The Hoover's Sign Of Pulmonary Disease: Molecular Basis And Clinical Relevance, Chambless Johnston, Narayanaswamy Krishnaswamy, Guha Krishnaswamy Sep 2008

The Hoover's Sign Of Pulmonary Disease: Molecular Basis And Clinical Relevance, Chambless Johnston, Narayanaswamy Krishnaswamy, Guha Krishnaswamy

ETSU Faculty Works

In the 1920's, Hoover described a sign that could be considered a marker of severe airway obstruction. While readily recognizable at the bedside, it may easily be missed on a cursory physical examination. Hoover's sign refers to the inspiratory retraction of the lower intercostal spaces that occurs with obstructive airway disease. It results from alteration in dynamics of diaphragmatic contraction due to hyperinflation, resulting in traction on the rib margins by the flattened diaphragm. The sign is reported to have a sensitivity of 58% and specificity of 86% for detection of airway obstruction. Seen in up to 70% of patients …

Coffee Intake And Risk Of Incident Diabetes In Puerto Rican Men: Results From The Puerto Rico Heart Health Program, Barbara J. Fuhrman, Ellen Smit, Carlos J. Crespo, Mario R. Garcia-Palmieri Sep 2008

Coffee Intake And Risk Of Incident Diabetes In Puerto Rican Men: Results From The Puerto Rico Heart Health Program, Barbara J. Fuhrman, Ellen Smit, Carlos J. Crespo, Mario R. Garcia-Palmieri

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Objective: To study prospectively the association of coffee intake with incident diabetes in the Puerto Rico Heart Health Program cohort, comprising 9824 middle-aged men (aged 35-79 years). Methods: Of 9824 men, 3869 did not provide a fasting blood sample at baseline, 1095 had prevalent diabetes and 131 were not given fasting glucose tests at any subsequent study visit. Thus, the present analysis includes 4685 participants. Diabetes was ascertained at baseline and at two study visits between 1968 and 1975 using fasting glucose tests and self-reports of physician-diagnosed diabetes or use of insulin or hypoglycaemic medication. Logistic regression analysis was used …

Breakdown And Invertebrate Colonization Of Dead Wood In Wetland, Upland, And River Habitats, Amy Braccia, Darold P. Batzer Sep 2008

Breakdown And Invertebrate Colonization Of Dead Wood In Wetland, Upland, And River Habitats, Amy Braccia, Darold P. Batzer

Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research

Breakdown of woody debris in river and upland habitats as well as the interactions between wood and invertebrates have been well described. Studies of wood in wetlands are rare, and far less is known about breakdown and invertebrate use of wood in these transitional habitats. This study experimentally assessed breakdown and invertebrate colonization of wood in a floodplain wetland and directly related patterns in the wetland to adjacent river and upland habitats. Over a 2.7 year period, we monitored breakdown and invertebrate presence in 10 cm diameter × 150 cm long sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua L.) logs in a floodplain wetland …

Agricultural R&D Policy: A Tragedy Of The International Commons, Jennifer S. James, Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston Sep 2008

Agricultural R&D Policy: A Tragedy Of The International Commons, Jennifer S. James, Philip G. Pardey, Julian M. Alston

Agribusiness

Over the past 50 years public agricultural research has contributed enormously to humanity, enabling the supply of food to grow faster than demand in spite of a rapidly growing population, income growth, and shrinking natural resources. Nonetheless, in many countries we see waning public support for agricultural R&D, especially in Africa, a diversion of research resources from farm productivity towards other agendas, and early warning signs of a slowdown in agricultural productivity. The world has continued to collectively underinvest in agricultural R&D because of domestic and international market failures associated with appropriability problems. Governments have failed to effectively address these …

Cervical Screening A Study On The Prevalence Of The Risk-Factors For Developing Cervical Cancer Among Young Women, Jennifer Cann Sep 2008

Cervical Screening A Study On The Prevalence Of The Risk-Factors For Developing Cervical Cancer Among Young Women, Jennifer Cann

Dissertations

This study had three aims: to determine the prevalence of the risk-factors for contracting HPV (the Human Papillomavirus) and developing cervical cancer among young women; to establish if there are any links between the presence of these risk-factors, attendance for cervical screening and abnormal cervical screening results; and to ascertain the key barriers to the prevention of cervical cancer. The risk-factors were identified from literature as being sexually active at a young age, having increasing numbers of sexual partners for females and their partners, having had a sexually transmitted infection/disease (STI), smoking and long-term use of the oral contraceptive pill. …

Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith Sep 2008

Critical Review Of The Literature On Marine Mammal Population Modelling, Edward O. Keith

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports

A comprehensive literature review and modeling effort have been conducted in order to determine which vital rates are most important to determining the growth and sustainability of marine mammal populations. Also addressed are the impacts of life-history, ecological, and genetic variation on vital rates and population sustainability and how much each vital parameter can change before a change in population trend would be expected. Additionally, the influence of ecological energetics and foraging strategies on vital rates and their limits of sustainable change are examined, and the nature of how an increase in sound in the marine environment might influence marine …
