"The Persistent And Muddy Dispute": How The Facial/As-Applied Distinction Creates Problems For Constitutional Litigants, Sean P. Wilson Feb 2026

"The Persistent And Muddy Dispute": How The Facial/As-Applied Distinction Creates Problems For Constitutional Litigants, Sean P. Wilson

Duke Law Journal

The distinction between facial and as-applied challenges continues to play a central role in constitutional litigation, including at the Supreme Court. Yet, the distinction and its related rules have long suffered from a lack of doctrinal clarity and consistency. This Note sets out a descriptive taxonomy of three problems facing constitutional litigants because of the murkiness surrounding the facial/as-applied distinction.

First, the “Doctrinal-Test Problem” refers to the fact that many constitutional doctrines appear to require the courts to engage in facial adjudication, even if a litigant wishes to bring an as-applied claim. Thus, as-applied litigants are forced into facial challenges, …

Supervising The Omnipresent Casino: Evaluating The Role Of State And Local Regulation In Stemming Youth Addiction To Sports Gambling, Matthew Connor Flink Feb 2026

Supervising The Omnipresent Casino: Evaluating The Role Of State And Local Regulation In Stemming Youth Addiction To Sports Gambling, Matthew Connor Flink

Duke Law Journal

Since 2018, state legalization of sports betting and the industry’s corresponding proliferation has driven an epidemic of youth addiction. Current state legislation and regulations do little to combat youth addiction. Many legal scholars emphasize the value that a federal regulatory regime would provide to reign in youth sports betting. This Note explores the value that state and local government can have in the sports gambling space. To illustrate the unique importance of state and local legislation and regulation of sports betting, this Note analogizes to another addictive product with a history of youth addiction: nicotine.

Nicotine has been a regulatory …

Balancing Acts: Gender Parity Law And Cultural Boundaries In Senegal, Seulgie Lim Feb 2026

Balancing Acts: Gender Parity Law And Cultural Boundaries In Senegal, Seulgie Lim

All Faculty Scholarship

This article investigates the intersection of global gender equality norms with local contexts, focusing on Senegal’s implementation of the 2010 gender parity law. Despite the global trend towards electoral gender quotas, the effectiveness and societal acceptance of these measures vary significantly. Through a critical examination of existing literature on gender quotas and an analysis of the parity law’s reception in Senegal, this article explores the nuanced dynamics between legislative measures and societal norms. It argues that, while gender quotas can enhance women’s visibility in politics, deeply ingrained cultural and religious norms may undermine the more substantive impact of such legislated …

Nonenzymatic Glucose Biosensor Based On Selective Reduction Of Silver Ions, Maryam Sarlak, Shankar B. Rananavare Feb 2026

Nonenzymatic Glucose Biosensor Based On Selective Reduction Of Silver Ions, Maryam Sarlak, Shankar B. Rananavare

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

A nonenzymatic conductivity-based glucose biosensor, reported here, designed for potential noninvasive measurement in accessible biofluids such as saliva, sweat, and tears. The sensor exploits a classic Tollens’ silvering process that deposits metallic silver on a sensitized surface via a quantitative, selective reduction of silver ions by glucose. Of the two surface sensitization methods used, the self-assembled bifunctional thiol/silane surfactant yields a more stable and sensitive sensor than tin(II) chloride. The conductometric sensor consists of two spiral interdigitated silver electrodes fabricated by lithography and wet etching. The sensor impedance changes after selective metallic silver deposition between the electrodes. The sensor exhibits …

Background: Digital health interventions (DHIs) can extend the reach of disease prevention interventions; however, few are evidence-based, theoretically grounded, or developed for high-risk youth and families. Co-design approaches engage end users in the design and development of the DHI, which can lead to increased accessibility and engagement.

Objective: This study aimed to describe the adaptation of an evidence-based diabetes prevention program for remote, digital delivery.

Methods: The adaptation of the in-person intervention was guided by a modified Inclusive Digital Health Intervention Design to Promote Health Equity framework and conducted in collaboration with Hispanic adolescents (n=23) with obesity (BMI ≥95th percentile) …

Teaching The Science Of Reading Critically, Cheu-Jey Lee Feb 2026

Teaching The Science Of Reading Critically, Cheu-Jey Lee

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

In light of the increasing popularity of the science of reading (SOR) and its influence on literacy education, this paper is concerned with how to teach SOR critically without embracing it blindly. The definition of SOR, along with its limitations, is presented first. Then, critical reading is argued to be missing in SOR and its broadened/improved variations. Finally, an instructional example is provided to illustrate how to teach SOR critically through a whole-part-whole hermeneutic reconstructive process. This example demonstrates that the foundational literacy skills emphasized in SOR and the critical reading skills fostered through the four dimensions of the critical …

Advanced User Interaction Logging For Recommendation Model Enhancements, Tamojit Chatterjee, Kanishk Mishra Feb 2026

Advanced User Interaction Logging For Recommendation Model Enhancements, Tamojit Chatterjee, Kanishk Mishra

Defensive Publications Series

Traditional user interaction logging processes typically record discrete events based on user interactions with a user interface of an application. The user interactions may include user clicks or selections of interactive user interface elements (e.g., click events) and/or user impressions of content (e.g., impression events) provided by the user interface. Interactive user interface elements may include, but are not limited to, buttons, selectable icons, advertisement cards, and content cards. For example, a user impression may occur when a content item (e.g., an advertisement, an image, a video, etc.) is rendered in the user interface (e.g., in a respective content card) …

How Does Pattern Of Bone Healing Affect The Strain Of Plate Implant Via Frequency Detection? A Biomechanical Cadaveric Study, Chavarin Amarase, Chanyaphan Virulsri, Pairat Tangpornprasert, Pisitpong Chancharoen, Saran Tantavisut

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal

Background: Detecting bone union is a crucial process in treating bone fractures to prevent complications, including implant failure and bone nonunion. Nowadays, there are many methods and new innovative devices for detecting bone union through strain measurements, such as strain gauges, fluid level displacement, contrast media, and frequency changes. There is also a trend toward increasing these methods in the future. However, the patterns of bone healing studied with these methods still do not provide a standard for determining the true bone healing process. The aim of this study is to identify the most appropriate bone healing pattern for …

The Effect Of Social Media On Orthodontics: The Patient And Practitioner Perspective, Corban Ward, Jacob Marx, Man Hung, Samuel Dyal, Alicia Parry

Annual Research Symposium

Introduction Social media now shapes how people find information, connect and form identity. It increasingly influences cultural standards around  health and appearance. In orthodontics, these platforms are reshaping public perceptions, attitudes and treatment decisions. This review synthesizes existing research on social media’s impact on how people view and choose orthodontic care.

Methods A PRISMA guided review searched PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science for  peer-reviewed English-language studies published between 2015 and 2025. Using terms such as “social media,” “orthodontic treatment,” “dental esthetics,” “perception,” we included studies assessing how social media shapes public beliefs, behaviors, and  self-perception related to orthodontic care. …

Exploring The Efficacy Of Storytelling In Education About Climate Change, Nina Adjanin, Srijana Katuwal, Heidi Sevestre, Gordon Brooks

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

From bedtime tales to digital narratives, stories wield unparalleled influence, shaping perceptions, and fostering empathy. Through mediums like social media and digital platforms, storytelling becomes a tool for advocacy, amplifying voices, and catalyzing social change. In this qualitative study, 107 higher education students from diverse backgrounds participated. The purpose of this study was to uncover salient beliefs about climate change stories on popular social media platforms among full-time college students. The results are based on three key components of the theory of planned behavior (TPB): affective beliefs, normative beliefs, and control beliefs. The respondents expressed both positive and negative attitudes …

Curriculum Materials Cataloged For Browsing, Michelle Emanuel Feb 2026

Curriculum Materials Cataloged For Browsing, Michelle Emanuel

Mississippi Libraries

When the University of Mississippi Libraries acquired a collection of state-adopted school textbooks for K-12 from its School of Education, a decision was made to catalog the collection for browsing to anticipate the needs of its primary users, both “in service” and “pre-service” teachers. The textbooks would be grouped according to their grade level, and cuttered by subject area, instead of being classed according to its subject area. As the collection would be integrated into the regular circulating collection, and not into a curriculum materials center, issues arose for both technical services and access services throughout the process, from cataloging …

Slis Notes: Building Advocacy, Stacy Creel, Sarah Mangrum

Mississippi Libraries

In 2016, the Pew Research Center found that 66 percent of adults believe that the public library has a positive role in their communities and believe in the educational role of libraries. Beyond education, respondents felt that libraries had a role in supporting businesses, technology, and other services, and were important parts of the community (Pew, 2016). Libraries continue to be “among the most trusted public institutions in our democratic society. Nevertheless, public libraries are struggling to regulate the library space as a space for all in democratic societies with increasing polarization” (Yamagishi, Koizumi, & Larsen, 2024, p. 1359). As …
