Resistance To It Change In The Aec Industry: An Individual Assessment Tool, Kirsten Davis, Anthony D. Songer Mar 2008

Resistance To It Change In The Aec Industry: An Individual Assessment Tool, Kirsten Davis, Anthony D. Songer

Construction Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Numerous IT adoption studies within the AEC industry identify issues with individuals resisting IT changes. Current change models often only look at organizations and tasks and frequently neglect the individuals involved. The limitations in existing change models and the criticality of people issues in the successful implementation of change necessitates the investigation of individual resistance to IT change.

Change management theory and attitude-behavior connections provide a framework to study variables associated with impeding/promoting the use of technologies. Data collected from a 50-person sample of the AEC population allowed reductions of the attitudes, fears, and beliefs variables. Reducing the variables indicative …

Social Work In The Workfare Regime: A Comparison Of The U.S. And Australia, Catherine Mcdonald, Michael Reisch Mar 2008

Social Work In The Workfare Regime: A Comparison Of The U.S. And Australia, Catherine Mcdonald, Michael Reisch

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Australia and the U.S. are both liberal welfare states. During the past quarter century, they have begun the transition from a welfare to a workfare state, albeit at different rates and through different paths. Social work developed in each country in ways congruent with the local liberal welfare state, and as such, has been destabilized by the transition to the workfare regime. Drawing on neo-institutional theory and extant empirical research in other professionalized fields, the paper suggests that this transition can be understood as an aspect of institutional change. By comparing the developments in two similar, yet difterent nations, this …

The Impact Of Organizational Goal Setting On The Industrial Munificence-Goal Attainment Relationship, Zhi Tang, Benjamin Powell, Louis Marino, Jintong Tang, Pat Dickson

Presentations and other scholarship

In seeking to exploit environmental resources and opportunities, CEOs can either set multiple goals or narrow their focus on a few targets for the organizations. What approach will help organizations to benefit more from industrial munificence? In this paper, we investigate the moderating effects of CEOs’ goal setting (including the number of goals and the prioritization of these goals) on the relationship between industrial munificence and the satisfaction of goal attainment. By examining 277 small and medium-size firms in four countries, we find that CEOs need to stretch their goal list while keeping a clear priority order among these goals …

Ideology, Strategy And Conflict In A Social Movement Organization: The Sierra Club Immigration Wars, Leslie King Mar 2008

Ideology, Strategy And Conflict In A Social Movement Organization: The Sierra Club Immigration Wars, Leslie King

Sociology: Faculty Publications

What cultural and structural factors allow conflict in a social movement organization to persist over long periods of time? Using data gleaned from interviews, archival materials, newspaper articles and online sources, I examine the Sierra Club's conflict over immigration policy, an issue which has persisted for decades without clear resolution. I argue that ideology accounts for some activists ' position on club policy, while others based their stance on strategic concerns, which were linked in part to forces external to the club. At the same time, the democratic structure of the Sierra Club has allowed factions to continue working towards …

The Strength Of 'Dispersed' Ties: An Examination In Persistence Of Social Capital Following Organizational Disbanding, R. Drew Sellers Mar 2008

The Strength Of 'Dispersed' Ties: An Examination In Persistence Of Social Capital Following Organizational Disbanding, R. Drew Sellers

Student Scholarship

This study examines social capital persistence following organizational disbanding. It utilizes data collected from a cohort of Arthur Andersen professionals employed in the same U.S. regional office of the firm prior to the 2001 Enron scandal. As predicted by extant research, results support the influence of bonding and utilization relationships. Interestingly, predicted support for bridging relationships was absent. The study also finds that individuals who were dispersed from their original cohort stood to gain more from their social capital, compared to their counterparts who were rehired by competitors with the same cohort after disbanding.

"We Can Do It!": How Clarity Interacts With Collective Efficacy In Organizational Change, Jonathan Coleman Mar 2008

"We Can Do It!": How Clarity Interacts With Collective Efficacy In Organizational Change, Jonathan Coleman

Student Scholarship

Organizations are challenged to adapt to changing conditions on a frequent basis. Leaders of these organizations communicate two critical ideas: clearly defining goals and generating the collective efficacy that those goals can be achieved. This study aims to explore the interrelationships between: (1) how communication develops path-goal clarity and collective efficacy, and (2) how clarity and efficacy interact to lead to the achievement of a performance objective. This paper captures results from a Fortune 100 company undergoing massive transformational change. The findings indicate that collective efficacy has a much stronger relationship to performance than path-goal clarity. For line workers, this …

Can Positive Employees Help Positive Organizational Change? Impact Of Psychological Capital And Emotions On Relevant Attitudes And Behaviors, James Avey, Tara S. Wernsing, Fred Luthans

Department of Management: Faculty Publications

Although much attention has been devoted to understanding employee resistance to change, relatively little research examines the impact that positive employees can have on organizational change. To help fill this need, the authors investigate whether a process of employees’ positivity will have an impact on relevant attitudes and behaviors. Specifically, this study surveyed 132 employees from a broad cross-section of organizations and jobs and found: (a) Their psychological capital (a core factor consisting of hope, efficacy, optimism, and resilience) was related to their positive emotions that in turn were related to their attitudes (engagement and cynicism) and behaviors (organizational citizenship …

Publications

Simulation-based training can improve patient care when factors influencing its design, delivery, evaluation, and transfer are taken into consideration. In this paper, we provide a number of principles and practical tips that organizations in health care can use to begin implementing effective simulation-based training as a way to enhance patient safety. We commend the health care community for their efforts thus far. We hope that the information provided in this paper will encourage thinking beyond the "bells and whistles" of the simulation and bring to light full potential of simulation-based training in health care and patient safety.

On The Convergence Of Innis's International Political Economy And Sebald's Novels, Joseph S. Pinter

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his paper "On the Convergence of Innis's International Political Economy and Sebald's Novels" Joseph S. Pinter contributes to the development of an area of scholarship on Harold A. Innis and Canadian political economy which deals with issues of representation, landscape, and memory. Pinter draws attention to a specific aspect of Innis's approach to political economy and focuses on ways in which Innis was able to represent fundamental aspects of the settlement process in Canada. Pinter argues that Innis focussed on landscape as a basic element in the European experience of North America (US and Canada) that, in turn, enabled …

ECSS is the world’s largest enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation and will completely transform USAF logistics operations. The benefits of an ERP include centrally-managed and integrated information sharing, while the many challenges include training future state operations and employing change management. An effective governance structure is essential in order for the USAF to realize the full benefits of …

How A Multidimensional View Of Perceived Organizational Support Impacts Self-Efficacy And Task Understanding During Training For Boundary Spanning Tasks, R. Scott Wallace Mar 2008

How A Multidimensional View Of Perceived Organizational Support Impacts Self-Efficacy And Task Understanding During Training For Boundary Spanning Tasks, R. Scott Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Perceived organizational support (POS), defined as how much employees feel the organization they work for cares for them and assists them in their needs, has been traditionally characterized in a single dimension. This study examines the implications of a multidimensional view of POS. POS was separated into three different dimensions based on the organizational level from which support can be viewed to originate: corporate headquarters, the home office, or the training environment. These dimensions of POS were tested to discover their effect on the self-efficacy and task understanding of individuals training for boundary-spanning tasks. These tasks are those that place …

Progressive Lawyering In Politically Depressing Times: Can New Models For Institutional Self-Reform Achieve More Effective Structural Change?, Susan D. Carle

Working Papers

This Essay examines both the promise and the drawbacks of new models of achieving institutional self-reform through voluntary, self-designed processes, such as those undertaken in a case study Susan Sturm presents of the National Science Foundation's (NSF's) ADVANCE initiative, a program designed to encourage universities to make progress in eliminating the severe under-representation of women in academic positions in the sciences.

The promise of such models is multi-faceted. Most important, they offer paths for bringing about institutional reform without extensive management from legislatures or courts. They bring together affected interests to find win-win solutions. Law supports the achievement of consensus …

Improving The Reputation Of Cooperative Extension As A Source Of Prevention Education For Youth And Families: The Effects Of The Prosper Model, Claudia Mincemoyer, Daniel Perkins, Patrica Mei-Mei Ang, Mark T. Greenberg Feb 2008

Improving The Reputation Of Cooperative Extension As A Source Of Prevention Education For Youth And Families: The Effects Of The Prosper Model, Claudia Mincemoyer, Daniel Perkins, Patrica Mei-Mei Ang, Mark T. Greenberg

Journal of Extension

Has the reputation of the Cooperative Extension Service (CES) changed over time as a result of its involvement in PROSPER, a community-based partnership designed to provide evidence-based prevention education programs? With deficits facing federal and state governments, budget cuts continue to threaten the viability and growth of CES. Moreover, changing legislative priorities make it easy for CES youth and family programs to be forgotten by policy makers. Thus, increasing the positive reputation of CES as an important and effective force in making the lives of youth and families better is essential for growing CES's stakeholder advocate base.
