Driving While Black: Stories Through The Driver's Car Window—A Communicative Analysis, Tracie Lynn Keesee Jan 2008

Driving While Black: Stories Through The Driver's Car Window—A Communicative Analysis, Tracie Lynn Keesee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the communicative dynamic that occurs between Denver police officers, and citizens of the African-American community, during traffic stops characterized as "Driving While Black." Thirty four interviews were conducted regarding this study. Derived from the interviews were transcribed narratives, which were examined through the use of narrative analysis and various theoretical frameworks. The narrative analysis and theoretical frameworks provided a new lens for exploring the police/citizen communicative dynamic, and a foundation for additional communication research between police officers and the African-American community.

Sex Offender Registration And Community Notification Policy: Past, Present, And Future, Wayne A. Logan Jan 2008

Sex Offender Registration And Community Notification Policy: Past, Present, And Future, Wayne A. Logan

Scholarly Publications

It’s a great honor to be with you here today and to provide the keynote address in this wonderful symposium examining issues relating to probation and parole. The panels have been remarkably rich and informative. That they should occur here in Massachusetts, where probation in particular originated in 1841, makes the proceedings today especially fitting.

Probation and parole, of course, are the epitome of state-indeed, community-based criminal justice. As recognized since the founding era, and repeatedly acknowledged by the U.S. Supreme Court, criminal justice in our federal union is mainly an undertaking of state and local governments, which process the …

The Denial Of Emergency Protection: Factors Associated With Court Decision Making, Carol E. Jordan, Adam J. Pritchard, Pamela Wilcox, Danielle Duckett-Pritchard

Office for Policy Studies on Violence Against Women Publications

Despite the importance of civil orders of protection as a legal resource for victims of intimate partner violence, research is limited in this area, and most studies focus on the process following a court’s initial issuance of an emergency order. The purpose of this study is to address a major gap in the literature by examining cases where victims of intimate partner violence are denied access to temporary orders of protection. The study sample included a review of 2,205 petitions that had been denied by a Kentucky court during the 2003 fiscal year. The study offers important insights into the …

Is There Such A Thing As “Defended Community Homicide”?: The Necessity Of Methods Triangulation, Elizabeth Griffiths, Robert D. Baller, Ryan E. Spohn, Rosemary Gartner

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Data on homicides in Buffalo, New York, are analyzed to demonstrate the importance of “methods triangulation” for assessing the validity of quantitative measures. Defended community homicides are quantitatively operationalized as acts that occur in the offender’s community against a nonlocal victim. Poisson models provide strong support for the existence of defended community homicide, which is significantly more common in residentially stable and racially homogenous neighborhoods. However, subsequent qualitative analyses of the victim and offender characteristics and motives of these homicides undermine the “defended community” concept. Qualitative analyses are necessary to assess the validity of quantitative measures in criminological research.

The Michigan Prisoner Reentry Initiative: An Examination Of A Statewide Reentry Program, Michelle Lynn Corwin Jan 2008

The Michigan Prisoner Reentry Initiative: An Examination Of A Statewide Reentry Program, Michelle Lynn Corwin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The concept of prisoner reentry has only recently sparked a significant interest in the field of criminology and criminal justice; however, it is blatantly apparent that attention to the subject is not only needed but necessary. Each day men and women are sentenced to serve terms in prison systems throughout the country. Simultaneously, each day men and women are released from prison to reintegrate back into society. With the rising incarceration rates and rising release rates, it became clear that the United States has a difficult dilemma. Thus, attention to concepts that help in addressing such dilemmas, like prisoner reentry, …

What Law Enforcement In West Virginia Know About Stalking Crimes, Sandra Kiser-Griffith Jan 2008

What Law Enforcement In West Virginia Know About Stalking Crimes, Sandra Kiser-Griffith

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Emerging research is beginning to reveal how prevalent, and dangerous, stalking can be, especially in situations that involve domestic or former domestic partners. As front line responders to stalking-related crimes, it would seem imperative that law enforcement personnel have extensive training and be knowledgeable about a broad range of stalking-related issues. A victim’s well-being can be directly impacted by the actions and interventions of the officers handling his or her case. Unfortunately, however, many states, including West Virginia, still do not require that officers receive stalking training. In an attempt to establish how well informed law enforcement officers in West …

Signs For The Future Of Civil Justice Research, Brian H. Bornstein Jan 2008

Signs For The Future Of Civil Justice Research, Brian H. Bornstein

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

The chapters in the present volume [Civil Juries and Civil Justice (New York: Springer, 2008)] provide a number of signs for the future of civil justice research. Many of the signs are favorable and point to continued fruitful collaborations between legal and psychological researchers on pressing topics in the justice arena with important policy implications; yet the contributions also highlight several gaps in the literature, data limitations, and false steps. In other words, some of the signs are not-so-favorable, and there is still much work to be done. In this concluding commentary, I identify the major portents for the …
