Pre-Settlement Vegetation At Casey's Paha State Preserve, Iowa, Reid J. Leichty, Steven H. Emerman, Lyndon R. Hawkins, Michael J. Tiano Jan 2008

Pre-Settlement Vegetation At Casey's Paha State Preserve, Iowa, Reid J. Leichty, Steven H. Emerman, Lyndon R. Hawkins, Michael J. Tiano

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Paha are loess-capped ridges standing 10-30 m above the surrounding plain of the Iowan Surface. Although Iowa was almost entirely covered with prairie and wetlands just prior to Euro-American settlement, the paha are believed to have been forested based on soil types and on early vegetation maps. The objective of this study was to find evidence that paha were forested by measuring the δ13C value of humin, the fraction of soil organic matter that is insoluble in acid and base. Previous work has shown that humin retains the δ13C signature of vegetation on a 1000-year time scale, as opposed to …

Assessment Of Smallmouth Bass Populations In Iowa Interior Rivers, Andrew C. Jansen, Michael C. Quist, Jeff Kopaska Jan 2008

Assessment Of Smallmouth Bass Populations In Iowa Interior Rivers, Andrew C. Jansen, Michael C. Quist, Jeff Kopaska

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Smallmouth bass Micropterus dolomieu are a popular sport fish throughout North America and occupy an important ecological role as top predators in aquatic systems. Despite the importance of smallmouth bass, knowledge of their population structure and dynamics in Iowa interior rivers is limited. The objective of this study was to describe population dynamics (e.g., relative abundance, size and age structure, growth, mortality) of smallmouth bass in six Iowa rivers. Smallmouth bass were sampled from the Upper Iowa, Maquoketa, and Wapsipinicon rivers in northeast Iowa and the Des Moines, Iowa, and South Skunk rivers in central Iowa using electrofishing during the …

Survival, Nest Success And Productivity Of Female Common Eiders (Somateria Mollissima Dresseri) On Flag Island, Harspwell, Casco Bay, Maine, R. Bradford Allen, Daniel G. Mcauley, Anthony Tur

Publications

In 2008, we concluded the 6th and final year of what was originally designed as a 5-year study to examine survival, recruitment and recovery rates of nesting common eiders (Somateria mollissima dresseri) on Flag Island, Harpswell, Maine. The total breeding population of common eiders on Flag Island was estimated to be about 500 nesting pairs in 2008, which is at the long term estimate of approximately 500-600 nesting pairs for this island. Both the 2007 and 2008 nesting estimates were, however, a marked improvement from the 2006 estimate when only 200 hens actually nested. This low point coincided with the …

The Correlates Of Cognitive Ageing And Adoption Of Anti-Ageing Products Among Older Adults, F.S. Ong, Y.L. Yap

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Chronological age and cognitive age had a positive and significant relationship. The findings were consistent with past research suggesting that most people view themselves to be several years younger. As antecedents, biological changes and transitional life events showed a significant positive relationship with cognitive age. The relationship between cognitive and defensive ageing consumption activities was examined.

Modeling Of A Micro-Diaphragm Biosensor For Human Artery Pulse Wave Detection, K. Hasikin, F. Ibrahim, N. Soin

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The analysis of the behavior of the micro-diaphragm biosensor for human artery pulse wave detection has been presented in this paper. This includes the study of the effect of the diaphragm structural parameters on the static and dynamic performances such as sensitivity and natural frequency. It can be concluded that the modeled micro-diaphragm with a radius of 175pm and thickness of 4pm respectively has satisfied the maximum allowable deflection and operates in optimum frequency response. ©2008 IEEE.

Graphics Processor Based Implementation Of Bioinformatics Codes, Andrew Bellenir, Christian Trefftz, Greg Wolffe Jan 2008

Graphics Processor Based Implementation Of Bioinformatics Codes, Andrew Bellenir, Christian Trefftz, Greg Wolffe

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

We created a powerful computing platform based on video cards with the goal of accelerating the performance of bioinformatics codes. To satisfy the demands of the video gaming industry, modern graphics processing units (GPUs) have become very advanced computational devices, using a large set of stream processors to render multiple pixels in parallel. Recently, computer scientists have taken interest in a GPU's ability to execute a single instruction on multiple data (SIMD computation) for general applications, as opposed to graphics processing only. This is known as general purpose computation on a graphics processing unit, or GPGPU.

Our project was comprised …

Sepas, Climate Change, And Corporate Responsibility: The Contribution Of Local Government, Catherine J. Lacroix Jan 2008

Sepas, Climate Change, And Corporate Responsibility: The Contribution Of Local Government, Catherine J. Lacroix

Faculty Publications

Municipalities in the United States are increasingly active in the effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Data suggest that the physical layout of communities and the buildings they contain make significant contributions to greenhouse gas emissions and thus to climate change. One useful tool for municipalities could be the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), pioneered in the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) at the federal level and subsequently adopted as a policymaking guide in the State Environmental Policy Acts (SEPAs) of many states. A SEPA requires state governments - and, in six states, local governments as well - to consider the …

Money Or Nothing: The Adverse Environmental Consequences Of Uncompensated Law Use Controls, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2008

Money Or Nothing: The Adverse Environmental Consequences Of Uncompensated Law Use Controls, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

The conventional wisdom holds that requiring compensation for environmental land-use controls would severely limit environmental protection efforts. There are increasing reasons to question this assumption. Both economic theory and recent empirical research demonstrate that failing to compensate private landowners for the costs of environmental regulations discourages voluntary conservation efforts and can encourage the destruction of environmental resources. The lack of a compensation requirement also means that land-use regulation is underpriced as compared to other environmental protection measures for which government agencies must pay. This results in the "overconsumption" of land-use regulations relative to other environmental protection measures that could be …

Water Marketing As An Adaptive Response To The Threat Of Climate Change, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2008

Water Marketing As An Adaptive Response To The Threat Of Climate Change, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Demographic changes and existing water use patterns have placed tremendous pressures upon water supplies, particularly in the West. Global climate change will exacerbate pressures on water resources. The gradual warming of the atmosphere is certain to change the distribution and availability of water supplies, with potentially severe consequences for freshwater supplies. While climate change will have a significant impact on water resources through changes in the timing and volume of precipitation, altered evaporation rates, and the like, the precise nature, magnitude, timing, and distribution of such climate-induced changes are unknown. This uncertainty complicates the task of water managers who are …

Anti-Conservation Incentives, Jonathan H. Adler Jan 2008

Anti-Conservation Incentives, Jonathan H. Adler

Faculty Publications

Several recent empirical studies have indicated that the Endangered Specifies Act (ESA) discourages species conservation on private land. This is because the law encourages landowners to shoot, shovel and shut up before federal authorities discover the species are present or may move onto the land. Most worrisome, the studies suggest that the net effect of the ESA on private land could be negative. Habitat loss and fragmentation represent the greatest threat to endangered species because private land is indispensable to environmental conservation.

Integral Approach To Mental Suffering, Laura B. Gilot

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

Th is article further develops one section by the same name in another article published in

the International Journal of Transpersonal Studies entitled Integral Approach in Transpersonal

Psychotherapy (Boggio Gilot, 2003) by proposing a model of mental suff ering based on

uniting scientifi c psychology with meditative wisdom (e.g., derived from Yoga Vedanta). Th e

role of spiritual vision underlines a wider understanding of the origins of mental suff ering,

including damage from ontological unawareness and egoism, non-ethical factors usually

ignored in psychology. Th ese give rise to destructive poisons of the mind such as pride,

greed, fear, resentment, envy, …

Global Climate Change: Leadership In The Pacific West Region, Jonathan B. Jarvis

United States National Park Service: Publications

Twenty years ago, I became the first chief of resource management at North Cascades National Park Complex. One of the first things I did was to bring in a team of scientists who sat around with me and my staff and we talked about the future of the park. I asked each one to suggest what we should do to better understand the challenges before us. Jim Agee, then with the Cooperative Park Study Unit at the University of Washington, suggested that we deploy remote weather stations every one thousand feet from the lowest to the highest range in the …

Cost-Effective Mapping Of Invasive Plants Using Systematic Reconnaissance Flights (Srfs), Tony Pernas, Amy Ferriter Jan 2008

Cost-Effective Mapping Of Invasive Plants Using Systematic Reconnaissance Flights (Srfs), Tony Pernas, Amy Ferriter

United States National Park Service: Publications

The quarantine strategy is recognized as one of the most effective strategies for controlling invasive plant populations. The quarantine strategy as described by Woodall 1981 is where the least-infested areas (outliers) are addressed first in order to stop the progression of the existing population. Detection of individual trees and scattered small clusters is imperative for the success of the quarantine strategy.Attempts to map individual trees and small clusters of invasive plants in south Florida such as Melaleuca quinquenervia through remote sensing have not been successful. For example, in 1988 efforts to detect Melaleuca from false color infrared (1:10,000) in Everglades …

Citizen Science: A Best Practices Manual And How It Can Be Applied, Susan Sachs, Paul E. Super, Michelle Prysby

United States National Park Service: Publications

These examples are all forms of “citizen science” happening at environmental education centers, National Park research learning centers, nature centers, and other non-formal education institutions. Citizen science is a research and education tool that involves everyday people in real and meaningful forms of science, including biological inventory, long-term monitoring, and investigative research. All of these examples demonstrate ways that these institutions are using citizen science as a tool for furthering their missions of educating the public about the environment, teaching people about the process of science, and connecting people to the natural world. They also demonstrate ways that citizens are …
