Design And Sustainable Development: What Is The Contribution That Design Can Make? A Case Study Of The Welsh Woollen Industry, Angharad Thomas Jul 2008

Design And Sustainable Development: What Is The Contribution That Design Can Make? A Case Study Of The Welsh Woollen Industry, Angharad Thomas

DRS Biennial Conference Series

This paper reports on ongoing research examining the contribution that design can make to sustainable development, that is:
'… development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs' (WCED, 1987, p. 43) It outlines the need for global sustainable development and its adoption into global and governmental policies. Both of the key concepts of design and sustainable development are discussed, as is the relationship between them (Spangenberg 2001, Walker 2006). The contradictions between design as a stimulator of consumption and its potential contribution to sustainable development are examined. The …

An Analysis Of Interface Quality For Decision Support, Timothy Maciag, Daryl H. Hepting

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper examines the quality of user interfaces in an application to choose products.A high-quality interface should enable users to perform prescribed tasks quickly and withouterrors. The interface should also enable users to find products which match their personal values.A high-quality interface can especially empower those diverse users who might otherwise beoverwhelmed by technology but who need information to ground their actions. By examininguser performance in such regards, insight into the quality of interface may be acheived. For thispurpose, we examined user performance while utilizing different interfaces for product selections. An analysis and discussion of the examination is presented, along with …

Shifting Ground To Address Climate Change: The Land Use Law Solution, John R. Nolon Jul 2008

Shifting Ground To Address Climate Change: The Land Use Law Solution, John R. Nolon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

This article conceives and describes a Land Use Stabilization Wedge: a strategy that aggregates these five wedges and further organizes strategic energies. This builds on Socolow’s optimistic assertion that “an excuse for inaction based on the world’s lack of technological readiness does not exist.” I assert that the existing legal authority of state and local governments to regulate and guide land use and building is a powerful “technology already deployed somewhere in the world.” The Land Use Stabilization Wedge aggregates several of Socolow’s initiatives and employs multiple mitigation techniques available to citizens in every locality in the country.

On The Role Of Reflection And Representation In Environmental Decision Support Systems, Timothy Maciag, Daryl H. Hepting Jul 2008

On The Role Of Reflection And Representation In Environmental Decision Support Systems, Timothy Maciag, Daryl H. Hepting

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Donald Norman describes how reflection enables us to critically analyse and review details, compare and contrast situational outcomes, and aid in our general decisionmaking abilities. Furthermore, he explains how through reflection, we increase our awareness - become smarter - which inevitably enables us to conduct more satisfying decision-making analyses. In a day and age where information is abundant, the activity of reflection may prove more difficult. This is particularly the case for evaluating alternatives for health and environmentally preferable product selection. Key in supporting consumers in such regard is the design of the user interface, one where the interactions provide …

Workshop Report — Crawdad Workshop 2007, Jihwang Yeo, David Kotz, Tristan Henderson

Dartmouth Scholarship

Wireless network researchers are hungry for data about how real users, applications, and devices use real networks under real network conditions. CRAWDAD, the Community Resource for Archiving Wireless Data at Dartmouth, is an NSF-funded project that is building a wireless network data archive for the research community. We host wireless data, and provide tools and documents to make it easy to collect and use wireless network data. We hope that this resource will help researchers to identify and evaluate real and interesting problems in mobile and pervasive computing. This report outlines the CRAWDAD project and summarizes the third CRAWDAD workshop, …

Biology-Inspired Approach For Communal Behavior In Massively Deployed Sensor Networks, Kennie H. Jones Jul 2008

Biology-Inspired Approach For Communal Behavior In Massively Deployed Sensor Networks, Kennie H. Jones

Computer Science Theses & Dissertations

Research in wireless sensor networks has accelerated rapidly in recent years. The promise of ubiquitous control of the physical environment opens the way for new applications that will redefine the way we live and work. Due to the small size and low cost of sensor devices, visionaries promise smart systems enabled by deployment of massive numbers of sensors working in concert. To date, most of the research effort has concentrated on forming ad hoc networks under centralized control, which is not scalable to massive deployments. This thesis proposes an alternative approach based on models inspired by biological systems and reports …

Motivations For Participating In Community-Supported Agriculture And Their Relationship With Community Attachment And Social Capital, Joan M. Brehm, Brian W. Eisenhauer Jun 2008

Motivations For Participating In Community-Supported Agriculture And Their Relationship With Community Attachment And Social Capital, Joan M. Brehm, Brian W. Eisenhauer

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

The social fabric of rural communities is continuing to change as we move toward a more globalized society and food economy, and the vitality of rural agricultural communities in particular may be declining (Berry 1999). In response to these changes, efforts are underway in many parts of the United States to counteract this global, industrial food system and by implication, increase the vitality and sustainability of rural communities. One effort that is gaining momentum is the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) movement, which involves local farmers and community members working together as partners to create a sustainable local food system. It …

Sustainable Agriculture And The Social Sciences: Getting Beyond Best Management Practices And Into Food Systems, Jeffrey L. Jordan, Douglas H. Constance Jun 2008

Sustainable Agriculture And The Social Sciences: Getting Beyond Best Management Practices And Into Food Systems, Jeffrey L. Jordan, Douglas H. Constance

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper introduces the special issue of Southern Rural Sociology and lays the groundwork for the rest of the papers. The genesis of this special issue flows from the efforts of the Southern Region Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (S-SARE) program to bring more social science research into its portfolio of projects. Our concern is that by providing best management practices (Band-Aids) to a fundamentally unsustainable agricultural system, the sustainable agriculture movement (and SARE’s granting program) favors the environmental component at the expense of economic and social “legs” of the sustainable stool. While focusing on the history and work of …

Service-Learning At Rowan University: Perceived Impact On Selected Student Participants, Dawn E. Sandas Jun 2008

Service-Learning At Rowan University: Perceived Impact On Selected Student Participants, Dawn E. Sandas

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to explore the perceived impact that involvement in two service-learning courses had on participating Rowan University students during the spring semester of 2008. This study also investigated the impact of service-learning courses on the traditional classroom setting. Data were collected by means of a survey using Likert scale statements measuring related outcomes based on six components: academic, civic, developmental, social skills, leadership, and personal. Additionally, students were asked to rank those outcomes using another set of Likert scale items, comparing the service-learning experience to that of the traditional classroom setting. Overall, the data …

Working Trees For Community Jun 2008

Working Trees For Community

Working Trees (USDA-NAC)

Working Trees for Communities is the adaptation of agroforestry technologies to assist communities of all sizes achieve environmental, social, and economic goals, especially at the rural/urban interface.

Today, communities are challenged with accommodating new growth while maintaining the integrity of existing neighborhoods. Accommodating health, safety, transportation, quality of life, economics, environmental quality, and infrastructure development can often lead to land use conflicts. Compromises are often needed to achieve a workable plan.

Today, community residents, businesses, rural landowners, and local leaders must look beyond their own backyards. What is done by one resident or business can affect the community and the …

Benchmarking Community Investments In Green Building And Green Buying Programs In Five U.S. Cities, Shanna Nicole Eller

Dissertations and Theses

This is a study of what can be learned from leading U.S. cities about their work on environmental sustainability program efforts and what that information suggests for other cities considering a move into the environmental sustainability arena. The study focuses on green building and buying programs.

This is an exploratory study aimed at determining if detailed information, recommended for pursuit by Portney (2003), is available regarding: (a) how individual city sustainability programs got started; (b) how they maintain or fail to maintain themselves; (c) what they have been able to achieve programmatically; and (d) how effectively they have accomplished environmental …
