Dna Polymorphisms And Response To Treatment In Patients With Chronic Hepatitis C: Results From The Halt-C Trial, Richard W. Lambrecht, Herbert L. Bonkovsky

UCHC Articles - Research

Background/Aim

Certain host genetic polymorphisms reportedly affect the likelihood of a sustained virological response (SVR) to interferon treatment in subjects infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV). As part of the HALT-C trial we evaluated genetic associations among patients infected with HCV genotype 1 who had failed previous interferon treatment.

Methods

SVR was determined 24 weeks after completing treatment with pegylated interferon alfa-2a and ribavirin. Eight single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were selected on the basis of previously reported associations with treatment response. Genotypes were assessed by polymerase chain reaction-based assays. The percentage of patients who achieved SVR was determined for each …

Gender Differences In Motivation To Resolve Eating And Body Image Concerns In College Students, Harold L. Merriman, C. Jayne Brahler, Laura Dinan, Lauren Finzer

Physical Therapy Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to identify similarities and differences between college women and men with respect to their eating and body image concerns, weight fluctuation and level of motivation to resolve these concerns. 101 University of Dayton students participated in this study. Students completed an eating and body concern survey online.

Body image concerns were significantly greater for females compared to males (p=0.007) and significantly greater as motivation level to resolve the concerns increased (p=0.019). Eating concerns followed the same trends but did not reach statistical significance. Weight fluctuation in both genders increased significantly as motivation level increased …

Second-Generation Consumerism: Increasing Consumer Activation To Improve Health Outcomes And Lower Costs For Patients With Chronic Disease, Judith H. Hibbard, Katherine J. Hayes Oct 2008

Second-Generation Consumerism: Increasing Consumer Activation To Improve Health Outcomes And Lower Costs For Patients With Chronic Disease, Judith H. Hibbard, Katherine J. Hayes

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

With health care costs increasing, some policymakers have sought to make patients better health care consumers through increased cost-sharing linked with greater information on the cost of care. These may be successful cost containment strategies in the short term. But patients are just as likely to forgo necessary as unnecessary care, which ultimately leads to greater demand for more intensive and expensive care in the long term. Patients can, however, play an important role in preventing the onset of chronic conditions or preventing deterioration in health once they have been diagnosed with a chronic condition. In this chapter we discuss …

Got Controversy - Milk Does, Margaret Sova Mccabe Oct 2008

Got Controversy - Milk Does, Margaret Sova Mccabe

Law Faculty Scholarship

This article analyzes ongoing controversy over how to best label rBST-free milk. Recombinant bovine somatotropin is a genetically engineered drug administered by some farmers to their dairy herds to increase milk production. FDA first approved its use in 1994, despite great controversy. The FDA also issued labeling guidelines that allowed voluntary disclosure of rBST-free milk, so long as it carried the disclaimer that no difference could be detected between milk produced with rBST and rBST-free. The controversy continues today as consumers express a preference for rBST-free milk and many rBST-free producers label their milk this way. "Conventional" milk (with rBST) …

The Special Needs Of Women On College Campuses, Jeremy M. Jenkins, Dewayne A. Neeley, Timothy D. Woodcock, Hao Yuan Oct 2008

The Special Needs Of Women On College Campuses, Jeremy M. Jenkins, Dewayne A. Neeley, Timothy D. Woodcock, Hao Yuan

The College Student Experience (CNS 572)

The authors embarked on a journey to understand the special needs of women college students. They discovered two major themes that were explored in greater depth in an attempt to explain why these themes were more specific to college women than other populations. Although these needs may be extrapolated to other populations of college students they were of particular concern to the female college student population. The authors began by selecting a non-scientific restricted pool of female college students than spanned first-year, second-year and junior or third-year students. This student sample was interviewed to discover their concerns or perceptions about …

On Representations Of Quantum Groups Uq(Fm(K,H)), Xin Tang, Yunge Xu Oct 2008

On Representations Of Quantum Groups Uq(Fm(K,H)), Xin Tang, Yunge Xu

College of Health, Science, and Technology

We construct families of irreducible representations for a class of quantum groups Uq(fm(K,H). First, we realize these quantum groups as hyperbolic algebras. Such a realization yields natural families of irreducible weight representations for Uq(fm(K,H)). Second, we study the relationship between Uq(fm(K,H)) and Uq(fm(K)). As a result, any finite-dimensional weight representation of Uq(fm(K,H)) is proved to be completely reducible. Finally, we study the Whittaker model for the center of U q(fm(K,H)), and a classification of all irreducible Whittaker representations of Uq(fm(K,H)) is obtained. © 2008 Australian Mathematical Society.

Demographics And Spatio-Temporal Signature Of The Biotoxin Domoic Acid In California Sea Lion (Zalophus Californianus) Stranding Records, Adriana Bejarano, Frances Gulland, Tracey Goldstein, Judy St. Leger, Michele Hunter, Lori Schwacke, Frances Vandolah, Teri Rowles

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

California sea lions (Zalophus californianus) in otherwise good nutritional condition have been consistently affected by the marine biotoxin domoic acid since the late 1990s. In this study we evaluated the temporal and spatial stranding patterns of suspected and confirmed cases of domoic acid intoxicated sea lions from 1998 to 2006, using records of strandings along the California coast obtained from members of the California Marine Mammal Stranding Network. The majority of domoic acid cases were adult females (47%–82% of the total annual domoic acid cases), a contrast to strandings that were not related to domoic acid, which were …
