Personnel Selection, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens Jan 2008

Personnel Selection, Paul R. Sackett, Filip Lievens

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We review developments in personnel selection since the previous review by Hough & Oswald (2000) in the Annual Review of Psycholog. We organize the review around a taxonomic structure of possible bases for improved selection, which includes (a) better understanding of the criterion domain and criterion measurement, (b) improved measurement of existing predictor methods or constructs, (c) identification and measurement of new predictor methods or constructs, (d) improved identification of features that moderate or mediate predictor-criterion relationships, (e) clearer understanding of the relationship between predictors or between predictors and criteria (e.g., via meta-analytic synthesis), (f) identification and prediction of new …

Comparing The Effects Of Sung Versus Spoken Lyrics On Speech And Language Acquisition In Late-Talking Toddlers, Chelsea Ki Sook Clock Bell Jan 2008

Comparing The Effects Of Sung Versus Spoken Lyrics On Speech And Language Acquisition In Late-Talking Toddlers, Chelsea Ki Sook Clock Bell

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of two intervention approaches with children who are delayed in their development of expressive language (i.e. "late talkers"). Identification and intervention for late talkers is often controversial. This study examined whether music therapy has an equal or greater effect on speech and language acquisition in two toddlers with late-developing speech and expressive language when compared to a literacy-based intervention involving storybook reading. The use of storybook reading in speech and language therapy has been examined and found successful when used with children with communication disorders. However additional research is needed …

Aging Effects On The Transcription Of Differentially Impaired Dysarthric Speech, Molly Anne Duggan Jan 2008

Aging Effects On The Transcription Of Differentially Impaired Dysarthric Speech, Molly Anne Duggan

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Thirty participants transcribed 60 words and 30 sentences spoken by persons with dysarthria. Participants, all aged 65 and older were divided into three age groups: Young-Old, Middle-Old, and Old-Old. Each group was comprised of 10 participants. Stimuli were recorded by two male speakers with differing severity levels of dysarthria. Results suggested age did affect the transcription scores, as the Young-Old participants were able to transcribe words and sentences with greater accuracy than the Old-Old participants. The severity of the dysarthric speaker also affected the accuracy of participants in transcribing their words and sentences. Utterances produced by the speaker with mild …

Model-Centered Instruction, The Design, And The Designer, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii Jan 2008

Model-Centered Instruction, The Design, And The Designer, Andrew S. Gibbons Iii

Faculty Publications

A model of instruction described by Wenger (1987) identifies three elements that are active during instruction: the mental model the instructor wishes to share with the learner, the external experience used to communicate the mental model, and the evolving mental model of the learner. Gibbons (2003a), writing in response to Seel (2003), noted this three-part description as a bridge concept relating learning and instruction. This view has important practical implications for designers of instruction. For example, Gibbons and Rogers (in press) propose that there exists a natural layered architecture within instructional designs that corresponds with instructional functions. Among these layers …

Does Motor Skill Level Affect Physical Activity-Related Self-Efficacy And Enjoyment In Third Grade Students?, Rachel Kautzky-Braley Jan 2008

Does Motor Skill Level Affect Physical Activity-Related Self-Efficacy And Enjoyment In Third Grade Students?, Rachel Kautzky-Braley

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Childhood obesity has nearly tripled in the past three decades. Because of these alarming numbers, government health officials are highly concerned with causes of this trend. It has been shown that poor diet, certain behaviors such as television viewing, and a lack of physical activity are some of the causes of this increase. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between self-efficacy and enjoyment and a child's motor skill level. The study participants included 80 third grade students (43 girls and 37 boys). The sample was split into an intervention group (n=43) and a control group (n=37). …

The Effects Of Parental Involvement On Early Reading Acquisition Among Kindergarten Students, Erin Vander Velde Jan 2008

The Effects Of Parental Involvement On Early Reading Acquisition Among Kindergarten Students, Erin Vander Velde

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Children begin to develop literacy skills long before they enter formal education. It has been found that parental involvement in the early literacy process through both formal and informal activities at home can help to improve a child's reading abilities, even when risk factors are present. Providing skills to parents may help them to bolster their child's reading acquisition. This study sought to determine the impact of parental on the reading skills of kindergarten students, as measured by the Dynamic Indicators of Parents of three students receiving Title I services in reading attended a reading seminar. Children of parents attending …

Social And Cultural Diversity In Distance Education, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Deborah Lapointe Jan 2008

Social And Cultural Diversity In Distance Education, Charlotte Nirmalani Gunawardena, Deborah Lapointe

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

With the expansion of global telecommunication networks and the worldwide demand for higher education, distance education has the potential to reach out internationally to enhance learning for diverse learners and increase intercultural awareness and communication. By definition, distance education is borderless (Latchem, 2005), although differences in sociocultural contexts, values and expectations of diverse educational systems and learners may prove to be its greatest challenge (Hanna, 2000). While distance education programs proclaim an international focus with international content and learners, instructional design and methods frequently carry Eurocentric Western bias. Distance educators need to be sensitive to social, cultural and educational differences, …

Family Court Reform And Adr: Shifting Values And Expectations Transform The Divorce Process, Nancy Ver Steegh Jan 2008

Family Court Reform And Adr: Shifting Values And Expectations Transform The Divorce Process, Nancy Ver Steegh

Faculty Scholarship

During the last fifty years, the process of divorce has undergone a remarkable transformation. This article examines the sweeping breadth of the change and the underlying societal forces behind it. As the family court landscape has changed, a ripple effect has occurred necessitating reconsideration of the roles that lawyers and judges play in the divorce process. Although lack of judicial resources has fueled some of the change, deep funding cuts foreshadow a less positive transformation, one potentially resulting in a two-tiered system of justice for families.

Some Issues In Psychiatry, Psychology, And The Law, Renee L. Binder, Dale E. Mcniel Jan 2008

Some Issues In Psychiatry, Psychology, And The Law, Renee L. Binder, Dale E. Mcniel

UC Law Journal

This article reviews some issues in psychiatry, psychology, and the law with the goal of increasing understanding across disciplines. We compare how concepts such as certainty, probability, reliability, and validity are used across disciplines; e.g., psychiatrists and psychologists tend to think in terms of probabilities, whereas the legal system often prefers certainty because the resolution of disputes requires making absolute decisions such as whether a defendant is guilty or not. We describe special ethical issues that are associated with providing forensic mental health evaluations in contrast to providing treatment; e.g., compared to the treatment situation, confidentiality typically is much more …

Family Responsibilities Discrimination And The New Institutionalism: The Interactive Process Through Which Legal And Social Factors Produce Institutional Change, Marcy C. Still Jan 2008

Family Responsibilities Discrimination And The New Institutionalism: The Interactive Process Through Which Legal And Social Factors Produce Institutional Change, Marcy C. Still

UC Law Journal

The recent formal adoption of both the logic and language of legal and work/family activists by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) legitimized the issue of workplace discrimination against employees with family caregiving responsibilities and conferred credibility crucial for triggering social change. In this Article, the Author examines the social and legal process leading to such an important action on the part of the U.S. government by identifying key change agents involved: legal intellectuals, the media, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, work/life activists, and hybrid political organizations. The Author then draws from new institutionalist theory to consider whether substantive …

Power Laws, Discontinuities And Regional City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Colin M. Gallagher Jan 2008

Power Laws, Discontinuities And Regional City Size Distributions, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Colin M. Gallagher

Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit: Staff Publications

Urban systems are manifestations of human adaptation to the natural environment. City size distributions are the expression of hierarchical processes acting upon urban systems. In this paper, we test the entire city size distributions for the southeastern and southwestern United States (1990), as well as the size classes in these regions for power law behavior. We interpret the differences in the size of the regional city size distributions as the manifestation of variable growth dynamics dependent upon city size. Size classes in the city size distributions are snapshots of stable states within urban systems in flux.

The Additive Value Of Positive Psychological Capital In Predicting Work Attitudes And Behaviors, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Carolyn M. Youssef Jan 2008

The Additive Value Of Positive Psychological Capital In Predicting Work Attitudes And Behaviors, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Carolyn M. Youssef

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom over the years and recent research findings have supported the importance of positivity in the workplace. However, to date, empirical analysis has not demonstrated potential added value of recently emerging positive state-like constructs such as psychological capital over the more established positive traits in predicting work attitudes and behaviors. This study of a sample of employees (N=336) from a broad cross section of organizations and jobs found that their state-like psychological capital is positively related to desired extra-role organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) and negatively with undesired organizational cynicism, intentions to quit and counterproductive workplace behaviors. Except for individual …

A Call For Longitudinal Research In Positive Organizational Behavior, James B. Avey, Fred Luthans, Ketan H. Mhatre

Leadership Institute: Faculty Publications

After defining and providing the current status of psychological capital (PsyCap), we address the need to better understand its stability (i.e., state vs. trait). Specifically, we issue a call for longitudinal research. The balance of this ‘‘incubator’’ article examines the relevance, potential obstacles, and advantages of this design in meeting PsyCap’s future research needs.

Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences

Background: Eating in the absence of hunger (EAH), studied in the context of laboratory paradigms, has been associated with obesity and is predictive of excess weight gain in children. However, no easily administered questionnaire exists to assess for EAH in children.
Objective: We developed an Eating in the Absence of Hunger Questionnaire to be administered to children and adolescents (EAH-C) and examined psychometric properties of the measure.
Design: Two-hundred and twenty-six obese (BMI ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex, n = 73) and non-obese (BMI < 95th percentile, n = 153) youth (mean age ± S.D., 14.4 ± 2.5 y) completed the …

Soft Or Modern? Delineating Curtains In Domestic Interiors Of Modern Architecture, Açalya Allmer Jan 2008

Soft Or Modern? Delineating Curtains In Domestic Interiors Of Modern Architecture, Açalya Allmer

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

“My windows hung with lace curtains (Valenciennes, Venice, Bruges, Scotland) combined according to the formula:  =  m (m - 1) (m - 2) … (m – n + 1).”  These are the words of Bourgeois, the fictive character in Le Corbusier’s seminal book The Decorative Art of Today (1925). Le Corbusier’s witty attack on curtains was common in the dominant rhetoric of modern architecture in which drapes and curtains were regarded as superficial, fleeting, and effeminate. This paper deals with curtains in domestic interiors, exploring the correlation that exists between the representation and function of the drapery in modern architecture: …

Textiles, Masculinities And Spontaneous Communities In The Burning Man Project, Susan Kaiser, Denise Nicole Green Jan 2008

Textiles, Masculinities And Spontaneous Communities In The Burning Man Project, Susan Kaiser, Denise Nicole Green

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

For one week of the year nearly 50,000 individuals make the pilgrimage to the desolate Black Rock Desert in Northwestern Nevada to participate in the creation of culture. As an experiment in ephemeral Bohemia, the Burning Man Project (BMP) provides a space for unbridled creative expression. This festal gathering seeks to replace commodified with communified material culture. The latter works to move beyond the capitalist “disconnect” between production and consumption, toward a model that bridges the two.

The BMP is a work in progress, with a reflexive awareness of the challenges involved in integrating collective participation and a gift economy …

People, Place, Spirit, Denise Ava Robinson Jan 2008

People, Place, Spirit, Denise Ava Robinson

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

People, Land, Spirit is about the deep engagement I have for my homeland, Tasmania. It is about the relationship between people, place and spirit.

Indigenous people live in harmony with the land – their very existence in accordance with rhythms of nature.  Many cultures have over time been tattered, scattered or shattered through colonisation, the Tasmanian aboriginal culture being one of them.

Tattered cultures arouse the desire for the retracing of histories, cultural practices and traditions, many of which form the basis of contemporary practices today.  These processes bring deeper understanding and awareness: new cultural practices emerge, and the cycles …
