Media Modifications For Native Plant Asemblages On Extensive Green Roofs, Richard K. Sutton Jun 2008

Media Modifications For Native Plant Asemblages On Extensive Green Roofs, Richard K. Sutton

Landscape Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Great Plains and Midwestern regions might profit from selecting species representing nearby mid and short grass prairies, not the tall grass prairie. Such assemblages should exhibit needed characteristics desirable on low-input extensive green roofs to withstand stresses of: drought, heat, cold, nutrient deficiencies and wind before providing expected benefits. While published research, and its recommendations are inconclusive or negative regarding efficacy of native prairie species for extensive green roofs, establishment data gathered in this study demonstrates placing native plant assemblages for extensive green roofs into modified media significantly improves their establishment and growth.

In the short-term soil doughtiness limits plant …

Urban Design Workshop

The Lincoln Vision Plan presents a concept for the evolution of Portland’s south downtown into a place where state-of-the-art resource management practices, unique systems of public open spaces, and a variety of transit options will support a vibrant, dynamic, high density, ecologically-friendly neighborhood. It is our hope that this Plan, created by Portland State University’s spring 2008 Urban Design Workshop, can serve as a foundation for further discussion and action to bring to life the immense potential underlying this district.

This project was conducted under the supervision of Donald J. Stastny and Edward Starkie.

Using Satellite Broadcasts To Educate The Public About Watershed Issues On A Regional Basis, Robert L. Mahler, Jan Seago, Robert Simmons, Scott Fedale

Journal of Extension

The Pacific Northwest Water Quality team developed a series of three regional (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, Washington) watershed issues satellite downlinked conferences that were delivered in 2002, 2003, and 2004 using a regional steering committee. These conferences were downlinked to a minimum of 38 educational sites each year with an annual attendance ranging from 300 to 1,000 educators, agency and non-profit personnel, and members of local watershed groups. Evaluations indicated that regional programming on certain topics is an efficient and effective alternative to individual state programming when both financial and human resources are limited in individual states.

Evolution Of Urban Design In Practice (Case Studies Of Chicago, Detroit And Cleveland Through Time), Sulabh Aryal

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the twentieth century various urban design theories came into light. These theories were sometimes original and sometimes derivative of some previous theory. These theories can be broadly categorized in different urban design models. The chronological study of different urban design theories gives us the theoretical and generic evolution of urban design. The practical evolution of urban design in any city can be different from the generic evolution of urban design. This thesis examines the urban design of three Midwestern American cities from their origins to the present day. The urban design of these cities, related to different time periods is …

High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut May 2008

High-Rise Neighborhood: Rethinking Community In The Residential Tower, Benjamin Hurlbut

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Within the United States, a growing sense of detachment exists. Conditions in both urban and suburban contexts have created a sense of social detachment where spaces do not exist which encourage social interaction. Without this social activity, neighbors become almost a disposable commodity as relationships never fully develop. This thesis will be an examination of environments which do and do not foster community relationships and an implementation of community into an urban multi-family residence.

A major part of the problem is the recent move to the suburbs, but urban buildings also exhibit a lack of spaces which help encourage a …

Traditional Natural Resource Use And Development In Northeast Thailand, Christie Moulton

Senior Honors Projects

This paper explores the effects of development projects on traditional natural resource use in three communities in Northeast Thailand, a region known as Isan. I interviewed villagers in each community and asked them to describe their environmental perceptions, management practices and livelihood strategies. Participants described several subsistence livelihoods that have traditionally been present in Isan. These include rice farming, fishing, community forestry, and wetland use. Residents from the three communities all described various cultural activities, knowledge systems, and religious ceremonies that are closely tied to their local resources. Raising silk worms, making clay pots, and performing rituals for a spirit …

Measuring Tsunami Planning Capacity On U.S. Pacific Coast, Zhenghong Tang, Michael K. Lindell, Carla S. Prater, Samuel D. Brody

Community and Regional Planning Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Abstract: The U.S. Pacific coastal states are at risk from both locally and distantly generated tsunamis. This vulnerability can be reduced by effective hazard management plans, but no studies have been conducted to determine how local jurisdictions have incorporated tsunami hazard management into their planning frameworks. This paper analyzes the quality of hazard management plans from 43 coastal counties in these states. Plan quality was measured by a plan evaluation protocol defined by five components and 37 indicators. The results show that few Pacific coastal counties have prepared well for tsunamis. Most plans have a weak factual basis, unclear goals …

External Assessment Of Ddg's Humanitarian Mine Action Programme In Somaliland, Tim Lardner May 2008

External Assessment Of Ddg's Humanitarian Mine Action Programme In Somaliland, Tim Lardner

Global CWD Repository

Danish Demining Group began operations in Somaliland in 1999, responding to a perceived need at the time. Over the following nine years, their operations removed significant numbers of mines and UXO and removed countless communities and individuals from the threat of mines and UXO. As time went on however, the organisation appeared to shift focus from a Danish Demining Group, to an organisation with a different set of objectives. That shift was initially away from mine clearance – understandable given the ongoing removal of landmines – and subsequently away from UXO clearance/removal – again, an understandable decision. This report considers …

Giving Process Its Due : Can Collaboration Help Environmental Markets Succeed?, John Robert Cochran Apr 2008

Giving Process Its Due : Can Collaboration Help Environmental Markets Succeed?, John Robert Cochran

Dissertations and Theses

Emerging environmental markets assign economic value to ecosystem services and exchange them in market-like transactions. These markets are characterized by diverse stakeholder interests interacting with minimally defined transaction steps and high uncertainty. In this context, process plays an important role in shaping the institutions that make markets work or fail. If process matters, then market organizers need to intentionally craft processes just as they intentionally design institutions. This project explores a subset of four relatively established water quality trading programs that involved diverse stakeholders, and used differing forms of collaboration to design institutions. This research tests whether sometimes subtle changes …

Cultivating Sustainability Through Participatory Action Research: Place -Based Education And Community Food Systems In Interior Alaska, Laura R. Henry-Stone Apr 2008

Cultivating Sustainability Through Participatory Action Research: Place -Based Education And Community Food Systems In Interior Alaska, Laura R. Henry-Stone

Indigenous Studies

As the environmental movement grows into a broader sustainability revolution, we must move beyond the traditional scope of environmental education to address social-ecological challenges through integrated education for sustainability. This research explores how place-based education can promote sustainability of a community food system in which feedbacks between production and consumption are integrated within a biocultural region. Through participatory action research, the project develops and demonstrates pedagogical components of sustainability that are applicable to formal and non-formal educational contexts. In this pedagogy, the purpose of sustainability education is to foster a community culture that will promote the emergence of sustainability in …

Towards Regenerative Development: A Methodology For University Campuses To Become More Sustainable, With A Focus On The University Of South Florida, Richard Keirs Mcdonald Iii Apr 2008

Towards Regenerative Development: A Methodology For University Campuses To Become More Sustainable, With A Focus On The University Of South Florida, Richard Keirs Mcdonald Iii

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The administrations of several universities have developed strategies to reduce the negative environmental effects created by their institutions. Because no single, comprehensive methodology to guide institutions to sustainability exists, these strategies range widely in scope. As well, the definition of "sustainability" differs for these various institutions, resulting in strategies ranging from small-scale recycling programs to major initiatives to incorporate green building and revamping curricula. This study attempts to create the first comprehensive methodology to guide university campuses and processes to become regenerative. Regenerative systems "produce more resources than needed, provide resources for other projects, and enhance [the] environment" (Bernheim 2003), …
