Views Of Community Life In Rural Nebraska, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce B. Johnson, David J. Peters Jan 2008

Views Of Community Life In Rural Nebraska, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce B. Johnson, David J. Peters

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Most of the smaller communities in rural Nebraska have experienced population decline since 2000 while most of the larger communities have experienced population growth. Given these conditions, how do rural Nebraskans feel about their community? Are they satisfied with the services provided? Are they planning to move from their community next year? How do they view the quality of life in their community? What factors are important in contributing to the quality of life in their community? Do their perceptions differ by community size, the region in which they live, or their occupation? This report details 2,496 responses to the …

Television Signal Changes And Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca Vogt, Randolph Cantrell, Miguel Carranza, Bruce Johnson, David Peters Jan 2008

Television Signal Changes And Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca Vogt, Randolph Cantrell, Miguel Carranza, Bruce Johnson, David Peters

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Starting in mid-February 2009, all television stations in the country can only broadcast a digital signal. This change does not affect households that currently receive their television signal from a cable or satellite TV provider, only those that receive their signal over-the-air through an antenna or rabbit ears. The 2008 Nebraska Rural Poll included questions related to television viewing, providing a picture of the effect this change will have on 2,496 randomly selected nonmetropolitan Nebraskans.

Perceptions Of Well-Being And Personal Finances Among Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce B. Johnson, David J. Peters Jan 2008

Perceptions Of Well-Being And Personal Finances Among Rural Nebraskans, Rebecca J. Vogt, Randolph L. Cantrell, Miguel A. Carranza, Bruce B. Johnson, David J. Peters

Publications from the Center for Applied Rural Innovation (CARI)

Nebraska has experienced slow economic growth recently. However, the state has also seen higher farm income this past year. How do rural Nebraskans perceive their quality of life? Do their perceptions differ by community size, the region in which they live, or their occupation? How concerned are rural Nebraskans about their personal finances? This report provides a detailed analysis of these questions.

This report details 2,496 responses to the 2008 Nebraska Rural Poll, the thirteenth annual effort to understand rural Nebraskans’ perceptions. Respondents were asked a series of questions about their individual well-being. Trends for some of these questions are …

The Great Divide: Exploring The Attitudes Of Sociology And Economics Faculty Toward Certain Aspects Of Economic Globalization, Kevin Trepus Jan 2008

The Great Divide: Exploring The Attitudes Of Sociology And Economics Faculty Toward Certain Aspects Of Economic Globalization, Kevin Trepus

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The socioeconomic ramifications analysts attribute to modern economic globalization are highly varied and represent a subject of great controversy. With regard to the nature of this controversy, many analysts allege a divide exists between sociologists’ and economists’ perspectives. Using survey methodology, I explored this alleged disciplinary divide on a small scale by investigating the attitudes of sociology and economics faculty about the socioeconomic consequences of certain aspects of economic globalization – capital control reduction within international financial markets, the proliferation of transnational corporations, the implementation of NAFTA, and the functioning of international trade and financial institutions. My survey data revealed …

Restoring The Ada And Beyond: Disability In The 21st Century, Robert L. Burgdorf Jan 2008

Restoring The Ada And Beyond: Disability In The 21st Century, Robert L. Burgdorf

Journal Articles

Perhaps it was imprudent for me to agree, in response to the request of the symposium organizers, to address the future of disability law. Nobel Prize-winning physicist Neils Bohr supposedly once said that "[p]rediction is very difficult, especially about the future."' Columnist and author Jim Bishop wrote, "The future is an opaque mirror. Anyone who tries to look into it sees nothing but the dim outlines of an old and worried face." 2 Prognosticating is a very tricky and uncertain undertaking. I cannot pretend to have any particular gift for crystal ball gazing in disability matters. When I joined the …

How To Escape Modernity?: An Actor-Network Theory Take On Organizational Forming, Paul Donnelly Jan 2008

How To Escape Modernity?: An Actor-Network Theory Take On Organizational Forming, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

The topic of organizational form has been gaining increased attention. Often portrayed as ‘new times’ driving the need for new forms, what is more evident in the literature is that the need for new ways of looking at form has yet to be addressed. The problem that “new organizational form” presents is precisely located in the inability of the field to think in other than “form” itself. By problematizing the focus on “form,” I take issue with the largely ahistorical and aprocessual character of much organizational theorizing and with the privilege obtained by modernist paradigmatic approaches in such theorizing. With …

Anglo-American And Continental Systems: Marsupials And Mammals Of The Law., Richard O. Lempert

Book Chapters

When Peter Tillers invited me to participate in this festschrift for Mirjan Damaška, I proposed to write a short concluding essay reviewing the articles in this volume and drawing links between them. Perhaps I should have anticipated that this would be no easy task, and maybe even have foreseen that it was an assignment I would eventually shun. I should have known that there would not be the six to eight articles I anticipated but the 17 that have been submitted. Had I thought more, I would have realised that there would be many people, myself included, who would seek …

Methinks The Lady Doth Protest Too Little: Reassessing The Probative Value Of Silence, Mikah K. Thompson Jan 2008

Methinks The Lady Doth Protest Too Little: Reassessing The Probative Value Of Silence, Mikah K. Thompson

Faculty Works

The syllogism goes as follows: major premise - Innocent people proclaim their innocence in response to an accusation; minor premise - Defendant failed to respond to an officer's accusation that he killed his wife; conclusion - Defendant is guilty of killing his wife. This syllogism is the basis upon which courts and lawmakers allow a defendant's silence to be admitted into evidence as proof of guilt. They reason that it is quite appropriate for jurors to infer that innocent people would proclaim their innocence and, therefore, a defendant's decision not to speak constitutes evidence of his or her guilt.

Contract Enslavement Of Female Migrant Domestic Workers In Saudi Arabia And The United Arab Emirates, Romina Halabi Jan 2008

Contract Enslavement Of Female Migrant Domestic Workers In Saudi Arabia And The United Arab Emirates, Romina Halabi

Human Rights & Human Welfare

Slavery was not abolished in Saudi Arabia until 1962, and in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) until 1963. It is unsurprising, then, that contract slavery of domestic servants continues to thrive in much of the Persian Gulf, where local economies prosper on the immigration of foreign workers. Economic incentives on the part of the sending and receiving nations encourage the migration of female workers from their home countries to Saudi Arabia and to the UAE. These incentives, coupled with restrictive contract systems, bind the female domestic worker to her employer and create an environment conducive to exploitation and involuntary servitude.

Start Talking: A Handbook For Engaging Difficult Dialogues In Higher Education, Kay Landis, Patricia Jenkins, Libby Roderick, Paola Banchero, John Dede Jan 2008

Start Talking: A Handbook For Engaging Difficult Dialogues In Higher Education, Kay Landis, Patricia Jenkins, Libby Roderick, Paola Banchero, John Dede

Books

“Civil Discourse Under Fire” You probably won’t see the above words as a headline in your morning newspaper any time soon, but it’s happening nonetheless. Civil discourse seems to be in trouble. The art of respectful argument and the effort to find mutual solutions seem to be losing ground. Our public debates on critical issues are filled with sound bites instead of substance, and our popular culture seems motivated more by the desire to dominate and win than by the commitment to learn, understand, seek common ground, or persuade. There’s trouble in the Academy too. Faculty members are challenged for …

Entrepreneurship And Self-Employment: The State-Of-The-Art And Directions For Future Research, Giseung Kim

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

This survey overviews the literature on entrepreneurship and self-employment. The author catalogs the main contributions of this body of research and makes a distinction between issues on which there is now widespread agreement and those for which no consensus has yet emerged. This latter set of issues provides fertile ground for further research.
