The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
The Characterisation Of God In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
One of the dominant characters within the book of Lamentations is God. God is spoken about and spoken to, although the voice of God is never heard. Various voices within the text speak of God, describing both God’s actions and God’s attributes. These descriptions give rise to various, and at times conflicting images: God is the violent destroyer of the city and her inhabitants; God is an absent God, whose presence is longed for; God is a God of steadfast love and mercy; God is the one in whom future hope lies. This paper analyses the multifaceted portrayal of the …

Constructing Meaning In The Face Of Suffering: Theodicy In Lamentations, Elizabeth Boase
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
This article explores the existence of theodic elements within the book of Lamentations. Drawing on the typology outlined by A. Laato and J. C. de Moor (Th eodicy in the World of the Bible [Leiden, 2003]) it is identified that Lamentations explores both retributive and educative theodicy within its poems. Other theodic solutions are not, however, present. Although these theodic solutions are present, it cannot be argued that Lamentations constitutes a theodicy as such. Rather, the poems raise and in turn subvert a range of possible theodic assertions in response to the existential crisis which emerged in the wake of …
To Imprecate Or Not: Psalm 137 And Its Appropriation In Music, Elizabeth Boase
To Imprecate Or Not: Psalm 137 And Its Appropriation In Music, Elizabeth Boase
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
Psalm 137 opens with lament and closes with one of the most strident imprecations in the Psalter. Read against the backdrop of the Babylonian exile, the imprecation incorporates both Edom and Babylon, concluding with the words “Happy shall they be who take your little ones and dash them against the rock.”
The closing verses have proven to be problematic for commentators. The tension is well expressed by R. Clifford, who states “Psalm 137 has the distinction of having one of the most beloved opening lines and the most horrifying closing line of any psalm. If the psalm ended at verse …
A Pastoral Paradigm Of Catholic Health Care, Mark Shaw
A Pastoral Paradigm Of Catholic Health Care, Mark Shaw
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
Catholic hospitals and other health services provide invaluable care to many in the community. This article accentuates the pastoral nature of Catholic health care, which is definitive to its Catholic identity. Discussing contemporary Catholic health care in conjunction with the works of Henri Nouwen we explore the challenges faced by today’s Catholics in Catholic health care and respond to these issues. In support of the discussion are the results of qualitative research into the perceptions Perth Parishioners have of Catholic health care’s pastoral nature and Catholic identity. This research aims towards understanding the challenges facing catholic health care providing pastoral …
To Nourish Or Destroy?, Clare V. Johnson
To Nourish Or Destroy?, Clare V. Johnson
Theology Papers and Journal Articles
“Good celebrations foster and nourish faith. Poor celebrations may weaken and destroy it” – this statement from Music in Catholic Worship, sums up well the instinct that many people have about the relationship between liturgy and faith. Those charged with the responsibility of planning and leading liturgical celebrations hold a sacred trust – to do everything in their power to ensure that the celebrations they plan and lead are in fact ‘good’ celebrations from the perspective of the worshipping assembly whose faith can be either nourished or destroyed by those celebrations, and from the perspective of the Church which has …

"The Anchor Of The Soul That Enters Within The Veil": The Ascension Of The "Son" In The Letter To The Hebrews, Felix H. Cortez
Dissertations
Problem
This dissertation studies the nature of Jesus’ ascension to heaven and its role in the argument of Hebrews.
Method
The study consists of an analysis of those passages in which Jesus’ ascension is referred to directly (Heb 1:6; 4:14-16; 6:19-20; 9:11-14, 24; 10:19-22) and a study of the imagery Hebrews uses to couch its theology, giving special attention to the role of this imagery in the progression of the argument. The study is both exegetical and theological in nature, seeking to provide an analysis of specific passages as well as systematization of their import.
Results
The six passages that …

Just Click Submit: The Collection, Dissemination, And Tagging Of Personally Identifying Information, Corey Ciocchetti
Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law
As the twenty-first century bustles forward, the e-commerce arena becomes an ever more dangerous place. On a daily basis, Websites collect vast amounts of personally identifying information (PHII) and mine it in sophisticated databases to discover consumer trends and desires. This process provides many benefits--such as tailored Web sites and relevant marketing--that few Web surfers would care to do without. However, serious threats lurk in cyberspace and are enhanced by consumers who continue to submit vast amounts of information in a state of relative unawareness. Not wanting to miss out on their Web surfing experience, visitors submit their personal information …

Kierkegaard And/Or Catholicism: A Matter Of Conjunctions, Center For Catholic Studies, Seton Hall University
Kierkegaard And/Or Catholicism: A Matter Of Conjunctions, Center For Catholic Studies, Seton Hall University
Center for Catholic Studies Faculty Seminars and Core Curriculum Seminars
It is often said (accurately) that one of the distinguishing marks of a Catholic understanding of life is its both-and approach in contrast to the either-or approach more characteristic of a Protestant sensibility. For example, Catholics tend to live with and argue for both scripture and tradition, faith and works. The Danish Lutheran Søren Kierkegaard is often cited as a paradigm of Protestant either-or thinking. In this seminar we will explore what we might learn not only about Catholicism and Kierkegaard, but even more about Christianity, human life, and the logic of conjunction.

Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris
Using The Novel To Teach Multiculturalism, Michelle Loris
English Faculty Publications
Description of a fourteen week course taught by Michelle Loris, professor of English at Sacred Heart University. The course, titled Recent Ethnic American Fictions, introduced students to several concepts from contemporary literary theory. The theories included New Criticism, Deconstruction, Cultural Studies, New Historicism, and Feminist Theory. The assumption was that these concepts would give students the tools to become critical readers, which would then provide them with a deeper understanding of these multicultural novels and their particular cultural contexts. For a semester, reading and thinking about these multicultural novels engaged and challenged the students' assumptions about themselves and the America …
Thinking In/Of/With The Book: The Role Of The Book As The Medium For Philosophy In Deleuze, Derrida, And Smith, Scott Ziegler
Thinking In/Of/With The Book: The Role Of The Book As The Medium For Philosophy In Deleuze, Derrida, And Smith, Scott Ziegler
LSU Master's Theses
In this Thesis, I explore the role of the book as a medium for philosophy in Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. I begin by framing the debate in terms of the role of media in affecting the message. I then claim that while both Deleuze and Derrida must attempt to separate their own work from the traditional role of the book, they both fail to take the book itself into consideration. I claim that both Deleuze and Derrida accept the book as medium which reinforces a particular form of thought, and that their philosophies require a break from this form. …

The Mathematical In Heidegger And Badiou, Dylan Armstrong Wade
The Mathematical In Heidegger And Badiou, Dylan Armstrong Wade
LSU Master's Theses
In this thesis I am tracing the historical development of subjectivity from its skeptical foundation in Descartes to Alain Badiou’s subject as fidelity to truth. Drawing from Martin Heidegger’s What is a Thing?, this history begins with the turn from an Aristotelian to a Newtonian apprehension of motion, turning towards an a priori mathematical projection of spatial uniformity, such that there are no longer different places – only quantifiable distance. It is on the basis of this turning away from tradition, or ordinary experience of different phenomena, that Descartes posits the self-certain I-pole. Heidegger criticizes modernity, defined as the merging …
