Alma-Ata: Rebirth And Revision 8 - Primary Health Care: Making Alma-Ata A Reality, John Walley, Joy E. Lawn, Anne Tinker, Andres De Francisco, Mickey Chopra, Igor Rudan, Zulfiqar Ahmed Bhutta, Robert E. Black
Department of Paediatrics and Child Health
The principles agreed at Alma-Ata 30 years ago apply just as much now as they did then. "Health for all" by the year 2000 was not achieved, and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for 2015 will not be met in most low-income countries without substantial acceleration of primary health care. Factors have included insufficient political prioritisation of health, structural adjustment policies, poor governance, population growth, inadequate health systems, and scarce research and assessment on primary health care. We propose the following priorities for revitalising primary health care. Health-service infrastructure, including human resources and essential drugs, needs strengthening, and user fees …

Risk Factors, Chronic Disease, And Functionality Of Native American And Alaskan Native Elder Populations., Leander Russell Mcdonald
Risk Factors, Chronic Disease, And Functionality Of Native American And Alaskan Native Elder Populations., Leander Russell Mcdonald
Theses and Dissertations
Functional limitation rates are lower for American Indian and Alaskan Native elders although they experience higher rates of chronic disease. Research concerning the relationship between functional limitation, chronic disease and health risk factors among American Indian and Alaskan Native elder populations is limited. This paper contains results of an analysis of chronic disease's affect on functional limitation and the affect of health risk factors on chronic disease from a survey of 9,296 Native elders representing over 100 tribes from 88 sites. The self-reported data were gathered by elder providers using face-to-face interviewing and a standardized survey instrument. The sampling design …

Icpd To Mdgs: Missing Links And Common Grounds., Farina G Abrejo, Babar Shaikh, Sarah Saleem
Community Health Sciences
The ICPD agenda of reproductive health was declared as the most comprehensive one, which had actually broadened the spectrum of reproductive health and drove the states to embark upon initiatives to improve reproductive health status of their populations. However, like all other countries, Pakistan also seems to have shifted focus of its policies and programs towards achieving MDGs. As a result, concepts highlighted in the ICPD got dropped eventually. In spite of specific goals on maternal and child mortalities in MDGs and all the investment and policy shift, Pakistan has still one of the highest maternal mortality ratios among developing …
Reduction Of Toxicity In The Premature Neonate Addociated With Aluminum As A Contaminant Of Total Parenteral Nutrition Solution, Sujittra Srisung
Reduction Of Toxicity In The Premature Neonate Addociated With Aluminum As A Contaminant Of Total Parenteral Nutrition Solution, Sujittra Srisung
Dissertations
Aluminum (Al) is the third most common element in the Earth?s crust. It is widely consumed in water, foods, and drugs. However, in humans, the uptake of aluminum into the body and its deposition in tissues has been linked to conditions of medical concern, including many neurological disorders such as dialysis dementia, Alzheimer?s disease, Parkinson?s dementia and Down?s syndrome. Premature neonates who receive intravenous feeding (TPN) are at a high risk for Al toxicity because the TPN solutions are contaminated with Al3+, which is not excreted effectively due to poor kidney development in these patients. The FDA has recommended regulations …

Household Wealth And Heterogeneous Impacts Of A Market-Based Training Program: The Case Of Projoven In Peru, Jose Galdo, Miguel Jaramillo, Veronica S. Montalva, Sonia Moreau
Household Wealth And Heterogeneous Impacts Of A Market-Based Training Program: The Case Of Projoven In Peru, Jose Galdo, Miguel Jaramillo, Veronica S. Montalva, Sonia Moreau
Economics - All Scholarship
This paper analyzes the relationship between households' wealth and heterogeneous treatment impacts for a market-based training program that has benefited more than 40,000 disadvantaged individuals in Peru since 1996. We proxy long-run wealth by a linear index based on 21 household assets, and three main findings emerge. First, we find that voluntary choices among eligibles, rather than administrative choices, play a bigger role in explaining demographic disparities in program participation. Second, quantile treatment effects on the treated suggest important differences in program impacts at different quantiles of earnings, and strong differences in distributional impacts for men and women. Third, both …

Effect Of Sulphur On Soil Ph, Growth And Productivity Of Rape Seed Plant, Ali. M .A. Al-Khafage, Laith Mohammed Jawad Al-Shamma
Baghdad Science Journal
A field trial was conducted in Experimental Station of The Field Crops Department – College Of Agriculture In Abu Ghraib, University of Baghdad to assess the effect of sulphur applications and the time after application on pH and EC of soil sample solutions ,and on the growth and yield of rape seed (Brassica napus L.)A split plot design was used with four replications , The main plot included four sulphur applications levels (0,2000,3000,4000Kg S/ha) the sub plot were the time after application (0,1,2,and 3 moths) .Sulphur application significantly decreased soil pH value ,although that decrease reached minimum parameter after two …
Mutagenic Effect Of Crucifers Lepidium Sativum And Eruca Sativa In Comparison To Carrot Daucus Carota, Zahra M. Al-Khafaji, Elham A. Khalaf, Gaith L Al-Azawi
Mutagenic Effect Of Crucifers Lepidium Sativum And Eruca Sativa In Comparison To Carrot Daucus Carota, Zahra M. Al-Khafaji, Elham A. Khalaf, Gaith L Al-Azawi
Baghdad Science Journal
The mutagenic effect of some crucifers widely consumed Lepiduim sativum (Garden cress) and Arugula (Eruca sativa) was studied in comparison to carrot (Daucus carota), using bacterial mutagenic system composed of three bacterial isolates; (Bacillus spp)G3 (Arthrobacter spp)G12, and (Brevibacterium spp)G27 ,. Treatment of isolates with plant extracts led to reduction in survival fraction (Sx)at different levels except that Aurgula extract did not show any inhibitory effect in isolates G12 and G27. Crucifers extracts induced streptomycin resistant mutants in G12 at higher level than G3 , but not in G27. No resistance to rifimpacin was detected in all isolates.
