Catfish Consumption As A Contributor To Elevated Pcb Levels In A Non-Hispanic Black Subpopulation, Max Weintraub, Linda S. Birnbaum Jan 2008

Catfish Consumption As A Contributor To Elevated Pcb Levels In A Non-Hispanic Black Subpopulation, Max Weintraub, Linda S. Birnbaum

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

The human body burden of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) sharply declined after production was banned in the US in 1979. For the 10% of the US population that remains most exposed to PCBs, fish consumption is the primary source. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data indicates that the highest remaining PCB levels exist in a non-Hispanic black subpopulation. Our review suggests that catfish consumption may be a significant PCB source for the one million non-Hispanic black anglers who fish for catfish. In comparison to non-Hispanic white anglers, non-Hispanic black anglers consume more catfish, are more likely to eat the …

The Affect Of The Implementation Of A Ninth Grade Academy Program On Student Achievement And Behavior, Eric Primrose

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

To combat high school transition issues, Waterloo High school implemented a Ninth Grade Academy program during the 2007-2008 school year. A number of schools across the United States are implementing similar programs, citing strong evidence from professional literature that supports such programs. Several teaching and management strategies were implemented, based on suggested strategies from the literature. To assess the success of the program, the researcher compared second marking period grades in Regents level Earth Science from the 2007-2008 school year to those from 2006-2007. The researcher also compared the number of discipline referrals and detentions during the second marking period …

Effects Of Gamma-Sterilization On The Physico-Chemical Properties Of Natural Sediments, T.L. Bank, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, A.S. Madden, M.A. Ginder-Vogel, M.E. Baldwin, P.M. Jardine Jan 2008

Effects Of Gamma-Sterilization On The Physico-Chemical Properties Of Natural Sediments, T.L. Bank, Ravi K. Kukkadapu, A.S. Madden, M.A. Ginder-Vogel, M.E. Baldwin, P.M. Jardine

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Batch U(VI) sorption/reduction experiments were completed on sterilized and non-sterilized sediment samples to elucidate biological and geochemical reduction mechanisms. Results from X-ray absorption nearedge structure (XANES) spectroscopy revealed that γ-sterilized sediments were actually better sorbents of U(VI), despite the absence of any measurable biological activity. These results indicate that γ-irradiation induced significant physico-chemical changes in the sediment which is contrary to numerous other studies identifying γ-sterilization as an effective and minimally invasive technique. To identify the extent and method of alteration of the soil as a result of γ-sterilization, untreated soil samples, physically separated size fractions, …

Population Abundance And Growth Rate Of Western Gray Whales Eschrichtius Robustus, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Paul R. Wade, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr. Jan 2008

Population Abundance And Growth Rate Of Western Gray Whales Eschrichtius Robustus, Amanda L. Bradford, David W. Weller, Paul R. Wade, Alexander M. Burdin, Robert L. Brownell Jr.

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

The western population of gray whales Eschrichtius robustus is one of the most endangered whale populations in the world. Recent studies of this population off the northeastern coast of Sakhalin Island, Russia, have produced a photographic dataset that was utilized for the first mark-recapture assessment of western gray whale abundance. Given encounter histories of 129 individually identified whales spanning 25 monthly capture occasions from 1997 to 2003, a closed capture estimator was employed to estimate the number of individuals using the study area in each year. Temporary emigration probabilities were then applied to the closed capture estimates to enumerate the …

A Kinetic Model For Growth And Biosynthesis Of Medium-Chain-Length Poly-(3-Hydroxyalkanoates) In Pseudomonas Putida, Mohamad Suffian Mohamad Annuar, Irene Kit Ping Tan, Shaliza Ibrahim, K.B. Ramachandran Jan 2008

A Kinetic Model For Growth And Biosynthesis Of Medium-Chain-Length Poly-(3-Hydroxyalkanoates) In Pseudomonas Putida, Mohamad Suffian Mohamad Annuar, Irene Kit Ping Tan, Shaliza Ibrahim, K.B. Ramachandran

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

A kinetic model is presented giving a mathematical description of batch culture of Pseudomonas putida PGA1 grown using saponified palm kernel oil as carbon source and ammonium as the limiting nutrient. The growth of the micro-organism is well-described using Tessier-type model which takes into account the inhibitory effect of ammonium at high concentrations. The ammonium consumption rate by the cells is related in proportion to the rate of growth. The intracellular production of medium-chain-length poly-(3-hydroxyalkanoates) (PHAMCL) by P. putida PGA1 cells is reasonably modeled by the modified Luedeking-Piret kinetics, which incorporate a function of product synthesis inhibition (or reduction) by …

N-Transfer Through Aspen Litter And Feather Moss Layers After Fertilization With Ammonium Nitrate And Urea, N A. Startsev, V J. Lieffers, S M. Landhausser, A Velazquez-Martinez Jan 2008

N-Transfer Through Aspen Litter And Feather Moss Layers After Fertilization With Ammonium Nitrate And Urea, N A. Startsev, V J. Lieffers, S M. Landhausser, A Velazquez-Martinez

Aspen Bibliography

When fertilizer is broadcast in boreal forest stands, the applied nutrients must pass through a thick layer of either feather moss or leaf litter which covers the forest floor. In a growth chamber experiment we tested the transfer of N through living feather moss or aspen litter when fertilized with urea ((NH2)2CO) or NH4NO3 at a rate of 100 kg ha−1 and under different watering regimes. When these organic substrates were frequently watered to excess they allowed the highest transfer of nutrients through, although 72% of the applied fertilizer was captured in the substrates. In a field experiment we also …

The Need For Integration Of Drought Monitoring Tools For Proactive Food Security Management In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tsegaye Tadesse, Menghestab Haile, Gabriel Senay, Brian D. Wardlow, Cody L. Knutson Jan 2008

The Need For Integration Of Drought Monitoring Tools For Proactive Food Security Management In Sub-Saharan Africa, Tsegaye Tadesse, Menghestab Haile, Gabriel Senay, Brian D. Wardlow, Cody L. Knutson

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Reducing the impact of drought and famine remains a challenge in sub-Saharan Africa despite ongoing drought relief assistance in recent decades. This is because drought and famine are primarily addressed through a crisis management approach when a disaster occurs, rather than stressing preparedness and risk management. Moreover, drought planning and food security efforts have been hampered by a lack of integrated drought monitoring tools, inadequate early warning systems (EWS), and insufficient information flow within and between levels of government in many sub-Saharan countries. The integration of existing drought monitoring tools for sub-Saharan Africa is essential for improving food security systems …

Alcohol use and the risk for alcohol-related problems change over the lifespan. College students and young adults, who often drink large quantities of alcohol at one time, are more likely to experience problems such as alcohol poisoning, drunk-driving crashes, and assaults; whereas, older individuals who drink even moderately while taking certain medications run the risk of harmful drug interactions. Additionally, patterns of alcohol use …

Populations Receiving Optimally Fluoridated Public Drinking Water— United States, 1992-2006 Jan 2008

Populations Receiving Optimally Fluoridated Public Drinking Water— United States, 1992-2006

United States Public Health Resources

Water fluoridation has been identified by CDC as one of 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century. The decline in the prevalence and severity of dental caries (tooth decay) in the United States during the past 60 years has been attributed largely to the increased use of fluoride. Community water fluoridation is an equitable and cost-effective method for delivering fluoride to the community. A Healthy People 2010 objective is to increase to 75% the proportion of the U.S. population served by community water systems who receive optimally fluoridated water. To update and revise previous reports on fluoridation in …

(2) How can teachers' use this study as an assessment tool in their upper elementary physical education program? This study is built upon the work of scholar James Banks. It will extend the work of James Banks by showing how his concept of changing the curriculum to integrate …

Effects Of Eutrophication On Salt Marsh Root And Rhizome Biomass Accumulation, F A. Darby, R. Eugene Turner Jan 2008

Effects Of Eutrophication On Salt Marsh Root And Rhizome Biomass Accumulation, F A. Darby, R. Eugene Turner

Faculty Publications

The root:shoot ratio of grassland plants may be lower in high fertility sites than in low fertility sites as plants modify their root, rhizome and shoot morphologies (and masses) to suit prevailing nutrient availability. We conducted geographically diverse and regionally specific field sampling and measured above- and belowground plant biomasses in western Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico salt marshes to determine whether there is a similar morphological response in Spartina alterniflora, the dominant salt marsh plant. Coastal nutrient addition/enrichment, which is widespread and ongoing, may lower root and rhizome biomass, belowground production and organic accumulation in this species. Higher soil …
