The Real Price Of Atlantic Salmon, Courtney Henson
The Real Price Of Atlantic Salmon, Courtney Henson
PEEL Alumni Scholarship
Salmon aquaculture has developed commercially in countries with natural salmon populations since the 1970s. Aquaculture is the farming of fish under controlled conditions in natural water bodies or in closed systems. Fundación Chile, a nonprofit organization associated with the government whose goal is to foster Chilean business and industrial growth, introduced salmon aquaculture to Chile in the 1980s. The industry has boomed and Chile has become the world’s second largest salmon-producing country. Chilean salmon and trout exports have increased about 500% in the past decade. The expansion of commercial salmon aquaculture has resulted in the cost of salmon to consumers …

Rising Global Food Prices: The Need For Re-Regulating Commodity Futures, Megan S. Chapman
PEEL Alumni Scholarship
The sharp rise in the price of basic foodstuffs in the last year has impacted consumers around the globe, but the ill effects are disproportionately felt in developing countries. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (“FAO”) reports seventy-five million more people living below the hunger line in 2007, raising the number of undernourished to 923 million worldwide; these numbers are likely to increase even more sharply in 2008. Food prices for staples such as flour, corn, and rice have risen fifty-two percent on average from 2007 to 2008. In developing countries, where families may spend as much as fifty to …

Folk Lore Uses Of Some Plants By The Tribes Of Madhya Pradesh With Special Reference To Their Conservation, Sumeet Dwivedi, Abhishek Dwivedi, S. N. Dwivedi
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Madhya Pradesh sustains a very rich traditional medicinal plant wealth and inherits unique plant and animal communities. Due to deforestation, loss of biodiversity and indiscriminate exploitation of wild and natural resources, many valuable herbs like Abrus precatorious, Bauhinia variegta, Mucuna prurita, etc., are at the verge of extinction. The present paper enumerates status, conservation strategies and traditional uses of 80 plant species by the tribes of Madhya Pradesh. The claims were gathered by interviewing tribes of the study area. Attempts were made to verify the efficacy of claims with actual beneficiaries, although this was not possible in all cases …

Learn To Live: Simple And Practical Activities To Promote Health, Nutrition And Physical Fitness In The K-8 Curriculum, Ali Ann Dirga, Stasinos Stavrianeas
Journal of Youth Development
Current health education and physical fitness programs have failed to prevent the youth obesity epidemic. The diminishing emphasis placed on such programs due to curricular and budgetary constraints results in few opportunities to promote students’ active participation in regular physical activity and health education programs. Findings indicate that a successful program to promote healthy nutrition, an active lifestyle, and regular physical exercise requires that the information is easily accessible, and presented in a clear and concise format. Readers are introduced to a comprehensive program, easily adjustable throughout the K-8 curriculum. It is designed to complement regular classroom activities by introducing …

Purpose—To examine whether adaptations in physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and resting metabolic rate (RMR) during weight loss were associated with future weight regain in overweight/obese, older women.
Research Methods and Procedures—Thirty-four overweight/obese (BMI=25–40 kg/m2), postmenopausal women underwent a 20-week weight loss intervention of hypocaloric diet with (low- or high-intensity) or without treadmill walking (weekly caloric deficit was ~11760 kJ), with a subsequent 12-month follow-up. RMR (via indirect calorimetry), PAEE (by RT3 accelerometer) and body composition (by DXA) were measured before and after intervention. Body weight and self-reported information on physical activity were collected after intervention, …

Enhanced Plant Nutrient Use Efficiency With Pgpr And Amf In An Integrated Nutrient Management System, A. O. Adesemoye, H. A. Torbert, J. W. Kloepper
Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications
A 3-year field study was conducted with field corn from 2005 to 2007 to test the hypothesis that microbial inoculants that increase plant growth and yield can enhance nutrient uptake, and thereby remove more nutrients—especially N, P, and K—from the field as part of an integrated nutrient management system. The field trial evaluated microbial inoculants, which include a commercially available plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF), and their combination across 2 tillage systems (no-till and conventional till) and 2 fertilization regimes (poultry litter and ammonium nitrate). Data were collected on plant height, yield (dry mass of ears and …

"No Cherries Grow On Our Trees": A Social Policy Research Paper For The Take Action Project, A Public Policy Initiative To Address Women’S Poverty And Violence Against Women, Wendy Komiotis, Nora Currie, Janet Mosher
Commissioned Reports, Studies and Public Policy Documents
This is a project about women, not as a homogeneous and objectified category, but about women as agents whose lives are shaped by the multiple dimensions of their identities, including their Aboriginal status, age, class, disability, race, sexual orientation, gender identity and status (be it family, immigration, or health). It is a project that speaks to the realities of women’s lives, in particular the harsh realities of poverty and violence. It is also a project about you. Given the high rates of both poverty and violence, many of you will share these experiences. Many of you may be one job, …
Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish
Methadone For Treatment Of Pregnant Opiate Addicted Women: Is There A Safer Alternative? A Review Of Literature, Holly L. Tichelkamp, Thomas G. Parish
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Methadone is commonly used for the treatment of pregnant opiate-addicts. But, it can have severe effects on the neonate including Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome, increased length of stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, and intrauterine growth retardation. Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome includes neurological excitability, gastrointestinal dysfunction, and autonomic signs. Because of these adverse effects, studies have been conducted to determine what can help reduce the severe complications caused by methadone. Varied dosages of methadone and alternative medications, such as buprenorphine, slow-release morphine, and others have been studied. Most of the alternative medications, especially buprenorphine, are gaining popularity in Europe where there …

The Effects Of Packaging Film And Storage Temperature On The Internal Package Atmosphere And Fermentation Enzyme Activity Of Sweet Potato Slices, Elif Erturk, David H. Picha
The Effects Of Packaging Film And Storage Temperature On The Internal Package Atmosphere And Fermentation Enzyme Activity Of Sweet Potato Slices, Elif Erturk, David H. Picha
Faculty Publications
Fresh-cut sweet potato slices were packaged in low- (PD900), medium- (PD961) and high-permeability (PD941) film bags, and were stored at 2 or 8C for 14 days. Changes in O 2, CO 2, ethanol and acetaldehyde concentrations in the headspace were monitored over 14 days. The activities of fermentation enzymes and the concentration of fermentation volatiles were measured from tissue extracts on days 0, 7 and 14. Storage at 8C was an excessively high temperature for fresh-cut sweet potatoes to maintain aerobic respiration for 14 days. Low-permeability film bags resulted in anaerobiosis at 2 and 8C. Medium-permeability film bags were able …

Effects Of Some Heavy Metals On Chlorophyll Accumulation In Barbula Lambarenensis, P. O. Fatoba, Emem G. Udoh
Effects Of Some Heavy Metals On Chlorophyll Accumulation In Barbula Lambarenensis, P. O. Fatoba, Emem G. Udoh
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Samples of moss (Barbula lambarenensis) with their substrates collected from Belewu Drive, Oke Odo, Ilorin, were taken to the screen house of the University of Ilorin biological garden to monitor the effects and tolerance of this plant to different heavy metals. The moss samples were divided into eleven regimes, widely separated from one another to avoid contaminations. Ten regimes were differently irrigated with 1000 ppm and 2000 ppm of lead, copper, cadmium, iron and vanadium thrice a week. The eleventh treatment served as the control, and was irrigated with distilled water. It was found that these heavy metals …

An Evaluation Of The Genotoxic Effects Of The Seed Decoction Of Cassia Tora Linn. (Leguminosae) In An Allium Cepa Model, Pallavi Solanke Et Al.
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
Cytological effects of Cassia tora seed decoction were evaluated in Allium cepa root tip cells. Bulbs were grown in pure tap water (controls, Gr. I) and also in six concentrations (0.15 mg/ml, 0.31 mg/ml, 0.62 mg/ml, 1.25 mg/ml, 2.5 mg/ml and 5 mg/ml) of C. tora seed decoction in tap water (experimental, Grs. II). Parameters of study were 'mean root length' and morphology i.e. colour and shape of root tips at 72 hr of cultivation and 'mitotic Index', chromosomal aberrations and abnormal mitosis at 48 hr of cultivation. Physico-chemical characterization of decoction was also made. No changes in the morphology …
