Leaving It On The Field: A Review Of The Bowl Championship Series And Proposal Of A Postseason Playoff To Remedy The Negative Ethical Implications On Higher Education Of The Current Model, Thomas Benton York

Honors Theses

This thesis considers the current format of the postseason for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I-Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), critiques its ethical implications, and proposes a twelve-team postseason playoff to remedy the ethical dilemmas caused by the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and the commercialization of football at the Division I-FBS level. Research was focused on sports law journals, books detailing the history of college football, transcripts from Congressional hearings, and articles from prominent sports news sources. The first chapter outlines the evolution of college football since the advent of television as mass media and highlights the medium’s direct …

Storytellers: Stories Within Songs, Carly Amber Phillips Jan 2008

Storytellers: Stories Within Songs, Carly Amber Phillips

Honors Theses

Stories are an important aspect of all cultures, v^^ether modem or ancient. History is passed on through stories, and lessons are learned. Some allow us to explore new dimensions beyond the scope of our own experiences, while others emphasize aspects of our life. Stories can take on a non-traditional format, such as the lyrics of songs. Few genres of music have been able to tell stories as genuine and sincere as those of classical country musicians. This genre of music is important because many of its artists tell stories that parallel the life and history of my family. On a …

Concert Promotion In A College Community: A Guide For The Hopeful Concert Promoter, Lori Ann Simpson Jan 2008

Concert Promotion In A College Community: A Guide For The Hopeful Concert Promoter, Lori Ann Simpson

Honors Theses

This thesis was comprised of research in action in an attempt to plan and promote a concert in a college community. Research began in the summer of 2007 with an internship with Live Nation, the world’s largest concert promoter. After spending three months working in the live music industry, I decided to put that knowledge into practice by organizing an awareness concert for Mississippi Blood Services in Oxford, Mississippi. I spent much time planning this concert, first as a large outdoor event, and after it became evident that would not be possible, a smaller, local event at an Oxford venue. …

Current Model For A Narrow Bipolar Pulse, Samuel Stewart Watson Jan 2008

Current Model For A Narrow Bipolar Pulse, Samuel Stewart Watson

Honors Theses

Narrow bipolar pulses (NBPs) are a class of high-altitude, high-energy discharges that occur during some thunderstorms. The mechanism responsible for initiation of these discharges is not known, but a explanation called runaway breakdown has been proposed by Gurevich et al. 2004. In runaway breakdown, fast ‘seed’ electrons are continually accelerated by the ambient electric field causing the discharge. As the runaway electrons collide with atoms in the air, they create a cascade of other runaway electrons as well as slower free electrons. In accordance with this suggestion, we model a current that increases exponentially along its propagation channel (MTLEI). The …

The Magnitude Of Repression By Cro Protein In The Presence Of Lambda Operator Variants, Shabnam Sarker Jan 2008

The Magnitude Of Repression By Cro Protein In The Presence Of Lambda Operator Variants, Shabnam Sarker

Honors Theses

Synthetic genetic circuits were constructed to observe the dynamics of repression by the Cro and scCro repressors. Each circuit contained at least one repressor and a reporter gene. Cro repressor is one of two opposite repressors. This artificial switch also had a single-chain cro (scCro) protein that would not have to dimerize like Cro to be fimctional. Such repressors bind operator sites to prevent fiirther transcription fi-om the promoters. The Lac Repressor (LacR) was used to prevent transcription firom Pr. The inducer EPTG was used to remove the Lac Repressor. A reporter gene LacZ is transcribed from Pr. The protein …

Abnormal Group Velocities Of Ultrasonic Pulses In Aqueous Suspensions Of Polymer Microspheres, Robert Evans Heithaus

Honors Theses

In this project acoustic waves were employed to measure dispersion properties of two suspensions of polymer microspheres that were believed to support superluminal group velocities. Broadband ultrasonic pulses were first used to study a suspension of microspheres with a mean diameter of 160 microns. The validity of the data was verified using Kramers-Kronig relations, and the attenuation, phase, and group velocity spectra During the second phase of the project a pulse consisting of broadband and narrowband components were propagated through the same 160 micron sample. The data are depicted in the Results section. Phase II studied several different bandwidths for …

Misuse And Abuse Of Morse V. Frederick By Lower Courts: Sretching The High Court's Ruling Too Far To Censor Student Expression, Clay Calvert

Seattle University Law Review

This Article argues that the Fourth Amendment protects confidential attorney-client communications from unreasonable government intrusion, including unreasonable court orders compelling production of attorney-client communications. The Article begins by focusing on the elements of a claim under the Fourth Amendment. Part II identifies the elements and subsequent sections address each element in the context of attorney-client communications. Part III considers the legitimate expectation of privacy in confidential attorney-client communications. Part IV addresses the search and seizure requirement, explores authority distinguishing between "actual" and "constructive" searches, and concludes that, in addition to searches, court-ordered production of attorney-client communications (a "constructive" search and …

An Unaccountable Familiarity: A Dual Solution To The Problem Of Theft In Theatrical Productions, Jeannette Gunderson Jan 2008

An Unaccountable Familiarity: A Dual Solution To The Problem Of Theft In Theatrical Productions, Jeannette Gunderson

Seattle University Law Review

The production of a play as a whole is a derivative work of joint authorship; thus, copyright law should protect it. As a work of authorship, the sum of the design elements that form a production are protectable by copyright because the production is an original creation; while based on the text of the play, any given production is developed separately from the underlying work and merits its own protection.8 Because of the collaborative and interdependent nature of a production of a play, musical, or opera, the resulting combination of all aspects of design and direction should be protected as …

Recruiting Sexual Minorities And People With Disabilities To Be Dean, Joan W. Howarth Jan 2008

Recruiting Sexual Minorities And People With Disabilities To Be Dean, Joan W. Howarth

Seattle University Law Review

This Essay discusses diversity in deaning as it pertains to two identity categories: members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities, and people with disabilities. Each identity is itself fluid and contested, containing such enormous variations as to render the category illusive and often obfuscating. People with visible disabilities face fundamentally different issues than people with hidden disabilities, for example. Pairing sexual orientation and disability risks false analogies, and worse.

Ambivalence About Social Welfare : An Evaluation Of Measurement Approaches., Jason Gainous Jan 2008

Ambivalence About Social Welfare : An Evaluation Of Measurement Approaches., Jason Gainous

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Research across disciplines, including political science, has embraced the idea that individuals often possess ambivalent attitudes, but there is considerable disagreement about how to measure ambivalence. Determining an effective way of capturing such phenomena is important to our understanding of politics and public opinion. The literature offers several meta-attitudinal and operative measures of ambivalence. I discuss strengths and weaknesses of each of these approaches and conduct a test of the relative construct validity of two meta-attitudinal and two operative measures of social welfare ambivalence using data from a statewide survey of Florida residents in 2004. The findings suggest that one …

Russia And The Cis In 2007 : Putin's Final Year?, Charles E. Ziegler Jan 2008

Russia And The Cis In 2007 : Putin's Final Year?, Charles E. Ziegler

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Russia in 2007 moved further away from a constitutional order governed by the rule of law as President Vladimir Putin's second term drew to a close and the country prepared for parliamentary and presidential elections. High oil and gas prices buoyed the economy, but little progress was made in addressing Russia's serious social problems. In foreign policy, confrontation with the West was balanced by excellent relations with most of Asia.

Memories Of Flesh And Fire: Crossing Over Color Lines, Alice A. Filmer Jan 2008

Memories Of Flesh And Fire: Crossing Over Color Lines, Alice A. Filmer

Iowa Journal of Communication

Throughout this autoethnography, the author weaves personal memories of her early life in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960s and 70s into a larger set of social and historical events of that turbulent era. Using the metaphor of "crossing over," she traces her growing awareness of racial inequality and white privilege during a period in which she must also come to terms with a series of deaths by disease, fire, and assassination. While literally crossing bridges and terrain, she figuratively crosses class and color lines that have long separated generations of her once-wealthy white family from the people …

Antimicrobial Peptides For Use In Oyster Aquaculture: Effect On Pathogens, Commensals, And Eukaryotic Expression Systems, Tarquin Dorrington, Marta Gomez-Chiarri

Fisheries, Animal and Veterinary Sciences Faculty Publications

Two antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) of marine origin, tachyplesin from the Japanese horseshoe crab, Tachypleus tridentatus, and pleurocidin-amide from the winter flounder, Pseudopleuronectes americanus, were tested for their potential effectiveness in disease treatment in oyster aquaculture. Tachyplesin had a greater antimicrobial effect than pleurocidin-amideagainst a range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, with minimum inhibitor concentrations in the range of 0.625 to 5ug mL–1. Tachyplesin (50 mg mL–1) was also more effective than pleurocidin-amide (250 mg mL–1) against the oyster protozoan parasite Perkinsus marinus, reducing its viability to 9% versus 22% in vitro …

Lipid Productivity Of Algae Grown On Dairy Wastewater As A Possible Feedstock For Biodiesel, Ian C. Woertz Jan 2008

Lipid Productivity Of Algae Grown On Dairy Wastewater As A Possible Feedstock For Biodiesel, Ian C. Woertz

Master's Theses

The objective of this thesis is to develop a biological wastewater treatment system that utilizes algal growth to simultaneously create renewable energy in the form of biodiesel and digester biogas, remove polluting nutrients, and abate greenhouse gases. Research under the Department of Energy Aquatic Species Program during 1978-1996 concluded that cultivating algae for biofuels was cost prohibitive at that time and that an integrated approach should be studied that combined wastewater treatment with algal biofuel production. Nutrient removal, in particular nitrogen and phosphorus, from wastewater is a growing regulatory need and the use of algae cultivation could create a unique …
