Current Health And Environmental Status Of The Maasai People In Sub-Saharan Africa, Ruth Brady, Sara Suksiri, Stella Tan, John Dodds, David Aine

Honors Undergraduate Research Journal

As time passes, the AIDS pandemic continues to spike, affecting an estimated 38.6 million people worldwide. In response, a satellite health clinic is being designed by two Cal Poly students to serve the Maasai people living in the Kajiado district in Southern Kenya. The Maasai have traditionally lived as pastoralists, surviving off of their cattle with which they share their water, increasing the risk for contamination. However, as the population of Kenya increases, the land the Maasai have traditionally used for grazing is shrinking. For this reason, some have turned to farming to maintain their livelihood. These factors have contributed …

Myactivity Pyramid, Stephen D. Ball, Ellen Schuster, Robin Gammon

Journal of Extension

In 2006, University of Missouri Extension released the MyActivity Pyramid, a new conceptual model (graphic) that parallels the USDA's MyPyramid. The new pyramid is a tool designed to help youth accumulate the necessary amounts and variety of activity. The MyActivity Pyramid is intended for use with youth ages 6-11. The MyActivity Pyramid also attempts to classify activities into four categories: 1) Everyday Activities, 2) Active Aerobics, 3) Flexibility and Strength, and 4) Inactivity. Recommendations for the amounts of each category are given. The MyActivity Pyramid was piloted with over 250 youth ages 6-11 in rural and urban areas throughout Missouri.

How To Ascertain The Impact Of Writing A Newspaper Column, Mary R. Ehret, Nancy Ellen Kiernan Jun 2008

How To Ascertain The Impact Of Writing A Newspaper Column, Mary R. Ehret, Nancy Ellen Kiernan

Journal of Extension

Shrinking resources and the need to know the impact of programs require Extension to identify an effective means for reaching large audiences with research-based information. Media-focused programming such as writing newspaper columns is a delivery method used by Extension, although there is little evidence of its effectiveness in the evaluation literature. A creative evaluation of the Sunday Dispatch news column identified behavior changes made by readers, indicting that a non-face-to-face delivery method can be successful in influencing large audiences.

Background. Weight gain in adulthood is now common in many populations, ranging from modest gains in developing countries to a substantial percentage of body weight in some Western societies. To examine the rate of change across the spectrum of low to high-income countries we compared rates of weight change in samples drawn from three countries, Nigeria, Jamaica and the United States. Methods. Population samples from Nigeria (n = 1,242), Jamaica (n = 1,409), and the US (n = 809) were selected during the period 1995-1999 in adults over the age of 19; participation rates in the original survey were 96%, …

Relationship Of Vo2 Peak, Body Fat Percentage, And Power Output Measured During Repeated Bouts Of A Wingate Protocol, John R. Mclester‡, J. Matthew Green‡, P. Jason Wickwire†, Thaddeus R. Crews‡

International Journal of Exercise Science

The principle of specificity would indicate that being aerobically trained would not necessarily enhance performance in events relying principally on oxygen-independent metabolic pathways (i.e. “anaerobic” exercise). Body fatness may be associated with aerobic and anaerobic performance. VO2 Peak was determined with a graded cycle ergometry and, in a separate session 4 consecutive Wingate power tests (3 min recovery) in 31 males. Pearson correlations were calculated for VO2 Peak and Body Fat Percentage with Peak Power, Mean Power, Minimum Power, Fatigue Index, Peak Heart Rate, and Recovery Heart Rate. No significant correlations were found for VO2 Peak or Body Fat Percentage …

Faculty Publications

This review article examines the progress and impact of the Journal of Family and Economic Issues (JFEI) between 1988–2007. Over the past 20 years, JFEI has become a major journal publishing articles on the relationship between families and economic systems. JFEIcontributed to both the economic and family studies disciplines by publishing articles that explore the interface of these two disciplines. Between 1988 and 2007, JFEI published articles on a variety of themes not often found in other economic or family studies journals such as family resource management, consumer attitudes and behaviors, and economic issues and family relationships. Other unique …

Identifying Patients With Cancer At Risk Of Experiencing A Fall While Hospitalized, Joann M. Heaton May 2008

Identifying Patients With Cancer At Risk Of Experiencing A Fall While Hospitalized, Joann M. Heaton

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Inpatient falls are the most reported incidents in the acute care setting. Symptoms associated with a diagnosis of cancer and treatment may increase risk for falls. The objectives of this study were to identify the risk factors, and the most common risk factors, of adult patients with cancer who fell while hospitalized. A retrospective, matched, case-control audit of electronic medical records and occurrence reports was conducted for 30 patients who fell and 30 patients who did not fall while under the care of the inpatient oncology unit in a community hospital. Fall subjects and controls were matched by cancer diagnosis …

The Impact Of Being Born With Cleft And Cleft Reparative Surgery On Overall Health And Speech Outcomes, Khatansuudal Evsanaa

Master's Theses

Orofacial cleft is one of the most common and treatable birth defects in the world. If left untreated, orofacial cleft can impair normal speech development, growth, and could lead to a number of health consequences later in life. The main motivation of the study is to measure the impact of being born with cleft and the cleft reparative surgery on overall speech and health cleft for teenagers in India using difference-in-differences approach along with household fixed effects method. An overall health outcome was measured using height, weight, grip strength and BMI, and the speech acceptability was measured using a “Universal …

Association Of Fat Oxidation And Insulin Resistance In Prepubertal Children, Connie Vanvrancken Tompkins May 2008

Association Of Fat Oxidation And Insulin Resistance In Prepubertal Children, Connie Vanvrancken Tompkins

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Identifying the relationship between fat oxidation and insulin resistance (IR) may provide vital clues to the mechanisms behind the development of metabolic disease in prepubertal children. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of fat oxidation with insulin resistance (IR) and insulin sensitivity (SI) in prepubertal children. A total of 34 prepubertal 7-9 year olds (18 females, 16 males, 13 non-Caucasian, 21 Caucasian, 8.0±0.8 years, 36.5±12.1 kg) were observed. Subjects participated in indirect calorimetry to obtain respiratory quotient (RQ) and a blood test to obtain fasting insulin and glucose to calculate IR by homeostatic model assessment (HOMA). …

Post-Translational Regulation Of Plant Fatty Acid Desaturases As Expressed In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Linda Bourassa May 2008

Post-Translational Regulation Of Plant Fatty Acid Desaturases As Expressed In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Linda Bourassa

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Differences have been shown in the steady-state accumulation and half-lives between Brassica FAD3 (BF3) and tung FAD3 (TF3) proteins expressed in yeast cells cultured at 30°C. TF3 has a greater steady-state accumulation and longer half-life than BF3. These differences are attributed to post-translational modification and have been shown to be controlled by an Nterminal element. I attempted to determine specific amino acids important for regulation, and further characterize the mechanism contributing to the differences. Through site-directed mutagenesis, it was shown that replacing lysine residues with asparagines in the BF3 and TF3 Ntermini increased protein stability, while replacing an asparagine with …

The Characterization Of Soil Properties To Develop “Soil Management/Mapping Units” Using High-Resolution Remotely Sensed Data Sets, D. Keith Morris, Kenton W. Ross, Christian J. Johannsen

Journal of Terrestrial Observation

The intent of this research was to assess the possible use of high resolution remotely sensed hyperspectral and multispectral data to characterize soil types, specifically focusing on organic matter content, in an associative manner with the results obtained from traditional Order 1 and Order 2 soil surveys. A chi-square analysis indicated a strong association between soil type and organic matter content. A Cramer’s V analysis (of a supervised classification) indicated a stronger relationship between the Order 1 and organic matter. However, when an unsupervised classification scheme was applied to the aerial imagery, again using Cramer’s analysis, the Order 2 out-performed …

Recognizing Patterns Within Cropland Vegetation: A Crop Anomaly Classification System, Paul G. Carter, Christian J. Johannsen, Bernard A. Engel

Journal of Terrestrial Observation

The framework for a national classification system for agricultural cropland anomalies utilizing remote sensing information is presented. Cropland anomalies in Midwest USA have been identified in field crops of corn (Zea mays), soybeans (Glycine max), wheat (Triticum), and miscellaneous hay crops such as alfalfa (Medicago sativa). By identifying cropland anomalies through ground observations and describing the characteristics associated with them, it is possible to group them according to common casual properties such as water, nutrition, weeds, insects, disease, and management, leading to the development of a Cropland Anomaly Classification System. This system advances understanding of specific anomalies and provides an …

Symposium Of University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE)

This year represents the thirteenth year of annual multidisciplinary conferences dedicated to student scholarship at Central Washington University. In 1996, CWU sponsored the first Undergraduate Research Symposium, a showcase of faculty-mentored undergraduate student research. This event was an innovative forum for developing student scholarship that gained attention far beyond CWU. Since 1996, the undergraduate symposium expanded to include other student scholarly activity, and the broader scope was reflected in a new name in 1998, the Symposium on Undergraduate Research and Creative Expression, commonly referred to as SOURCE.
