Something's Fishy Here, Kate Comer Sep 2008

Something's Fishy Here, Kate Comer

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

I wrote this piece as a sort of Harlot test run. When we began talking about the need for public-oriented rhetorical criticism, Jim Fredal challenged me to figure out what that might look like. I'd recently written a rather academic analysis of Hans Christian Andersen's original "Little Mermaid" and was hoping to make it relevant/current; Disney's version had just been re-released in a "Platinum Edition" DVD and was being adapted into a Broadway show. So it made sense to put it all together, using my sister as my ideal audience: smart, fun, feministá and concerned about her new baby's exposure …

Molecular And Macromolecular Alterations Of Recombinant Adenoviral Vectors Do Not Resolve Changes In Hepatic Drug Metabolism During Infection, Shellie M Callahan, Piyanuch Wonganan, Maria A Croyle Sep 2008

Molecular And Macromolecular Alterations Of Recombinant Adenoviral Vectors Do Not Resolve Changes In Hepatic Drug Metabolism During Infection, Shellie M Callahan, Piyanuch Wonganan, Maria A Croyle

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In this report we test the hypothesis that long-term virus-induced alterations in CYP occur from changes initiated by the virus that may not be related to the immune response. Enzyme activity, protein expression and mRNA of CYP3A2, a correlate of human CYP3A4, and CYP2C11, responsive to inflammatory mediators, were assessed 0.25, 1, 4, and 14 days after administration of several different recombinant adenoviruses at a dose of 5.7 x 1012 virus particles (vp)/kg to male Sprague Dawley rats. Wild type adenovirus, containing all viral genes, suppressed CYP3A2 and 2C11 activity by 37% and 39%, respectively within six hours. Levels fell …

Economic Impact Of Businesses Assisted By Southwest Michigan First, George A. Erickcek, Randall W. Eberts Sep 2008

Economic Impact Of Businesses Assisted By Southwest Michigan First, George A. Erickcek, Randall W. Eberts

Reports

This report estimates the contribution to the Kalamazoo-Portage MSA's economy by businesses that have received substantial assistance from Southwest Michigan First (SMF), a private, not-for-profit economic development agency serving the greater Kalamazoo region. The report examines the trends in employment, gross regional product, and wages and salaries generated by the 105 firms that SMF staff identified as receiving substantial assistance from SMF between 2000 and 2008. The estimates extend through the year 2012 in order to capture the employment projections offered by some of the assisted firms. The study also provides upper bound estimates of the benefit-cost ratio of the …

Applications Of The Bivariate Gamma Distribution In Nutritional Epidemiology And Medical Physics, Jolene Barker Sep 2008

Applications Of The Bivariate Gamma Distribution In Nutritional Epidemiology And Medical Physics, Jolene Barker

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis the utility of a bivariate gamma distribution is explored. In the field of nutritional epidemiology a nutrition density transformation is used to reduce collinearity. This phenomenon will be shown to result due to the independent variables following a bivariate gamma model. In the field of radiation oncology paired comparison of variances is often performed. The bivariate gamma model is also appropriate for fitting correlated variances. A method for simulating bivariate gamma random variables is presented. This method is used to generate data from several bivariate gamma models and the asymptotic properties of a test statistic, suggested for …

Low Specific Conductivity Limits Growth And Survival Of The New Zealand Mud Snail From The Upper Owens River, California, David B. Herbst, Michael T. Bogan, Robert A. Lusardi Sep 2008

Low Specific Conductivity Limits Growth And Survival Of The New Zealand Mud Snail From The Upper Owens River, California, David B. Herbst, Michael T. Bogan, Robert A. Lusardi

Western North American Naturalist

The New Zealand mud snail (NZMS), Potamopyrgus antipodarum (Gray), is an invasive species of aquatic snail that is becoming widespread in inland and coastal waters of the western United States. The New Zealand mud snail can have significant impacts on stream ecosystems, as they may consume a large fraction of available algae production and compete with and displace native invertebrates. Even though the distribution of this species is expanding, the habitat conditions conducive to invasion are incompletely understood. Surveys following the NZMS invasion in the Upper Owens River, California, indicated that the snail may be excluded from waters where dissolved …

Polygynous Mating Behavior In The Endangered Tehuantepec Jackrabbit (Lepus Flavigularis), Tamara Rioja, Consuelo Lorenzo, Eduardo Naranjo, Laura Scott, Arturo Carrillo-Reyes Sep 2008

Polygynous Mating Behavior In The Endangered Tehuantepec Jackrabbit (Lepus Flavigularis), Tamara Rioja, Consuelo Lorenzo, Eduardo Naranjo, Laura Scott, Arturo Carrillo-Reyes

Western North American Naturalist

This is the 1st effort to determine the mating behavior of the Tehuantepec jackrabbit (Lepus flavigularis), an endangered endemic species from southern Mexico whose distribution is limited to the Isthmus of Tehuantepec region. Between June 2006 and December 2007, observations of 60 adult radio-marked jackrabbits were carried out in Santa María del Mar, Oaxaca, Mexico. Direct observations showed that the breeding season of the Tehuantepec jackrabbit lasted an average of 200 days per year, with a high-intensity period during the rainy season (May–October); we also confirmed a polygamous reproductive behavior for this species. More importantly, we showed that …

The Life Cycles Of Claassenia Sabulosa And Hesperoperla Pacifica (Plecoptera: Perlidae) In Two Colorado Streams, Richard A. Thorp, Boris C. Kondratieff, Emily C. Thorp, Patrick B. Odenbeck, Michael J. Jarrett Sep 2008

The Life Cycles Of Claassenia Sabulosa And Hesperoperla Pacifica (Plecoptera: Perlidae) In Two Colorado Streams, Richard A. Thorp, Boris C. Kondratieff, Emily C. Thorp, Patrick B. Odenbeck, Michael J. Jarrett

Western North American Naturalist

We compared the life cycles of Claassenia sabulosa (Banks 1900) and Hesperoperla pacifica (Banks 1900) (Plecoptera: Perlidae) in allopatry and sympatry by studying 4 populations in 3 streams of the South Platte River Watershed, Colorado. We estimated 2-year life cycles for both C. sabulosa and H. pacifica in allopatry and sympatry. Evidence of egg diapausing and extended larval recruitment was noted for both species in allopatry and sympatry. There were no apparent differences in larval growth, larval recruitment, or adult emergence periodicity between allopatric and sympatric populations of C. sabulosa. In contrast, allopatric and sympatric H. pacifica populations exhibited differences …
