Farmer Operations Of Color And Food Based Coalitions, Guadalupe T. Luna
Farmer Operations Of Color And Food Based Coalitions, Guadalupe T. Luna
St. Thomas Law Review
Legal theorists are engaging and pursuing alternative visions directed towards building coalitions between communities of color. We are told that "coalitions are necessary in order to fully understand and attack racial hierarchy and white supremacy in the United States." This essay explores the concept of coalition building and examines whether it would be a possible method for preserving and protecting communities of color. A remarkable, heinous agricultural history has thwarted the traditional land use practices of communities of color, who have also been subject to rural subordination by widespread white supremacy. Physical manifestations of rural racial superiority curtailed the operations …

Law, Food, And Culture: Mexican Corn's National Identity Cooked In "Tortilla Discourses" Post-Tlc/Nafta, Ernesto Hernandez-Lopez
St. Thomas Law Review
With this essay, I will briefly introduce an inquiry concerning food and national cultural identity as expressed in the law. I will examine current changes in the Mexican state's public legal obligations, i.e., the law, and the production and consumption of corn, i.e., maize or maiz. These changes suggest that law, food, and culture are mutually influential in their production and consumption. The specific law examined is Mexico's corn tariff regime altered by the Tratado de Libre Comercio de America de Norte/North American Free Trade Agreement ("TLC/NAFTA"), which in the year 2008 eliminates all tariffs for corn imports from the …

Lifestyle modification is effective in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to promote healthy lifestyle behaviours to prevent cardiovascular disease. This study was a quasi-experimental trial with a follow up of two years. The intervention group (n = 102) received intensive individual and group counselling on diet and physical activity. The comparison group (n = 84) was given minimal education through mail and group counselling. Following the intervention, both groups reduced their total fat intake through a replacement in carbohydrate intake. The saturated fat and cholesterol intake was also reduced with a larger magnitude in the intervention group. …

A Comparison Of Coping Responses To Stress Among Counselor Education Students At The Beginning Stage, Practicum Stage, And Graduating Stage From Their Program Of Studies, Jill Maloney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a difference in coping responses to stress among students in a Master's level counselor education program. The study was an investigation of the difference between three nonequivalent groups: Group A- Beginning counseling students, Group B- Practicum counseling students, and Group C- Graduating counseling students. Data was obtained through a demographic sheet developed by the examiner and a self report measure. The COPE inventory was administered to 65 graduate counselor education students to assess 15 different coping styles. The study had 15 hypotheses based on the 15 scales of the …

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
On December 11, 2007, the science of mammalogy lost one of its most valued and influential leaders. Terry Lamon Yates succumbed to complications of treatments for an aggressive form of brain cancer after a brief but courageous fight. He was born on March 17, 1950, in Mayfield, Kentucky, the older son of Ellen Wanda Byrd and William Hanley Yates. Terry’s only sibling was a brother, Johnny. He is survived by his wife Nancy Fennell Yates, his two sons, Brian Christopher and Michael Ryan, and daughter-in-law Laura Manchéno Macia.

Estimation Of The Lysine Requirements For High-Lean Growth Pigs, Phillip S. Miller, Roman Moreno, Thomas E. Burkey, Rodger K. Johnson
Nebraska Swine Reports
An experiment was conducted to determine the lysine regime required to maximize growth performance for high-lean-growth potential barrows and gilts beginning at 45 lb and concluding at approximately 260 lb. There were four growing-finishing phases and four lys treatments within phase (Grower-1, 44 lb to 79 lb; Grower-2 79 lb to 132 lb; Finisher-1, 132 lb to 189 lb; and Finisher-2, 1891b to 260 lb). Dietary treatments were corn-soybean meal based supplemented with 0.15% crystalline lysine. The formulation of 2 dietary treatments was aimed to provide lysine below the requirement, while the other 2 dietary treatments provided lys above the …

Dietary Fiber In Sow Gestation Diets - An Updated Review, Duane Reese, Allen Prosch, Daryl A. Travnicek, Kent M. Eskridge
Nebraska Swine Reports
Twenty-four published reports dating from 1975 to 2007 were examined to determine the overall effects of feeding gestation sows additional fiber. Sow and litter traits among trials were weighted by the number of litters for each treatment within each trial. Overall, sows can successfully consume high-fiber diets during gestation with few deleterious effects. Positive effects from feeding high-fiber diets were evident in litter size (0.2 to 0.6 pigs/litter) and sow lactation feed intake (0.5 to 0.8 lb/day), but they are not largely evident until the second reproductive cycle following exposure to the diet. It's possible that to ensure sow and …

Nebraska Swine Reports
Gilts of two genetic lines were developed with either ad libitum access to feed or energy restriction (75% of ad libitum) to determine effects on subsequent sow performance and longevity. Gilts can be developed with regimens in which energy is restricted during the growing period but the proportion that express pubertal estrus may be reduced in leaner, faster growing lines. Effects on subsequent farrowing rates are small. Sow weight and buckfat at farrowing and weaning of Parity 1 litters affect the likelihood of producing a Parity 2 litter, but these effects are dependent on lean growth rate of the line …

Panhandle Research and Extension Center
A 167-d feedlot study was conducted to evaluate feeding increasing levels of dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS) to finishing cattle and the impact on performance and profitability. Crossbred steer calves (n = 240, BW = 306 ± 24.5 kg) were used in 30 pens with dietary treatments of 0, 10, 20, 30, and 40% DDGS dietary inclusion (DM basis). Quadratic relationships (P < 0.05) were observed for final BW and ADG as dietary DDGS increased, with the greatest ADG observed at 20% inclusion. The DMI was not affected (P > 0.15) by DDGS level, but G:F tended to be quadratic (P = 0.10) as 20% DM inclusion had the greatest value, although steers fed all levels of DDGS had numerically greater G:F compared with steers fed no …

Conformational Changes And Flexibility In T-Cell Receptor Recognition Of Peptide–Mhc Complexes, Kathryn M. Armstrong, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian M. Baker
Conformational Changes And Flexibility In T-Cell Receptor Recognition Of Peptide–Mhc Complexes, Kathryn M. Armstrong, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Brian M. Baker
Food for Health: Publications
A necessary feature of the immune system, TCR (T-cell receptor) cross-reactivity has been implicated in numerous autoimmune pathologies and is an underlying cause of transplant rejection. Early studies of the interactions of αβ TCRs (T-cell receptors) with their peptide–MHC ligands suggested that conformational plasticity in the TCR CDR (complementarity determining region) loops is a dominant contributor to T-cell cross-reactivity. Since these initial studies, the database of TCRs whose structures have been solved both bound and free is now large enough to permit general conclusions to be drawn about the extent of TCR plasticity and the types and locations of motion …
