Currently, rising health care cost is an important topic on many agendas and platforms. In 2007, health care spending in the United States reached $2.3 trillion, and was projected to reach $3 trillion in 2011 (NCHC, 2007). Increasing health care cost is in direct relationship with the rise in the ageing population, chronic illness, and the uninsured lower socioeconomic population as well. The research on medical compliance and attendance (missed/kept appointment) behavior is an important area to explore because it is critical for all aspects of successful treatment, disease prevention, and health promotions that have direct correlation with health care …

Effect Of Ca And Ph On Disease Severity Of Pink Rot Phytophthora Erythroseptica In Russett Norkotah Potato Solanum Tuberosum, Jared H. Benson
Theses and Dissertations
Phytophthora erythroseptica Pethyb. is a devastating fungal pathogen of potato (Solanum tuberosum). The pathogen causes a disease known as pink rot. Pink rot results in necrosis and decay of tubers; and is responsible for major losses pre and post harvest. Attributes of the disease are progressing toward epidemic proportions. To help prevent such dramatic outbreaks of the disease, understanding the factors associated with incidence will provide opportunities to control the pathogen. A link between pH and disease severity has been observed. We studied the effects of pH and Ca to determine their influence on disease development. Low pH and Ca …

Health Decision Behaviors: Appropriateness Of Dietary Choice, Daryle Hermelin Wane
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Dietary choice is a complex mechanism that is influenced by multiple internal and external factors that impact individuals across the life span. The study was designed to examine how individuals make snack food choices based on integration of food motives (cues), appropriateness (nutritional index) as functions of nutritional knowledge, food-related motives, and information processing styles. Community college students participated in a multi part on line survey that ascertained food motives (FCQ), nutrition knowledge (FNQ), information processing (NFC), food pairing task and demographic background data. The single sided Lens model was used to determine the regression weights of the nine food …

Perceptions Of Programming: Cultivation And Third Person Influences On College Students, Suzette Marie Fisher
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There have been many studies conducted on television and its effects. Since the 1950's, when television emerged, there has been an influx of patterns and behaviors associated with television viewing and programming. Many researchers are fascinated with television and the reactions of those who are directly affected by it. People have been known to act out in many ways as a result of something they saw on television. Many believe that television viewing directly affects a person's mind.
An analysis of the results of this qualitative study indicates that college students perceive television has an impact on viewers. Throughout the …

The Trophic Ecologies Of Larval Billfishes, Tunas, And Coral Reef Fishes In The Straits Of Florida: Piscivory, Selectivity, And Niche Separation, Joel Kent Llopiz
Open Access Dissertations
The processes influencing larval fish survival in the low-latitude open ocean are poorly understood, especially with regard to feeding. As part of a large-scale study that included two years of monthly sampling in the Straits of Florida (SOF), the objectives of this dissertation were to elucidate the larval fish feeding behaviors and strategies of 1) istiophorid billfishes, 2) tunas, and 3) coral reef fishes, while also 4) characterizing the feeding environment, synthesizing the dominant trophic pathways to fish larvae, and reviewing the literature for evidence of latitudinal distinctions in larval fish trophodynamics. Larval billfishes exhibited highly selective feeding, and their …

Breastfeeding Information In Ob/Gyn Textbooks Needs Improvement, Dana Espindola (Schwartz), Anthony Ogburn, Eve Espey, Barbara Philipp, Anne Merewood
Undergraduate Medical Student Research
Pediatricians and obstetricians work side-by-side in educating and supporting the breastfeeding mother and baby. The breastfeeding information in textbooks used by each specialty needs to be consistent, accurate, and evidence-based. A recent study found the breastfeeding information in pediatric textbooks to be highly variable, and at times inaccurate and inconsistent. The objective of this study was to determine if breastfeeding information in general ob/gyn textbooks published since 1999 is current and evidence-based. Five ob/gyn textbooks (the most current editions) were reviewed using a standardized scoring sheet similar to the one used in the pediatric textbook study. Five reviewers (2 obstetricians, …

Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
The students will be introduced to the surface area and volume of cylinders, prisms, pyramids, and cones. The main questions on which the unit is focused are: - What are different ways that three-dimensional objects are described or depicted? - What types of problems are solved using three-dimensional objects? They will participate in activities to help them create the formulas for both surface area and volume and become comfortable using these formulas to solve real-world problems and create their own applications. They will also analyze the relationship between surface area and volume. The culminating activity in this unit is a …

Using Local Data To Advance Quantitative Literacy, Stephen Sweet, Susanne Morgan, Danette Ifert Johnson
Using Local Data To Advance Quantitative Literacy, Stephen Sweet, Susanne Morgan, Danette Ifert Johnson
Numeracy
In this article we consider the application of local data as a means of advancing quantitative literacy. We illustrate the use of three different sources of local data: institutional data, Census data, and the National College Health Assessment survey. Our learning modules are applied in courses in sociology and communication, but the strategy of using local data can be integrated beyond these disciplinary boundaries. We demonstrate how these data can be used to stimulate student interests in class discussion, advance analytic skills, as well as develop capacities in written and verbal communication. We conclude by considering concerns that may influence …

Undergraduate Medical Student Research
The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the VO2 max values of college soccer players at the University of New Mexico to data available from other collegiate teams. These values are beneficial for athletes, trainers, and coaches alike. Performance in athletics has improved significantly over the past 20 years as demonstrated by faster times and increased fitness levels. This is due to multiple factors including changes in nutrition, coaching, and equipment. Methods used in this study include a review of the literature specific for collegiate soccer athletes that were published after the year 2000. In addition, data …

Increasing physical activity (PA) has become a national health objective due to its associated health benefits, but low participation rates. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility of an 8-month (September 2006 - April 2007) PA book club (Women Bound to Be Active-WBA) in increasing PA and self-worth (SW) among women. Fifty-six adult women participated in an 8-month intervention consisting of weekly meetings designed to improve PA knowledge, awareness, confidence, and SW. Results indicated a significant increase in PA and SW. The WBA program represents a creative theory-based approach to empowering women to be more active.
