In recent years, Fall Armyworm (FAW) reports have steadily increased in warmer regions of various continents, causing significant losses in the agricultural sector, especially in staple crops such as rice, corn, and sorghum. The pest species travels across warmer areas by riding wind currents and targeting crops. To combat FAW, farmers have developed and improved pesticide formulas and other control strategies, as the pest has shown resistance to many commercial pesticides used. However, FAW monitoring remains a challenge for the agricultural sector. With the agricultural nature of the Philippines, it is crucial to monitor the pest's spread behavior in order …

Foodborne illnesses cause millions of deaths annually, posing a significant public health concern, particularly in regions with thriving street food cultures like the Philippines. This study investigated how sugar content and pH levels in street food dipping sauces affect microbial growth. Six sauce samples were prepared with varying sugar (25g, 50g, 75g) and pH levels (4.0, 3.6, 3.1). Microbial load was measured using the Standard Plate Count (SPC) method. While a moderate sugar concentration (50g) showed the lowest microbial load, this difference was not statistically significant (p=0.77). However, pH significantly impacted microbial growth (p=0.0034), with pH 3.6 showing the lowest …

The Philippines boasts a rich plant biodiversity as it is located in the tropical region of the Earth. This opens up many opportunities for ethnobotanical research, which studies the many practical and cultural aspects of the plants present within a region. Native fruits are fruits grown in a specific region that have been neglected by the country’s market, as it prioritizes industrialization over cultural and native traditions and practices. As a result, research on native fruits is becoming few and far between. The researchers see this as a missed opportunity to widen and enrich both the country’s biodiversity and culture. …

The broadly conserved ParB protein performs crucial functions in bacterial chromosome segregation and replication regulation. The cellular function of ParB requires it to dimerize, recognize parS DNA sequences, clamp on DNA, then slide to adjacent sequences through nonspecific DNA binding. How ParB coordinates nonspecific DNA binding and sliding remains elusive. Here, we combine multiple in vitro biophysical and computational tools and in vivo approaches to address this question. We found that five conserved lysine residues in the C-terminal domain (CTD) of ParB play distinct roles. While the two central rigid lysine residues provide the structural platform for the CTD, the …

Background
Humanized APOE targeted-replacement (TR) mice are essential tools for studying apoE isoform effects in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and other apoE-related disorders. Despite their widespread use, existing APOE mouse models, generated with different gene targeting strategies, have not been directly compared in terms of apoE isoform expression, lipid profiles, and transcriptomic signatures. Such differences could impact how we interpret APOE genotype-related outcomes, as well as related underlying molecular mechanisms.
Methods
We conducted a comprehensive molecular comparison of humanized APOE mouse models from three sources: Taconic Biosciences (TAC), the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (CAF), and The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). We assessed apoE …

Ethnobotanical Study Of Medicinal Plants Used By The Local Population In And Around Kozak Plateau (Bergama, İzmir, Türkiye), Şükrü Arasan, Hasan Yildirim
Turkish Journal of Botany
This research was conducted between 2020 and 2022 in 21 villages located on the Kozak Plateau and its surroundings, in the Bergama district of İzmir province, Türkiye. The main aim of the study is to document the medicinal uses of plants by the local population and to contribute to the preservation and transmission of ethnobotanical knowledge—passed down through generations— to future generations before it disappears. Interviews were conducted with 159 informants, and the traditional medicinal uses of 126 plant taxa belonging to 54 families were identified. Among these, the therapeutic uses of 37 taxa were recorded for the first time. …

In this non-primary residence holdover proceeding, the landlord sought possession against the tenant of record, Michael Williams, who had permanently vacated to a nursing home, and undertenant Kimberly Bivens. Bivens asserted succession rights as a non-traditional family member. The court found that Bivens credibly established both an emotional and financial commitment with the former tenant for over 14 years and co-residency for the statutory period. Her documentary and testimonial evidence, including a shared bank account and healthcare proxy, were unrebutted. Consequently, the court granted Bivens succession rights, dismissed the petition against her, and ordered the landlord to issue her a …

Environmental Inequities In Conservation Policies And Practices: A Brief Overview, Monyai Chavers

Conservation science and practice mirror racist notions of colonialism, prolonging a cycle in which policies and programs disregard land access. Many conservation leaders operate from a culture of land exclusion, focusing on nature to generate wealth, deeming the number of individuals removed from the commons as progress. By the turn of the 21st Century, government conservation policies compensated private actors and groups for voluntarily adopting market-based mechanisms aimed at land conservation. Despite the emergence of various conservation programs, the data show that White Americans primarily benefit from federal conservation payments. However, the fragmentation of Black land ownership allows the …

Heavy metals are natural components of the environment and can be relatively non-impactful in low concentrations. However, high concentrations of heavy metal toxicity can result in air, water, and soil contamination that adversely impacts environmental, human, and wildlife health. This study focuses on detecting the presence of heavy metals in soil, Loblolly Pine tree bark, and wood core samples from sites near a landfill in the Tallassee, Alabama, community and a post-agricultural site in Tuskegee, Alabama. It has been hypothesized that heavy metals are present in soil, tree bark, and the tree’s wood core from sampling sites. Samples were taken …

Impact Of In-Depth Adoption Of System Of Rice Intensification On Food Security Of Smallholder Farm Households In Mali, Moussa Macalou, John Baptist D. Jatoe
Professional Agricultural Workers Journal
The system of rice intensification (SRI) was implemented in Mali to boost rice productivity. The objectives of this paper are to identify the constraints faced by SRI adopters, estimate the food security index, and assess the impact of in-depth adoption of SRI on smallholder farm households’ food security. The study uses Kendall’s ranking to rank the six main constraints identified from the literature. The study uses the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale to estimate households’ food security index. Using primary data collected on rice farm households, the study combines the multivalued treatment effect inverse probability weighted regression adjustment and the …

“Clemson Spineless” and “Jambalaya” okra were grown in a Tunnel House and field to compare yield and other growth parameters. A split-plot design with three replications/treatment was used; the Tunnel House and field were main plots, and varieties split plot. Plant height was significantly taller, and pod harvesting began two weeks earlier in the Tunnel House. Yield showed no significant differences between varieties, and Tunnel House vs. field-produced okra. However, “Clemson Spineless” produced 9% higher pod yield in the Tunnel House than “Jambalaya,” which had 23% higher field yield than “Clemson Spineless.” An enterprise budget analysis showed that Tunnel House …

Turkish Journal of Botany
The genus Aethionema in Türkiye was investigated through a comprehensive taxonomic study including morphological, seed micromorphological, and molecular methods. This study led to the synonymization of 11 taxa: A. annuum, A. dincii subsp. baytopiae, A. alidaghenicum, A. bingoelicum, A. dumelicum, A. ertughrulii, A. fruticulosum, A. gypsicola, A. huber-morathii, A. maraschicum, and A. turanicum. Conversely, seven species were resurrected: A. levandowskyi, A. sintenisii, A. acarii, A. pallidiflorum, A. pseudoarmenum, A. pulchellum, and A. recurvum. Four new combinations and status changes (comb. et stat. nov.) were proposed. Reevaluation of synonymous species resulted in the reclassification of A. cardiophyllum and A. lacerum as …
