Otibu, Johnson, Bronx African American History Project Oct 2008

Otibu, Johnson, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

Johnson Otibu (b. 1955) is the proprietor of the Sahara African Caribbean market in the Bronx. He came to New York from Ghana in 1978, at the age of 23. Otibu left a good job in the social security business in Ghana in order to try out the opportunities in America. When he immigrated, the exchange rate was 2 American dollars to every Ghanaian dollar, so Otibu arrived with more money than most immigrants. Initially he settled in Harlem on 150th St. and lived off of what he had brought. However, he soon realized that it was much harder …

The Role Of Pharmacists And Emergency Contraception: An Assessment Of Pharmacy School Curricula In The U.S. And The Knowledge, Attitudes, And Dispensing Practices Of Florida Pharmacists., Alice R. Richman Oct 2008

The Role Of Pharmacists And Emergency Contraception: An Assessment Of Pharmacy School Curricula In The U.S. And The Knowledge, Attitudes, And Dispensing Practices Of Florida Pharmacists., Alice R. Richman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Emergency contraception is a safe and effective form of contraception that is 75%-89% effective in preventing pregnancies within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse. Emergency contraception is a type of hormonal contraception, containing high doses of estrogen and progestin (ethinyl estradiol plus levonorgestrel) or progestin only (levonorgestrel). Wider access to emergency contraception has the potential to decrease the number of unintended pregnancies and abortions in the U.S. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously denied any over-the-counter (OTC) access to emergency contraception and only recently approved it for OTC status for women 18 years old and over; therefore, pharmacists continue …

Experiencing Visuo-Motor Plasticity By Prism Adaptation In A Classroom Setting, Andrea Li Oct 2008

Experiencing Visuo-Motor Plasticity By Prism Adaptation In A Classroom Setting, Andrea Li

Publications and Research

Neural plasticity is a key topic in the study of behavioral neuroscience, yet it can be a difficult concept to demonstrate in a classroom setting. In this report, we describe an interactive technique that can be used to demonstrate and quantify in a laboratory setting the plasticity of motor coordination to altered visual input, i.e. visuo-motor plasticity. Visual input can be easily altered by horizontally-displacing prism goggles. Open-loop motor coordination immediately after putting on these goggles is inaccurate. However, after performing a number of visuo-motor tasks wearing these goggles, coordination adapts and improves. Immediately after removing the goggles, a robust …

Public Opinion And The Introduction Of Congressional Environmental Legislation, 1973-2002, Hugh Eugene Jarvis Oct 2008

Public Opinion And The Introduction Of Congressional Environmental Legislation, 1973-2002, Hugh Eugene Jarvis

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the relationship between public opinion about the environment and the introduction of congressional legislation on environmental issues. Using public opinion data gathered by the General Social Survey from 1977 to 2002, this work examines correlations between how the public views the environment in each and the number of bills introduced in the U.S. House and Senate addressing environmental issues. The findings indicate that there is a correlation between overall concern felt in the public and congressional action on certain aspects of environmental protection. The results also highlight the potentially disturbing finding that the race and economic class …

What Explains The Incidence Of The Use Of A Mandated Erosion And Sediment Control At Residential Lots With Houses Under Construction?, Scott Templeton, Liv M. Haselbach Oct 2008

What Explains The Incidence Of The Use Of A Mandated Erosion And Sediment Control At Residential Lots With Houses Under Construction?, Scott Templeton, Liv M. Haselbach

S.C. Water Resources Conference

To analyze infrequent compliance with regulation of stormwater discharge, we estimate a random-cost model of the use of silt fence on a single-family lot under construction in an urbanizing county of the Southeast. The probability of silt-fence use increases if the original developer still owns the lot, a home owners association exists in the subdivision, or the neighborhood has a multi-family dwelling. The probability decreases as the mean cost of the lots and houses being built increase, heated floor space decreases, or the share of lots under construction decreases. These results can help county officials to target inspection where non-compliance …

Systemic Risk, Steven L. Schwarcz Oct 2008

Systemic Risk, Steven L. Schwarcz

Faculty Scholarship

Governments and international organizations worry increasingly about systemic risk, under which the world’s financial system can collapse like a row of dominoes. There is widespread confusion, though, about the causes and even the definition of systemic risk, and uncertainty about how to control it. This Article offers a conceptual framework for examining what risks are truly “systemic,” what causes those risks, and how, if at all, those risks should be regulated. Scholars historically have tended to think of systemic risk primarily in terms of financial institutions such as banks. However, with the growth of disintermediation, in which companies can access …

Measuring Teachers’ Learning From A Problem-Based Learning Approach To Professional Development In Science Education, Ayelet Weizman, Beth A. Covitt, Matthew J. Koehler, Mary A. Lundeberg, Joy A. Oslund, Mark R. Low, Janet Eberhardt, Mark Urban-Lurain

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

In this study we measured changes in science teachers’ conceptual science understanding (content knowledge) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) while participating in a problem-based learning (PBL) model of professional development. Teachers participated in a two-week long workshop followed by nine monthly meetings during one academic year that focused on deepening their content understanding and their teaching practices. We analyzed teachers’ short writings and concept map depictions of their understanding, and found teachers significantly developed components of pedagogical content knowledge and clinical reasoning, such as knowledge of assessment. Gains on conceptual understanding of science, however, were limited to one group of …

All Problems Are Not Equal: Implications For Problem-Based Learning, David H. Jonassen, Woei Hung Oct 2008

All Problems Are Not Equal: Implications For Problem-Based Learning, David H. Jonassen, Woei Hung

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional model that assumes the centrality of problems to learning. Research on PBL has focused on student learning, student roles, tutor roles, problem design, and technology use (Hung, Jonassen, & Liu, 2008), but little attention in the PBL literature has been paid to the nature of the problems that provide the focus for PBL. In this paper, we articulate a model for evaluating problem difficulty. Problem difficulty is define in terms of complexity, including breadth of knowledge, attainment level, intricacy of procedures, relational complexity, and problem structuredness including intransparency, heterogeneity of interpretations, interdisciplinarity, dynamicity, or …
