Cheating With Honor, Christian A. Pfeiffer Jan 2008

Cheating With Honor, Christian A. Pfeiffer

Business and Economics Honors Papers

The intent of this paper is to understand what leads a student to cheat within the context of a small (enrollment below 2,000 students) liberal arts college. The development of a model will examine cheating from three categories highlighted in the literature: demographics, college culture, and the perception of cheating. Demographics capture relevant personal attributes of a student such as gender, GPA, and major. Cultural variables include variables for the presence of an honor code and participation in a sport or social organization, which provide that student with a unique cultural experience. Perception variables deal with the perceptions the students …

Role-Play: An Often Misused Active Learning Strategy, Stephanie Nickerson Jan 2008

Role-Play: An Often Misused Active Learning Strategy, Stephanie Nickerson

Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education: Archives

Role-play is a special kind of case study, in which there is an explicit situation established with students playing specific roles, spontaneously saying and doing what they understand their “character” would, in that situation. Role-plays differ from other case studies in the immediacy of the experience. Students find themselves in the role-play. In a case study, they read about situations and characters. One of the reasons role-play can work so well is because of the power of placing oneself in another’s shoes. This provides opportunities for learning in both the affective domain, where emotions and values are involved, as well …

Corruption Of Religion And The Establishment Clause, Andrew Koppelman Jan 2008

Corruption Of Religion And The Establishment Clause, Andrew Koppelman

Faculty Working Papers

Government neutrality toward religion is based on familiar considerations: the importance of avoiding religious conflict, alienation of religious minorities, and the danger that religious considerations will introduce a dangerous irrational dogmatism into politics and make democratic compromise more difficult. This paper explores one consideration, prominent at the time of the framing, that is often overlooked: the idea that religion can be corrupted by state involvement with it. This idea is friendly to religion but, precisely for that reason, is determined to keep the state away from religion.

If the religion-protective argument for disestablishment is to be useful today, it cannot …

Recreating Faulkner: Cleanth Brooks’ Use Of Faulkner As New Critical Exemplar, Dana W. Mcmichael Jan 2008

Recreating Faulkner: Cleanth Brooks’ Use Of Faulkner As New Critical Exemplar, Dana W. Mcmichael

Robert Penn Warren Studies

Cleanth Brooks’ emphasis on textual structure helped move Faulkner criticism in new directions. Though early reviews and critical treatments of William Faulkner’s works frequently speculated on his literary intentions, combed his words for various ideologies, or sought a Jamesian realism, Brooks’ earliest studies of Faulkner insisted that his novels and stories be appreciated for their mastery of form. Although Brooks’ later studies have received much of the attention they deserve, his earliest essays on Faulkner have been largely neglected. Cumulatively, Brooks’ many articles and book-length studies of Faulkner’s fiction seek to repackage him as a Modernist writer whose works are …

Forms Of Graduate Music Education: A Response To Kenneth Phillip, David G. Hebert Jan 2008

Forms Of Graduate Music Education: A Response To Kenneth Phillip, David G. Hebert

Research & Issues in Music Education

It is truly an honor to see a response to my article from Professor Kenneth H. Phillips, in his “Graduate Music Education” within Research and Issues in Music Education, 6(1). Professor Phillips is an outstanding scholar and educator who has made a unique and important contribution to the fields of music education research and practice. His book on choral music is unusually insightful, and his most recent book on music education research is also a highly recommended resource that I use for my own graduate courses, some of which are online (Phillips, 2003; Phillips, 2008). I encourage readers to give …

A Tale Of Two Case Methods, Benjamin H. Barton Jan 2008

A Tale Of Two Case Methods, Benjamin H. Barton

Scholarly Works

This essay argues that law schools should adopt the business school case method. Business school cases are generally real life problems. They ask the students to read the files and then perform actual management tasks. The students also generally work in teams and are graded on their actual work throughout the semester. The students thus spend their time learning how to actually manage, instead of only learning dry management theory.

There are several advantages to the business school case method. The business school case method is much more focused on the actual process of being a business manager. By comparison, …

When Informal Adoption Meets Intestate Succession: The Cultural Myopia Of The Equitable Adoption Doctrine, Michael J. Higdon Jan 2008

When Informal Adoption Meets Intestate Succession: The Cultural Myopia Of The Equitable Adoption Doctrine, Michael J. Higdon

Scholarly Works

In certain circumstances, the equitable adoption doctrine allows a person to inherit as the child of a testator even when the testator was neither that person's biological or adoptive parent. Although this doctrine, at first blush, might appear to be a move toward a more inclusive system of intestate succession, as many scholars have noted, the restrictive tests that the various courts have designed to determine who qualifies as an equitably adopted child have only served to greatly undermine the utility of the doctrine and, in numerous cases, have led to the denial of rather compelling claims.

While agreeing with …

Does Sarbanes-Oxley Foster The Existence Of Ethical Executive Role Models In The Corporation?, Joan Macleod Heminway Jan 2008

Does Sarbanes-Oxley Foster The Existence Of Ethical Executive Role Models In The Corporation?, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

If compliance with, or the efficacy of, Sarbanes-Oxley and other corporate governance initiatives requires that executives (or other firm leaders) be good ethical role models, then it is important to ask whether Sarbanes-Oxley - or any other attribute of existing corporate governance regulation - in fact promotes or permits the production or preservation of ethical role models in the executive ranks of public companies. An absence of support for ethical role models in public companies may signal the failure of broad-based federal corporate governance initiatives like Sarbanes-Oxley.

This Article assumes that ethical roles models may be important to the maintenance …

Functionalism, Curtis Brown Jan 2008

Functionalism, Curtis Brown

Philosophy Faculty Research

The term functionalism has been used in at least three different senses in the social sciences. In the philosophy of mind, functionalism is a view about the nature of mental states. In sociology and anthropology, functionalism is an approach to understanding social processes in terms of their contribution to the operation of a social system. In psychology, functionalism was an approach to mental phenomena which emphasized mental processes as opposed to static mental structures.

Envious Enemies Of The Cross Of Christ (Philippians 3:18), David E. Fredrickson

Faculty Publications

Contrary to the common understanding, the “enemies of the cross of Christ” in Phil 3:18 are the same people who “proclaim Christ from envy and rivalry” in 1:15. These “enemies” want Paul’s fame, but not the suffering that is built into loving.

Northwest Arkansas Community Indicators: A Quality-Of-Life Assessment, Kevin M. Fitzpatrick, Brad A. Myrstol Jan 2008

Northwest Arkansas Community Indicators: A Quality-Of-Life Assessment, Kevin M. Fitzpatrick, Brad A. Myrstol

Health

Northwest Arkansas has experienced considerable transformation in its soft infrastructure (demography, health, education, arts, civic engagement, etc.) over the last thirty years. The changes occurring in Northwest Arkansas have created a number of significant challenges that the region must acknowledge and address head-on, but certainly not all the changes have had a negative effect. The regions metamorphosis has invigorated communities throughout the area and created a tremendous set of social, economic, and cultural opportunities.

The intent of this quality of life report is two-fold. First, is to provide the people of Northwest Arkansas with an empirically grounded understanding of the …
