Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Exploring Interdisciplinary Prayer Research In A Health Context, E. James Baesler
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Communication, Psychology, and Sociology are three leading academic disciplines engaged in the social scientific study of prayer, the spiritual communication between a believer(s) and God, but rarely do these disciplines collaborate in interdisciplinary prayer scholarship. Possibilities for interdisciplinary prayer research in a health context are explored through a review of the literature and academic interviews. Interdisciplinary linkages in the prayer-health context are organized in an integral "all-quadrant" theoretical model, and an assessment of the viability of interdisciplinary prayer-health research is considered.
This-Worldly Explanations For Otherworldly Growth: Vitality In An Ozarks Megachurch, Joseph Lee Dutko
This-Worldly Explanations For Otherworldly Growth: Vitality In An Ozarks Megachurch, Joseph Lee Dutko
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
James River Assembly, a Pentecostal megachurch in the Missouri Ozarks, grew from forty-two people in 1991 to over nine thousand in 2008. What led to such growth? Using ethnographic research methods such as interviews and twenty months of field observations, this study uses the story of James River Assembly to enter into the debate on congregational vitality. Three reasons emerge for the growth and strength of the church: excitement and optimism, an apocalyptic worldview, and a clear sense of identity embraced as a worthy pursuit by members. Each chapter presents theories of vitality that are useful for understanding growth at …

Naming A Place Nicodemus, Rosamond C. Rodman
Naming A Place Nicodemus, Rosamond C. Rodman
Great Plains Quarterly (through 2013)
Nicodemus, one of the first all-black settlements in Kansas, and the sole remaining western town founded by and for African Americans at the end of Reconstruction, has received a good deal of scholarly attention. Yet one basic matter about it remains unclear: how the town came by its unusual name. Most scholars now think that the name of the town derives from a legendary slave rather than the biblical character.
This essay challenges that consensus, contending the name Nicodemus indeed refers to the biblical character, and in doing so exemplifies the way that the dominated disguise their speech, making it …

“Civil Discourse Under Fire” You probably won’t see the above words as a headline in your morning newspaper any time soon, but it’s happening nonetheless. Civil discourse seems to be in trouble. The art of respectful argument and the effort to find mutual solutions seem to be losing ground. Our public debates on critical issues are filled with sound bites instead of substance, and our popular culture seems motivated more by the desire to dominate and win than by the commitment to learn, understand, seek common ground, or persuade. There’s trouble in the Academy too. Faculty members are challenged for …
Some Rudimentary Problems Pertaining To The Construction Of An Ontology And Epistemology Of Shamanic Journeying Imagery, Adam J. Rock, Stanley Krippner
Some Rudimentary Problems Pertaining To The Construction Of An Ontology And Epistemology Of Shamanic Journeying Imagery, Adam J. Rock, Stanley Krippner
International Journal of Transpersonal Studies
Attempts to elucidate the kinds of “thing” or “things” to which the term shamanic journeying
image is referentially linked must grapple with two related questions: what is the fundamental
nature of shamanic journeying images, and how might the origin of a shamanic
journeying image be found? The first question is ontological, concerned with the nature
and essence of shamanic journeying images. In contrast, the second is epistemological and
methodolgical, concerned with how to acquire knowledge of shamanic journeying images.
We demonstrate how inductive and deductive reasoning, the private language argument,
and reification render problematic the resolution of both. Finally, we …

In The Footsteps Of Orson Hyde: Subsequent Dedications Of The Holy Land, Blair G. Van-Dyke, Lamar C. Berrett
BYU Studies
In October 1841, Orson Hyde traveled to Jerusalem and dedicated the Holy Land for the gathering of Judah. Hyde's dedication was the first of eleven formal dedications performed in the Holy Land in this dispensation, and while each one was given for the purpose of preparing the land for the return of Israel, each dedication also contained unique content. The authors discuss each dedication and the historical and political contexts affecting each prayer. They assert that repetition indicates importance, and no other place has been repeatedly dedicated like the Holy Land.

Panel: Ethics-Based Decision-Making In Societal Water Management, Amy Hardberger
Panel: Ethics-Based Decision-Making In Societal Water Management, Amy Hardberger
Faculty Articles
There is an ethical overlay to water-related decision-making and management, frequently drawing on personal experiences with water and the ubiquitous need for water. The modern South African Bill of Rights, ensuring its people’s access to water; the movement towards recognizing water as a basic human right; and even occurrences in Texas, including the passage of “environmental flows legislation” and the efforts to preserve and protect the Edwards Aquifer, reflect the presence of ethics in decision-making with respect to water management. Ethics are a part of water management decision-making.

Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
The Global Dictionary of Theology is inspired by the shift of the center of Christianity from the West to the Global South. But it also reflects the increase in two-way traffic between these two sectors as well as the global awareness that has permeated popular culture to an unprecedented degree.
The editorial perspective of the Global Dictionary of Theology is an ecumenical evangelicalism that is receptive to discovering new facets of truth through listening and conversation on a global scale. Thus a distinctive feature of the Global Dictionary of Theology is its conversational approach. Contributors have been called on to …

What Hymns Early Mormons Sang And How They Sang Them, Michael Hicks
What Hymns Early Mormons Sang And How They Sang Them, Michael Hicks
BYU Studies
Hymns reveal a denomination's minds and hearts, but not every published hymn is sung frequently—or at all. Hicks claims that to understand early Mormon thought and belief, one must not only study published Mormon hymnals but also consider which hymns were favored by congregations. He examines the few meeting notes that exist as well as over two hundred Saints' diaries to get a small sample of what hymns Mormons sang. Among the favorites were "The Spirit of God" and "Adam-ondi-Ahman." Hicks also discusses the kinds of hymns sung in home devotionals and other informal meetings and the way Mormon congregations …

Mb 780 Cross-Cultural Christian Discipling, W. Jay Moon
Syllabi
A study of the role of ritual process in the shaping of believers. Rites and ceremonies, especially initiatory rites, from a variety of religious traditions provide both models of the role of ritual in the formation and nurture of persons and models for discipling Christian converts, especially those from traditional religious backgrounds. Students will construct their own structures for the discipling task based upon the insights and models provided by the course.
