Towards A Simulation-Based Study Of Grassland And Animal Diversity Management In Livestock Farming Systems, G. Martin, Michel Duru, Roger Martin-Clouaire, Jp Rellier, Jp Theau, O. Thérond, L. Hossard

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In less-favored areas, livestock production involves the management of native vegetation as a resource base. A challenging issue in such systems regards the design of efficient and sustainable management strategies that make it possible to exploit the diversity of grasslands and herd batches over different time scales. This paper describes the conceptual approach that supports the representation and simulation of farm-scale models of grassland-based livestock systems in the SEDIVER project. It enables the coupling of species-rich grasslands and livestock models with sophisticated decision-making models. The latter embed a representation of management strategies that specify in a flexible and adaptive manner …

Sexual Orientation Wage Gap: The Role Of Occupational Sorting And Human Capital, Heather Antecol, Anneke Jong, Michael Steinberger Jul 2008

Sexual Orientation Wage Gap: The Role Of Occupational Sorting And Human Capital, Heather Antecol, Anneke Jong, Michael Steinberger

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

Using data from the 2000 U.S. Census, the authors explore two alternative explanations for the sexual orientation wage gap: occupational sorting, and human capital differences. They find that lesbian women earned more than heterosexual women irrespective of marital status, while gay men earned less than their married heterosexual counterparts but more than their cohabitating heterosexual counterparts. Results of a Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition indicate that the relative wage advantages observed for some groups of lesbians and gay men were mainly owing to greater levels of human capital accumulation (particularly education), while occupational sorting had little or no influence. The relative wage penalties …

Effects Of Healthy Families New York On Maternal Behaviors: Observational Assessments Of Positive And Negative Parenting, Center For Human Services Research, University At Albany

Children, Family & Elder Services Reports and Research Briefs

This paper examines the effectiveness of Healthy Families New York (HFNY), a home visiting program based on the Healthy Families America model, in promoting parenting competencies and preventing maladaptive parenting behaviors. The evaluation used a randomized controlled trial, in which women were randomly assigned during pregnancy or shortly after the birth of the target child to an intervention group that was offered home visitation services or to a control group that was given information and referral to other appropriate services. The original data collection effort included maternal self-report and administrative data gathered at baseline, birth, and one, two, and three …

Muscle-Bone Relationships In The Lower Leg Of Healthy Pre-Pubertal Females And Males, Teresa L. Binkley, Bonny Specker Jul 2008

Muscle-Bone Relationships In The Lower Leg Of Healthy Pre-Pubertal Females And Males, Teresa L. Binkley, Bonny Specker

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

Muscle-bone relationships in healthy pre-pubertal children were investigated using four muscle measures as predictors of tibial strength: 66% tibia cross-sectional muscle area (CSMA) by pQCT; leg lean mass (LLM) by DXA; and muscle power (Power) and force (Force) measured during a two-footed jump. Polar strength strain index (pSSI), a calculated surrogate for bone strength at the 20% distal tibia, was obtained on 105 (54 male) self-assessed pre-pubertal children. The amount of muscle (CSMA, LLM) may influence bone strength more than muscle strength (Power, Force) during periods of rapid growth. Correlations and multiple regression partial-R values from models controlling for age, …

Service and Support Animals Collection

Tests of motor laterality and behavioral reactivity, as well as salivary cortisol concentrations, were examined in this pilot study to identify dogs best suited to guide dog work. Over a 14-month period, lateralization tests were conducted and cortisol concentrations were determined on 3 separate occasions, and temperament testing was performed on 2. Potential guide dogs (N = 43) involved in this study were 5 golden retrievers (4 males, 1 female) and thirty-eight Labrador retrievers (8 black males, fifteen yellow males, 5 black females, and ten yellow females). Results from these tests were then compared with the ultimate success of the …

Analyzing Best Practices In Technology Education, Dan L. Householder

Engineering Education Faculty Publications

Innovation in technology education is at an all-time high in school programs around the world. Yet creative teachers rarely have an opportunity, even in their local settings, to elucidate the goals and outcomes of their programs, to explain why specific activities are chosen, and to point out the specific student outcomes accomplished in the technology classroom. In this volume, 12 technology educators describe eight unique approaches to introducing learners to intrinsically interesting learning opportunities in their classrooms. These compelling accounts communicate the excitement of student exploration of topics ranging from puppetry to biotechnology, from reverse engineering to the history of …

Monitoring And Assessing The Use Of External Quality Review Organizations To Improve Services For Young Children: A Toolkit For State Medicaid Agencies, Tara Krissik, Henry T. Ireys, Anne R. Markus, Sara J. Rosenbaum Jul 2008

Monitoring And Assessing The Use Of External Quality Review Organizations To Improve Services For Young Children: A Toolkit For State Medicaid Agencies, Tara Krissik, Henry T. Ireys, Anne R. Markus, Sara J. Rosenbaum

Health Policy and Management Faculty Publications

Federal regulations encourage state Medicaid agencies to use external quality review organizations (EQROs) to help implement strategies for assessing and improving the quality of medical services provided to beneficiaries enrolled in managed care plans. However, many states have not availed themselves of this opportunity and may lack guidance on how to do so. This report provides agencies with specifications for developing a scope of work that will lead to conceptually and methodologically sound studies of the quality of preventive and developmental services for young children enrolled in Medicaid. Among other recommendations, the authors note that states may require EQROs to …

Patents And Traditional Medicine: Digital Capture, Creative Legal Interventions And The Dialectics Of Knowledge Transformation, Chidi Oguamanam

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

This article examines the debate over the exclusion of indigenous or local knowledge forms from the global intellectual property system, and some of the current attempts to solve this problem. Using the lens of cultural cosmopolitanism, the article highlights important trends in the dialectics of developing countries' engagement with intellectual property and other collateral knowledge protection systems. The three sites at which this significant development is unfolding are: (1) the digitization of traditional medicinal knowledge through India's traditional knowledge digital library (TKDL) project; (2) a recent attempt at incorporating innovations in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) in Taiwanese patent law; and …

Corn Distillers Dried Grains (Ddgs) For Growing-Finishing Swine, Phillip S. Miller Jul 2008

Corn Distillers Dried Grains (Ddgs) For Growing-Finishing Swine, Phillip S. Miller

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Two-hundred and forty pigs growing-finishing pigs were used to evaluate the feeding value of distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). Treatments consisted of 0, 5, 10 and 15% dietary DDGS inclusion. Treatments did not affect average daily gain (ADG), average daily feed intake (ADFI) or gain:feed (G:F) during the grower 1 period (P > 0.05). During the grower 2 period ADG and ADFI linearly decreased as DDGS increased (P < 0.05). No differences among treatments were detected throughout the feeding phase finisher 1 for ADG, ADFI, and G:F (P > 0.05). During the finisher 2 feeding phase, there was a linear reduction in ADG and ADFI in response to dietary DDGS inclusion (P = 0.01). Overall, linear reductions …

Writing Toward Readers' Better Health: A Case Study Examining The Development Of Online Health Information, Russell Willerton

English Literature Faculty Publications and Presentations

Each year, more people search the Internet for health information. Through a case study conducted at a prominent health information company, I will show that technical communicators are well suited to contribute to the development of online health information. Like other technical communicators, online health information developers must make rhetorical choices based on audience needs, function within specific social contexts, and work through challenges of writing, editing, and project management.

The Myth Of The ‘Opportunity To Read’ In Contract Law, Omri Ben-Shahar Jul 2008

The Myth Of The ‘Opportunity To Read’ In Contract Law, Omri Ben-Shahar

Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series

Standard form contracts in consumer transactions are usually not read by consumers. This "unreadness" of contracts creates opportunities for drafters to engage in unfair trade practices. Various doctrines of contracts and consumer protection law address this concern. One of the prominent solutions coming out of recent proposals for reform is to give individuals a more substantial opportunity to read the contract before manifesting assent. With the greater opportunity to read, more transactors will actually read the terms and assent to the boilerplate will be more "robust." This Essay argues that solutions that focus on providing consumers an opportunity to read …
