Natural Disaster And Sickness Shocks: Evidence Of Informal Social Insurance From Bangladesh, Pallab Mozumder Oct 2008

Natural Disaster And Sickness Shocks: Evidence Of Informal Social Insurance From Bangladesh, Pallab Mozumder

Himalayan Research Papers Archive

Bangladesh is prone to large scale natural disasters with consequent impacts on human health and survival. In 1998, Bangladesh experienced the flood of the century'. Households exposed to flooding had major crop failure, suffered from various water-borne diseases, lost shelter, assets and ability to meet their basic needs. Based on multiple rounds of household survey data from rural Bangladesh collected after the 1998 flooding, this article investigate the factors that contribute to reduce sickness shocks after a massive natural disaster. Results indicate that social cohesion built on group-based microfinance programs may provide an informal social insurance mechanism to reduce sickness …

Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature

A Series of Farm Bill Educational Meetings for Producers and Interested Policy Stakeholders in Kansas and Nebraska.

The debate on the 2007 Farm Bill has begun in earnest in Washington. The new Congress has already convened several hearings on farm policy issues, including energy and conservation. The Administration has just released its policy recommendations for the new farm bill, opening up further discussion that will grow over the coming months. The current farm bill, passed in 2002, runs through September 2007 and includes programs covering the 2007-2008 crop year. Before it expires, Congress will need to reconcile the current discussion …

Sensory Evaluation Of Ice Cream Made With Prebiotic Ingredients, Adeline K. Lum, Julie A. Albrecht Oct 2008

Sensory Evaluation Of Ice Cream Made With Prebiotic Ingredients, Adeline K. Lum, Julie A. Albrecht

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) and inulin are considered prebiotic ingredients and are FDA approved for use in food for human consumption. A prebiotic is a food ingredient that benefits the host by selectively stimulating the growth and activity of the beneficial bacteria in the colon. In this project, consumer acceptability of ice cream made with 10% of the sugar substituted with either inulin or FOS was tested. Physical tests were also conducted. The texture, water activity and L and b color values did not differ significantly for the treatments (Inulin and FOS) versus the control sample. The a value for color (red/green) …

Evaluating An Initiative To Increase Youth Participation In School And Community Gardening Activities, Kristi S. Lekies, Marcia Eames-Sheavly Oct 2008

Evaluating An Initiative To Increase Youth Participation In School And Community Gardening Activities, Kristi S. Lekies, Marcia Eames-Sheavly

Journal of Youth Development

Across the country, youth gardening opportunities are rapidly increasing, as is the need for documentation on successful strategies for working with young people. This paper describes the evaluation of the Greener Voices project, a three-year initiative created to increase youth participation in gardening activities through consultation, resources, and information provided to adult leaders at six sites across New York and Pennsylvania. The evaluation is highlighted to encourage others to think about ways to incorporate evaluation into gardening programs. Useful strategies include starting early with evaluation planning, using an underlying program theory or logic model, collecting data through multiple methods, coordinating …

Covering Our Bases: A Military 4-H Youth Development Program, Joanne Roueche, Debra Jones Oct 2008

Covering Our Bases: A Military 4-H Youth Development Program, Joanne Roueche, Debra Jones

Journal of Youth Development

Land-grant universities, through the 4-H program, have offered support and partnership to the military since World War I. More recently, the U. S. Army, Air Force, and 4-H have partnered to provide military installation youth programs involving over 7,000 youth in 4-H clubs in the United States and abroad. Military youth and families, not affiliated with Base or Post installations, were extended similar support as an aftermath of September 11, 2001. All youth involved through military outreach are enrolled as 4-H members through their respective counties integrating them into local, state, regional, and national 4-H activities and events. Authors share …

The Effects Of Food Stamps On Exiting Welfare And Becoming Employed For Welfare Recipients, Charles Baum Oct 2008

The Effects Of Food Stamps On Exiting Welfare And Becoming Employed For Welfare Recipients, Charles Baum

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

Welfare reform’s success encouraging employment may be affected by the federal Food Stamp program because many households receive welfare and Food Stamps. Food Stamp benefits could discourage employment because benefits are reduced proportionally with income; alternatively, it could encourage employment by increasing stability and allowing more resources to be allocated toward employment-related expenses. I examine the effects of Food Stamps on exiting welfare and becoming employed for welfare recipients. Results suggest, if anything, that Food Stamps discourage employment, and such benefits may discourage transitions off welfare, too. If so, then it may be necessary to study the determinants of welfare …

Using Social Cognitive Theory To Predict Physical Activity In Inner-City African American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry Oct 2008

Using Social Cognitive Theory To Predict Physical Activity In Inner-City African American School Children, Jeffrey J. Martin, Nate Mccaughtry

Kinesiology, Health and Sport Studies

Researchers using social cognitive theory and employing built environment constructs to predict physical activity (PA) in inner-city African American children is quite limited. Thus, the purpose of our investigation was to evaluate the ability of important social cognitive variables (e.g., self-efficacy) and built environment constructs (e.g., neighborhood hazards) to predict African American children’s PA. Children (N = 331, ages 10–14) completed questionnaires assessing social cognitive theory constructs and PA. Using multiple regression analyses we were able to account for 19% of the variance in PA. Based on standardized beta weights, the best predictors of PA were time spent outside …

Effects Of Filtration Temperature And Heat Treatment On Composition And Rheological Properties Of Whole Milk Ultrafiltration Retentates, John W. Montella Oct 2008

Effects Of Filtration Temperature And Heat Treatment On Composition And Rheological Properties Of Whole Milk Ultrafiltration Retentates, John W. Montella

Master's Theses

ABSTRACT

Effects of Filtration Temperature and Heat Treatment on Composition and Rheological Properties of Whole Milk Ultrafiltration Retentates

John William Montella

For the first part of my thesis, the effects of filtration temperature and heat treatment on the compositional properties of whole milk Ultrafiltration retentate (UF) were studied. Ultrafiltration is primarily run at temperatures in the range of 50-55°C but more and more plants are starting to filter at refrigeration temperatures. In the ultrafiltration of milk, filtration temperature can affect the composition of the retentate by affecting the chemistry of milk components. The application of a pasteurization step can also …
