Supporting Early Literacy Through Attachment-Based Parenting: An Intervention Project, Maureen Louise Stine

Theses Digitization Project

A Four-month intervention project consisting of regular parent training meetings and weekly take-home parent-child interactive literacy activities was implemented to examine the association between quality of mother-child interaction and preschoolers' early literacy development for five families enrolled in a state subsidized preschool program. The Palm Vista Family Home Literacy Program located in the high desert region of San Bernardino County was offered free of charge to all parents and their preschool aged children who were enrolled.

Juvenile-To-Adult Antler Development In White-Tailed Deer In South Texas, James Kroll, Ben Koerth Jan 2008

Juvenile-To-Adult Antler Development In White-Tailed Deer In South Texas, James Kroll, Ben Koerth

Faculty Publications

Past studies using penned deer provide conflicting results on the age when reliable predictions about antler growth potential in white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) can be made. We captured wild whitetail males via aerial net gun on 12 ranches in 5 counties in south Texas, USA, from 1999 to 2007 to determine if a reliable juvenile-to-adult relationship in antler development existed. We individually marked and released captured animals at the trap site after we took antler and body measurements. We recaptured marked animals as possible in subsequent years or until we obtained final measurements after legal harvest. Amount of growth in …

Change In Availability And Nutritional Quality Of Postharvest Waste Corn On Waterfowl Staging Areas Near Long Point, Ontario, Edward Sydney Barney Jan 2008

Change In Availability And Nutritional Quality Of Postharvest Waste Corn On Waterfowl Staging Areas Near Long Point, Ontario, Edward Sydney Barney

Digitized Theses

Increase in harvester efficiency has raised concern that there has been a decrease in the quantity of waste corn available for waterfowl staging in northern areas. I conducted this study to evaluate seasonal changes in waste corn availability and nutritional quality, as well as field use by waterfowl near Long Point, Ontario. I found significant decreases in both waste corn density and nutritional quality between fall (initial) and spring (final) sampling periods. Waterfowl use of fields was not related to initial waste corn abundance; birds used fields based on physical characteristics. Currently, waste corn densities are potentially limiting to waterfowl …

Does Menopausal Status Influence Sexual Risk? A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The U.S. National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Jessica Marie Armstrong Jan 2008

Does Menopausal Status Influence Sexual Risk? A Cross-Sectional Analysis Of The U.S. National Health And Nutrition Examination Survey, Jessica Marie Armstrong

Digitized Theses

Middle-aged and older adults remain sexually active, but the combination of sexual longevity, inconsistent safe sex practices, and poor condom knowledge, increases their likelihood to risk their sexual health. Menopause may influence sexual risk, as postmenopausal women may engage in risky sexual behaviours, while hormonal changes increase physiological vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections. This project explored whether menopause and type of post-menopause (natural versus surgically- induced) influenced sexual behaviour and herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) seroprevalence, using logistic regression modeling of the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data. Controlling for confounding, menopause was negatively associated with number …

Roman Dietetics, Monika K. Urbanski Jan 2008

Roman Dietetics, Monika K. Urbanski

Digitized Theses

Various sectors of Roman society ate differently. Wealthy men were virtually unrestrained in making food selections, choosing freely from all of the foods around the Mediterranean. The available array thus enabled the elite to meet and surpass the nutritional guidelines of today's World Health Organization to the extent that they may have even been subject to problems of overnutrition. The lower classes are typically assumed to have been malnourished. On the contrary, the abundance of cereals and legumes they consumed would have provided them with most essential nutrients. Lower classes would also have deliberately sought out meat and fish products …

Extraction And Recovery Of The 7s And 11s Soy Proteins Using The Liquid-Solid Circulating Fluidized Bed (Lscfb) Ion Exchange System, Robert William Galloway

Digitized Theses

Although soybeans have been used in Eastern Asia for the past 2000 years, only recently have they become a key global commodity and agricultural crop. Soybeans are a versatile crop. They have been shown to have a high protein content, high nutritional value and functionality, and have many applications in medical and food industries. The current soy protein market has need of a high quality soy protein which can be used in many protein and food products. Cunent soy protein production methods such as alcohol dehydration and acid precipitation use harsh materials and conditions to extract and recover the protein. …

Espousing Interactions And Fielding Reactions: Addressing Laypeople's Beliefs About Genetic Determinism, David S. Moore Jan 2008

Espousing Interactions And Fielding Reactions: Addressing Laypeople's Beliefs About Genetic Determinism, David S. Moore

Pitzer Faculty Publications and Research

Although biologists and philosophers of science generally agree that genes cannot determine the forms of biological and psychological traits, students, journalists, politicians, and other members of the general public nonetheless continue to embrace genetic determinism. This article identifies some of the concerns typically raised by individuals when they first encounter the systems perspective that biologists and philosophers of science now favor over genetic determinism, and uses arguments informed by that perspective to address those concerns. No definitive statements can yet be made about why genetic determinism has proven so resilient in the face of empirical evidence pointing up its deficiencies, …

Adaptive Technology Catalog, Cisr Jan 2008

Adaptive Technology Catalog, Cisr

CISR Studies and Reports

By design, the purpose of this Adaptive Technology Catalog is to provide a resource for governments, survivor-assistance and other agencies to help victims of landmines and other explosive remnants of war (ERW) and other disabled workers get back to self-sufficiency and paid work.

Landmine and ERW injuries have a devastating impact on the economic security of individuals, families and communities. Most often, these circumstances exist in countries that lack the basic social welfare infrastructure that might otherwise keep this at-risk population from poverty.

Designing, developing and identifying simple and inexpensive tools and programs that assist with survivor work reintegration is …

Epistemological Pluralism: Reorganizing Interdisciplinary Research, Thaddeus R. Miller, Timothy D. Baird, Caitlin M. Littlefield, Gary Kofinas, F. Stuart Chapin, Iii, Charles L. Redman

All UNF Research

Despite progress in interdisciplinary research, difficulties remain. In this paper, we argue that scholars, educators, and practitioners need to critically rethink the ways in which interdisciplinary research and training are conducted. We present epistemological pluralism as an approach for conducting innovative, collaborative research and study. Epistemological pluralism recognizes that, in any given research context, there may be several valuable ways of knowing, and that accommodating this plurality can lead to more successful integrated study. This approach is particularly useful in the study and management of social–ecological systems. Through resilience theory's adaptive cycle, we demonstrate how a focus on epistemological pluralism …

Design Of A Microscopy-Based Screening Method For Stomatal Development Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Mercedes Tatiana Quinteros Perez Jan 2008

Design Of A Microscopy-Based Screening Method For Stomatal Development Genes In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Mercedes Tatiana Quinteros Perez

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Stomata are microscopic pores in the epidermis of plants that regulate gas exchange and transpiration. Regulation of stomatal behavior offers opportunity for crop improvement; stomata are also useful for research into cell patterning, differentiation, and development. The purpose of this project was to create a reverse genetics, microscopy-based screening method to identify Arabidopsis genes important in guard cell development. It was hypothesized that gene coexpression analysis would facilitate identification of gene candidates involved in stomatal development. Plants harboring mutations in the candidate genes were analyzed to detect a stomatal phenotype, using dental resin impressions and light microscopy. Coexpression screening was …

A Wasting Syndrome In Released Whooping Cranes In Florida Associated With Infectious Bursal Disease Titers, Marilyn G. Spalding, Holly S. Sellers, Barry K. Hartup, Glenn H. Olsen Jan 2008

A Wasting Syndrome In Released Whooping Cranes In Florida Associated With Infectious Bursal Disease Titers, Marilyn G. Spalding, Holly S. Sellers, Barry K. Hartup, Glenn H. Olsen

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

Whooping cranes (Grus americana) have been reintroduced into central Florida beginning in 1993 until the present. Bobcat predation of otherwise healthy cranes in good nutritional condition was the most common cause of mortality. However, release cohorts in the years 1997-1998 (14/22 died) and 2001-2002 (14/27 died, 5/27 clinical illness) experienced unusually high morbidity and mortality. Positive serum neutralizing titers for infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) were identified following the 2001 event, and an epidemiological study of released birds and the captive source flocks was initiated. Serotype 1 (Lukert and Variant A) tests were mostly negative. Serotype 2 testing …

Interaction Of Young Florida Sandhill Cranes With Their Parents, Stephen A. Nesbitt, Paul S. Kubilis, Stephen T. Schwikert Jan 2008

Interaction Of Young Florida Sandhill Cranes With Their Parents, Stephen A. Nesbitt, Paul S. Kubilis, Stephen T. Schwikert

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

We studied the interactions of 46 Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis) chicks and their parents from hatching until the chicks left the family group. Our goal was to see if young remained closer to one parent than the other and if the distance between a chick and its parents increased as the young approached the age of independence. Using a population of individually marked adult pairs, we ranked the distance to and gender of the nearest parent during 233 30-minute observation periods. Between hatching and 180 days of age, chicks showed a greater tendency to be nearer …

West Nile Encephalitis In A Captive Florida Sandhill Crane, Cristina M. Hansen, Barry K. Hartup, Olga D. Gonzalez, Douglas E. Lyman, Howard Steinberg

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

A 37 year old captive male Florida sandhill crane (Grus canadensis pratensis) housed at the International Crane Foundation exhibited abnormal neurologic signs in the fall of 2006. Despite therapy and supportive care, the neurologic signs worsened and the crane was euthanized after 6 days. Antemortem and postmortem serum was positive for flavivirus antibody, and a cloacal swab was positive for West Nile virus (WNV) by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). Pectoral muscle atrophy and multifocal myocardial necrosis were observed at necropsy. Histopathologic findings included inflammatory and necrotic lesions in sections of brain, spinal cord, eye, heart, blood …

A Study Of Resiliency In African-American Middle School Boys, Andrea Celico

ETD Archive

While our nation claims that we provide "equal learning opportunities" for all, the Black-White achievement gap still exists. This leads to a variety of political, economic, and social ramifications for our students. With this said, seldom are studies conducted that disprove the countless theories that explain why African-American students are at-risk for academic success. As an attempt to determine environmental factors that contribute to the achievement gap between African-American and Caucasian students, it is important to gain a greater understanding of how academically successful African-American students have managed to translate their struggles and experiences of oppression into academic success (Griffin …
