Designing And Implementing A Backup And Recovery System For Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service, Wesley G. Justice Jan 2008

Designing And Implementing A Backup And Recovery System For Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service, Wesley G. Justice

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project proposes the development and proof of concept implementation of a comprehensive backup and recovery plan for Kentucky's Cooperative Extension Service. Currently, no standardized backup system is in place. Each CES office location contains between five and forty Windows based workstations and at least one server, and backup methods vary from office to office. Current backup processes are inadequate in several key areas. To ensure the availability and integrity of mission critical data, the goal of this project is the analysis, design, and implementation of a standardized backup and recovery plan. The project will consider multiple hardware and software …

Nitrogen And Media Assessment For First-Year Pot-In-Pot Production Of Container And Bare Root Liners In The Intermountain West, Jaydee Gunnell, Paul R. Grossl, Roger Kjelgren

CWEL Publications

We investigated optimum nitrogen rates and different growth substrates for short-term fi nish production of container and bare root shade tree liners in a pot-in-pot production system in the Intermountain West. In one study, nitrogen ranging from 0–27 g N·tree–1(0–36 lbs N·1000 ft–2) as urea was applied to quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides), ‘Autumn Blaze’ maple (Acer × freemannii ‘Autumn Blaze’), ‘Chanticleer’ flowering pear (Pyrus calleryana ‘Chanticleer’), and ‘Canada Red’ chokecherry (Prunus virginiana ‘Canada Red’). Twenty-six liter liners (#7 container) were transplanted into 57 liter (#15) containers in a retail nursery finishing pot-in-pot system. Trunk diameter growth and shoot-tip elongation measurements …

Marginalized Students' Perspectives Of School Consolidation: A Case Study In Rural West Virginia, Betty A. Sias Jan 2008

Marginalized Students' Perspectives Of School Consolidation: A Case Study In Rural West Virginia, Betty A. Sias

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

While prior research provides evidence that school consolidation impacts student achievement, the economic efficiency at state and district levels, dropout rates, participation in extracurricular activities, curriculum offerings, and the length of bus rides, “little is known about what happens in consolidated schools to impact student learning,” (Blake, 2003, p. 21) and little attention has been given to studying students’ lived experiences of consolidation. This qualitative case study explored these issues by attempting to understand students’ transition to a consolidated high school, as well as their current experiences with and perceptions of consolidation in a rural community in West Virginia. The …

Perspectives About Occupational Justice: Can Poverty And Occupational Deprivation Influence Child Development?, Barbara P. White Otr/L, Ph.D., Sajay Arthanat, Elizabeth L. Crepeau

The University Dialogue

In this paper we will explore the concept of occupational justice, a term that describes a basic human right to have the opportunities and rights to participate in those activities and occupations that define us as individuals, family and community members by providing meaning and purpose to our lives. Conditions of poverty preclude the ability to participate in a wide range of activities and occupations that support well-being. An anticipated outcome of our paper is to explore how poverty negatively influences engagement in those activities and occupations that support health, productivity and life satisfaction.

A Survey Of Registered Dietitians' Perceptions Of Constructivist And Behaviorist Instructional Approaches And Delivery Methods In Accredited Dietetics Programs, Martha A. Smith

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This purpose of this research study was to test learning theories and models of teaching (constructivist vs. behaviorist) used in dietetic education programs. Additionally, the focus of accreditation for dietetics education is the quality and integrity of a program regardless of its instructional delivery method. Therefore, this study examined the variations between on-line and on-campus delivery methods.

Research questions that guided this study included:

1) To what extent do educators use constructivist or behaviorist theoretical approaches during instructional delivery?

2) What are the differences in learning between on-line education and oncampus delivery methods?

3) As far as constructivist and behaviorist …

From Individuals To Ecosystem Function: Toward An Integration Of Evolutionary And Ecosystem Ecology, Oswald J. Schmitz, Jonathan H. Garbowski, Barbara L. Peckarsky, Evan L. Preisser, Geoffrey C. Trussell, James R. Vonesh

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

An important goal in ecology is developing general theory on how the species composition of ecosystems is related to ecosystem properties and functions. Progress on this front is limited partly because of the need to identify mechanisms controlling functions that are common to a wide range of ecosystem types. We propose that one general mechanism, rooted in the evolutionary ecology of all species, is adaptive foraging behavior in response to predation risk. To support our claim, we present two kinds of empirical evidence from plant‐based and detritus‐based food chains of terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The first kind comes from experiments …

Sizing Things Up: The Effects Of Weight On The Evaluation Of Job Candidates, Frances L.M. Smith Jan 2008

Sizing Things Up: The Effects Of Weight On The Evaluation Of Job Candidates, Frances L.M. Smith

Iowa Journal of Communication

Previous research has shown that job applicants may be discriminated against in hiring practices due to appearance. The purpose of this study is to determine if discrimination will occur against overweight job applicants who are applying for highly visible and communicative jobs. Attribution theory may explain negative attitudes toward overweight individuals in the workplace. In order to determine if negative attributes would be given to overweight job applicants, a between-subjects experimental design was used for this study. Results showed that participants did not rate the overweight job applicant lower than the average-weight applicant on communication or personality characteristics. Participants did …

Autoethnography As Vessel: Energy As Communicative Praxis, Amber Lynn Zimmerman

Iowa Journal of Communication

In this article, I engage the concept of energy, as rhythms of consciousness, through dreams, empathic knowing, and the healing power of narrative. Energetic content and autoethnographic form are intimately intertwined in this work, as method becomes vessel for opening and creating experiences of enlightenment. The act of writing emerges as a rhythm of consciousness in and of itself and has the potential to generate new ground for thinking, being, and visioning what is possible in our interactions and our scholarship.

Where's The Kale? Environmental Availability Of Fruits And Vegetables In Two Racially Dissimilar Communities, Edith M. Williams, Bamidele O. Tayo, Beverly Marie Mclean, Ellen Smit, Christopher T. Sempos, Carlos J. Crespo

Community Health Faculty Publications and Presentations

Minority communities across the United States have limited numbers of stores that offer a variety of fruits and vegetables, creating major barriers to good eating habits and nutritional practices among minority groups such as African Americans. Factors like environmental availability of healthy food options have not been fully investigated as possible sources of current cross-population differences in disease. The present study examined whether a predominantly African American neighborhood had disproportionately less availability of fruits and vegetables than a predominantly non-Hispanic White neighborhood. Availability was judged on the bases of the types of stores available in each community and the specific …

The Future Of Privacy Policies: A Privacy Nutrition Label Filled With Fair Information Practices, 26 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 1 (2008), Corey A. Ciocchetti

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

The article looks at the threats accompanying online shopping, such as identity theft and aggregated data files. Such issues arise when companies carelessly lose laptops filled with unencrypted data or callously sell data on the open market with collected personally identifying information (PII). The article explains that although privacy policies are supposed to force companies to strengthen their privacy practices they are not always effective because companies often post inconspicuous, vague and legalese-filled policies. These ambiguous postings cause online shoppers to blindly submit PII and ignore privacy practices completely. The article proposes a solution to this problem through the standardization …

Effects Of A Supplement Designed To Increase Atp Levels On Muscle Strength, Power Output, And Endurance, Trent J. Herda, Eric D. Ryan, Jeffrey R. Stout, Joel T. Cramer

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Background: The present study examined the acute effects of a nutritional supplement intended to improve adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentrations on vertical jump height, isometric strength of the leg extensors, leg extension endurance, and forearm flexion endurance.

Methods: Twenty-four healthy men (mean age ± SD = 23 ± 4 yrs, stature = 181 ± 7 cm, and body mass = 82 ± 12 kg) volunteered to complete a familiarization trial plus 2 randomly-ordered experimental trials separated by a 7-day washout period. Participants received either 6 (body mass < 91 kg) or 8 (body mass ≥ 91 kg) tablets of the treatment (TR; 625 mg of adenylpyrophosphoric acid and calcium pyruvate, 350.8 mg of cordyceps sinensis extract and yohimbine hydrochloride) or placebo (PL; 980 mg of microcrystalline cellulose) 1 hour prior to the following tests: countermovement vertical jump (CVJ), forearm flexion repetitions to exhaustion, isometric maximal voluntary contractions (MVCs) of the leg extensors, and a 50-repetition maximal concentric isokinetic leg extension endurance test.

Results: There were no differences between the TR and PL trials for CVJ height …

Bioecology Of The New Invasive Fruit Fly Bactrocera Invadens (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Kenya And Its Interaction With Indigenous Mango-Infesting Fruit Fly Species, Ivan Rwomushana Jan 2008

Bioecology Of The New Invasive Fruit Fly Bactrocera Invadens (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Kenya And Its Interaction With Indigenous Mango-Infesting Fruit Fly Species, Ivan Rwomushana

All PhD Dissertations

Bactrocera invadens Drew, Tsuruta & White (Diptera: Tephritidae), an alien invasive fruit fly species of Asian origin was first detected in Kenya in 2003. This pest has rapidly spread across sub-Saharan Africa and is currently reported from at least 24 countries. Because of its novelty status, there was no information on its biology and ecology that could aid development of management efforts. There was also evidence that B. invadens eo-infested the same fruits with native fruit fly species and it was speculated that this could result in competitive displacement of native fruit flies. This study, therefore, was initiated to establish …

Engine Performance Test Of Cottonseed Oil Biodiesel, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen, Daniel P. Geller, Peter J. Wan Jan 2008

Engine Performance Test Of Cottonseed Oil Biodiesel, Xiaohu Fan, Xi Wang, Feng Chen, Daniel P. Geller, Peter J. Wan

Publications

Two cottonseed oil biodiesel samples (cottonseed oil methyl esters, COME) produced in Clemson lab, together with other two commercial cottonseed oil biodiesels were evaluated on their engine performance with the No. 2 diesel fuel as a reference. The results revealed that emission of CO, CO2 and NOx from cottonseed oil biodiesels was lower than that of the No. 2 diesel fuel. CO decreased by 13.8%, CO2 by 11.1% and NOx by 10%, though there was no significantly statistical difference at p<0.05. The engine test also showed a slightly higher amount of consumption and less tendency of coke formation from COME than the No. 2 diesel fuel. The oxidative stability study showed COME with acceptable stability. COME exhibited friendly environmental benefits and acceptable stability, demonstrating its feasibility as an alternative fuel.
