Seed Predation By Acanthoscelides Submuticus And A. Pallidipennis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) In False Indigo In The Northern Great Plains, Arvid Boe, Paul J. Johnson Jan 2008

Seed Predation By Acanthoscelides Submuticus And A. Pallidipennis (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) In False Indigo In The Northern Great Plains, Arvid Boe, Paul J. Johnson

Native Plant Focused Publications

False indigo (Amorpha fruticosa L.) is a native North American leguminous shrub frequently found on shores of lakes and banks of rivers and streams in eastern and central United States and is present in 46 of the 48 contiguous states. It is planted for wildlife habitat, streambank erosion control, and ornamental purposes. Over several years, 16 collections of mature pods of false indigo were obtained from shorelines of four lakes and one cultivated planting in the northern Great Plains to determine frequency of pod predation by bruchid beetles. Frequency of pod predation by Acanthoscelides submuticus (Sharp) varied significantly among locations, …

Capitalizing On Affect: Viagra (In)Action, Kristin A. Swenson Jan 2008

Capitalizing On Affect: Viagra (In)Action, Kristin A. Swenson

Scholarship and Professional Work - Communication

Recent cultural criticisms of Viagra’s advertisements and promotional materials have argued that rhetorical constructions of Viagra users reestablish a hegemonic masculinity premised on heterosexual standards of traditional gender norms (Baglia, 2005; Bordo, 2000; Loe, 2004). Cultural critics have also noted that Viagra’s promotional materials allow “for alternative readings by potential users who do not fall into the category of the ‘traditional/ideal’ Viagra user” including women and homosexual men (Mamo & Fishman, 2001, p. 14). What most criticisms fail to take into account is that Viagra, like other lifestyle drugs, does not only reestablish cultural constructs of the contemporary gendered body …

Inferences, Arguments, And Second Generation Forensic Evidence, Erin Murphy Jan 2008

Inferences, Arguments, And Second Generation Forensic Evidence, Erin Murphy

UC Law Journal

Advances in scientific and technological evidence have resulted in a new, "second generation" of forensic proof characterized by its high degree of probativeness and mechanical sophistication. Methods such as DNA typing are already in widespread use in the criminal justice system, and law enforcement may soon have available other biometric techniques, global locators, or even reliable lie detection systems.

The promise and allure of such forms of forensic evidence lie in its high degree of accuracy. But the perception that such evidence is infallible has resulted in an increasing number of instances in which the government has sought to bolster …

Conceptual Hurdles To The Application Of Atkins V. Virgina, Lois A. Weithorn Jan 2008

Conceptual Hurdles To The Application Of Atkins V. Virgina, Lois A. Weithorn

UC Law Journal

In its 2002 decision in Atkins v. Virginia, the United States Supreme Court held that the Eighth Amendment's prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment precludes the execution of "mentally retarded offender[s]." Despite the apparent "brightline" clarity of an absolute ban on the execution of mentally retarded offenders, the determination of which offenders fall within the protected group is deceivingly complex. The meanings of the concepts of "mental retardation," "intelligence," and "adaptive behavior" are-like the standards of decency guiding the Court-continually evolving, and are subjects of ongoing reevaluation and debate. Given what is at stake in Atkins assessments, lawmakers, jurists, practitioners, …

The Matter Of Fit: The Law Of Discrimination And The Science Of Implicit Bias, David L. Faigman, Nilanjana Dasgupta, Cecilia L. Ridgeway Jan 2008

The Matter Of Fit: The Law Of Discrimination And The Science Of Implicit Bias, David L. Faigman, Nilanjana Dasgupta, Cecilia L. Ridgeway

UC Law Journal

This Article examines the "fit" between the law of discrimination and the science of implicit bias, including consideration of the legal standards that apply and a broad overview of the sociological and psychological literatures that are relevant to those standards. The Authors first set forth the legal framework within which the psychological and sociological research literatures must be considered. Although the legal standard is not entirely unambiguous, scientific research on implicit bias appears relevant to the basic empirical issues put in issue by the law. The Authors then review the general research literature on the phenomenon of "implicit biases" in …

Insult To Injury: A Disability-Sensitive Response To Smolensky's Call For Parental Tort Liability For Preimplantation Genetic Interventions, Alicia R. Ouellette Jan 2008

Insult To Injury: A Disability-Sensitive Response To Smolensky's Call For Parental Tort Liability For Preimplantation Genetic Interventions, Alicia R. Ouellette

UC Law Journal

In her article, Creating Children with Disabilities: Parental Tort Liability for Preimplantation Genetic Interventions, Professor Kirsten Rabe Smolensky argues that children who were subject to preimplantation genetic manipulation should have the ability to sue their parents for damages when the parents "directly intervene in the child's DNA and consequently cause that child to suffer a disability which limits the child's right to an open future." This Essay addresses the implications for people with disabilities of that argument. Specifically, it argues that limiting damages to cases in which a child is born with a disability unnecessarily and inaccurately devalues life with …

Crystal Structure Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Methanococcus Jannaschii Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Jacqueline Vitali, Michael Colaneri Colaneri, Evan Kantrowitz Jan 2008

Crystal Structure Of The Catalytic Trimer Of Methanococcus Jannaschii Aspartate Transcarbamoylase, Jacqueline Vitali, Michael Colaneri Colaneri, Evan Kantrowitz

Physics Faculty Publications

The catalytic trimer of Methanococcus jannaschii aspartate transcarbamoylase is extremely heat stable, maintaining 75% of its activity after heat treatment for 60 min at 75 degrees C. We undertook its structural analysis in order to understand the molecular basis of its thermostability and gain insight on how its catalytic function adapts to high temperature. Several structural elements potentially contributing to thermostability were identified. These include: (i) changes in the amino acid composition such as a decrease in the thermolabile residues Gln and Asn, an increase in the charged residues Lys and Glu, an increase in Tyr and a decrease in …

A Streamlined Molecular Biology Module For Undergraduate Biochemistry Labs, Gregory W. Muth, Joseph W. Chihade Jan 2008

A Streamlined Molecular Biology Module For Undergraduate Biochemistry Labs, Gregory W. Muth, Joseph W. Chihade

Chemistry Faculty Work

Site-directed mutagenesis and other molecular biology techniques, including plasmid manipulation and restriction analysis, are commonly used tools in the biochemistry research laboratory. In redesigning our biochemistry lab curricula, we sought to integrate these techniques into a term-long, project-based course. In the module presented here, students use structural data to design a site-directed mutant and make the mutation using the Ku¨ nkel method. A second, silent mutant, that creates or removes a restriction site, is simultaneously introduced. Restriction digestion and agarose gel electrophoresis are used to assess the success of mutagenesis. Placing these procedures in the context of continuous, studentdriven project …
