Exploring Effective Methods To Build Literacy, Critical Thinking Skills, And Confidence In Middle School Science Classrooms, Jennifer W. Butler Jan 2008

Exploring Effective Methods To Build Literacy, Critical Thinking Skills, And Confidence In Middle School Science Classrooms, Jennifer W. Butler

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

In most science classrooms, one of the most challenging aspects of teaching science is getting students to understand and apply scientific concepts. Most students have simple, generalized knowledge of the concepts, but they lack in the ability to articulate their knowledge and to comprehend questions that use scientific terminology. As a result, many of these students do poorly on standardized tests. The objective of this study was to increase middle school students' skills in reading, comprehension, and oratory articulation in science by implementing the following literacy strategies: Read-Alouds, graphic organizers, K-W-L (Know, Want to know, and Learned)charts, and writing to …

The Relationship Between Reading Comprehension Skills And Self-Concept During Preadolescence, Linda Hathaway Jan 2008

The Relationship Between Reading Comprehension Skills And Self-Concept During Preadolescence, Linda Hathaway

Honors Capstones

This paper is about the relationship between reading comprehension skills and levels of self concept during preadolescence. I refer to Vgotsky's sociocultural theory to establish a preliminary connection and delve further into defining the differences between self-concept, self esteem and self-efficacy. I talk about students' views of their own cognitive abilities, contributing factors to positive self-concept and how some struggling students cope in the classroom. Next is provided a short descriptive list of skills all students should utilize in their academic learning. Finally, I add suggested ideas from author Cris Tovani to provide students with the necessary skills needed for …

Modeling Algae Self-Replenishment, V. S. Manoranjan, Miguel A. Olmos Gomez, R. Corban Harwood

Faculty Publications - Department of Mathematics

This paper presents a sunlight-dependent algae growth model. Driven by the circumstances surrounding Lake Chapala, Mexico, this theoretical model is an endeavor to understand the resilient sustainability of algae that threatens the area’s ecosystem. In this paper, free-floating algae (phytoplankton) are treated as two distinct populations according to their location in the body of water: the vibrant sunlit upper region and the stagnate lower region where photosynthesis is not possible. The numerical solution for the model is analyzed and results are discussed in light of previous studies and the state of Lake Chapala.

Runoff Using A Combined Geographic Information System And Curve Number Approach, Keshia M. Koehn Jan 2008

Runoff Using A Combined Geographic Information System And Curve Number Approach, Keshia M. Koehn

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Stormwater runoff can transport nutrients, sediments, chemicals, and pathogens to surface water bodies. Managing runoff is crucial to preserving water quality in rapidly developing urban watersheds like Northwest Arkansas. A watershed containing much of the University of Arkansas campus was identified as the target area for this study because stormwater from this location drains into the West Fork of the White River, designated as an impaired water body due to siltation. The project objective was to develop a methodology to test existing stormwater drainage infrastructure, identify potential areas of improvement, and estimate potentially contaminated runoff by combining two widely used …

Interactions Of Cis-Bis Ruthenium Complexes With Monosaccharides, Lindsay Mcdonald Jan 2008

Interactions Of Cis-Bis Ruthenium Complexes With Monosaccharides, Lindsay Mcdonald

Undergraduate Review

Molecular recognition and binding of oligosaccharides play an essential role in many biological processes including cell-cell recognition, signaling and adhesion. Our group is currently involved in the development of metal based receptors that can effectively bind specific glycoconjugates. Species that can selectively bind and chemically alter membrane glycoconjugates have the potential to inhibit tumor cell metastasis, inflammation and fibrosis. As an initial step towards our goal the interactions of cis-Ru(bpy)2(DMF)22+ (bpy = bipyridine, DMF = dimethylformamide) and cis-Ru(acac)2(CH3CN)2+ (acac = acetylacetonate) with the monosaccharides glucose and mannose have been examined …

In Vivo Strains In The Femur Of River Cooter Turtles (Pseudemys Concinna) During Terrestrial Locomotion: Tests Of Force-Platform Models Of Loading Mechanics, Michael T. Butcher, Nora R. Espinoza, Stephanie R. Cirilo, Richard W. Blob Jan 2008

In Vivo Strains In The Femur Of River Cooter Turtles (Pseudemys Concinna) During Terrestrial Locomotion: Tests Of Force-Platform Models Of Loading Mechanics, Michael T. Butcher, Nora R. Espinoza, Stephanie R. Cirilo, Richard W. Blob

Publications

Previous analyses of ground reaction force (GRF) and kinematic data from river cooter turtles (Pseudemys concinna) during terrestrial walking led to three primary conclusions about the mechanics of limb bone loading in this lineage: (1) the femur was loaded in a combination of axial compression, bending and torsion, similar to previously studied non-avian reptiles, (2) femoral shear stresses were high despite the possession of a reduced tail in turtles that does not drag on the ground and (3) stress-based calculations of femoral safety factors indicated high values in bending and torsion, similar to other reptiles and suggesting that substantial `overbuilding' …

Critical to the proper maintenance of blood-brainbarrier (BBB) integrity are the endothelial tight junctions (TJs). Posttranslational modifications of essential endothelial TJ proteins, occludin and claudin-5, contribute and possibly disrupt BBB integrity. Our previous work has shown that Rho kinase (RhoK) activation mediates occludin and claudin-5 phosphorylation resulting in diminished barrier tightness and enhanced monocyte migration across BBB in the setting of human immunodeficiency virus-1 encephalitis (HIVE). To determine whether RhoK can directly phosphorylate TJ proteins, we examined phosphorylation of cytoplasmic domains of recombinant claudin- 5 and occludin by RhoK. We found that RhoK predominately phosphorylated two sites on occludin (T382 …

Probing The Novelties Of Alkalilimnicola Ehrlichii Strain Mlhe-1 With Genomic And Proteomic Approaches, Christine Richey

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Alkalilimnicola ehrlichii strain MLHE -1T is a gram negative haloalkaliphilic gammaproteobacterium isolated from Mono Lake, CA. It has the unique ability to grow both aerobically as a heterotroph (with oxygen and acetate) and anaerobically as a chemolithoautotroph by coupling arsenite oxidation to nitrate reduction. Its genome (3.276 MB, 67.53% mole GC) has been sequenced to closure and annotated (2883 putative ORFs). The pathways involved in nitrogen (e.g., denitrification, assimilation), sulfur, and carbon metabolism (glycolysis, gluconeogenesis), carbon fixation, tricarboxylic acid cycle, and motility (flagella, pili) are described herein. Though no homolog for arsenite oxidase was found, two putative arsenate reductases (arr) …

Recent ice core measurements show lead concentrations increasing since 1970, suggesting new non automobile-related sources of Pb are becoming important worldwide (1). Developing a full understanding of the major sources of Pb and other metals is critical to controlling these emissions. During the March, 2006 MILAGRO campaign, single particle measurements in Mexico City revealed the frequent appearance of particles internally mixed with Zn, Pb, Cl, and P. Pb concentrations were as high as 1.14 μg/m3 in PM10 and 0.76 μg/m3 in PM2.5. Real time measurements were used to select time periods of interest …

Many biominerals, including mollusk and echinoderm shells, avian eggshells, modern and fossil bacterial sediments, planktonic coccolithophores, and foraminifera, contain carbonates in the form of biogenic aragonite or calcite. Here we analyze biogenic and geologic aragonite using different kinds of surface- and bulksensitive X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) spectroscopy at the carbon K-edge, as well as highresolution scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM). Besides the well-known main π* and σ* carbonate peaks, we observed and fully characterized four minor peaks, at energies between the main π* and σ* peaks. As expected, the main peaks are similar in geologic …

Challenges In Earth System Modelling: Approaches And Applications, D.J. Erickson Ill, Robert J. Oglesby, S. Elliott, W. Steffen, G. Brasseur

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Earth system modelling has taken on increasing importance over the past several years. These models are being used to address an increasing number of environmental and global change problems of societal concern (e.g. Adams et al., 1998; Easterling et al., 2000; Foley et al., 2003). Perhaps most commonly known is the application to possible greenhouse-gas induced warming (Hoffman et al., 2005). Other compelling problems include the climatic effects of land use changes, aerosols (including sulphate emissions, and smoke from biomass burning; Erickson et al., 1995; Oglesby et al., 1999), changing trace gas fluxes, interactions and feedbacks with the global carbon …

Biogeochemical Processes In Ethanol Stimulated Uranium-Contaminated Subsurface Sediments, Santosh R. Mohanty, Bharati Kollah, David B. Hedrick, Aaron D. Peacock, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, E. E. Roden

United States Department of Energy: Publications

A laboratory incubation experiment was conducted with uranium contaminated subsurface sediment to assess the geochemical and microbial community response to ethanol amendment. A classical sequence of terminal electron-accepting processes (TEAPs) was observed in ethanol-amended slurries, with NO3- reduction, Fe(III) reduction, SO42- reduction, and CH4 production proceeding in sequence until all of the added 13Cethanol (9 mM) was consumed. Approximately 60% of the U(VI) content of the sediment was reduced during the period of Fe(III) reduction. No additional U(VI) reduction took place during the sulfate-reducing and methanogenic phases of the experiment. Only gradual reduction of NO …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Under oxic conditions, Tc exists as the soluble, weakly sorbing pertechnetate [TcO4-] anion. The reduced form of technetium, Tc(IV), is stable in anoxic environments and is sparingly soluble as TcO2 ·nH2O(s). Here we investigate the heterogeneous reduction of Tc(VII) by Fe(II) adsorbed on Al (hydr)oxides [diaspore (α-AlOOH) and corundum (α-Al2O3)]. Experiments were performed to study the kinetics of Tc(VII) reduction, examine changes in Fe surface speciation during Tc(VII) reduction (Mössbauer spectroscopy), and identify the nature of Tc(IV)-containing reaction products (X-ray absorption spectroscopy). We found that Tc(VII) was completely …

Long-Term Dynamics Of Uranium Reduction/Reoxidation Under Low Sulfate Conditions, John Komlos, Aaron Peacock, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Peter R. Jaffe Jan 2008

Long-Term Dynamics Of Uranium Reduction/Reoxidation Under Low Sulfate Conditions, John Komlos, Aaron Peacock, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, Peter R. Jaffe

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The biological reduction and precipitation of uranium in groundwater has the potential to prevent uranium migration from contaminated sites. Although previous research has shown that uranium bioremediation is maximized during iron reduction, little is known on how long-term iron/uranium reducing conditions can be maintained. Questions also remain about the stability of uranium and other reduced species after a long-term biostimulation scheme is discontinued and oxidants (i.e., oxygen) re-enter the bioreduced zone. To gain further insights into these processes, four columns, packed with sediment containing iron as Fe-oxides (mainly Al-goethite) and silicate Fe (Fe-containing clays), were operated in the laboratory under …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Because of their cell surface locations, the outer membrane c-type cytochromes MtrC and OmcA of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 have been suggested to be the terminal reductases for a range of redox-reactive metals that form poorly soluble solids or that do not readily cross the outer membrane. In this work, we determined the kinetics of reduction of a series of Fe(III) complexes with citrate, nitrilotriacetic acid (NTA), and EDTA by MtrC and OmcA using a stopped-flow technique in combination with theoretical computation methods. Stopped-flow kinetic data showed that the reaction proceeded in two stages, a fast stage that was completed …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Pertechnetate, 99Tc(VII)O4–, is a highly mobile radionuclide contaminant at US Department of Energy sites that can be enzymatically reduced by a range of anaerobic and facultatively anaerobic microorganisms, including Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, to poorly soluble Tc(IV)O2(s). In other microorganisms, Tc(VII)O4– reduction is generally considered to be catalysed by hydrogenase. Here, we provide evidence that although the NiFe hydrogenase of MR-1 was involved in the H2-driven reduction of Tc(VII)O4– [presumably through a direct coupling of H2 oxidation and Tc(VII) reduction], the deletion of both hydrogenase genes did not completely eliminate …

Electron Transfer At The Microbe–Mineral Interface: A Grand Challenge In Biogeochemistry, James K. Fredrickson, John M. Zachara

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The interplay between microorganisms and minerals is a complex and dynamic process that has sculpted the geosphere for nearly the entire history of the Earth. The work of Dr. Terry Beveridge and colleagues provided some of the first insights into metal–microbe and mineral–microbe interactions and established a foundation for subsequent detailed investigations of interactions between microorganisms and minerals. Beveridge also envisioned that interdisciplinary approaches and teams would be required to explain how individual microbial cells interact with their immediate environment at nano- or microscopic scales and that through such approaches and using emerging technologies that the details of such interactions …

With the quantity of genomic data increasing at an exponential rate, it is imperative that these data be captured electronically, in a standard format. Standardization activities must proceed within the auspices of open-access and international working bodies. To tackle the issues surrounding the development of better descriptions of genomic investigations, we have formed the Genomic Standards Consortium (GSC). Here, we introduce the minimum information about a genome sequence (MIGS) specification with the intent of promoting participation in its development and discussing the resources that will be required to develop improved mechanisms of metadata capture and exchange. As part of its …

The Yangtze finless porpoise (Neophocaena phocaenoides asiaeorientalis) is endemic to the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China. It is the only freshwater population of porpoises in the world and is currently listed as Endangered by IUCN. In November and December 2006 we used two boats and line transect methods to survey the entire current range of the population, except for two lakes (Poyang and Dongting). Sighting results were similar for both boats, so we pooled all data and analyzed them using two line transect models and a strip transect model. All models produced similar estimates …

Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms: Chapter 31: Ecosystem Effects Workgroup Report, John Fournie, Elizabeth Hilborn, Geoffrey Codd, Michael Coveney, Juli Dyble, Karl Havens, Bas Ibelings, Jan Landsberg, Wayne Litaker

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Harmful cyanobacterial blooms represent one of the most serious ecological stressors in lakes, rivers, estuaries and marine environments. When there are persistent or frequent blooms with high biomass of cyanobacterial cells, colonies or filaments in the water, a wide range of impacts on the ecosystem may occur. These are well established in the scientific literature and are summarized in Paerl et al. (2001). Blooms may shade the water and thereby inhibit growth of other primary producers including phytoplankton, benthic algae and vascular plants and may elevate pH, particularly in poorly buffered waters. High population densities of large cyanobacteria interfere with …
