Editorial: Foreign Women In Prison, Biko Agozino Jun 2008

Editorial: Foreign Women In Prison, Biko Agozino

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

The imprisonment of women worldwide has always been a controversial issue. This is partly because women do not end up in prison as frequently as men and so discussions of prison populations most often focus on the experiences of male prisoners. Therefore, any attempt to focus attention on the experiences of female prisoners raises questions in the minds of most scholars as to whether the conditions of women in prison are harsh enough compared to male prisons and whether we should not be focusing on the more severe conditions in male prisons? However, the rate of increase of female prisoners …

Hiv/Aids, Crime And Security In Southern Africa, Bruno Meini

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

HIV/AIDS, crime, security and governance are linked issues in the region of Southern Africa. According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and World Health Organisation (WHO), sub-Saharan Africa is home to approximately 10 percent of the world’s population and 2/3 of this population is infected with HIV. Within sub- Saharan Africa, Southern Africa remains the world’s most affected region: globally, 32% of people with HIV live in this sub-region and 34% of AIDS deaths occur within this region as well. Infection rates in Southern Africa indicate that huge numbers of people will die over the next 10 …

Gregarines On A Diet: The Effects Of Host Starvation On Gregarina Confusa Janovy Et Al., 2007 (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) In Tribolium Destructor Uyttenboogaart, 1933 (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) Larvae, Jodi Schreurs, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

This study was designed to explore the nutritional relationship between Gregarina confusa (Apicomplexa: Eugregarinida) parasites and its coleopteran host, Tribolium destructor, by measuring the cytoplasmic density of gregarines in continuously fed larvae, starved larvae, and larvae refed after starvation. Cultures were maintained in a standard media (whole wheat flour:commercial wheat germ:yeast [30:10:1]). Larvae from control and experimental groups were dissected daily for three days then allowed to feed or starve for an additional three days. On day 6, the remaining experimental larvae were divided and placed into two groups; one group remained starved while larvae from the second group …

Mitochondria In Energy-Limited States: Mechanisms That Blunt The Signaling Of Cell Death, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze Jun 2008

Mitochondria In Energy-Limited States: Mechanisms That Blunt The Signaling Of Cell Death, Steven C. Hand, Michael A. Menze

Faculty Publications

Cellular conditions experienced during energy-limited states - elevated calcium, shifts in cellular adenylate status, compromised mitochondrial membrane potential - are precisely those that trigger, at least in mammals, the mitochondrion to initiate opening of the permeability transition pore, to assemble additional protein release channels, and to release pro-apoptotic factors. These proapototic factors in turn activate initiator and executer caspases. How is activation of mitochondria-based pathways for the signaling of apoptotic and necrotic cell death avoided under conditions of hypoxia, anoxia, diapause, estivation and anhydrobiosis? Functional trade-offs in environmental tolerance may have occurred in parallel with the evolution of diversified pathways …

Preparation Of Botanical Samples For Biomedical Research, Zhijun Liu Jun 2008

Preparation Of Botanical Samples For Biomedical Research, Zhijun Liu

Faculty Publications

Plants are chemical storehouses, a fact which has driven countless multidisciplinary quests for bioactive compounds. As the very first step of botanical research, the whole desire is to find "hit" plants with specific bioactivities. It is logical to use some strategies that can maximize the chances of finding these "hits" with limited time and resources. In addition to selecting the right plants for screening, how the plant extracts are prepared can also influence the bioactivity screening outcomes. An extract from the same plant material can be quite different in chemical composition having different preparations. Because of the complex mixture nature …

In Vitro Micropropagation Of Talinum Portulacifolium L. Through Axillary Bud Culture, K. Thangavel Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present study describes a protocol for rapid and large scale in vitro micropropagation of Talinum portulacifolium L. through axillary bud culture. The culture medium was optimized for propagation and high ex vitro survival rate was achieved. MS medium supplemented with 6µM BAP and 2µM IAA in combination was shown a better efficiency of shoot proliferation. Maximum of 8 new shoots were developed from a single explant (axillary bud) after 3 subcultures (subculture interval 15 days). Root development was facilitated by MS medium supplemented with both IBA (4µM) and NAA(1µM). Well rooted and partially acclimatized plantlets were transferred into poly …

Free Radical Scavenging Activity Of Folklore: Pithecellobium Dulce Benth. Leaves, M. Sugumaran, T. Vetrichelvan, S. Darlin Quine

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

In the present study, the aqueous and alcoholic extract of Pithecellobium dulce leaves were evaluated for radical scavenging activity using reducing power assay method. Aqueous extract showed potent free radical scavenging activity, than alcohol extract. The observed activity could be due to higher phenolic content in the extracts (0.2171& 0.2042 mg/g in aqueous and alcohol extract respectively). HPTLC fingerprint profile of the ethanol and aqueous extracts were developed which would serve as reference standard for quality control of these extracts

Financing Long-Term Care In Missouri: Limits And Changes In The Wake Of The Deficit Reduction Act Of 2005, Julia M. Hargraves Jun 2008

Financing Long-Term Care In Missouri: Limits And Changes In The Wake Of The Deficit Reduction Act Of 2005, Julia M. Hargraves

Missouri Law Review

The expense of long-term care, intensified by an aging population, has contributed to a nationwide financial strain on the Medicaid program, complicating the already difficult tasks of medical and fiscal planning for the elderly. Missouri's elderly population is substantial, the state having ranked 14d' in the country for the number of residents over age 65 in 2000. These senior citizens face the prospect of paying for long-term care, and many of them will rely on Medicaid for all or part of the cost. Medicaid is the primary taxpayer-funded program that finances long-term care. Current projections suggest that the cost of …

When The Flock Ignores The Shepherd-Corralling The Undisclosed Use Of Video News Releases, Jeffrey Peabody Jun 2008

When The Flock Ignores The Shepherd-Corralling The Undisclosed Use Of Video News Releases, Jeffrey Peabody

Federal Communications Law Journal

Every time you sit down to watch the evening news, you see not only locally produced stories, but also pre-packaged, corporate-sponsored "video news releases" ("VNRs") that are nothing more than commercials in disguise. Unlike political advertising, which must comply with strict sponsorship identification rules, these VNRs remain unregulated. This Note discusses the failed "Truth in Advertising Act," and proposes mandatory disclosure and beefed-up enforcement as necessary steps in stemming the growing use of these "fake news" spots

Undetected Species Losses, Food Webs, And Ecological Baselines: A Cautionary Tale From The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, Usa, Joel Berger

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Large protected areas are often considered natural yet outside pressures may compromise ecological integrity. This paper points to a problem in assessing ecological baselines: what if species' extirpations go undetected? I present a data set spanning 130 years that demonstrates the loss of white-tailed jack rabbits Lepus townsendii from two National Parks in the well studied 60,000 km(2) Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, USA. While these extirpations have been unnoticed until now, an ecological consequence may be elevated predation on juvenile ungulates. A critical challenge we face is how to apply better the concept of shifting baselines to the restoration of functional …

E-Government For Development: A Case Study From Mozambique, Gertrudes Macueve Jun 2008

E-Government For Development: A Case Study From Mozambique, Gertrudes Macueve

The African Journal of Information Systems

This paper draws upon Amartya Sen’s concept of "development as freedom" as an effective approach to analyze e-government for development initiatives. An interpretive analysis of three projects ongoing in Mozambique report that although some "freedoms" are currently reachable through these initiatives, a lot needs to be done to achieve "development as freedom." The use of this theoretical approach provides a valuable contribution to the research domain of ICTs for development. This article also draws practical recommendations to assist managers of e-government projects in Mozambique, as well as other developing countries.

The Impact Of Telemonitoring On Self-Efficacy, Emotional Well-Being, And Clinical Outcomes In Patients With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Or Heart Failure, Jaclyn West-Frasier

Dissertations

Telemonitoring is the remote monitoring of patients' health status using telecommunications and information processing technologies. This pilot study analyzed data collected through a parent study that randomized 46 home health patients to either standard care (SC) or standard care with the addition of telemonitoring (TM). The telemonitoring device used in this study provided daily transmission of physiologic data and patients responses to questions about their disease and symptom management. Data analysis was completed to address the question whether telemonitoring, as part of standard home care for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and patients with heart failure (HF), has …

Physicians Providing Alternative Medicine: Boundary Crossing And The Emergence Of Integrative Medicine, Richard Scott Lockwood Jun 2008

Physicians Providing Alternative Medicine: Boundary Crossing And The Emergence Of Integrative Medicine, Richard Scott Lockwood

Dissertations and Theses

Integrative medicine (IM) has organized as a new area of specialization in mainstream healthcare. The development of IM is widely attributed to popular demand for the range of therapies known collectively as Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM). During the 1990's the rate of acceptance of CAM accelerated among consumers, professions, financing and education. The Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) measured CAM utilization and professional service provision during the years 1996 and 1998, but never since. These surveys were unique because they specifically inquired as to whether CAM was provided by a physician, among other types of professionals. This dissertation defines …

Moderate Alcohol Use And Mortality From Ischaemic Heart Disease: A Prospective Study In Older Chinese People, Mary Schooling, Sun Wenji, Sai Yin Ho, Wai Man Chan, May Ked Tham, Kin Sang Ho, Gabriel M. Leung, Tai Hing Lam

Publications and Research

Abstract
Background: Moderate alcohol use is generally associated with lower ischaemic heart disease (IHD) mortality but it is difficult to ascertain whether this is due to attributes of moderate alcohol users or the properties of alcohol itself. Evidence from populations with different patterns of alcohol use and IHD can provide crucial evidence. We assessed the association of moderate alcohol use with IHD mortality in older Chinese people from Hong Kong.

Methodology
We used Cox regression to determine whether moderate alcohol use was associated with IHD mortality in a prospective, population-based cohort study of all 56167 attendees, aged 65 years or …

Reproductive Fertility In Herd Bulls, George Perry, Julie Walker, Russ Daly Jun 2008

Reproductive Fertility In Herd Bulls, George Perry, Julie Walker, Russ Daly

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Herd bulls have a large influence on many aspects of beef operations, especially an operation’s profitability. For example, percent calf crop weaned is the single most important factor influencing profitability, and the number of cows bred during the breeding season plays the largest role in percent calf crop weaned. Therefore, an operation’s profitability is directly tied to the herd bull’s breeding ca¬pability. In addition, herd bulls supply half of the genetics to all the calves he sires; therefore, bull selection can be the most powerful method of genetic improvement in the herd. Herd bulls also influence overall herd fertility more …

Alimentación De Las Vacas Lecheras Para Condición Corporal, Alvaro Garcia, Arnold Hippen Jun 2008

Alimentación De Las Vacas Lecheras Para Condición Corporal, Alvaro Garcia, Arnold Hippen

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Psychosocial Support, Newborn Readmissions, And Postpartum Follow-Up, Dora Barilla

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Background. Women and their infants are being discharged as soon as 24 hours after giving birth without proper follow-up care. The Maternity Department at San Antonio Community Hospital established the Family Care Center (HBFCC) in November 2000 in response to a higher than expected newborn readmission rate, shorter maternity hospitalizations, and a lack of postpartum follow-up. A comprehensive program was offered to support new families in the form of developmental assessment and intervention, breastfeeding, infant and toddler nutrition, health promotion and education, and referrals to appropriate agencies when indicated. In 2004, due to inadequate funding, the hospital reduced the intervention …

Behavioral And Physiological Ecology Of Scorpion Venom Expenditure: Stinging, Spraying, And Venom Regeneration, Zia Nisani Jun 2008

Behavioral And Physiological Ecology Of Scorpion Venom Expenditure: Stinging, Spraying, And Venom Regeneration, Zia Nisani

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

In this dissertation, I reviewed the functional aspects of venom from a behavioral perspective to develop a comprehensive understanding of the behavioral ecology of venom. To explore the behavioral and physiological ecology of venom expenditure by scorpions, I conducted four studies of the medically significant Buthid scorpion Parabuthus transvaalicus. The first two experiments revealed that scorpions regulate their venom expenditure during defensive stinging and squirting in the most complex manner yet described for any venomous organism. When stinging, these scorpions can choose between delivering a dry or wet sting. Should they deliver a wet sting, they meter the volume …

A Geospatial Approach For New Perspectives On Satisfaction With Health Services In Malawi, Gideon Mazinga

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This dissertation explored the spatial pattern of user satisfaction with health services and factors, including policies that potentially explain the variation in the district-level of user satisfaction with health services. Nationwide secondary data was extracted from the 2002 Core Social Welfare Indicators Survey and the National Health Services Statistics databases obtained from National Statistics of Malawi. The National Health Facilities inventory obtained from the Malawi diffusion project was also geocoded to display the distribution of health care facilities in the country. Spatial autocorrelation and regression modeling techniques were applied on the national representative data set.

The spatial autocorrelation test revealed …
