Behind The Black Box: Employer Accountability For Algorithmic Hiring Bias, Nicole Capp Mar 2026

Behind The Black Box: Employer Accountability For Algorithmic Hiring Bias, Nicole Capp

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

AI hiring tools are now ubiquitous in employment, promising efficiency, cost savings, and reduced human bias. Yet these systems often operate as “black boxes,” replicating or amplifying existing biases and raising significant legal concerns under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Even without discriminatory intent, AI trained on historical hiring data can produce disparate impacts, exposing employers to liability for outcomes they cannot fully understand or explain. Plaintiffs face steep challenges in litigating such claims, particularly in identifying specific practices, demonstrating causation, and proposing feasible alternatives. This article examines how AI perpetuates discrimination in hiring, analyzes the …

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

The plant virus known as Maize mosaic alphanucleorhabdovirus (MMV) is a persistent, propagative pathogen transmitted by the corn planthopper Peregrinus maidis Ashmead (Hemiptera: Delphacidae). It is the causal agent for a mosaic disease that can cause significant loss in corn yield. Currently, disease management is focused on controlling its insect vector population. The molecular mechanisms of virus transmission by the insect vector are not yet fully understood. Previously, P. maidis syntaxin 18 (PmSTX18) was identified as a receptor for MMV. PmSTX18 interacts with the viral glycoprotein and potentially facilitates MMV recognition and entry into the vector, enabling virus …

Farmers’ Perspectives Toward Organizing A Cotton Producers’ Union In Şanlıurfa, Türkiye, Ismail Efe, Mehmet Cançelik, Mehmet Reşit Sevinç

The Philippine Agricultural Scientist

This study examines the attitudes of cotton producers in Şanlıurfa toward establishing a producers’ union to address structural challenges in Türkiye’s leading cotton production region. Şanlıurfa contributes approximately 40% of Türkiye’s cotton output, yet lacks organizational frameworks for its nearly 20,000 producers who face significant risks including price volatility, high input costs, and limited market access. The research utilized primary data collected through face-to-face surveys with 165 cotton producers selected via convenience sampling. Data analysis employed descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis using Principal Component Analysis (PCA), independent samples t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. The findings revealed a significant paradox: while …

Text Messages To Improve Young Child Diets: Results From A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial In Kanchanpur, Nepal, Kenda Cunningham, Sidney Cech, Aman Sen Gupta, Pooja Pandey Rana, Debbie Humphries, Edward A. Frongillo Jr. Ph.D. Mar 2026

Text Messages To Improve Young Child Diets: Results From A Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trial In Kanchanpur, Nepal, Kenda Cunningham, Sidney Cech, Aman Sen Gupta, Pooja Pandey Rana, Debbie Humphries, Edward A. Frongillo Jr. Ph.D.

Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to test whether adding a text message campaign about the importance of eating eggs and other nutrition-related behaviours to an on-going package of large-scale, diverse social and behaviour change interventions would improve four types of nutrition-related knowledge and behaviour outcomes: child diets (egg consumption as the primary outcome), maternal diets, maternal nutrition knowledge, and maternal participation in additional interventions. The cluster-randomized controlled trial involved a repeat cross-sectional design, recruiting families with children 12–23 months of age at baseline and endline in one plains district of Nepal. Throughout the 1000-day period, 51 text messages were …

Digital Print Ordering System For Ugs, Han Nguyen Mar 2026

Digital Print Ordering System For Ugs, Han Nguyen

Graphic Communication

This project redesigns the UGS digital storefront to make ordering custom prints clearer and less confusing for students. Research showed that many delays happen because users submit incorrect files, such as wrong formats, low-resolution images, or missing fonts. To address this, I created an interactive prototype that guides users step-by-step through the ordering process and includes a built-in file checklist with simple export instructions. Instead of relying on a separate PDF guide, the new system supports users directly within the workflow, helping reduce errors and making the process smoother for both customers and UGS staffs.

Same, But Better: Modernizing A Professional Soccer Team’S Logo, Jessica A. Halladay Mar 2026

Same, But Better: Modernizing A Professional Soccer Team’S Logo, Jessica A. Halladay

Graphic Communication

Valencia CF is a historic soccer club with a highly recognizable crest, and this project focuses on modernizing that identity while preserving its core elements. Rather than creating a full rebrand, the project follows an identity evolution approach, refining the crest to improve clarity and adaptability across digital and physical applications. Guided by research in brand identity, social identity, and visual perception, the redesign focuses on four key elements: the bat, crest shape, typography, and soccer ball. Each component was simplified through iterative sketching and critique-based refinement to improve readability and consistency while maintaining recognizability. The final design demonstrates how …

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Sanitary environments that undergo frequent cleaning and disinfection may harbor microbial communities with potential health risks. While biofilms in healthcare settings are well studied, comparatively less is known about sink-drain microbiomes in public and educational buildings, where hundreds of people may interact with shared sink fixtures. This study characterized the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of sink-drain biofilm microbiomes in academic buildings. We sampled 16 sinks from two buildings (four floors each, with sinks closest and furthest to the bathroom entrance), which are cleaned daily with quaternary ammonium compound (QAC) disinfectants, during periods of low and high student traffic (during and …

Cataclysm Within The Court: The Bosnian Genocide Case And Its Implications On Historical Understanding Of Calamity, Alexandria Currier Mar 2026

Cataclysm Within The Court: The Bosnian Genocide Case And Its Implications On Historical Understanding Of Calamity, Alexandria Currier

The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Bosnian Genocide remains one of the most challenging cases within the history of modern conflict and calamity. As the first occurrence in which the International Court of Justice applied the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide to a state, the International Court of Justice's legal proceedings on the Bosnian Genocide set a new standard for the obligations of the international community to act in the occurrence of genocide. This research aims to clarify the nature of the 1992-1995 conflict between the nations of Serbia-Montenegro and Bosnia-Herzegovina using primary source documentation, modern commentary, and the …

Fostering An Equitable Scrum: A Conceptual Framework For Using Antiracist Enrollment Management Practices To Counter Job Market Discrimination, Aaron N. Taylor Mar 2026

Fostering An Equitable Scrum: A Conceptual Framework For Using Antiracist Enrollment Management Practices To Counter Job Market Discrimination, Aaron N. Taylor

AccessLex Institute Research

For most law students, attending law school is an investment. At stake are immense amounts of time and money spent pursuing the degree. The most desired payoff is a lucrative and fulfilling career. This chapter argues that law schools must adopt enrollment management practices that attempt to account for the job market their entering students will face at graduation. In proffering this argument, the chapter presents a conceptual framework for aligning class size targets to the future job market and proposes an equity-based approach to tuition discounting that accounts for job market racism. Graduates of color, particularly Black graduates, experience …

Free Speech Trapped In Amber: The Rise Of The 'History And Tradition' Test, From Unregulated Guns To Highly Regulated Speech, Matthew D. Bunker, Emily Erickson Mar 2026

Free Speech Trapped In Amber: The Rise Of The 'History And Tradition' Test, From Unregulated Guns To Highly Regulated Speech, Matthew D. Bunker, Emily Erickson

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

An insidious virus appears poised to invade First Amendment free speech doctrine. “History and tradition,” a deeply flawed variant of originalism, threatens to transform speech law from a rational enterprise, employing tiers of scrutiny to evaluate potential infringements on speech, to a random scavenger hunt through the distant past that could upend numerous vital First Amendment principles.

Traditionalism’s ascendence to the forefront of history-centric constitutional interpretation was heralded in three dramatic cases decided at the end of the U.S. Supreme Court’s October 2021 term. New York State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen elicited particular concern among First Amendment scholars, …

Does Article I Of The Constitution Prohibit The States From Creating Their Own Cryptocurrencies?, Kevin Fontenot Mar 2026

Does Article I Of The Constitution Prohibit The States From Creating Their Own Cryptocurrencies?, Kevin Fontenot

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The market for cryptocurrency (crypto) has exploded in size since the first cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, was created in 2009. As of September 4, 2024, the value of all existing cryptocurrency was $2.02 trillion. On November 14, 2024, this value reached a high of $3.2 trillion, apparently in response to the election of pro-crypto President Donald Trump. Despite the fact that cryptocurrencies have been at the forefront of many high profile scandals, consumers still flock to them. For example, celebrities including Hailey Welch (colloquially known as “Hawk Tuah girl”), Logan Paul, and Jason Derulo have been criticized for allegedly goading consumers into …

Confronting Imitation: Questioning Fair Use After Warhol, Genevieve Stegner-Freitag Mar 2026

Confronting Imitation: Questioning Fair Use After Warhol, Genevieve Stegner-Freitag

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

The Constitution’s Intellectual Property Clause (IP Clause) contains a mandated goal of “progress” for copyright. Efforts to address what progress means move between some understanding it to be a specific Enlightenment-oriented term, progress as a forward-moving, Judeo-Christian ideal, to others viewing the term as strictly economic, understanding the goal of copyright is to get as many different products in the market as possible. Defining what progress means in copyright law is a necessary step, as courts are increasingly considering market forces in granting or denying authorial property rights. This Note addresses what progress means, how imitative art factors in, and …

Beyond Equality To Belonging: The Missing Value In Equal Protection Law Involving Education, Danieli Evans Mar 2026

Beyond Equality To Belonging: The Missing Value In Equal Protection Law Involving Education, Danieli Evans

Washington Law Review

Belonging is a fundamental need without which people cannot function optimally. Accordingly, school belonging—students’ perceptions of mattering or feeling cared about, accepted, respected and valued by faculty, staff, and peers—impacts students’ well-being, academic motivation and outcomes.

Equal Protection jurisprudence governing education largely overlooks the value of school belonging. Instead, it centers on a formal conception of equality, or an “anti-classification” principle, which essentially prohibits purposeful discrimination based on a fixed set of suspect traits. This formalistic “anti-classification” approach permits many policies and practices that undermine students’ sense of school belonging and inhibits schools from taking certain measures to foster belonging. …

Mapping Child Care And Early Education Capacity To Needs In Massachusetts, Alan Clayton-Matthews, Christa M. Kelleher, Randy Albelda, Anne Douglass, Laurie Nsiah-Jefferson

Publications from the Center for Women in Politics and Public Policy

Massachusetts has made notable strides in expanding access to affordable, quality, licensed child care and early education in recent years. Ongoing robust state investment in the Commonwealth Cares for Children Grant Program, activities of the Healey-Driscoll Inter Agency Early Education and Child Care Task Force, and increased income eligibility for child care financial assistance to families with moderate incomes, among other initiatives, all help address persistent barriers to quality education and care at a price families can afford.

Yet the supply of licensed child care for infants, toddlers, and preschool children remains a formidable challenge to meeting the child care …
