BACKGROUND: Meningomyelocele (MM) is a common human birth defect. MM is a disorder of neural development caused by contributions from genes and environmental factors that result in the NTD and lead to a spectrum of physical and neurocognitive phenotypes.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary approach has been taken to develop a comprehensive understanding of MM through collaborative efforts from investigators specializing in genetics, development, brain imaging, and neurocognitive outcome. Patients have been recruited from five different sites: Houston and the Texas-Mexico border area; Toronto, Canada; Los Angeles, California; and Lexington, Kentucky. Genetic risk factors for MM have been assessed by genotyping and …

This assessment reveals food system sustainability trends in Oregon and Washington, focusing specifically on the producers in both states and the consumers in the Portland- Vancouver region. We began the assessment by asking a group of food system stakeholders from Oregon and Washington to define broadly supported goals for a sustainable food system. They also helped us identify the data necessary to understand trends in the food system. This information can be used in the future to establish benchmarks and to assess future progress toward food system sustainability goals. Framed by stakeholder concerns, this report will assist program and policy …

Alcohol Consumption By Aging Adults In The United States: Health Benefits And Detriments, Maria Pontes Ferreira, M. K. Suzy Weems
Alcohol Consumption By Aging Adults In The United States: Health Benefits And Detriments, Maria Pontes Ferreira, M. K. Suzy Weems
Nutrition and Food Science Faculty Research Publications
The most rapidly growing segment of the US population is that of older adults (≥65 years). Trends of aging adults (those aged ≥50 years) show that fewer women than men consume alcohol, women consume less alcohol than men, and total alcohol intake decreases after retirement. A U- or J-shaped relationship between alcohol intake and mortality exists among middle-aged (age 45 to 65 years) and older adults. Thus, alcohol can be considered either a tonic or a toxin in dose-dependent fashion. Active areas of research regarding the possible benefits of moderate alcohol consumption among aging individuals include oxidative stress, dementia, psychosocial …

Methamphetamine Prevention Education: Extension Responds To A National Issue, Kirk A. Astroth, Mike Vogel
Journal of Extension
Methamphetamine is quickly becoming one of the nation's most dangerous drugs, affecting people of all socio-economic categories and geographic locations. In response to this emerging crisis, MSU Extension specialists developed a range of research-based programs and materials, in collaboration with key state agencies, to combat rising meth use in one rural Western state. The materials have been widely distributed and results indicate that the materials are having positive effects on meth use, production, and awareness. As a result of this cooperative effort, valuable lessons have been learned that can help other states deal with critical social issues.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is one of the largest federal agencies in the U.S. It has many different subdivisions. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is one of them. FSIS is responsible for ensuring that the nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry, and egg products is safe, healthy, and correctly labeled and packaged. Last year, the U.S. House of Representatives has introduced an enormous bill called the Food and Energy Security Act of 2007. Nutrition, conservation, energy, producer income protection, rural development, trade, forestry, and livestock are the major provisions that are part of this massive farm …

Local Foods: Estimating Capacity, David Timmons, Qingbin Wang, Dan Lass
Local Foods: Estimating Capacity, David Timmons, Qingbin Wang, Dan Lass
Journal of Extension
While local food is enjoying new interest in much of the country, data revealing the extent of local food production and consumption are typically lacking. This lack of data has made it difficult to set local food goals and assess progress toward such goals. This article describes two methods for quantifying local food consumption and presents estimation results using national and state data. The local food indicators presented in this article can be easily estimated with publicly available data and represent low cost indicators of local food use that Extension professionals can use to assist clientele.

Measuring Impacts In Risk Management Education--The Beehive Master Beef Manager Program, Ck Chapman, Dr Zobell, Eb Godfrey, D Feuz
Journal of Extension
The purpose of Extension risk management education is to assist clientele by helping them make better management decisions. The results of this effort can sometimes take months or years to be expressed. It is difficult for Extension faculty to wait for this interval because administrators and funding entities demand results for programs usually within the space of one year. Curriculum-based programming enables faculty member(s) to develop enough data about attitude changes and knowledge transfer over several workshops to demonstrate statistical changes, compared to single workshops. Using multiple evaluation instruments, Extension faculty can show implementation patterns that further demonstrate program value.

Ultraviolet And Pulsed Electric Field Treatments Have Additive Effect On Inactivation Of E. Coli In Apple Juice, T. K. Gachovska, Saurabh Kumar, Harshanardhan Thippareddi, F. Williams
P. F. (Paul Frazer) Williams Publications
Apple juice inoculated with Escherichia coli ATCC 23472 was processed continuously using either ultraviolet (UV), high-voltage pulsed electric field (PEF), or a combination of the PEF and UV treatment systems. Apple juice was pumped through either of the systems at 3 flow rates (8, 14, and 20 mL/min). E. coli was reduced by 3.46 log CFU/mL when exposed in a 50 cm length of UV treatment chamber at 8 mL/min (2.94 s treatment time with a product temperature increase of 13 °C). E. coli inactivation of 4.87 log CFU/mL was achieved with a peak electric field strength of 60 kV/cm …

Sepsis And Septic Shock. A Global Perspective And Initiative, Niranjan Kissoon
Saudi Medical Journal
Sepsis and septic shock are major contributors to mortality in children worldwide. While many factors may contribute to poor outcomes, resource limitations play a role in developing countries. However, early recognition and aggressive therapy using simple measures can reverse shock in most children. Indeed, great gains have been realized in some areas with limited resources. In this manuscript, the significant gains over the last few years are outlined, and issues to consider in resource limited environments are discussed. In addition, an invitation is extended to participate in a global sepsis initiative.
Spinal Shrinkage As A Measure Of Spinal Loading In Male Saudi University Students And Its Relationship With Body Mass Index, Talay Yar
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To compare spinal shrinkage in obese and non-obese young male adults and to find any correlation between them. METHODS: In 2006, 123 second-year male students studying in the Colleges of Medicine and Dentistry, King Faisal University, Dammam, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, were examined for their weights, standing heights, and recumbent lengths. In this cross-sectional observational study, the students were grouped according to body mass index (BMI): normal range BMI <25; overweight BMI = 25-29.9; obese-BMI >30. Spinal shrinkage was calculated as the difference between standing height and the recumbent length of the subject. Influence of BMI on the magnitude of spinal shrinkage was compared by …25;>

Concern about rising prices and unstable sources of petroleum fuels is driving the search for U.S. domestically produced, renewable transportation fuels, such as biodiesel. Federal incentives of up to $1.10 per gallon have been supplemented by additional incentives and mandated biodiesel use in many states. The Renewable Fuel Standard in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 requires the domestic use of 1 billion gallons of biomass-based diesel fuel by 2012, most of which likely will be biodiesel.
U.S. biodiesel production is primarily from soybean oil, but recent high prices have forced many producers to use lower-cost feedstocks such …
