Ten Years Of Community Profiles In New Hampshire, Charlie A. French, Fabienne Lord-Fonesca Aug 2008

Ten Years Of Community Profiles In New Hampshire, Charlie A. French, Fabienne Lord-Fonesca

Natural Resources & the Environment

Through a program called Community Profiles, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension has helped 57 New Hampshire communities develop a vision for their future and mobilize local residents to act on that vision. The Community Profile process is based on the premise that communities must engage members in identifying and documenting common and deeply held values from which to craft a vision for the future if they are to build and sustain community vitality. The process also helps communities find new and creative ways to pursue that vision by leveraging resources within and outside of the community. These resources …

Swimming And All-Cause Mortality Risk Compared With Running, Walking, And Sedentary Habits In Men, Nancy L. Chase, Xuemei Sui, Steven N. Blair Aug 2008

Swimming And All-Cause Mortality Risk Compared With Running, Walking, And Sedentary Habits In Men, Nancy L. Chase, Xuemei Sui, Steven N. Blair

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Swimming, water jogging, and aqua aerobics are lifetime physical activities that provide many health benefits comparable to those of walking and running. Research on the association between swimming and mortality is scarce, however. To evaluate the association between different types of physical activity and all-cause mortality, we studied 40,547 men age 20-90 years who completed a health examination during 1971 – 2003. Cox proportional-hazards regression was used to estimate the relative risks according to physical activity exposure categories. A total of 3,386 deaths occurred during 543,330 man-years of observation. After adjustment for age, body-mass index, smoking status, alcohol intake, and …

Fifth Grader's Weight Status Perceptions, Alice Parker Hannifin Aug 2008

Fifth Grader's Weight Status Perceptions, Alice Parker Hannifin

Graduate Research Projects

Childhood obesity is rising and children's perceptions of their weight status may be influential. This study analyzed the responses of 18 fifth grade students regarding their perception of their weight status. The participants included 12 girls and 6 boys obtained from a convenience sample at a rural elementary school. A positive correlation between weight perception and BMI was demonstrated(r= .804, p< 0.01), although some misperceptions were evident. The majority of students worried about their weight even if they were at a healthy weight. Overweight children responded that healthcare providers and parents are not talking to them about their weight. Participants recognized that diet and exercise are the main reasons for overweight in children. Health implications of life-long obesity are significant. This small study showed, as other studies, that problems in weight perception are evident at the 5th grade level.

Homeless Women With Children In Shelters: The Institutionalization Of Family Life, Kathryn Feltey, Laura Nichols

Sociology

In this chapter, we examine the shelter experience for homeless mothers, particularly those with young children. We review the literature on women with children living in homeless shelters and draw from the findings of our research on homeless women living in shelters and transitional housing in the midwestern United States from 1990 through 2002. This research included in-depth interviews conducted over a twelve-year period with almost 200 women residing in emergency homeless shelters, battered women's shelters, or transitional housing for single-parent families. For this chapter, we draw from the data on sheltered homeless mothers living with or separated from their …

Measuring The Progressive Realization Of Human Rights Obligations: An Index Of Economic And Social Rights Fulfillment, Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, Terra Lawson-Remer, Susan Randolph Aug 2008

Measuring The Progressive Realization Of Human Rights Obligations: An Index Of Economic And Social Rights Fulfillment, Sakiko Fukuda-Parr, Terra Lawson-Remer, Susan Randolph

Economics Working Papers

In response to an increasing demand for rigorous monitoring of state accountability in meeting their human rights obligations, a growing literature on human rights measurement has emerged. Yet there are no widely used indicators or indices of human rights obligations fulfillment. This paper proposes a methodology for an index of economic and social rights fulfillment that: uses available survey-based objective, rather than subjective data; focuses on state obligations rather than solely on individual enjoyment of rights; and captures progressive realization of human rights subject to maximum available resources. Two calculation methods are proposed: the ratio approach and the achievement possibilities …

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of acute glutamine supplementation on maximal performance and recovery from high-intensity exercise. In a placebo-controlled, crossover study, seven (six males and one female) healthy subjects performed maximal treadmill exercise one-hour after the ingestion of 0.03 g·kg body mass -1 glutamine mixed with caffeine-free fruit juice or placebo. Expired gases, respiratory exchange ratios (RER), heart rate (HR), ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) and blood samples were collected pre-, during, and post-exercise. In addition, urine and saliva samples were obtained pre- and post-exercise. No significant differences in oxygen consumption, CO 2 production, …

A Spatial Analysis Of Anthropogenically Derived And Naturally Occurring Environmental Controls On Corn-Based Ethanol Production In Nebraska, Nathan Charles Healey Aug 2008

A Spatial Analysis Of Anthropogenically Derived And Naturally Occurring Environmental Controls On Corn-Based Ethanol Production In Nebraska, Nathan Charles Healey

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Transportation fuels are an integral part of political, economic, social, and environmental arenas. Traditionally, fossil fuels have been utilized most heavily due to their abundance and economic value. Currently, social and political concerns about harmful emissions (greenhouse gases) from fossil fuel combustion have enhanced interest in alternative fuels that do not have the same environmental consequence. Numerous alternative fuels are produced globally including methanol, biodiesel, hydrogen cells, and ethanol (ethyl alcohol). In America, ethanol is produced from com due to the existence of the "Com Belt" and abundant corn production. Understanding the capacity for America to sustain expansion of alternative …

Distribution And Abundance Of Prosapia (Homoptera: Cercopidae) In Monteverde-Area Farms, August 2008, Ryan Brower

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Prosapia spp. commonly known as spittle bugs, froghoppers, or “la Prosapia”, are pasture pests for dairy farmers in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica. The adults eat pasture grass, disturb plant growth, as well as reduce nutritional and palatability values of the pasture grass for dairy cattle, and are responsible “froghopper burn”. This study examined the relationship between altitude and Prosapia abundance in cattle pastures of farms surrounding Monteverde in Costa Rica. It was hypothesized that abundance will differ with altitude. A total of 11 farms in the Monteverde region of Costa Rica ranging from 825 m to 1510 m …
