Downflow Limestone Beds For Treatment Of Net-Acidic, Oxic, Iron-Laden Drainage From A Flooded Anthracite Mine, Pennsylvania, Usa: 1. Field Evaluation, Charles A. Cravotta Iii, Suzanne J. Ward
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
Passive-treatment systems that route acidic mine drainage (AMD) through crushed limestone and/or organic-rich substrates have been used to remove the acidity and metals from various AMD sources, with a wide range of effects. This study evaluates treatment of net-acidic, oxic, iron-laden AMD with limestone alone, and with organic-rich compost layered with the limestone. In the fall of 2003, a treatment system consisting of two parallel, 500-m2 downflow cells followed by a 400-m2 aerobic settling pond and wetland was installed to neutralize the AMD from the Bell Mine, a large source of AMD and baseflow to the Schuylkill River …

Attachment Styles And Male Sex Addiction, James L. Zapf, Jay Greiner [email protected], James Carroll
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
This study addresses the adult romantic attachment styles of sexually addicted men. The Sexual Addiction Screening Test and the Experiences in Close Relationships Revised were used to determine the presence of a sexual addiction and the participants’ style of romantic attachment. ANOVA revealed that sexually addicted men are more likely to relate with insecure attachment styles. Specifically, sexually addicted men were found to have higher anxiety F(1, 38) = 6.122, p < .05 and avoidance F(1, 37) = 4.685, p < .05 in their romantic relationships. Treatment for male sexual addicts should address both addiction and relationship insecurity.

Eyes On Your Classroom: Collaborating With Others To Improve Your Practice, Jesse Wilcox
Eyes On Your Classroom: Collaborating With Others To Improve Your Practice, Jesse Wilcox
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
How do you know if you are an effective teacher? Many teachers consider their effectiveness only in terms of student feelings toward the teacher and course, or how their students perform. While students' performance and perceptions are important factors to consider, students typically lack the expertise to provide accurate feedback about teaching and learning. What students enjoy and what is best for them are not necessarily one in the same. Furthermore, students' performance is related to, but not solely determined by, what teachers do. High student performance may occur in spite of poor teaching practices, and students may do poorly …

Ant Diversity In Two Southern Minnesota Tallgrass Prairie Restoration Sites, Pamela M. Kittelson, Monica Paulson Priebe, Phillip J. Graeve
Ant Diversity In Two Southern Minnesota Tallgrass Prairie Restoration Sites, Pamela M. Kittelson, Monica Paulson Priebe, Phillip J. Graeve
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
There is little basic information about ant species richness and abundance in tall grass prairie restorations despite the importance of ants to plant community structure and function. We compared ant abundance and richness, vascular plant cover and richness, and soil compaction at two southern Minnesota grassland restoration sites, a prairie reconstruction and a prairie remnant undergoing rehabilitation. We collected a total of 3,523 ants from 12 different species. Plant species richness ranged from 45 in the prairie reconstruction to 95 in the remnant prairie. We found five more species of ants and significantly higher mean ant species richness per plot …

Responsibility Status Of The Psychopath: On Moral Reasoning And Rational Self-Governance, Paul J. Litton
Responsibility Status Of The Psychopath: On Moral Reasoning And Rational Self-Governance, Paul J. Litton
Faculty Publications
This article does not aim to describe the opposing views and argue for one over the other. Rather, I propose to deflate the debate as far as possible, attempting to reduce the area of disagreement. Meaningful disagreement exists only if there are, or could be, agents who have an undiminished capacity for practical reasoning or rational self-governance, yet truly are incapable of moral reasoning. However, I suggest that the capacity for rational self-governance entails the capacity to comprehend and act on moral considerations; thus, to the extent that an individual truly is incapable of grasping moral reasons, we should expect …

Enzymatic Processing Of Amelogenin During Continuous Crystallization Of Apatite, Vuk Uskoković, M.-K. Kim, W. Li, S. Habelitz
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Dental enamel forms through a protein-controlled mineralization and enzymatic degradation with a nanoscale precision that new engineering technologies may be able to mimic. Recombinant fulllength human amelogenin (rH174) and a matrix-metalloprotease (MMP-20) were employed in a pHstat titration system that enabled a continuous supply of calcium and phosphate ions over several days, mimicking the initial stages of matrix processing and crystallization in enamel in-vitro. Effects on the self-assembly and crystal growth from a saturated aqueous solution containing 0.4 mg/ml rH174 and MMP-20 with the weight ratio of 1:1000 with respect to rH174 were investigated. A transition from nanospheres to fibrous …

Mark A. Griep Publications
The study of primases from model organisms such as Escherichia coli, phage T7 and phage T4 has demonstrated the essential nature of primase function, which is to generate de novo RNA polymers to prime DNA polymerase. However, little is known about the function of primases from other eubacteria. Their overall low primary sequence homology may result in functional differences. To help understand which primase functions were conserved, primase and its replication partner helicase from the pathogenic Gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus were compared in detail with that of E. coli primase and helicase. The conserved properties were to primer initiation …

Evaluation Of Nitrogen Sources For Growth And Production Of Medium-Chain-Length Poly-(3-Hydroxyalkanoates) From Palm Kernel Oil By Pseudomonas Putida Pga1, M.S.M. Annuar, I.K.P. Tan, K.B. Ramachandran
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Selected organic and inorganic nitrogen sources were evaluated for growth of Pseudomonas putida PGA1 and its production of medium-chain-length poly-(3-hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAMCL). The effect of these nitrogen sources on the cells growth, PHAMCL yield, monomer composition and molecular weight when this bacterium was cultivated on saponified palm kernel oil (SPKO) as the major carbon source was investigated. It was found that bacto-peptone gave significantly higher yield of residual biomass (PHA-free biomass) and PHAMCL as compared to ammonium salt, urea, yeast extract and beef extract. No significant difference in the monomer composition of the PHAMCL produced was observed with the different nitrogen …

Bifunctionalized Mesoporous Molecular Sieve For Perchlorate Removal, T.H. Kim, Min Jang, J.K. Park
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Quaternary ammonium functionalized mesoporous media were synthesized for the effective removal of perchlorate. As a support host, mesoporous molecular sieve, SBA-15, was mono- or bifunctionalized with quaternary ammonium ions, N-((trimethoxysilyl)propyl)-N,N,N-trimethylammonium chloride (TSPMC) and N-((trimethoxysilyl)propyl)-N,N,N-tributylammonium chloride (TSPBC), by an incipient wetness impregnation method. Pore structures of the media were characterized by using nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms and an X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The perchlorate adsorption speeds and capacities for the mono- or bifunctionalized SBA-15 were also examined, and compared with a conventional anion exchange resin (IRA-900). All the functionalized SBA-15 showed fast adsorption equilibriums within 10 min, while IRA-900 had a quite …

Biodiesel Fuel Production From Algae As Renewable Energy, A.B.M.S. Hossain, A. Salleh, A.N. Boyce, P. Chowdhury, M. Naqiuddin
Research Publications (2006 to 2010)
Biodiesel is biodegradable, less CO2 and NOx emissions. Continuous use of petroleum sourced fuels is now widely recognized as unsustainable because of depleting supplies and the contribution of these fuels to the accumulation of carbon dioxide in the environment. Renewable, carbon neutral, transport fuels are necessary for environmental and economic sustainability. Algae have emerged as one of the most promising sources for biodiesel production. It can be inferred that algae grown in CO 2-enriched air can be converted to oily substances. Such an approach can contribute to solve major problems of air pollution resulting from CO 2 evolution and future …
