Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Numerous species of mammals are susceptible to Mycobacterium bovis, the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis (TB). Several wildlife hosts have emerged as reservoirs of M. bovis infection for domestic livestock in different countries. In the present study, blood samples were collected from Eurasian badgers (n = 1532), white-tailed deer (n = 463), brushtail possums (n = 129), and wild boar (n = 177) for evaluation of antibody responses to M. bovis infection by a lateral-flow rapid test (RT) and multiantigen print immunoassay (MAPIA). Magnitude of the antibody responses and antigen recognition patterns varied among the animals as determined by …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Cobalt-Diamond-Like-Carbon (Co-Dlc) Nanocomposites, Gunjan Shebe

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

In recent years, synthesis of magnetic nanocomposites has been receiving significant attention. These nanocomposites offer opportunities to develop active nanomaterials with various applications like magnetic data storage and biomedical applications. They can be designed to provide excellent magnetic properties. However, high saturation magnetization materials, such as Co are not biocompatible. Thus, designing nanocomposites with magnetic phase embedded in biocompatible protective shells is of immense interest. In this study, Co-DLC nanocomposites were synthesized using a hybrid CVD/PVD technique and different combination of processing parameters were used to vary the concentration of Co in the nanocomposites. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy showed, that with …

Antarctic Sediment Chronology By Programmed-Temperature Pyrolysis: Methodology And Data Treatment, Brad E. Rosenheim, Mary Beth Day, Eugene Domack, Heather Schrum, Albert Benthien, John M. Hayes

Marine Science Faculty Publications

We report a detailed programmed-temperature pyrolysis/combustion methodology for radiocarbon (14C) dating of Antarctic sub-ice shelf sediments. The method targets the autochthonous organic component in sediments that contain a distribution of acid-insoluble organic components from several sources of different ages. The approach has improved sediment chronology in organic-rich sediments proximal to Antarctic ice shelves by yielding maximum age constraints significantly younger than bulk radiocarbon dates from the same sediment horizons. The method proves adequate in determining isotope ratios of the pre-aged carbon end-member; however, the isotopic compositions of the low-temperature measurements indicate that no samples completely avoided mixing with some proportion …

Conflict Resolution In The Aftermath Of The World Trade Center Attacks: A Family Mediation Program, Alan E. Gross Jan 2008

Conflict Resolution In The Aftermath Of The World Trade Center Attacks: A Family Mediation Program, Alan E. Gross

Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution

It is not unusual for a disaster or crisis to give rise to increasing tensions, interpersonal disputes and general conflict; however, even after an unexpected disaster of the magnitude of the 9/11 attacks, mobilizing conflict resolution services was not a priority for conflict professionals. In the wake of 9/11, mediators, arbitrators and other conflict resolvers were primarily concerned, like their fellow citizens, with their own safety and the safety of their families. When the fear of harm from additional attacks eventually subsided, many who had not been directly affected turned their attention to assisting those less fortunate who had lost …

Phylogenetic Analyses Of Two Mitochondrial Metabolic Genes Sampled In Parallel From Angiosperms Find Fundamental Interlocus Incongruence, Melvin R. Duvall, J.W. Robinson, J.G. Mattson, A. Moore Jan 2008

Phylogenetic Analyses Of Two Mitochondrial Metabolic Genes Sampled In Parallel From Angiosperms Find Fundamental Interlocus Incongruence, Melvin R. Duvall, J.W. Robinson, J.G. Mattson, A. Moore

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

Plant molecular phylogeneticists have supported an analytical approach of combining loci from different genomes, but the combination of mitochondrial sequences with chloroplast and nuclear sequences is potentially problematic. Low substitution rates in mitochondrial genes should decrease saturation, which is especially useful for the study of deep divergences. However, individual mitochondrial loci are insuffi ciently informative, so that combining congruent loci is necessary. For this study atp1 and cox1 were selected, which are of similar lengths, encode components of the respiratory pathway, and generally lack introns. Thus, these genes might be expected to have similar functional constraints, selection pressures, and evolutionary …

Effects Of Eutrophication On Salt Marsh Root And Rhizome Biomass Accumulation, F A. Darby, R. Eugene Turner Jan 2008

Effects Of Eutrophication On Salt Marsh Root And Rhizome Biomass Accumulation, F A. Darby, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The root:shoot ratio of grassland plants may be lower in high fertility sites than in low fertility sites as plants modify their root, rhizome and shoot morphologies (and masses) to suit prevailing nutrient availability. We conducted geographically diverse and regionally specific field sampling and measured above- and belowground plant biomasses in western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico salt marshes to determine whether there is a similar morphological response in Spartina alterniflora, the dominant salt marsh plant. Coastal nutrient addition/enrichment, which is widespread and ongoing, may lower root and rhizome biomass, belowground production and organic accumulation in this species. Higher soil …

Combating Amphibian Population Declines: An Investigation Of The Pathophysiology And Possible Treatments Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis, Christopher A. Gaulke Jan 2008

Combating Amphibian Population Declines: An Investigation Of The Pathophysiology And Possible Treatments Of Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis, Christopher A. Gaulke

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis has been linked to the decline of amphibians worldwide. Research has been devoted to examining the range of B. dendrobatidis and various physiological aspects of the fungus; however, little is known about how it causes mortality in individuals. Subsequently, we investigated the potential mechanisms of mortality by examining the pathogen's effect on metabolic rate and osmotic balance. In addition, we attempted to develop a field treatment for the pathogen using Itraconazol. Metabolic rates, mass, pathogen symptoms and osmotic concentrations were measured in Rana pipiens and Hyla rigilla. Results suggest symptoms are variable and individuals survive for …

Synthesis Towards Novel 1,3-Azaborine Heterocycles As Potential Dual-Mode Hiv-1 Protease Inhibitors, Amanda Blackmore Jan 2008

Synthesis Towards Novel 1,3-Azaborine Heterocycles As Potential Dual-Mode Hiv-1 Protease Inhibitors, Amanda Blackmore

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Drug discovery has resulted in many life-saving therapies, making a great impact on modem medicine and the human condition. Even though new therapies are available many drugs are highly susceptible to resistance development, have poor bioavailability, and some of them are toxic. HIV-I protease inhibitors presently on the market show high specificity but have low bioavailability and high toxicity. Furthermore, the available drugs have a very low affinity for mutant forms of HIV -1 protease. Recent studies have shown that boronated HIV-I protease inhibitors, which demonstrate both competitive and associative inhibition, have a higher affinity for HIV-I protease at lower …

More Evidence That Mutation Rate In The Chloroplast Genome Depends On Copy Number, Ashley Dutton Jan 2008

More Evidence That Mutation Rate In The Chloroplast Genome Depends On Copy Number, Ashley Dutton

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The conservative nature of the copy variable region (CVR) of the chloroplast genome, also known as the inverted repeat (IR) region, is well established; however the basis for the lower mutation rate has been debated. Two ideas have been proposed to explain the reduced rate: 1) genes in the region are inherently slow to evolve; or 2) the presence of two copies reduces the rate via copy correction. Comparisons of eighty-three genes and twenty introns were made estimating mutation rates, from both the CVR region and single copy (SC) regions in legumes and gymnosperms. In gene and intron comparisons, CVR …

Validation Of A Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Equation Predicting Body Composition Using Conductor Length Instead Of Height, Jessica Dawn Nye Jan 2008

Validation Of A Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Equation Predicting Body Composition Using Conductor Length Instead Of Height, Jessica Dawn Nye

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is widely used in predicting body composition. Impedance of an electrical current that passes through the body is related to the composition of the body and the length of the conductor, conventionally estimated using height. The purpose of this study was to compare a BIA equation prediction fat-free mass (FFM) that utilized actual conductor length (Parsons) with a conventional BIA equation (NHANES), using hydrodensitometry as the reference method. Thirty-nine male and 53 female subjects were studied. For both sexes, FFM predicted by both Parsons and NHANES equations were equally and highly correlated with FFM measured using …

Ontogenetic Changes In Feeding Morphology And Diet In The Chiselmouth Minnow, Acrocheilus Alutaceus, Corrie Murray Jan 2008

Ontogenetic Changes In Feeding Morphology And Diet In The Chiselmouth Minnow, Acrocheilus Alutaceus, Corrie Murray

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The chiselmouth minnow (Acrocheilus alutaceus) is an herbivorous fish endemic to freshwater systems of the Pacific Northwest and abundant in mid-reaches of the Yakima River, WA. Uncommon in temperate streams, herbivorous fish are ecologically important because they provide a direct link between primary production and fish biomass. Chiselmouth minnows undergo ontogenetic morphological changes as they transform from insectivore to herbivore, the lower jaw becomes flattened, calcified and hardened for scraping algae and the intestine grows long for digestion. The timing of these changes in relation to diet and ecological status are poorly understood. By quantifying changes in jaw …

Synthesis Of 5,6 Dihydropyran-2-Ones As Potential Inhibitors Of Hiv-1 Protease, Jesse Lee Nye Jan 2008

Synthesis Of 5,6 Dihydropyran-2-Ones As Potential Inhibitors Of Hiv-1 Protease, Jesse Lee Nye

Undergraduate Honors Theses

HIV/ AIDS has affected about 40 million people. One type of drug that is used to treat HIV/AIDS is a protease inhibitor. HIV-I protease is an enzyme responsible for the release of mature HIV viral particles in the body. HIV-I protease eventually becomes resistant to the inhibitors that are used as drugs and new inhibitors are needed. This research builds on a previous research effort, in which structures for HIV -1 protease inhibitors were designed using molecular modeling methods, including neural networks. These inhibitors were designed to possess better inhibitory properties, and possibly have increased bioavailability and less toxicity than …

The Metabolic Effects Of Epigallo Catechin Gallate On Females At Rest And Low Exertion, Bret Mcconaughy Rust Jan 2008

The Metabolic Effects Of Epigallo Catechin Gallate On Females At Rest And Low Exertion, Bret Mcconaughy Rust

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Green tea extract (GTE) containing catechin polyphenols is marketed widely as a dietary supplement intended to enhance weight loss. Epigallo Catechin Gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenol found in green tea that some studies have found to increase Energy Expenditure (EE) and to decrease Respiratory Quotient (RQ) in human subjects. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two weeks of chronic supplementation of 540 mg of EGCG on anthropometric measurements, body composition, blood pressure, EE and RQ in adult women at rest and at low levels of exertion. Results trended toward reducing resting RQ (p=.098) but showed …

Self-Directed Behaviors In Tibetan Macaques (Maca Thibetana) As A Function Of Tourist Density And Proximity At The Valley Of The Wild Monkeys, Terrence A. Yenter Jan 2008

Self-Directed Behaviors In Tibetan Macaques (Maca Thibetana) As A Function Of Tourist Density And Proximity At The Valley Of The Wild Monkeys, Terrence A. Yenter

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Prior work has shown a relationship between tourist density and self-directed behaviors (SDBs) in Tibetan macaques (Macaca thibetana) at the Valley of the Wild Monkeys. In this study, focal animal sampling was used to collect data on two groups, one with eight adults and the other with 20, during August 2007. Consistent with past research, we found that the quadrat of the study site where monkeys are at eye-level with humans was both least visited by the monkeys and had the highest SDB rates. Of the remaining tourist adjacent quadrats, monkeys spent significantly less time in these areas, …

Assessing The Market For Human Reproductive Tissue Alienability: Why Can We Sell Our Eggs But Not Our Livers?, Brenda Reddix-Smalls

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Currently, an unregulated marketplace for assisted reproductive technology exists in the United States. For some people suffering from infertility, the ability to purchase human reproductive tissue, eggs, and sperm yields a maximum benefit when examined in a market context. Buyers, sellers, supply and demand, and technological advances all operate in a robust marketplace to provide the infertile with a supply of human eggs for reproduction with minimum state and federal regulatory control. Conversely, the buying and selling of all other human organs and tissues is prohibited in the United States by several federal statutes. The National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) …
