A Collaborative And Experiential Learning Model Powered By Real-World Projects, Mihaela C. Sabin Oct 2008

A Collaborative And Experiential Learning Model Powered By Real-World Projects, Mihaela C. Sabin

Applied Engineering and Sciences Scholarship

Information Technology (IT) curricula's strong application component and its focus on user centeredness and team work require that students experience directly real-world projects for real users of IT solutions. There is a certain level of risk involved with delivering a useful solution while, at the same time, enough room should be allowed for students to experiment with, be wrong about, review, and learn. Challenges pertaining to the …

Painted Skin: To Scare Or Not To Scare?, Haiyan Lee Oct 2008

Painted Skin: To Scare Or Not To Scare?, Haiyan Lee

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

It may come as a surprise that movies about ghosts and monsters are strictly speaking illegal in China, a land that has given us such an enchanting array of supernatural figures as the White Serpent Lady, the Weaving Girl, the three-headed Nuozha, and, of course, the delightful trickster Monkey. Gods and ghosts do show up on the Chinese screen, but they have to be framed as “characters” of folklore or fanciful creations of the “primitive” mind, something of ethnographic interest but no longer relevant to our sense of self and world. However, if they end up unsettling our secular confidence …

Revisiting Feminism: Who’S Afraid Of The F Word?, Delia D. Aguilar

Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies

"While preparing for today I discovered that I had already used the 'F' word in a panel presentation at Sarah Lawrence College almost 15 years ago. This was something I had completely forgotten. But that time I was questioning feminism itself: what’s wrong with the 'F' word?"

A Critical Appraisal Of Contemporary Aproaches In The Quantitative Analysis Of Behavior, J Moore Oct 2008

A Critical Appraisal Of Contemporary Aproaches In The Quantitative Analysis Of Behavior, J Moore

The Psychological Record

For over 40 years, much research has sought to mathematically describe the relation between operant choice responding and reinforcement. This quantitatively oriented research and the accompanying theoretical interpretation of the data are embedded in the broader context of general experimental psychology, which can at times be regrettably mentalistic. Researchers and theorists in the area of the quantitative analysis of behavior may therefore need to be sensitive to mentalistic influences arising from outside the experimental analysis of behavior. One possible mentalistic influence is the psychophysics of S. S. Stevens. A second is the use of “value” as an intervening, mediating organismic …

Exploring A Model Of Transcultural Nursing Practice That Promotes Cultural Care Preservation/Maintenance, Margaret Sormana Oct 2008

Exploring A Model Of Transcultural Nursing Practice That Promotes Cultural Care Preservation/Maintenance, Margaret Sormana

Theses and Graduate Projects

Migration is increasing due to instability in most parts of the world. Immigrants are faced with the choice to either maintain their unique cultural heritage or adopt the culture of the host country. Most immigrants desire to maintain their cultural heritage which requires balancing the values of their cultural heritage with those of the host country. Balancing includes silence which can reinforce self-blame when the values are in conflict. This project sought to break these patterns by engaging a group of Somali women in creative artistic activities. Based on Leininger's model of Cultural Care Diversity and Universality (1985), Watson's Human …
