Remembrance Of Lives Past: The Challenge Of Addressing Epigenetic Risk In Society, Fazal Khan
Popular Media
Do our ancestors’ experiences from several generations ago play a role in our current health? Could a famine or a period of food abundance experienced by our grandfathers affect whether we are currently obese or likely to develop diabetes? Can being the grandchildren of those who suffered through genocide or intense racial discrimination affect levels of certain chemicals in our brains even if we are not exposed to the same social stresses? In other words, do we biologically inherit the “memories” of past generations independent of changes to our ancestors’ genetic code or DNA? Assistant Professor Fazal Khan explores how …

The "Goal Setting Approach" For Overweight And Obese Patients: Results Of A Retrospective Cohort Study In A Dietetic Consultation, Maaike Kruseman, Magali Volery, Patrick A. Bovier
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: To describe the performance of a dietary procedure based on a cognitive behavioral approach among overweight or obese patients. Methods: Standardized 45 minutes consultations were conducted by a dietician to obese (n=139) and overweight (n=56) patients followed between 1998 and 2003 at the dietetic consultation of the Outpatient clinic of the University Hospitals of Geneva. Outcome measures were the proportion of eating behavior changes and weight change over time. Results: Patients attended a mean of 7 consultations and reached on average 57% of their dietary behavioral goals. At the end of follow-up, 36 (19%) patients had lost at least …

Breastfeeding Helps Prevent Two Major Infant Illnesses, Lysa Story, Thomas Perish
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: Breastfeeding has been shown to reduce morbidity and mortality rates due to gastrointestinal and respiratory illnesses in children worldwide. Components of breast milk give the breast milk its protective mechanism against childhood illnesses. Additionally, breast milk is economical, costing parents nothing financially. Objective: To provide evidence to healthcare providers regarding the protective effects of breast milk against the incidence of gastroenteritis and pneumonia in infants. Methods: Fifteen published studies were reviewed regarding the effect of breastfeeding on the incidence of gastrointestinal and/or respiratory illnesses. Studies ranged from six months to twelve years in length, comparing the incidence of illnesses …

Five commercial botanical products (Shilianhua [SLH] tablets, Shiu Huo pills, Fenulyn, Bitter Melon, and Glucose Metabolic Support), available in the US market, with reported claims for regulation of metabolism were screened for their effect on body weight gain in high-fat diet-induced obese mice. Pilot results suggested that SLH tablets attenuated body weight gain, whereas Shiu Huo pills and Fenulyn tended to promote weight gain in the mice on the high-fat diet. To investigate the bioactive components in the SLH tablet, the wild SLH plant (Sinocrassula indica Berge) was collected from China and used to make a variety of extracts including …

Epigenetics refers to heritable changes in gene expression that are not attributable to changes in DNA sequence and impacts many areas of applied and basic biology including developmental biology, gene therapy, somatic cell nuclear transfer, somatic cell reprogramming, and stem cell biology. Epigenetic changes are known to contribute to aging in addition to multiple disease states. Epigenetic changes can be influenced by environmental factors that in turn can be inherited by daughter cells during cell division and can also be inherited through the germ line. Thus, it is intriguing to consider that epigenetics, in general, may play a role in …

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Information about the potential for crop–wild hybridization is needed to understand how crop genes, including transgenes, affect the population genetics and ecology of sexually compatible relatives. Transgenic sorghum is under development for use by traditional farmers in Africa, the center of origin for sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], but systematic surveys of the current extent of contact with wild and weedy relatives are lacking. We studied wild and weedy sorghums that are interfertile with the crop and constitute a crop–wild–weed complex. The survey was conducted in 2005 in areas of traditional sorghum cultivation in three regions of Ethiopia and …

Biological Monitoring And Chromosomal Aberration Of Workers In Rubber Industry, M. Indra, V. Bhuvaneshwari
Biological Monitoring And Chromosomal Aberration Of Workers In Rubber Industry, M. Indra, V. Bhuvaneshwari
Ethnobotanical Leaflets
The genotoxic and biochemical characteristic effect of environmental pollutants generated in a rubber tyre industry workers was investigated on biochemical characteristic of 15 workers exposed for different periods and compared with an equal number of unexposed controls matched in respect of age, sex, social status, period of exposures, smoking habits and drug intake, if any. Chromosomal aberrations (CA), hematological parameters, selected bio-chemical parameters and enzymic antioxidants were analysed . All the parameters showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the exposed sample compared with controls The environmental pollutants generated in rubber industry were thus found to be genotoxic and tobacco smoke was found to enhance the genotoxic effect.

Mistletoes are familiar to most Europeans and North Americans because of the Christmas folklore associated with these parasitic flowering plants (33,116). Some may also know these plants are parasites of trees but do not realize that mistletoes are widespread, ecologically important components of forests worldwide. Although some mistletoe species are damaging pathogens, most do not impact economically valuable crops and forest products but actually play key roles in forest ecosystems. Particularly in Loranthaceae, coevolutionary relationships with birds (involving pollination and seed dispersal) have fueled several adaptive radiations, thus producing one of the most diverse and fascinating life forms on our …

Green Tea Extract As A Natural Antioxidant To Extend The Shelf-Life Of Fresh-Cut Lettuce, Catherine Barry-Ryan, Ana Belen Martin-Diana, Daniel Rico
Articles
Green tea extract (GT) was evaluated as a preservative treatment for fresh-cut lettuce. Different quality markers, e.g. respiration, browning, ascorbic acid and carotenoid content were evaluated. GT concentration (0.25, 0.5 and 1 g 100 mL− 1) and temperature (20 °C and 50 °C) were tested. Optimal GT treatment (0.25 g 100 mL− 1 at 20 °C) was compared with chlorine (120 ppm at 20 °C). High GT concentrations (0.5 g 100 mL− 1 and 1.0 g 100 mL− 1) maintained better prevent ascorbic acid and carotenoid loss than 0.25 g 100 mL− 1 GT and chlorine. GT increased browning of …
International Engagements: The Characteristics Of International Students’ Engagement With University, Daniel Edwards
International Engagements: The Characteristics Of International Students’ Engagement With University, Daniel Edwards
Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE)
The international student market is important and lucrative for Australian universities and the Australian economy in general. In 2006, nearly 15 per cent of all income of Australian tertiary providers was derived from international student fees, a total of $2.3 billion. This makes international education Australia’s largest service export and its third largest export industry overall. Between 2001 and 2006, enrolments of undergraduate international students in Australian universities increased 43.3 per cent. By comparison, the growth in enrolments of domestic undergraduate students in this time was much smaller at 1.7 per cent (DEST, 2001 - 2006). In 2006, 14.2 per …

Compost Production And Use In Horticulture, Bob Paulin, Peter O'Malley
Compost Production And Use In Horticulture, Bob Paulin, Peter O'Malley
Bulletins 4000 -
Maintaining and improving soil organic carbon levels is becoming an increasingly important aspect of modern farming. Compost provides potentially one of the most effective ways of applying organic matter to soils and improving organic carbon levels.
Improving soil organic carbon is directly related to soil quality and performance. Increased quality reflects improved biological function (soil health), fertility and physical attributes that include better drainage, reduced compaction and erosion, and improved moisture-holding capability, at least for lighter soils.
Compost is not the only option available. Others include the use of cover or break crops, reducing the use of cultivations, selecting safe …
