Sex On The Brain: The Rise And Fall Of German Sexual Science, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D. Jan 2008

Sex On The Brain: The Rise And Fall Of German Sexual Science, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Throughout the 19th century, German medical, scientific and legal scholars found themselves puzzled and engaged by the diverse forms of human sexuality. Psychiatrists like Richard von Krafft-Ebing interested in explaining deviance encountered scientifically trained advocates for emancipation like Magnus Hirschfeld, and the result was the new – if unstable – discipline of sexual science. Because they based arguments for social intervention on knowledge of nature and the body, the field’s proponents – like the advocates of eugenics and racial hygiene – argued that they were biologists. After 1900, this mutual biological engagement of sexual science and eugenics revealed itself in …

What Happens To Countess Geschwitz? Revisiting Homosexuality In Horkheimer And Adorno, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D. Jan 2008

What Happens To Countess Geschwitz? Revisiting Homosexuality In Horkheimer And Adorno, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

In the philosophical and culture-critical works of Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer, the concept of homosexuality exists almost always in close textual relation to fascist domination. This is because they cannot see homosexual persons as existing outside the dominating discourses of the nineteenth-century bourgeois legal and psychiatric explication of homosexuality. This issue throws the stakes of ethical reflection in Critical Theory into high relief, especially since feminist thinkers including Judith Butler have recently provided a highly positive rereading of Adorno’s ethics. A close reading of Adorno’s exploration of Alban Berg’s opera Lulu further demonstrates the labile ethical and philosophical status …

HIV and AIDS

In Kenya the proportion of eligible HIV-positive children receiving ART treatment is only 11 percent. This study explored and documented possible barriers in the community to accessing pediatric HIV testing and treatment, to guide the development of new interventions to encourage uptake. The study identified barriers such as cost, use of traditional healers, low knowledge of treatment options, attitudinal barriers, stigma, unique treatment issues, and dissatisfaction with available services. Additionally, healthcare workers missed opportunities to provide services and cited numerous service-side challenges. The study recommends prioritizing community awareness, mobile clinics, strengthening capacity of healthcare workers, supporting family-based HIV testing, and …

HIV and AIDS

The present study was undertaken by the Population Council in partnership with Annamali University, Tamil Nadu, India to study the broad patterns and motivating forces driving migrant men’s mobility and the contexts that determine and influence their engaging in high-risk activities that increase their vulnerability to HIV. The results indicate large interdistrict movements of working men in Tamil Nadu with a little variation across districts and greater mobility among younger men. Research results suggest that further examination of the contract system under which many of the migratory laborers work is a potential focus for program intervention. Places of origin offer …

HIV and AIDS

In Karnataka, South India, HIV infection is spreading, with female sex workers (FSWs) a high-risk group. In an effort to gain control over the epidemic, the HIV/AIDS program has made substantial efforts in the last few years toward offering FSWs access to information about sexually transmitted infections/HIV/AIDS and to condoms, clinics, and other medical services. The present study was undertaken by the Karnataka Health Promotion Trust and the Population Council to determine the patterns and factors that drive mobility among FSWs and the association of mobility with HIV risk. The report’s findings—including mobility routes, sociodemographic profiles of FSWs, membership in …

Actor-Network Theory And Organizational Forming: An Amodern Path Dependence Perspective, Paul Donnelly Jan 2008

Actor-Network Theory And Organizational Forming: An Amodern Path Dependence Perspective, Paul Donnelly

Conference papers

The organizational theory literature has identified the emergence and evolution of organizational forms as a critical issue to be addressed, yet new ways of looking at organizational form have yet to be addressed and there are concerns about the largely ahistorical and aprocessual character of much organizational theorizing. While path dependence, as conventionally conceived, presents an avenue for overcoming the lack of historical contingency in mainstream organizational theories, it does not maintain an opening for forming. Here is where actor-network theory comes in to not only argue that organizational forming is ongoing, but also show how it is made unrecognizable …

Reformist Reforms, Non-Reformist Reforms And Global Justice: Activist, Ngo And Intellectual Challenges In The World Social Forum, Bond

Societies Without Borders

The author reflects on his involvement with the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, held in Nairobi, Kenya because he participated in the preliminary planning. As a social scientist, he reflects on the forum's significance in global society and vis-a-vis global capitalism. He also explores the debate in South Africa over the merits of WSF.

Sociology, Human Rights, And The World Social Forum, Frezzo Jan 2008

Sociology, Human Rights, And The World Social Forum, Frezzo

Societies Without Borders

The author contends that the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, mobilizes the principles of prefigurative politics and subsidiarty to avoid the pitfalls of developmantism. He also argues that the principles of prefigurative politics and subsidiarity, in echoing the sentiments of movements led by indigenous activists, feminists and environmentalists, have facilitated the spread of the forum model across the world.

The World Social Forum, A Globalisation From Below?, Pleyers Jan 2008

The World Social Forum, A Globalisation From Below?, Pleyers

Societies Without Borders

The author argues that the World Social Forum (WSF), the annual meeting held by members of the anti-globalization or alter-globalization movement, came out as an initiative from committed intellectuals and cosmopolitan activists. He outlines the emergence process of an influential and well-connected activist cosmopolitan elite within the alter-globalization movement. He then focuses on consequences of the divide between hyper mobile, globe-trotting leaders and local and regional grassroots activists.

She identifies the ways in which her commitment to feminist research influence her scholarly practice. She reflects on the methodological challenges of scholar-activism and highlights several tenets of feminist methodology that bear particular importance for scholar-activists participating in and researching the social forum process.

Women's Health Transnational Networks, Corradi, Giovanna Vingelli Jan 2008

Women's Health Transnational Networks, Corradi, Giovanna Vingelli

Societies Without Borders

The emergence and diffusion of global networks working around health issues with a gender perspective (gender & health organizations) is a relatively new phenomenon characterizing the last three decades with growing interest in gender studies, sociology of health and sociology of social movements. A transnational dimension seems to be more fit to negotiate women's different conditions and interests - compared to traditional ones, whose actions remain limited to national arenas. We carried out exploratory research of about 284 international health-related organizations. Here we are going to present the results of a quantitative survey of 48 of them, dealing specifically on …

Critical Impairments To Globalizing The Western Human Rights Discourse, Imani Jan 2008

Critical Impairments To Globalizing The Western Human Rights Discourse, Imani

Societies Without Borders

This article focuses on the philosophical implications of Euro-centrism and Eurocentric discourse for the Western human rights narrative. It is argued that there is insufficient theoretical and practical consideration of those implications, particular for advocacy and activity in the so-called "Third World" where such arguments frequently become mere vehicles for the advance of economic and political neocolonialism. In many ways, colonialism with a humanistic, liberal democratic "face". Finally, a proposition is advanced that if the Western human rights discourse is to be effectively corrected and evolve into a global one, critiques of Euro-centrism from outside the Western discursive world must …

The Impact Of Recurring Natural Disasters On Chronic Poverty, Anwar Jan 2008

The Impact Of Recurring Natural Disasters On Chronic Poverty, Anwar

Societies Without Borders

Natural disasters disorder the existing everyday normative practices. The magnitude of any disaster creates risk and vulnerability in different ways that apply to different groups. The consequences of material and non-material risk and vulnerability downgrade the existing social structure and social order of the society, which reflects in the process of the cultural system, demographic scenario, social process, socialization, good governance and women empowerment. I use the concept "chronic poverty" as a condition created by intergenerational socio-economic and cultural processes. My analysis encompasses the interrelationship and interdependency between unequal access to resources and recovery process on the context of disaster …

Archaeoparasitology, Karl J. Reinhard, Adauto Araújo Jan 2008

Archaeoparasitology, Karl J. Reinhard, Adauto Araújo

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Parasites are the major cause of ill health and early death in the world today. Malaria, sleeping sickness, amoebic dysentery, and hookworm infection are examples of commonplace parasitic diseases that are endemic in most parts of the world (see Health, Healing, and Disease). They were significant threats in prehistory, especially in cultures whose social complexity outstripped the development of effective sanitation, hygiene, and germ theory awareness.

Investigating Community Factors As Predictors Of Rural 11th-Grade Agricultural Science Students’ Choice Of Careers In Agriculture, Omolola A. Adedokun, Mark Balschweid

Department of Agricultural Leadership, Education, and Communication: Faculty Publications

This study investigates the links between community contexts/factors and rural 11th-grade agricultural science students’ choice of careers in agriculture. A logistic regression model was developed and tested to examine the extent to which nine measures of community contexts (i.e., membership in FFA, membership in 4-H, community attachment, community satisfaction, length of residency in the community, positive perception of local community, preference for residing close to nature, and participation in volunteer activities) influence the odds of a student choosing a career in agriculture. The results show that the major community factors influencing the choice of agriculture related careers are membership in …

Demographic Characteristics And Concerns Of New Arrivals To Rural Nebraska, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Nicholas Pischel Jan 2008

Demographic Characteristics And Concerns Of New Arrivals To Rural Nebraska, James J. Potter, Rodrigo Cantarero, Nicholas Pischel

Architecture Program: Faculty Scholarly and Creative Activity

Immigration is often thought of as a problem primarily for large metropolitan areas. However, much of the recent literature dealing with the meat processing industry focuses on the migration it generates toward small, rural towns in the American Midwest. The prior studies frequently use a qualitative method. The primary goal of this study was to explore the characteristics of new arrivals to two Midwestern towns (Schuyler and Crete, Nebraska). The basic method used for developing the inventory of demographic characteristics and concerns was analyzing data from two quantitative studies previously conducted by the authors. Identical questions were selected from each …
