Finding The Field Transfer Matrix Of Scattering Media, Thomas Kohlgraf-Owens, Aristide Dogariu
Finding The Field Transfer Matrix Of Scattering Media, Thomas Kohlgraf-Owens, Aristide Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
When illuminated by temporally coherent light, multiply scattering media produce speckle patterns that in many situations are unpolarized on spatial averaging. As a result, the underlying field statistics are assumed to be Gaussian and information about them can be extracted from intensity-intensity correlations. However, such an approach cannot be applied to any scattering medium where the interaction leads to partially developed speckle patterns. We present a general procedure to directly measure the field transfer matrix of a linear medium without regard to the scattering regime. Experimental results demonstrate the ability of our procedure to correctly measure field transfer matrices and …

Numb Endocytic Adapter Proteins Regulate The Transport And Processing Of The Amyloid Precursor Protein In An Isoform-Dependent Manner - Implications For Alzheimer Disease Pathogenesis, George A. Kyriazis, Zelan Wei, Miriam Vandermey, Dong-Gyu Jo, Ouyang Xin, Mark P. Mattson, Sic L. Chan
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease is the aberrant processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) to generate amyloid beta-peptide (A beta), the principle component of amyloid plaques. The cell fate determinant Numb is a phosphotyrosine binding domain (PTB)-containing endocytic adapter protein that interacts with the carboxyl-terminal domain of APP. The physio-logical relevance of this interaction is unknown. Mammals produce four alternatively spliced variants of Numb that differ in the length of their PTB and proline-rich region. In the current study, we determined the influence of the four human Numb isoforms on the intracellular trafficking and processing of APP. …

Extreme Chirped Pulse Oscillator Operating In The Nanosecond Stretched Pulse Regime, Shinwook Lee, Dimitrios Mandridis, Peter J. Delfyett Jr.
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
An eXtreme Chirped Pulse Oscillator (XCPO) implemented with a Theta cavity and based on a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is presented for generating 10ns frequency-swept pulses and 3.6ps compressed pulses directly from the oscillator. In this experiment, we show the two distinct characteristics of the XCPO which are the scalability of the output energy and the mode-locked spectrum. By using these characteristics, we obtain a pulse energy of 58.4pJ from the stretched pulse and a mode-locked optical bandwidth of 14.6nm (10dB) directly from the oscillator. The laser cavity design allows for low repetition rate operation < 100MHz, as well. The cavity, significantly, reduces nonlinear carrier dynamics, integrated self phase modulation (SPM), and fast gain recovery in an SOA. Due to the laser's ability to generate directly frequency-swept pulses from the oscillator, this oscillator can be used for high speed frequency-swept optical coherence tomography (OCT) and time-stretched photonic analog to digital converters (P-ADC).
Electrically Tunable Wettability Of Liquid Crystal/Polymer Composite Films, Yi-Hsin Lin, Hongwen Ren, Yung-Hsun Wu, Shin-Tson Wu, Yue Zhao, Jiyu Fang, Hung-Chun Lin
Electrically Tunable Wettability Of Liquid Crystal/Polymer Composite Films, Yi-Hsin Lin, Hongwen Ren, Yung-Hsun Wu, Shin-Tson Wu, Yue Zhao, Jiyu Fang, Hung-Chun Lin
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
An electrically tunable wettability in a liquid crystal/polymer composite film is demonstrated, in which liquid crystal molecules are anchored among polymer grains. The tunable wettability of the composite films originates from the reorientation of the anchored liquid-crystal molecules, which is switched by an in-plane electric field with squared pulses of voltages. These liquid crystal/polymer composite films with electrically tunable wettability have potential applications in polarizer-free displays, ink-jet printing, microfluidic devices, and lab-on-a-chip.

Androgen Regulates Cdc6 Transcription Through Interactions Between Androgen Receptor And E2f Transcription Factor In Prostate Cancer Cells, Ipsita Mallik, Monica Davila, Tenekua Tapia, Brian Schanen, Ratna Chakrabarti
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Androgen receptor plays a critical role in the development and maintenance of cancers in the prostate. Earlier, we have shown that Cdc6, a regulatory protein for initiation of DNA replication, is down regulated in androgen-insensitive prostate cancer cells. In this report, we studied the involvement of androgen, mediated through androgen receptor (AR) in regulation of Cdc6 expression. Our results demonstrated that androgen treatment stimulated Cdc6 expression in xenograft tumors and androgen-sensitive prostate cancer cells. We also showed that androgen treatment stimulated Cdc6 transcription through possible interaction of AR with the ARE sequence in the Cdc6 promoter and that the stimulatory …
Adaptive Dielectric Liquid Lens, Hongwen Ren, Haiqing Xianyu, Su Xu, Shin-Tson Wu
Adaptive Dielectric Liquid Lens, Hongwen Ren, Haiqing Xianyu, Su Xu, Shin-Tson Wu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
A tunable-focus liquid lens using dielectrophoretic effect is demonstrated. When a voltage is applied to a dielectric liquid droplet, the generated electric field inside the droplet is inhomogeneous. As a result, the liquid bears a dielectric force and its surface profile can be reshaped which causes the focal length to change. Adaptive lenses with different apertures are fabricated and their performances evaluated. In comparison to the patterned-electrode liquid lenses, our lens uses continuous electrode which is much simpler for fabrication.
Analytical Fitting Model For Rough-Surface Brdf, Ingmar G. E. Renhorn, Glenn D. Boreman
Analytical Fitting Model For Rough-Surface Brdf, Ingmar G. E. Renhorn, Glenn D. Boreman
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
A physics-based model is developed for rough surface BRDF, taking into account angles of incidence and scattering, effective index, surface autocovariance, and correlation length. Shadowing is introduced on surface correlation length and reflectance. Separate terms are included for surface scatter, bulk scatter and retroreflection. Using the FindFit function in Mathematica, the functional form is fitted to BRDF measurements over a wide range of incident angles. The model has fourteen fitting parameters; once these are fixed, the model accurately describes scattering data over two orders of magnitude in BRDF without further adjustment. The resulting analytical model is convenient for numerical computations.

Demonstration Of Three-Dimensional Optical Imaging Using A Confocal Microscope Based On A Liquid-Crystal Electronic Lens, Nabeel A. Riza, Mumtaz Sheikh, Grady Webb-Wood, Pieter G. Kik
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Three-dimensional (3-D) imaging is demonstrated using an electronically controlled liquid crystal (LC) optical lens to accomplish a no-moving-parts depth-section scanning in a modified commercial 3-D confocal microscope. Specifically, 3-D views of a standard CDC blood vessel (enclosed in a glass slide) have been obtained using the modified confocal microscope operating at the red 633-nm laser wavelength. The image sizes over a 25-mu m axial scan depth were 50 x 50 mu m and 80 x 80 mu m, using 60x and 20x micro-objectives, respectively. The transverse motion step was 0.1 mu m for the 60x data and 0.2 mu m …
Stochastic Sensing Of Relative Anisotropic Polarizabilities, S. Sukhov, D. Haefner, A. Dogariu
Stochastic Sensing Of Relative Anisotropic Polarizabilities, S. Sukhov, D. Haefner, A. Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We describe the concept of stochastic scattering polarimetry. This method allows determination of the anisotropic polarizability of a scattering object using a statistical analysis of the polarimetrically measured intensity distributions in the wave zone (far field). We show that this anisotropic polarizability may be determined even in situations where the state of polarization of the incident field is not known. The efficiency of the recovering procedure is demonstrated by several examples of light scattering in both far- and near-field geometries.
Coupled Dipole Method For Modeling Optical Properties Of Large-Scale Random Media, S. Sukhov, D. Haefner, A. Dogariu
Coupled Dipole Method For Modeling Optical Properties Of Large-Scale Random Media, S. Sukhov, D. Haefner, A. Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We present an extension of the coupled dipole approximation technique to model optical properties of large-scale slabs of homogeneous and inhomogeneous materials. This method is based on a modification of the Green's function to take into account the interaction between dipoles located at arbitrary distances within the slab. This method allows modeling of various aspects of the structural morphology of composite materials, including component size and spatial distribution as well as surface roughness effects. Our procedure provides an adequate description of far-field optical properties such as the specular and diffuse reflection of light.

Polarization Selective Electro-Optic Polymer Waveguide Devices By Direct Electron Beam Writing, Haishan Sun, Antao Chen, Benjamin C. Olbricht, Joshua A. Davies, Philip A. Sullivan, Yi Liao, Zhenwei Shi, Jingdong Luo, Alex K. -Y. Jen, Larry R. Dalton
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
A novel technique for the fabrication of polarization selective electro-optic polymer waveguide devices with direct electron beam writing was described. Birefringence induced by the electric field poling in the electro-optic polymer film was erased in the electron beam exposed regions. The formed waveguides had stronger confinement for the light polarized along the poling direction. High fabrication resolution on the 100 nm scale or smaller could be achieved. Fabrication of polymer polarizer and polarization selective microring resonators with this technique was reported. The highest polarization extinction ratio was measured to be 21.4 dB.

Numerical Analysis Of Acoustic Wave Propagation In Layered Carbon Nanofiber Reinforced Polymer Composites, Li Sun, Yong Yu, Gangbing Song, Jihua Gou
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Polymer composites reinforced by carbon nanofibers (CNFs) in the form of paper sheet show significant vibration and acoustic damping improvement when compared to pure matrix materials. Without looking into the microscopic energy dissipation mechanisms, this paper analyzes the wave propagation in the composites from a macroscopic point of view. The CNF nanocomposites in this study were treated as stacking of alternating layers of pure polymer and CNF reinforced polymer. Analyses of acoustic wave propagation focused oil revealing the effects of acoustic impedance discontinuity at the interfaces of the layered structure. Plane wave transmission coefficient has been calculated as a function …

Optical Spatial Solitons At The Interface Between Two Dissimilar Periodic Media: Theory And Experiment, S. Suntsov, K. G. Makris, D. N. Christodoulides, G. I. Stegeman, R. Morandotti, M. Volatier, V. Aimez, R. Arès, E. H. Yang, G. Salamo
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Discrete spatial solitons traveling along the interface between two dissimilar one-dimensional arrays of waveguides were observed for the first time. Two interface solitons were found theoretically, each one with a peak in a different boundary channel. One evolves into a soliton from a linear mode at an array separation larger than a critical separation where-as the second soliton always exhibits a power threshold. These solitons exhibited different power thresholds which depended on the characteristics of the two lattices. For excitation of single channels near and at the boundary, the evolution behavior with propagation distance indicates that the solitons peaked near …
Free-Space Optical System Performance For Laser Beam Propagation Through Non-Kolmogorov Turbulence, Italo Toselli, Larry C. Andrews, Ronald L. Phillips, Valter Ferrero
Free-Space Optical System Performance For Laser Beam Propagation Through Non-Kolmogorov Turbulence, Italo Toselli, Larry C. Andrews, Ronald L. Phillips, Valter Ferrero
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
It is well know that free-space laser system performance is limited by atmospheric turbulence. Most theoretical treatments have been described for many years by Kolmogorov's power spectral density model because of its simplicity. Unfortunately, several experiments have been reported recently that show that the Kolmogorov theory is sometimes incomplete to describe atmospheric statistics properly, in particular, in portions of the troposphere and stratosphere. We present a non-Kolmogorov power spectrum that uses a generalized exponent instead of constant standard exponent value 11/3, and a generalized amplitude factor instead of constant value 0.033. Using this new spectrum in weak turbulence, we carry …

Single-Frequency-Mode Q-Switched Nd : Yag And Er : Glass Lasers Controlled By Volume Bragg Gratings, N. Vorobiev, L. Glebov, V. Smirnov
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
This paper presents the results of experimental studies on Q-switched flash-lamp pumped Nd:YAG and Er:glass lasers with resonators formed by volume Bragg gratings. This novel design results in single-frequency mode operation with millijoules pulse energy. The mode selection is performed only by volume Bragg gratings that dramatically simplifies laser design.
The Effective Interdiffusivity, Structure, And Magnetic Properties Of Fe/Pt (N) Multilayer Films, Bo Yao, Kevin R. Coffey
The Effective Interdiffusivity, Structure, And Magnetic Properties Of Fe/Pt (N) Multilayer Films, Bo Yao, Kevin R. Coffey
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
This paper reports the influence of the deposition temperature and the wavelength of the periodicity on the effective interdiffusivity, microstructure, and magnetic properties of annealed [Fe/Pt](n) multilayer films (MLs). It was found that both the deposition temperature and periodicity of [Fe/Pt](n) MLs have a significant influence on the effective Fe-Pt interdiffusivity, microstructure, and magnetic properties of the annealed films. It was also observed that the magnitude of the effective interdiffusion coefficient, the L1(0) grain size, and the long-range order parameter were positively correlated. This result suggests that nonequilibrium reaction kinetics are desirable for the reduced temperature formation of the L1(0) …

Influence Of Non-Markovian Relaxation Processes On Self-Induced Transparency: Memory Function Theory For Optical Solitons, G. T. Adamashvili, D. J. Kaup, A. Knorr, C. Weber
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The influence of transverse relaxation on the resonance soliton (2 pi hyperbolic-secant pulse) in solids is considered. It is shown that memory effects can be considered in terms of generalized non-Markovian optical Bloch equations. The equations of self-induced transparency with a memory function are presented. Explicit forms for the first-order effects of this relaxation on the frequency shift and the pulse height of a resonant 2 pi soliton in solids are given and discussed. It is shown that memory effects do lead to a qualitative change in the dynamics of the influence of transverse relaxations on a 2 pi pulse …
Simulation Of The Stokes Vector In Inhomogeneous Precipitation, Ian Stuart Adams, Peter Gaiser, W. Linwood Jones
Simulation Of The Stokes Vector In Inhomogeneous Precipitation, Ian Stuart Adams, Peter Gaiser, W. Linwood Jones
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
The large absorption and scattering cross sections of liquid and frozen hydrometeors, respectively, introduce appreciable signatures to measured polarized brightness temperatures, degrading the retrieval of other geophysical parameters such as near-surface ocean winds. In particular, the retrieval of wind direction requires precise knowledge of polarization. This study investigates the fully polarized atmospheric contribution of precipitation and compares these effects with the current sensitivities of passive wind vector retrieval algorithms. A realistic microphysical cloud model supplies atmospheric parameters, including hydrometeor water contents, which are input into a vector radiative transfer model. Scattering is handled using a reverse Monte Carlo method. Radiances …

Femtosecond Laser Photo-Response Of Ge23sb7s70 Films, Troy Anderson, Laeticia Petit, Nathan Calie, Jiyeon Choi, Juejun Hu, Anu Agarwal, Lionel Kimberling, Kathleen Richardson, Martin Richardson
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
Ternary chalcogenide glass films from identical parent bulk glasses were prepared by thermal evaporation (TE) and pulsed laser deposition (PLD) and subjected to 810-nm femtosecond laser exposure at both kHz and MHz repetition rates. The exposure-induced modification on the glass film's surface profile, refractive index, and structural properties were shown to be a function of laser irradiance, the number of laser pulses per focal spot, and repetition rate. Film response was shown to be related to deposition technique-related density and the number of glass bonds within the irradiated focal volume. The induced changes resulted from a reduction in glass network …

Identifying Non-Stationarities In Random Em Fields: Are Speckles Really Disturbing?, John Broky, Jeremy Ellis, Aristide Dogariu
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
In dealing with random EM fields, ensemble averaging is an ubiquitous procedure. However, we demonstrate that spatial non-stationarities such as enhanced backscattering can be identified even from one single realization (snapshot) of the wave interaction with a random medium. Fourth-order correlations between field components at two different spatial points are shown to provide the necessary information.

Self-Healing Properties Of Optical Airy Beams, John Broky, Georgios A. Siviloglou, Aristide Dogariu, Demetrios N. Christodoulides
Faculty Bibliography 2000s
We investigate both theoretically and experimentally the self-healing properties of accelerating Airy beams. We show that this class of waves tends to reform during propagation in spite of the severity of the imposed perturbations. In all occasions the reconstruction of these beams is interpreted through their internal transverse power flow. The robustness of these optical beams in scattering and turbulent environments is also studied experimentally. Our observations are in excellent agreement with numerical simulations.
Discerning Migration In The Archaeological Record: A Case Study At Chichã©N Itzã¡, Andrea Slusser
Discerning Migration In The Archaeological Record: A Case Study At Chichã©N Itzã¡, Andrea Slusser
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Migration, as a theory to explain aspects in the archaeological record, has fallen out of favor in Mesoamerican archaeology, possibly due to a lack of a standard definition or description of migration. Migration as an explanation of change in Maya civilizations has been around since the 1950's and the culture-history era of American archaeology. Since the early 1990's, migration has been treated as a process, one that can be discerned in pre-literate cultures as well as historical ones. Models of the migration process are being developed and tested. One type of migration, elite dominance migration, is a particularly suitable process …

Study Of Symbolic Expressions In Peking Opera'scostumes And Lyrics, Yiman Li
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis represents an analysis of symbolic expressions used to convey traditional Chinese cultural values in marital relations as expressed through costumes and lyrics in Peking Opera plays and performances. Two symbols, dragon and phoenix, were selected from the costume collection. Four symbols--bird, tiger, wild goose, and dragon--were selected from compilations of lyrics. These symbols were selected because they expressed Chinese core cultural values, an imperial ideology based on Confucian thoughts, which were practiced rigidly during Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Modeling Theory is applied to argue that dragon and phoenix as visual symbols convey ideas about characters' background, marital relationship, social …

Planning For The Future: Florida Community Colleges' Preparations For The Advent Of High Definition Television, Sharon Wyly
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Throughout the literature, researchers reported on the problems that post-secondary institutions have had with technology (Birchard, 2001; Green, 2003; Starrett & Rogers, 2003;). Given limited budgets and the need to train faculty and staff, many colleges have struggled to find a way to use technology to enhance, not hinder, pedagogy (Cuban, 2001; Oppenheimer, 2003). This study was conducted to examine the impact of the federally mandated change in the television standard to high definition television (HDTV) on Florida's community colleges. Surveys were sent to the chief technology officers of the 28 community colleges in Florida. Additionally, eight interviews were conducted …

Educational Handheld Video: Examining Shot Composition, Graphic Design, And Their Impact On Learning, Jason Hutchens
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Formal features of video such as shot composition and graphic design can weigh heavily on the success or failure of educational videos. Many studies have assessed the proper use of these techniques given the psychological expectations that viewers have for video programming (Hawkins et al., 2002; Kenny, 2002; Lang, Zhou, Schwardtz, Bolls, & Potter, 2000; McCain, Chilberg, & Wakshlag, 1977; McCain & Repensky, 1972; Miller, 2005; Morris, 1984; Roe, 1998; Schmitt, Anderson, & Collins, 1999; Sherman & Etling, 1991; Tannenbaum & Fosdick, 1960; Wagner, 1953). This study examined formal features within the context of the newly emerging distribution method of …

A Genre Of Collective Intelligence: Blogs As Intertextual, Reciprocal, And Pedagogical, Rachel Gramer
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the rhetorical features of blogs that lend them dialogic strength as an online genre through the lens of Mikhail Bakhtin's theories of speech genres, utterances, and dialogism. As a relatively new online genre, blogs stem from previous genres (in print and online as well as verbal), but their emergence as a popular form of expression in our current culture demands attention to how blogs also offer us different rhetorical opportunities to meet our changing social exigencies as online subjects in the 21st century. This thesis was inspired by questions about how blogs redefine the rhetorical situation to …

Forensic Analysis Of Automobile Paints By Atomic And Molecular Spectroscopic Methods And Statistical Data Analyses, Erin Mcintee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The analysis of 110 automotive paint samples was conducted for the research presented here. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was the central instrument utilized for analysis although scanning electron microscopy / energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy - attenuated total reflection (FTIR-ATR) analyses were also performed. Two separate methods of LIBS analysis of samples were used: a cross sectional analysis and a drill down analysis. SEM/EDS analysis focused on the cross section while FTIR-ATR analysis concentrated on the clearcoat layer. Several different data/statistical analyses were evaluated including principal components analysis (PCA), two tailed t-tests based on several …
