Global Health Law: A Definition And Grand Challenges, Lawrence O. Gostin, Allyn L. Taylor
Global Health Law: A Definition And Grand Challenges, Lawrence O. Gostin, Allyn L. Taylor
O'Neill Institute Papers
It has been only recently that scholars have engaged in a serious discussion of "public health law." This academic discourse examines the role of the state and civil society in health promotion and disease prevention within the country. There is an important emerging literature on the international dimensions of health, but no similar systematic definition and exposition of a field we call "global health law." In this article we aim to fill this gap by defining global health law and characterizing the grand challenges. Given the rapid and expanding globalization that is a defining feature of today's world, the need …
Global Health Law Governance, Lawrence O. Gostin
Global Health Law Governance, Lawrence O. Gostin
O'Neill Institute Papers
The field of public health law traditionally focuses on law at the national and sub-national level. National legal systems, however, are inadequate to deal with major threats to humans. Despite the inadequacies of national governance, there are fundamental questions that need resolution in the field of global health law: Why should governments care about the health of people far away? Are profound health disparities just and, if not, is there a corresponding obligation to redress the injustice? Can international law effectively bind governments, foundations, and corporations to act for the global good? This article, based on a lecture at Emory …

The Biomechanics Of Ballistochory In Impatiens Pallida, Lua Del Campo
The Biomechanics Of Ballistochory In Impatiens Pallida, Lua Del Campo
Pomona Senior Theses
This research is an analysis of the explosive seed dispersal of Impatiens pallida fruit. Data was taken using high-speed video and analyzed using LoggerPro video analysis software. From the videos we discerned a qualitative model for dehiscence, a description of how the process unfolds, and from our data we deduced quantitative values for the velocity, momentum, and energy of the system. We were also able to glean a lower bound of Young’s modulus E of the fruit tissue. These results and the tools of analysis that generate them are the foundation for the development of a theoretical model of the …

Web-Based Information Management System For The Long Term Ecological Research Program In Kenting, Taiwan, Yang-Chi Chang, Meng-Tsung Lee, Kun-Chi Lai
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper introduces a web-based information management system which has been set up as a collaborative facility to allow key environmental and ecological information access for the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) in Kenting, Taiwan. The coral reef ecosystem degradation in Kenting has concerned both public and private sectors, for which a LTER team was formed to investigate the problem. A multi-functional web-based system integrates diverse data collections and analyses efforts of team members during the project span. It also provides authorities with effective information and knowledge for sustainable coral reef management. Three information technologies, web Database Management System (DBMS), …

Experimental Polychondritis: Induced Vs. Spontaneous., Jennifer L. Lamoureux
Experimental Polychondritis: Induced Vs. Spontaneous., Jennifer L. Lamoureux
Theses and Dissertations
We demonstrate evidence supporting two independent hypotheses related to experimental polychondritis: (1) co-expression of a “nonpathogenic” HLA-DQ allele with a “pathogenic” allele results in enhanced susceptibility to disease; and (2) age related immunological changes allow for the spontaneous onset of disease. Relapsing polychondritis (RP), a human autoimmune disease of unknown etiology in which cartilaginous sites are destroyed by cyclic inflammatory episodes, occurs most commonly during middle age. Collagen-induced polychondritis (CIP) develops in heterologous type II collagen (CII) immunized young (6–8 wk old) mice expressing HLA-DQ6α8β transgenes (tg) regardless of gender, and mirrors clinical RP. Although both DQ6αβ8αβ tg and DQ6α8β …
