Validation Of A Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Equation Predicting Body Composition Using Conductor Length Instead Of Height, Jessica Dawn Nye Jan 2008

Validation Of A Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis Equation Predicting Body Composition Using Conductor Length Instead Of Height, Jessica Dawn Nye

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is widely used in predicting body composition. Impedance of an electrical current that passes through the body is related to the composition of the body and the length of the conductor, conventionally estimated using height. The purpose of this study was to compare a BIA equation prediction fat-free mass (FFM) that utilized actual conductor length (Parsons) with a conventional BIA equation (NHANES), using hydrodensitometry as the reference method. Thirty-nine male and 53 female subjects were studied. For both sexes, FFM predicted by both Parsons and NHANES equations were equally and highly correlated with FFM measured using …

The Metabolic Effects Of Epigallo Catechin Gallate On Females At Rest And Low Exertion, Bret Mcconaughy Rust Jan 2008

The Metabolic Effects Of Epigallo Catechin Gallate On Females At Rest And Low Exertion, Bret Mcconaughy Rust

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Green tea extract (GTE) containing catechin polyphenols is marketed widely as a dietary supplement intended to enhance weight loss. Epigallo Catechin Gallate (EGCG) is a polyphenol found in green tea that some studies have found to increase Energy Expenditure (EE) and to decrease Respiratory Quotient (RQ) in human subjects. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two weeks of chronic supplementation of 540 mg of EGCG on anthropometric measurements, body composition, blood pressure, EE and RQ in adult women at rest and at low levels of exertion. Results trended toward reducing resting RQ (p=.098) but showed …

Central Pontine Myelinolysis Due To Rapid Correction Of Hyponatremia Induced By Excessive Water Intake, Hussein A. Algahtani, Ahmed A. Attar, G.Bryan Young, Abdulrahman M. Shami

Neurosciences

We report a 25-year-old female with a recent diagnosis of gastric B-cell lymphoma based on imaging and pathological findings. She was discharged against medical advice after it was recommended to her, by an “alternative medicine practitioner,” to restrict her diet to excessive ingestion of the “Holy water Zamzam” (natural well water in Makkah). She presented back with altered level of awareness and severe, new-onset hyponatremia. The hyponatremia was corrected rapidly and her condition improved. Six days later, she developed the classical pyramidal and extrapyramidal features of central pontine myelinolysis, documented by MRI. The patient succumbed to her original disease 3 …

Exploring The Personal Reality Of Disability And Recovery: A Tool For Empowering The Rehabilitation Process, Ashley E. Kurz, Nicole Saint-Louis, Janice P. Burke, Margaret G. Stineman

Publications and Research

People experiencing disability and chronic disease often feel powerless, relinquishing medical control to “more knowledgeable” professionals. This article presents qualitative and quantitative results from three individual patients experiencing an emerging procedure called Recovery Preference Exploration (RPE). To inspire greater patient involvement, self-direction, and individual choice, we instructed participants to create an imagined recovery path, exposing recovery preferences while learning about clinical rehabilitation concepts. Results uncovered important values and feelings about disability, providing a richer context for patient evaluation and treatment goal modification. Applying mixed methods, RPE is presented as an explanatory process for quantifying recovery preferences in a way that …

Assessing The Market For Human Reproductive Tissue Alienability: Why Can We Sell Our Eggs But Not Our Livers?, Brenda Reddix-Smalls Jan 2008

Assessing The Market For Human Reproductive Tissue Alienability: Why Can We Sell Our Eggs But Not Our Livers?, Brenda Reddix-Smalls

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Currently, an unregulated marketplace for assisted reproductive technology exists in the United States. For some people suffering from infertility, the ability to purchase human reproductive tissue, eggs, and sperm yields a maximum benefit when examined in a market context. Buyers, sellers, supply and demand, and technological advances all operate in a robust marketplace to provide the infertile with a supply of human eggs for reproduction with minimum state and federal regulatory control. Conversely, the buying and selling of all other human organs and tissues is prohibited in the United States by several federal statutes. The National Organ Transplant Act (NOTA) …

Old Problem, New Tactic: Making The Case For Legislation To Combat Employment Discrimination Based On Family Caregiver Status, Noreen Farrell, Genevieve Guertin Jan 2008

Old Problem, New Tactic: Making The Case For Legislation To Combat Employment Discrimination Based On Family Caregiver Status, Noreen Farrell, Genevieve Guertin

UC Law Journal

Employment discrimination against employees based on their status as parents or family caregivers occurs at an alarming rate in this country, and is hardly a new phenomenon. Family Responsibilities Discrimination (FRD) disproportionately impacts working mothers, but advocates have begun to look beyond traditional gender discrimination and family leave theories of liability to strategies based on legislation expressly prohibiting discrimination based on parental or family caregiver status. This Article examines FRD legislation passed or proposed in recent years in the context of criticisms of this strategy by Professor Peggie Smith, who addressed the issue in her article Parental Status Employment Discrimination: …

Effect Of Food Deprivation On The Metabolic Profile Of Llamas (Lama Glama) In The Letanias Experimental Station - Viacha, Edwin Eddy Ali Quisbert

Theses and Dissertations

In the highlands, where regular agriculture and livestock are not viable, raising camelids is the only means of subsistence for rural families. While grazing during the dry season in the high Andean region, llamas face serious nutritional deficiencies due to limited forage availability. This study was done at the experimental station of the Benson Agriculture and Food Institute located in the community of Letanias which is in the municipality of Viacha. The objective was to determine the effect of food deprivation on the metabolic profile of blood plasma (concentration of urea-nitrogen, total protein, albumin, and creatinine) as well as the …

The Uses Of Rickets: Race, Technology, And The Politics Of Preventive Medicine In The Early Twentieth Century, M. Allison Arwady

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Rickets, the bone disease classically caused by Vitamin D deficiency, was one of the most common diseases of children 100 years ago. It has been recognized as a disease of urban living and linked to issues of race and culture for generations. This paper uses unpublished patient records from 1904 to 1909 and archival and published materials from multiple community-based trials, including the New Haven Rickets Study (1923-1926), to explore how the definition, diagnosis, and treatment of rickets shifted in the first decades of the twentieth century in the United States. Before 1910, as evidenced by patient records, neither the …

Caring For Caregivers: An Hiv/Aids Workplace Intervention For Hospital Staff In Zambia—Evaluation Results, Karusa Kiragu, Mutinta Nyumbu, Thabale J. Ngulube, Panganani Njobvu, Chilufya Mwaba, Arthur Kalimbwe, Spike Bradford

HIV and AIDS

The Horizons Program collaborated on a Caring for Caregivers initiative in Zambia whose objective was to develop and test a risk-reduction workplace program for hospital staff. This was motivated by the recognition that hospital workers are often overlooked in HIV programming, and yet many are infected or affected by HIV. It was also motivated by the fact that hospital staff are heterogeneous, with both clinical and non-clinical staff having varying levels of understanding regarding HIV transmission. Caring for Caregivers was a peer education program targeted at hospital staff and implemented in two hospitals in Zambia, with a combined staff of …
