Can Normal Habits Affect Gpa?, Jessica Hildebrand, Regina Thurman Nov 2008

Can Normal Habits Affect Gpa?, Jessica Hildebrand, Regina Thurman

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

We wanted to see if there was a correlation between sleep and/or caffeine and students’ grade point average (GPA). To do this we surveyed 101 Lindenwood undergraduate students. We asked them how much caffeine they consumed in a day, how much sleep they get within a seven day period, and their GPA, as well as basic demographic questions. Our study found that there was a weak negative relationship between sleep and GPA whereas no relationship between caffeine consumption and GPA. We conclude that since no relationship has been found, we have made suggestions on how to investigate further given some …

Voices Of Hope, Mildred M. Pearson Dr. Nov 2008

Voices Of Hope, Mildred M. Pearson Dr.

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Using the self-efficacy literature as a theoretical framework, this article discusses the reality of academic achievement and academic performance among selected African American middle school girls. Both quantitative and qualitative research approaches are used to investigate the influence of selfefficacy. Thirty-seven African American middle school girls filled out an adversity questionnaire and also responded to the Children’s Self-efficacy Survey. Based on the results, 10 girls were selected for in-depth interviews. Responses to interview questions reveal how these girls’ self-efficacy helped them not only cope with obstacles in their lives but also excel academically. These responses provide important insights for educators …

Multi-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis For Testing Measurement Invariance In Mixed Item Format Data, Kim H. Koh, Bruno D. Zumbo Nov 2008

Multi-Group Confirmatory Factor Analysis For Testing Measurement Invariance In Mixed Item Format Data, Kim H. Koh, Bruno D. Zumbo

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

This simulation study investigated the empirical Type I error rates of using the maximum likelihood estimation method and Pearson covariance matrix for multi-group confirmatory factor analysis (MGCFA) of full and strong measurement invariance hypotheses with mixed item format data that are ordinal in nature. The results indicate that mixed item formats and sample size combinations do not result in inflated empirical Type I error rates for rejecting the true measurement invariance hypotheses. Therefore, although the common methods are in a sense sub-optimal, they don’t lead to researchers claiming that measures are functioning differently across groups – i.e., a lack of …

Estimating Explanatory Power In A Simple Regression Model Via Smoothers, Rand R. Wilcox Nov 2008

Estimating Explanatory Power In A Simple Regression Model Via Smoothers, Rand R. Wilcox

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Consider the regression model Y = γ(X) + ε , where γ(X) is some conditional measure of location associated with Y , given X. Let Υ̂ be some estimate of Y, given X, and let τ2 (Y) be some measure of variation. Explanatory power is η2 = τ2 (Υ̂) /τ2(Y) . When γ(X) = β0 + β1X and τ2(Y) is the variance of Y , η2 = ρ2 , …

Least Squares Percentage Regression, Chris Tofallis Nov 2008

Least Squares Percentage Regression, Chris Tofallis

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

In prediction, the percentage error is often felt to be more meaningful than the absolute error. We therefore extend the method of least squares to deal with percentage errors, for both simple and multiple regression. Exact expressions are derived for the coefficients, and we show how such models can be estimated using standard software. When the relative error is normally distributed, least squares percentage regression is shown to provide maximum likelihood estimates. The multiplicative error model is linked to least squares percentage regression in the same way that the standard additive error model is linked to ordinary least squares regression.

A Randomization Method To Control The Type I Error Rates In Best Subset Regression, Yasser A. Shehata, Paul White Nov 2008

A Randomization Method To Control The Type I Error Rates In Best Subset Regression, Yasser A. Shehata, Paul White

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

A randomization method for the assessment of statistical significance for best subsets regression is given. The procedure takes into account the number of potential predictors and the inter-dependence between predictors. The approach corrects a non-trivial problem with Type I errors and can be used to assess individual variable significance.

Comparing Factor Loadings In Exploratory Factor Analysis: A New Randomization Test, W. Holmes Finch, Brian F. French Nov 2008

Comparing Factor Loadings In Exploratory Factor Analysis: A New Randomization Test, W. Holmes Finch, Brian F. French

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Factorial invariance testing requires a referent loading to be constrained equal across groups. This study introduces a randomization test for comparing group exploratory factor analysis loadings so as to identify an invariant referent. Results show that it maintains the Type I error rate while providing adequate power under most conditions.

An Examination Of The Contemporary Viability Of Moltmann's Personal And Cosmic Eschatology For Evangelical And Roman Catholic Theology, Chris Wiley Nov 2008

An Examination Of The Contemporary Viability Of Moltmann's Personal And Cosmic Eschatology For Evangelical And Roman Catholic Theology, Chris Wiley

Seminary Masters Theses

The following thesis will examine and critique Moltmann's personal and cosmic eschatology as compared and contrasted with the views of Joseph Ratzinger and Millard Erickson. These two theologians are chosen to represent critics from two schools of thought in response to Moltmann's theology of hope, namely those critical of his theological method and those critical of his political theology. This examination focuses on the viability of Moltmann's personal and cosmic eschatology in contemporary Evangelical and Catholic theology. This study begins with a review of Moltmann's methodology and general treatment of themes in his theology as they pertain to eschatology. This …

Overattribution Effect, Sally Eimer Nov 2008

Overattribution Effect, Sally Eimer

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of judgments undergraduate students made regarding a child’s behavior they observed in a brief video clip. Their attributions were expected to be affected by a key situational factor that only some were informed of. The researcher hypothesized that participants informed that the child, in the clip, was recently diagnosed with leukemia would attribute the child’s behavior to situational factors, whereas participants not given any information about the child in the clip, would attribute the child’s behavior to things intrinsic of the child.

To Travel Or To Compete? Motivations Of Masters Swimmers, Nancy M. Hritz, William D. Ramos Nov 2008

To Travel Or To Compete? Motivations Of Masters Swimmers, Nancy M. Hritz, William D. Ramos

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

The underlying motivations behind participating in sports event such as a swim meet are complex and varied especially for adult participants. These motivations may be related to the thrill of the competition, or the excitement of traveling to a new pool or aquatic facility. Investigation of motivations behind participation can enable aquatic facility managers to create memorable experiences that boost participation and encourage repeat visitors that have social and economic benefits for the aquatic facility and event. We motivations of Masters swimmers using the Participant Motivation Questionnaire (PMQ) modified for swimmers and the Travel Career Ladder (TCL) at the 2006 …

Queer Teens And Legislative Bullies: The Cruel And Invidious Discrimination Behind Heterosexist Statutory Rape Laws, Michael J. Higdon Nov 2008

Queer Teens And Legislative Bullies: The Cruel And Invidious Discrimination Behind Heterosexist Statutory Rape Laws, Michael J. Higdon

Scholarly Works

Most states make an exception to their statutory rape laws for sexual acts involving an adolescent victim, who is below the age of consent, when the defendant is close in age to the victim (i.e., generally no older than three or four years). However, a few states explicitly limit such exceptions (commonly referred to as Romeo and Juliet exceptions) to only those situations involving teens who are of the opposite gender. Thus, adolescents in these states who have sex with someone below the age of consent, and who are also the same gender as the defendant, cannot avail themselves to …

Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers Nov 2008

Implicit And Explicit Self-Esteem And Their Correlations With Codependency, Rachel N. Rogers

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The present study examined the correlations between implicit and explicit self-esteem and codependency. Implicit self-esteem involves automatic, over-learned self-evaluations and explicit self-esteem refers to conscious feelings of one’s self. It was predicted that participants who scored higher on the implicit self-esteem measure would score lower on the codependency scale, regardless of scores on the explicit self-esteem scale. Participants engaged in a timed task involving me/not-me primes and positive/negative words to measure implicit self-esteem. The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Spann-Fischer Codependency Scale were used to measure explicit self-esteem and codependency, respectively. Should a strong negative correlation be found between codependency …

Urban Vs. Rural Work Ethic, Lindsey D. Geeding Nov 2008

Urban Vs. Rural Work Ethic, Lindsey D. Geeding

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The present study was conducted in order to see if there were any differences in work ethic between urban and rural areas in the St. Louis, Metropolitan area. The subjects were recruited from the Lindenwood University faculty and students. The subjects were given a questionnaire created by the researcher, and a survey created by Mirles and Garrett (1997). As the results showed, there were not enough participants gathered to show significance. However, the results did show that students seem to have a stronger work ethic than faculty.

Resisting And Transforming: Pastoral Theology And Care Of Korean Military Wives, Bocheol Chang Nov 2008

Resisting And Transforming: Pastoral Theology And Care Of Korean Military Wives, Bocheol Chang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Korean military wives have been symbolized as "dirty," "nothing," and "evil" by Koreans, Korean Americans, and their American families. They also experience same level of oppression and discrimination within Korean American congregations. In Korea, the women suffered poverty, sexual violence, and Confucian gender discrimination. They have also experienced racial and sexual oppression, intercultural familial conflicts and violence, and identity crisis in America. All of those experiences are caused the sense of not belonging of Korean military wives.

The sense of not belonging and desperation can be explained well by Andrew Sung Park's theology of han. The theology of han …

The Curricular And Instructional Implication For The Tacit Knowledge Exhibited While Creating A Forensic Craniofacial Reconstruction, Daniel Marion, Jr. Nov 2008

The Curricular And Instructional Implication For The Tacit Knowledge Exhibited While Creating A Forensic Craniofacial Reconstruction, Daniel Marion, Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In our teaching careers, K-12 classroom teachers come to know that the way a given student connects the dots to comprehend a concept, lesson, or subject is not always (and most likely never is) in a straight linear fashion. The connections between the dots are defined as the student’s personalized understanding (tacit knowledge/knowing) of concepts, lessons, and/or subjects. The student most likely did not perceive, process, and/or retain the concept, lesson, or subject in the manner it was taught to her or him. Teachers asking a student to explain how he or she arrived at an answer or knew the …

An Inquiry Into The Metaphysical Foundations Of Mathematics In Economics, Edgar Luna Nov 2008

An Inquiry Into The Metaphysical Foundations Of Mathematics In Economics, Edgar Luna

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Economics is supposed to fall somewhere between a hard science and a social science. During the last half century, economics has become highly mathematical trying to mimic physics. The purpose of this study is to look at the metaphysical statements linked to mathematical models, specifically, Game Theory. In doing so, it will be demonstrated that Game Theory, as part of neoclassical economics, engages in analysis which can be categorized as metaphysical, with real metaphysical implications. In categorizing the metaphysical assumptions of neoclassical economists/game theorists we will see how much of their analysis is consists in a reductive, implausible metaphysical view. …

Role Of Perceived Partner Responsiveness On Mexican American Males' Pain Severity And Depressive Symptomatology, Carolyn M. Freedman Nov 2008

Role Of Perceived Partner Responsiveness On Mexican American Males' Pain Severity And Depressive Symptomatology, Carolyn M. Freedman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the role of cultural indicators in moderating the influence of perceived partner responses and relationship satisfaction on pain severity and depressive symptomatology among a sample of 62 married and cohabiting Mexican American men, the majority of whom were first generation Mexican Americans, with chronic back and/or neck pain. The cultural indicators were not found to act as moderators in the analyses that involved pain severity and depressive symptomatology as outcome variables. Nevertheless, this study's findings are an important initial step in understanding the relationship dynamics among an understudied population with chronic pain and raise many important questions …

Effects Of Plain Language Revision On Item Difficulty, Discrimination And Dif, Holly E. Baker Nov 2008

Effects Of Plain Language Revision On Item Difficulty, Discrimination And Dif, Holly E. Baker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colorado assesses approximately 98% of students enrolled in grades 3-10 in the area of mathematics. In 2005, 69,872 English Language Learners (ELLs) in grades 3-10 participated in the state content area assessments. In 2007, 88,060 ELLs participated in the state content area assessments. With this dramatic growth in the ELL population in the state of Colorado and elsewhere in the nation, ensuring that ELLs have access to comprehensible materials on state assessments is of paramount importance. Accommodations provide access for students based on their individual needs. Likewise, assessment items designed and/or revised using the principles of plain language and universal …

Is Bigger Better Or Is Less More? : American Compared To Non-American Consumption Habits, Amanda Bratcher, Sofia Aneas, Jesus Lopez

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

The purpose of this experiment was to determine if American participants compared to non-Americans participants would choose a bigger consumable item regardless of its cost when asked to choose between a smaller and larger item. Participants were shown a series of items that consisted of five pairings of two different-sized consumable items and asked to state their preference after each set of items was presented. This process was administered one time with pricing information of the items made known to the participants and one time without pricing information, counterbalancing of pricing information was utilized. The results concluded that price did …

Red Bull Marketing Techniques, Jennifer Hogenmiller, Kailey Steuber Nov 2008

Red Bull Marketing Techniques, Jennifer Hogenmiller, Kailey Steuber

The differences in marketing techniques using the product Red Bull Energy Drink was investigated in this research project. Three techniques were used: the participant was read aloud information, the participant read information from a pamphlet, and the participant was shown a power point presentation. These techniques were tested to discover whether the marketing technique influenced the consumer purchase of the product. 64 participants were tested, but only 31 participants’ data was used. Many participants’ data had to be excluded due to factors of affiliation and missing data. After conducting a one-way ANOVA, we did find statistical significance between the presentation …

Gender Strength Implications And Its Effects On Task Performance, Chelsea Schumacher Nov 2008

Gender Strength Implications And Its Effects On Task Performance, Chelsea Schumacher

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

Throughout the history of research, there has been an immense interest regarding gender differences. Not only have variations in gender been observed through various social and physiological factors, but through cognitive factors as well. When reviewing previous research studies, it is evident that gender variations exist even when performing simple memory tasks. In the present study, the experimenter investigated whether implying opposing gender strength would have an effect on recall test performance. It was hypothesized that an individual would be motivated to perform more accurately on a recall test when opposing gender strength implications were introduced. When analyzing the results …
