Concert Promotion In A College Community: A Guide For The Hopeful Concert Promoter, Lori Ann Simpson

Honors Theses

This thesis was comprised of research in action in an attempt to plan and promote a concert in a college community. Research began in the summer of 2007 with an internship with Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter. After spending three months working in the live music industry, I decided to put that knowledge into practice by organizing an awareness concert for Mississippi Blood Services in Oxford, Mississippi. I spent much time planning this concert, first as a large outdoor event, and after it became evident that would not be possible, a smaller, local event at an Oxford venue. …

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Clergy spouses experience various life stressors, yet many cope and function effectively in the midst of their daily challenges. Mental health professionals were asked to identify wives of male clergy who exemplify emotional and spiritual health. Nominees were contacted and interviews conducted with 25 women. Each interviewee was asked about coping with normal life stressors, stressors associated with being married to a minister, and catastrophic life events. All interviews were transcribed and coded, using grounded theory. Participants emphasized the importance of spirituality, social support, limit-setting, and healthy lifestyle choices. Implications are discussed.

Misuse And Abuse Of Morse V. Frederick By Lower Courts: Sretching The High Court's Ruling Too Far To Censor Student Expression, Clay Calvert

Seattle University Law Review

This Article argues that the Fourth Amendment protects confidential attorney-client communications from unreasonable government intrusion, including unreasonable court orders compelling production of attorney-client communications. The Article begins by focusing on the elements of a claim under the Fourth Amendment. Part II identifies the elements and subsequent sections address each element in the context of attorney-client communications. Part III considers the legitimate expectation of privacy in confidential attorney-client communications. Part IV addresses the search and seizure requirement, explores authority distinguishing between "actual" and "constructive" searches, and concludes that, in addition to searches, court-ordered production of attorney-client communications (a "constructive" search and …

Ambivalence About Social Welfare : An Evaluation Of Measurement Approaches., Jason Gainous Jan 2008

Ambivalence About Social Welfare : An Evaluation Of Measurement Approaches., Jason Gainous

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Research across disciplines, including political science, has embraced the idea that individuals often possess ambivalent attitudes, but there is considerable disagreement about how to measure ambivalence. Determining an effective way of capturing such phenomena is important to our understanding of politics and public opinion. The literature offers several meta-attitudinal and operative measures of ambivalence. I discuss strengths and weaknesses of each of these approaches and conduct a test of the relative construct validity of two meta-attitudinal and two operative measures of social welfare ambivalence using data from a statewide survey of Florida residents in 2004. The findings suggest that one …

Who Should Own The Air?: A Closer Look At Smoking Bans, Stacy Mcmullen Jan 2008

Who Should Own The Air?: A Closer Look At Smoking Bans, Stacy Mcmullen

Honors Program Theses

Smoking bans result from public health concerns. There are well over 70,000 articles in peer-reviewed journals that link smoking with various health problems [Chaloupka et al. 2004-2005, 2]. There are also a number of states currently debating statewide bans. Are statewide smoking bans the answer to the tobacco problem or are they simply an example of excessive paternalism? The purpose of this paper is to examine the two sides of the argument and determine whether policymakers should implement smoking bans. It will show that, in the end, nonsmokers should own the air, and smoking bans should be implemented to protect …

Biological Evaluations: Blood, Genes, And Family, Janet L. Dolgin Jan 2008

Biological Evaluations: Blood, Genes, And Family, Janet L. Dolgin

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

This article addresses a striking contrast at the center of contemporary social and legal views of family. The traditional family, forged in the early years of the Industrial Revolution to support the interests of the marketplace, has largely collapsed. In its place, the law and society have increasingly recognized the significance of autonomous individuality in the construction of family relationships. At the same time, however, society has become obsessed with the apparent significance of DNA in determining individual and familial identity.

As options for creating and defining families have multiplied, society and the law have struggled to construct a variety …

The Winding Road From Form To Function: A Brief History Of Contemporary Marriage, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern Jan 2008

The Winding Road From Form To Function: A Brief History Of Contemporary Marriage, J. Herbie Difonzo, Ruth C. Stern

Hofstra Law Faculty Scholarship

Consider this contrast: American marriage was once “rigid, work-centered, custom regulated, with well-defined roles for husband, wife, and children,” but now may be characterized as “flexible, pleasure-centered, cooperatively regulated, with loosely defined roles for husband, wife, and children.” The accuracy of this comparison between conjugal unions past and present may be debated, although on the whole the distinction it draws seems defensible. What might startle the reader, however, is that quoted contrast appeared in a 1955 college sociology text entitled “Making the Most of Marriage.” The author, noted sociologist Paul H. Landis, celebrated the pliable, fun-loving marriage of his time …

Anything for love;
I would do anything for love;
I would do anything for love;
But I won't do that;
I won't do that.

When Meat Loaf mystified scores of listeners in the early nineties by his logically inconsistent song lyrics, he almost certainly did not look to property law when answering his fans most popular question. This Essay does not argue that he should have. However, Meat Loaf's (in)famous song lyrics may be able to shed light on what has become a popular question among property fans, namely what is the nature of the right to exclude.

This Essay …

The Importance Of "Focusness": Focus Groups As A Means Of Collection Management Assessment, Barbara J. Strauss, Fran Mentch, Carol Zsulya

Michael Schwartz Library Publications

In order to assess the Library's collection, the Collection Development Assessment Team at Cleveland State University used focus groups to complement the information gathered in LibQUAL+™. Groups of undergraduates, graduates, and faculty participated in four separate focus groups. All groups reported they were essentially satisfied with the collection but also wanted better local collections and used OhioLINK to supplement their research; fewer users also utilized the rich resources of the public library systems. In keeping with previous surveys, all groups wanted more full-text available electronically, faster access to materials, and a more navigable website. It appeared that the more sophisticated …
