What Does It Mean To Live A Fully Embodied Spiritual Life?, Jorge Ferrer Jan 2008

What Does It Mean To Live A Fully Embodied Spiritual Life?, Jorge Ferrer

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

This essay discusses the meaning of embodied spirituality—based on the integration of all

human attributes, including the body and sexuality—and contrasts it with the disembodied

spirituality—based on dissociation and/or sublimation—prevailing in human religious

history. It then describes what it means to approach the body as a living partner with which

to co-create one’s spiritual life, and outlines ten features of a fully embodied spirituality.

The article concludes with some reflections about the past, present, and potential future of

embodied spirituality.

The (Im)Possibilities Of Levinas For Christian Theology, Glenn J. Morrison Jan 2008

The (Im)Possibilities Of Levinas For Christian Theology, Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Conference Papers

The paper aims to show how Levinas’ philosophy opens up a style of thinking and suggests a vocabulary of expression that can serve Christian theology, especially by opening the possibility of a language of alterity, or radical “otherness”, in theology. Given our paradox of the (im)possibilities of Levinas for Christian theology and, hence, the very risk of falling into the language of onto-theology, the paper will firstly relate my approach to Levinas writings for the benefit of Christian theology.

My special concern for the talk will be to provide an example of doing theology with Levinas. To this end, I …

Transforming Love: Holiness And The Vocation Of Justice, Nancy M. Martin Jan 2008

Transforming Love: Holiness And The Vocation Of Justice, Nancy M. Martin

Religious Studies Faculty Books and Book Chapters

"Though we may draw a distinction between the saint and the social or peace activist and though the activist may criticize the saint for being insufficiently socially engaged, I will argue that the pursuit of holiness is not an alternate path to the pursuit of justice. It is not to be practiced only by saints, bodhisattvas and monastics, but rather is an integral part of the religious vocation of justice. Indeed the cultivation of holiness is a key element of the vocation of pursuing peace and justice even as the pursuit of justice, arising within the wider horizon of love …

The Fierce Tribe, Mickey Weems Jan 2008

The Fierce Tribe, Mickey Weems

All USU Press Publications

In this ethnography that documents the folk nature of popular culture, Mickey Weems applies interdisciplinary interpretation to a subject that demands such a breakdown of intellectual boundaries. The Circuit, an expression of gay culture, comprises large dance events—gatherings, celebrations, communions, festivals. Music and dance drive complex, shared performances—electronic house music played by professional DJs and mass ecstatic dancing that engenders communitas. Other performances, from drag queens and concerts to contests, theatrics, and the individual display of muscular bodies are part of the festivities.

Body sculpting through muscle building is strongly associated with the Circuit, and masculine aggression is both displayed …

Communalism Versus The Incentive To Free-Ride: Experimental Results From Economically Emergent Africa, Arthur J. Caplan, David Aadland, Anthony Macharia Jan 2008

Communalism Versus The Incentive To Free-Ride: Experimental Results From Economically Emergent Africa, Arthur J. Caplan, David Aadland, Anthony Macharia

Economic Research Institute Study Papers

This paper reports results from a public good experiment conducted in the African nation of Botswana. Our findings provide a test of whether' African communalism' influences willingness to contribute to the provision of public goods. As globalization expands markets, and economies such as Botswana's continue to modernize, there is an increasing need to understand how cultural factors might influence the valuation of public goods. We find evidence that stated willingness to contribute to a public good in a hypothetical setting is higher than actual contribution levels in a real setting. However, this is only true in the second and final …

An Epistle Of The Twelve, March 1842, Josh E. Probert Jan 2008

An Epistle Of The Twelve, March 1842, Josh E. Probert

BYU Studies

On March 20, 1842, ten members of the Twelve Apostles composed a long epistle to the Saints in Europe providing directives for immigration. The document reveals the way the Twelve planned to move converts from Europe to the Nauvoo area and the way resources would be provided for the Nauvoo Temple and Nauvoo House. The document also provides a window into the broader contours of Church governance during this for- mative time and the larger responsibilities of the Twelve after their return from their mission to the British Isles.

Alphabetical Lives: Early Modern German Biographical Lexicons And Encyclopedias, Richard G. Cole Jan 2008

Alphabetical Lives: Early Modern German Biographical Lexicons And Encyclopedias, Richard G. Cole

Quidditas

Those who appear obvious to us as “major players” in past eras may in part result from an unintended consequence of the work of early modern biographical lexicographers. By the eighteenth century, there were enough printed sources and available archival materials to deluge or even overwhelm historians and biographers with information about past actors of sixteenth century history. Those biographical lexicographers made choices about whom to give prominence and whom to minimize or ignore in their works.

A Schweitzer Approach To Higher Education: Utilizing Principles Drawn From The Life Of Albert Schweitzer To Develop A Holistic And Comprehensive Educational Model, John B. Miller

Theses and Graduate Projects

While quite young, Albert Schweitzer was already a well regarded philosopher, a gifted musician, and a groundbreaking theologian when he became a medical doctor and devoted his life to service in equatorial Africa where he received the inspiration for his central ethic of Reverence for Life. A Schweitzer-based higher educational approach draws upon Schweitzer's life example in interweaving elements of academics, arts, spirituality, service, and the direct experience of nature. The academic content is grounded in complexity theory, a post-moderm discipline which expands upon Schweitzer's recognition that, "l am life that wills to live in the midst of life that …
