotoxicity was determined by the neutral red retention (NRR) assay, genomic stability was evaluated by either a standard or modified …
