Controlled Deposition Of Magnetic Molecules And Nanoparticles On Atomically Flat Gold Surfaces, Md. Firoze Haque Jan 2008

Controlled Deposition Of Magnetic Molecules And Nanoparticles On Atomically Flat Gold Surfaces, Md. Firoze Haque

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I am presenting a detailed study to optimize the deposition of magnetic molecules and gold nanoparticles in atomically flat surfaces by self-assembling them from solution. Epitaxially grown and atomically flat gold surface on mica is used as substrate for this study. These surfaces have roughness of the order one tenth of a nanometer and are perfect to image molecules and nanoparticles in the 1-10 nanometers range. The purpose of these studies is to find the suitable parameters and conditions necessary to deposit a monolayer of nano-substance on chips containing gold nanowires which will eventually be used to …

Media, Civil Society And Political Culture In West Africa, Mohamed S. Camara Jan 2008

Media, Civil Society And Political Culture In West Africa, Mohamed S. Camara

Security Studies & International Affairs - Daytona Beach

From the premise that a free and democratic society is impossible without free and responsible media and an active civil society and that freedom and democracy must evolve from within a particular society in order to mature into a way of life for the society and its media, the present study examines the symbiotic role of the media and civil society in West Africa’s struggle for democratic governance. It addresses the question of the independence and accountability of West Africa’s media vis-à-vis foreign donors, local business and political forces along with the effects on local audiences of giant Western/global media …

Examining The Effect Of Organizational Policy Changeon Taser Utilizations, Michael Miller Jan 2008

Examining The Effect Of Organizational Policy Changeon Taser Utilizations, Michael Miller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of organizational policy changes within the Use-of-Force Continuum on taser usage and officer's perceptions of taser effectiveness. Tasers have been used by police since the 1970s and their use is increasing as the technology has improved. Data reveals that tasers are beneficial for controlling non-compliant suspects while preventing serious injuries and rarely has their use resulted in death. Much of the public controversy surrounding tasers centers on when and how often officers deploy them. Use of force data from 890 police citizen encounters during a two-year period was analyzed to …

Sparing Internet Radio From The Real Threat Of The Hypothetical Marketplace, Mark D. Robertson Jan 2008

Sparing Internet Radio From The Real Threat Of The Hypothetical Marketplace, Mark D. Robertson

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

In early 2007, the newly minted Copyright Royalty Board(CRB) handed down its first ruling, which set royalty rates for the digital performance of sound recordings. The CRB's ruling ignited a firestorm of concern among Internet radio broadcasters (webcasters) and their listeners. For some webcasters, the change to royalty rates constituted a 300-1200% increase over what was due under the previous scheme. This massive increase in royalties is attributable to the willing buyer/willing seller standard that the CRB is statutorily required to employ. This standard directs the CRB to construct one hypothetical marketplace and establish rates to which most buyers and …

Pornography, Coercion, And Copyright Law 2.0, Ann Bartow Jan 2008

Pornography, Coercion, And Copyright Law 2.0, Ann Bartow

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The lack of regulation of the production of pornography in the United States leaves pornography performers exposed to substantial risks. Producers of pornography typically respond to attempts to regulate pornography as infringements upon free speech. At the same time, large corporations involved in the production and sale of pornography rely on copyright law's complex regulatory framework to protect their pornographic content from copying and unauthorized distribution. Web 2.0 also facilitates the production and distribution of pornography by individuals. These user-generators produce their own pornography, often looking to monetize their productions themselves via advertising revenues and subscription models. Much like their …

User-Generated Content And The Future Of Copyright: Part One--Investiture Of Ownership, Steven Hetcher Jan 2008

User-Generated Content And The Future Of Copyright: Part One--Investiture Of Ownership, Steven Hetcher

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

While user-generated content (UGC) has been around for quite some time, the digital age has led to an explosion of new forms of UGC. Current UGC mega-sites, such as YouTube, Facebook, and MySpace, have given UGC a new level of significance, due to their ability to bring together large numbers of users to interact in new ways. The "user" in UGC generally refers to amateurs, but also includes professionals and amateurs aspiring to become professionals. "Generated" is synonymous with created, reflecting the inclusion of some minimal amount of creativity in the user's work. Finally, "content" refers to digital content, or …

A Libel Law Analysis Of Media Abuses In Reporting On The Duke Lacrosse Fabricated Rape Charges, David A. Elder Jan 2008

A Libel Law Analysis Of Media Abuses In Reporting On The Duke Lacrosse Fabricated Rape Charges, David A. Elder

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The broad outlines of the monumental injustices involved in the Duke lacrosse rape-that-never-happened case are well known. An unethical local prosecutor, Michael B. Nifong, for partisan political reasons, pursued the Duke lacrosse team and ultimately indicted three of its members based almost solely on the accusations of a wholly unreliable, self-proclaimed victim. Nifong received generous support and sustenance from many left-leaning, politically active Duke faculty, an extraordinarily inept (or worse) Duke administration, and almost the entirety of the mainstream media. Ultimately, following a detailed analysis by his office, North Carolina Attorney General Roy A. Cooper publicly excoriated Nifong in concluding …

A Prototype For Narrative-Based Interactivity In Theme Parks, Kirsten Kischuk Jan 2008

A Prototype For Narrative-Based Interactivity In Theme Parks, Kirsten Kischuk

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to look at the potential for interactive devices to enhance the story of future theme park attractions. The most common interactive theme park rides are about game-based interaction, competition, and scoring, rather than about story, character, and plot. Research into cognitive science, interactivity, narrative, immersion, user interface, theming and other fields of study illuminated some potentially useful guidelines for creating compelling experiences for park guests. In order to test some of these ideas, an interactive device was constructed and tested with study subjects. Each study subject watched a video recording of an existing theme …

The Attic Door: A Feature Length Motion Picture, Daniel Daneau Jan 2008

The Attic Door: A Feature Length Motion Picture, Daniel Daneau

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

THE ATTIC DOOR is the feature-length film co-written and directed by Danny Daneau while pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at the University of Central Florida. Many challenges had to be met to produce a feature-length motion picture utilizing digital technology on an ultra-low budget as part of a graduate education. Beyond gaining a profound understanding of the physical, financial, and emotional strength it takes to complete a feature-length motion picture, Daneau experienced the creative challenges that all filmmakers must meet when applying the principles of filmmaking theory to an actual work of self-expression. The production process for an original …

Hope For A Thorn: The Making Of A Microbudget Digital Feature Film, Leslie Kitzinger

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper provides a look at the making of a microbudget feature film. It seeks to explain my growth as a filmmaker and an artist, through the challenges, both narrative and practical, that I encountered, as well as provide documentation following the process. Hope for a Thorn: The Making of a Microbudget Digital Feature Film includes elements from each phase of filmmaking, from script and preproduction to the marketing plan. This document shows the tremendous amount of preparation and planning that goes into the making of a microbudget digital feature film.

Gutter King, Keith Morris Jan 2008

Gutter King, Keith Morris

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Gutter King had a threefold purpose: to create a feature film using limited resources, to make the film bridge the gap between a defined artistic aesthetic and its broader distribution goals, and to make the film entertaining to its target market of 14-24 year old males. The methods used: exploiting new digital technology, using a limited workforce (crew), and implementing a planned improvisational structure.

Marijuana Legalization: Americans' Attitudes Over Four Decades, Anthony Saieva Jan 2008

Marijuana Legalization: Americans' Attitudes Over Four Decades, Anthony Saieva

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Americans have long held a variety of opinions when it comes to the legalization of marijuana. While previous research has mostly focused on use rates and behavior, the purpose of this examination is to specifically analyze people's attitudes towards marijuana legalization. Of particular importance was (1) the extent to which attitudes towards marijuana legalization have changed over the past four decades and (2) how the social factors often associated with marijuana legalization attitudes have changed over the same period. Results indicate that over one-third of Americans now believe marijuana should be made legal. These pro-legalization attitudes are at their highest …

What Makes Them Click? Applying The Rational Choice Perspective To The Hacking Underground, Michael Bachmann Jan 2008

What Makes Them Click? Applying The Rational Choice Perspective To The Hacking Underground, Michael Bachmann

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increasing dependence of modern societies, industries, and individuals on information technology and computer networks renders them ever more vulnerable to attacks on critical IT infrastructures. While the societal threat posed by hackers and other types of cyber-criminals has been growing significantly in the last decade, main-stream criminology has only recently begun to realize the significance of this threat. Cyber-criminology is slowly emerging as a subfield of criminological study and has yet to overcome many of the problems other areas of criminological research have already mastered. Aside from substantial methodological and theoretical problems, cyber-criminology currently also suffers from the scarcity …

Consensus Mutagenesis Reveals That Non-Helical Regions Influence Thermal Stability Of Horseradish Peroxidase., Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan Jan 2008

Consensus Mutagenesis Reveals That Non-Helical Regions Influence Thermal Stability Of Horseradish Peroxidase., Barry Ryan, CiaráN Fagan

Articles

The enzyme horseradish peroxidase has many uses in biotechnology but a stabilized derivative would have even wider applicability. To enhance thermal stability, we applied consensus mutagenesis (used successfully with other proteins) to recombinant horseradish peroxidase and generated five single-site mutants. Unexpectedly, these mutations had greater effects on steady-state kinetics than on thermal stability. Only two mutants (T102A, T110V) marginally exceeded the wild type’s thermal stability (4% and 10% gain in half- life at 50oC respectively); the others (Q106R, Q107D, I180F) were less stable than wild type. Stability of a five-fold combination mutant matched that of Q106R, the least-stable single mutant. …

Focus On Batson: Let The Cameras Roll, Mimi Samuel

Faculty Articles

While the Supreme Court outlawed discrimination in jury selection over 40 years ago, both empirical studies and candid interviews show that lawyers routinely rely on characteristics such as race, gender, and religion in striking prospective jurors. In large part, this practice continues because, when challenged, attorneys proffer non-verbal factors such as facial expressions, inattentiveness, eye contact (or lack thereof), or even laughing or coughing to justify their peremptory strikes. Without a way to assess the validity of these reasons, the trial judge and then the appellate court on review, have little ability to enforce the anti-discrimination prohibition set forth in …

You Are Not In Kansas Anymore: Orientation Programs Can Help Students Fly Over The Rainbow, Paula Lustbader Jan 2008

You Are Not In Kansas Anymore: Orientation Programs Can Help Students Fly Over The Rainbow, Paula Lustbader

Faculty Articles

Analogizing Oz to Law School, this article discusses the role of orientation in the law school curriculum and offers implementation strategies to develop an effective orientation. An effective and comprehensive orientation program for law school would have many goals: it should attempt to construct the profession as a calling; create syntactical, substantive, and pedagogical context; communicate care and model empathy and compassion; cultivate community to promote mutual respect, cultural competence, and interdependence; and confirm student self-confidence. In addition to explaining why these are important goals, the article explores possible ways of achieving those goals. It ends with models of different …

Documenting Gender, Dean Spade Jan 2008

Documenting Gender, Dean Spade

Faculty Articles

This article provides an analysis of gender reclassification policies - policies that determine when an administrative agency will change an individual's gender marker on its records - in three contexts: policies related to placement in gender-segregated facilities, policies related to changing gender marker on ID, and policies related to the state provision of healthcare that is prohibited based on the gender on record for the person seeking care. The article looks at the significant variation in these policies across agencies to demonstrate the instability of gender as a category of identity verification and to ask whether the assumed usefulness of …

The Terrorism Exception To Asylum: Managing The Uncertainty In Status Determination, Won Kidane Jan 2008

The Terrorism Exception To Asylum: Managing The Uncertainty In Status Determination, Won Kidane

Faculty Articles

The Immigration and Nationality Act ("INA "), as it must, excludes a terrorist from receiving asylum. The substantive criteria, and the adjudicative procedures set forth under the INA for the identification of the undeserving terrorist inevitably exclude those who are neither terrorists nor otherwise undeserving. Such unintended consequences are perhaps unavoidable in any well-conceived statutory scheme. What is disconcerting is, however the margin of the possible error in the application of this statutory scheme. Those who may be excluded by the application of these provisions are often not those who are supposed to be excluded as terrorists. Moreover, the existing …

Differential Dynamic Properties Of Scleroderma Fibroblasts In Response To Perturbation Of Environmental Stimuli, Momiao Xiong, Frank C. Arnett, Xinjian Guo, Hao Xiong, Xiaodong Zhou Jan 2008

Differential Dynamic Properties Of Scleroderma Fibroblasts In Response To Perturbation Of Environmental Stimuli, Momiao Xiong, Frank C. Arnett, Xinjian Guo, Hao Xiong, Xiaodong Zhou

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Diseases are believed to arise from dysregulation of biological systems (pathways) perturbed by environmental triggers. Biological systems as a whole are not just the sum of their components, rather ever-changing, complex and dynamic systems over time in response to internal and external perturbation. In the past, biologists have mainly focused on studying either functions of isolated genes or steady-states of small biological pathways. However, it is systems dynamics that play an essential role in giving rise to cellular function/dysfunction which cause diseases, such as growth, differentiation, division and apoptosis. Biological phenomena of the entire organism are not only determined by …

This paper reports on a research project conducted at the Advanced Clinical Skills Centre, University of Auckland, to determine whether the provision of a carefully engineered integrated virtual reality simulator for male and female urinary catheter insertion would increase student confidence levels and competency for those two skills. We present a literature review that demonstrates the increasing importance of simulation in medical education whilst detailing the perceived benefits and drawbacks of using simulations in medical education. We then present our research methodology including student numbers, procedures followed during the research, forms of evaluation carried out during the research and the …

The Work-Family Conflict: An Essay On Employers, Men And Responsibility, Michael Selmi Jan 2008

The Work-Family Conflict: An Essay On Employers, Men And Responsibility, Michael Selmi

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper, prepared for a symposium held at the University of St. Thomas Law School, explores an issue that has been largely neglected in the work-family debate, namely why the burden should be on employers to change their practices rather than on men to change theirs. Many of the policy proposals designed to facilitate the balancing of work and family demands require employers to alter their practices by creating part-time work, providing paid leave, or devising ways to limit the penalties women face for taking extended leave. At the same time, the reluctance of men to change their behavior, which …

Data Mining And The Security-Liberty Debate, Daniel J. Solove Jan 2008

Data Mining And The Security-Liberty Debate, Daniel J. Solove

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

In this essay, written for a symposium on surveillance for the University of Chicago Law Review, I examine some common difficulties in the way that liberty is balanced against security in the context of data mining. Countless discussions about the trade-offs between security and liberty begin by taking a security proposal and then weighing it against what it would cost our civil liberties. Often, the liberty interests are cast as individual rights and balanced against the security interests, which are cast in terms of the safety of society as a whole. Courts and commentators defer to the government's assertions about …

Conceiving Equity: The Paradox Surrounding The Contraception Crisis In America, Meghann Diane Ainsworth Jan 2008

Conceiving Equity: The Paradox Surrounding The Contraception Crisis In America, Meghann Diane Ainsworth

Honors Theses

Much of the controversy surrounding reproductive rights in the United States is mainly concentrated on abortion; however, an equally significant reproductive concern that sometimes goes unnoticed is the current contraception crisis in this countr>^ Pro-life and conservative right wing groups have surreptitiously launched a propaganda campaign to distort contraceptive information, leading many Americans to believe that contraception is unsafe, anti-family, and a form of abortion. These assertions are complete fabrications created to gain followers. The pro-choice side advocates the truths that contraception is safe and effective, supportive of families, and is not scientifically or medically considered a form of …

Emerging Policy And Practice Issues (2007), Steven L. Schooner, Danielle M. Conway

GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works

This paper, presented at the West Government Contracts Year in Review Conference (covering 2007), attempts to identify the key trends and issues for 2008 in U.S. federal procurement. We bemoan the absence of attention to significant issues by the current Presidential candidates, critique the leadership vacuum that sustains the longstanding and increasingly critical acquisition workforce shortage, and discuss the potentially active legislative agenda in light of the now-Final Report of the Acquisition Advisory Panel (AAP), a blue-ribbon commission mandated by Section 1423 of the Services Acquisition Reform Act (SARA). We also discuss the dramatic post-2000 trend in increased federal procurement …
