Shadowy Aesthetics: The Cultural Front, Literary Judgments And Perceptions Of Mass Entertainment, Graham Barnfield Jan 2008

Shadowy Aesthetics: The Cultural Front, Literary Judgments And Perceptions Of Mass Entertainment, Graham Barnfield

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

Michael Denning's The Cultural Front: The Laboring of American Culture in the Twentieth Century was published in late 1996. There are numerous ways of reading its contribution to American cultural studies. Simply put, the book pursued a reading of US cultural history using the "Birmingham School" cultural studies approach developed in Britain in the 1970s to which Denning himself was a contributor. Simultaneously, it sought to recover a home-grown analytical and radical tradition, by looking at the early contributions of loosely analogous intellectual tendencies situated in the US labor movement in the quarter century or so after the …

Direct Observation Of Phase Transition Dynamics In Suspensions Of Soft Colloidal Hydrogel Particles, Jae Kyu Cho, Zhiyong Meng, L. Andrew Lyon, Victor Breedveld Jan 2008

Direct Observation Of Phase Transition Dynamics In Suspensions Of Soft Colloidal Hydrogel Particles, Jae Kyu Cho, Zhiyong Meng, L. Andrew Lyon, Victor Breedveld

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Due to the tunability of their softness and volume as a function of temperature, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (pNIPAm) hydrogel particles have emerged as a model system for soft colloidal spheres. By introducing AAc as comonomer, one can also tune the particle volume via pH. We report on the phase behavior of these stimuli-responsive colloids as measured with a microdialysis cell. This device, which integrates microfluidics with Particle Tracking Video-microscopy allows for simple and quick investigation of the phase behavior of suspensions the soft colloidal hydrogel as a function of pH as well as its packing density. In particular, we demonstrate the existence …

Sexuality Education For Youth In Maharashtra: Yes Or No?, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips) Jan 2008

Sexuality Education For Youth In Maharashtra: Yes Or No?, International Institute For Population Sciences (Iips)

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

Serious reservations have been expressed in Maharashtra about the sexuality component of programs intended to build awareness of safe and healthy behaviors for school-going youth. This policy brief answers: Is there a need for sexuality education in school and out-of-school in Maharashtra? Are the concerns expressed supported by evidence? Evidence was obtained from the Youth in India: Situation and Needs study conducted in Maharashtra, which explored young people’s awareness of sexual and reproductive matters, sexual experiences of youth, parent–child communication on sexual and reproductive matters, and experience and acceptability of sexuality education programs. Parents were asked whether they had discussed …

Analysis Of The N-Glycans Of Recombinant Human Factor Ix Purified From Transgenic Pig Milk, Geun-Cheol Gil, William H. Velander, Kevin E. Van Cott Jan 2008

Analysis Of The N-Glycans Of Recombinant Human Factor Ix Purified From Transgenic Pig Milk, Geun-Cheol Gil, William H. Velander, Kevin E. Van Cott

Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Faculty Publications

Glycosylation of recombinant proteins is of particular

importance because it can play significant roles in the

clinical properties of the glycoprotein. In this work, the

N-glycan structures of recombinant human Factor IX (tg-

FIX) produced in the transgenic pig mammary gland were

determined. Themajority of theN-glycans of transgenic pigderived

Factor IX (tg-FIX) are complex, bi-antennary with

one or two terminal N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac) moieties.

We also found that the N-glycan structures of tg-FIX

produced in the porcine mammary epithelial cells differed

with respect to N-glycans from glycoproteins produced in

other porcine tissues. tg-FIX contains …

Redefining Art As An Experience, Pedro Zasciurinskis Lopes Jan 2008

Redefining Art As An Experience, Pedro Zasciurinskis Lopes

HIM 1990-2015

Art is present in nearly every aspect of our lives. The concept of art, however, is not easy to define. When discussing the subject of art, one must consider experience, art, and the aesthetic. These three concepts complement each other, but are difficult to distinguish. As a result, meaningful and coherent discussions about art are difficult to achieve. I believe that in order to discuss what good art, meaningful art, fine art, and useful art are, one must first have a clear understanding of what art is. In this thesis I attempt to build a foundation for meaningful discussion about …

Propagation Of Local Disturbances In Reaction Diffusion Systems Modeling Quadratic Autocatalysis, Xinfu Chen, Yuanwei Qi Jan 2008

Propagation Of Local Disturbances In Reaction Diffusion Systems Modeling Quadratic Autocatalysis, Xinfu Chen, Yuanwei Qi

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

This article studies the propagation of initial disturbance in a quadratic autocatalytic chemical reaction in one-dimensional slab geometry, where two chemical species A, called the reactant, and B, called the autocatalyst, are involved in the simple scheme A + B - > 2B. Experiments demonstrate that chemical systems for which quadratic or cubic catalysis forms a key step can support propagating chemical wavefronts. When the autocatalyst is introduced locally into an expanse of the reactant, which is initially at uniform concentration, the developing reaction is often observed to generate two wavefronts, which propagate outward from the initial reaction zone. We show …

Improving Presence Theory Through Experiential Design, Dustin B. Chertoff, Sae Lynne Schatz, Rudy Mcdaniel, Clint A. Bowers Jan 2008

Improving Presence Theory Through Experiential Design, Dustin B. Chertoff, Sae Lynne Schatz, Rudy Mcdaniel, Clint A. Bowers

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Despite ongoing research over the last 15 years, the presence construct remains somewhat limited in its ability to be applied beyond the sensory domain. In order to increase its usefulness for applied challenges (e.g., using presence theory to enhance simulators' effectiveness), a discussion about a new conceptual ization of presence is introduced. This novel perspective on presence is rooted in the notion of "experiential design," an approach businesses use to create strategically compelling and memorable experiences. The paper begins with a brief review of presence and then a description of the concepts of experimental design. Following this, a theoretical model …

A Point Mutation In The Two-Component Regulator Phop-Phor Accounts For The Absence Of Polyketide-Derived Acyltrehaloses But Not That Of Phthiocerol Dimycocerosates In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis H37ra, Marie-Laure Chesne-Seck, Nathalie Barilone, Frédéric Boudou, Jesús Gonzalo Asensio, Pappachan E. Kolattukudy, Carlos Martín, Stewart T. Cole, Brigitte Gicquel, Deshmukh N. Gopaul, Mary Jackson

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Similarities between Mycobacterium tuberculosis phoP-phoR mutants and the attenuated laboratory strain M. tuberculosis H37Ra in terms of morphological and cytochemical properties, lipid content, gene expression and virulence attenuation prompted us to analyze the functionality of this two-component regulator in the latter strain. Sequence analysis revealed a base substitution resulting in a one-amino-acid change in the likely DNA-binding region of PhoP in H37Ra relative to H37Rv. Using gel-shift assays, we show that this mutation abrogates the ability of the H37Ra PhoP protein to bind to a 40-bp segment of its own promoter. Consistent with this result, the phoP gene from H37Rv …

Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulence On The Scintillation And Fade Probability Of Flattened Gaussian Beams, Doris C. Cowan, Larry C. Andrews Jan 2008

Effects Of Atmospheric Turbulence On The Scintillation And Fade Probability Of Flattened Gaussian Beams, Doris C. Cowan, Larry C. Andrews

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

In an attempt to mitigate the effects of the atmosphere on the coherence of an optical (laser) beam, interest has recently been shown in changing the beam shape to determine if a different power distribution at the transmitter will reduce the effects of random fluctuations in the refractive index. Here, a model is developed for the field of a flattened Gaussian beam as it propagates through atmospheric turbulence, and the resulting effects on the scintillation of the beam and beam wander are determined. A comparison of these results is made with the like effects on a standard TEM(00) Gaussian beam. …

Pump Polarization-State Preservation Of Picosecond Generated White-Light Supercontinuum, Leonardo De Boni, Carlos Toro, Florencio E. Hernández Jan 2008

Pump Polarization-State Preservation Of Picosecond Generated White-Light Supercontinuum, Leonardo De Boni, Carlos Toro, Florencio E. Hernández

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Supercontinuum (SC) generation is among the most interesting nonlinear optical effects lately discovered, due to the complexity of the mechanisms responsible for its generation. This phenomenon, first demonstrated by Alfano and Shapiro using picosecond pulses in condensed phase, has found novel applications in optical pulse compression, timeresolved spectroscopy and material characterization among many others. Here, we demonstrate that picosecond generated SC white-light in water preserves the polarization state: linear, elliptical and circular of the pump source. Moreover, we were able to determine the SC polarization rotation direction in the circular case. With the generation of pulsed circularly polarized SC, new …

Extraordinarily Wide-View Circular Polarizers For Liquid Crystal Displays, Zhibing Ge, Ruibo Lu, Thomas X. Wu, Shin-Tson Wu, Chao-Lien Lin, Nai-Chin Hsu, Wang-Yang Li, Chung-Kuang Wei

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A new broadband wide-view circular polarizer is proposed for high transmittance multi-domain vertical-alignment liquid crystal displays (MVA LCDs). This configuration only requires one biaxial plate in the conventional circular polarizer. The optimal film parameters are obtained analytically through spherical trigonometric method on the Poincare sphere and through computer-aided parameter search method. According to this design, the high transmittance MVA LCD exhibits a contrast ratio CR > 200: 1 over similar to 80 degrees viewing cone.

Nanowire Grid Polarizer For Energy Efficient And Wide-View Liquid Crystal Displays, Zhibing Ge, Shin-Tson Wu

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

We report a liquid crystal display (LCD) using a nanowire grid polarizer (NWGP) to replace the bottom sheet linear polarizer (LP). The top LP and bottom NWGP configurations enable backlight recycling for enhancing optical efficiency while keeping a high contrast ratio and wide viewing angle. The electro-optic performance of this device configuration is studied based on the effective-medium theory and 4 x 4 matrix method. Results show that this configuration exhibits a 100: 1 contrast ratio over 75 S viewing cone in a film-compensated multidomain vertical alignment LCD and 10: 1 over 65 S viewing cone in a fringe-field switching …

Single Cell Gap And Wide-View Transflective Liquid Crystal Display Using Fringe Field Switching And Embedded Wire Grid Polarizer, Zhibing Ge, Thomas X. Wu, Shin-Tson Wu Jan 2008

Single Cell Gap And Wide-View Transflective Liquid Crystal Display Using Fringe Field Switching And Embedded Wire Grid Polarizer, Zhibing Ge, Thomas X. Wu, Shin-Tson Wu

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

A single cell gap and wide-view transflective liquid crystal display (TR-LCD) using fringe field switching and embedded wire grid polarizer as polarization dependent reflector is developed. Such a device structure does not require any quarter-wave plate or in-cell phase retarder. Through optimizing the pixel electrode width and gap, high transmittance and reflectance and a single gamma curve are obtained. Potential application of this TR-LCD for mobile displays is emphasized. Rapid Nanoparticle-Mediated Monitoring Of Bacterial Metabolic Activity And Assessment Of Antimicrobial Susceptibility In Blood With Magnetic Relaxation, Charalambos Kaittanis, Sudip Nath, J. Manuel Perez

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Considering the increased incidence of bacterial infections and the emergence of multidrug resistant bacteria at the global level, we designed superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles as nanosensors for the assessment of antimicrobial susceptibility through magnetic relaxation. In this report, we demonstrate that iron oxide nanosensors, either dextran-coated supplemented with Con A or silica-coated conjugated directly to Con A, can be used for the fast (1) quantification of polysaccharides, (2) assessment of metabolic activity and (3) determination of antimicrobial susceptibility in blood. The use of these polysaccharide nanosensors in the determination of antimicrobial susceptibility in the clinic or the field, and the …

Reelin Induces A Radial Glial Phenotype In Human Neural Progenitor Cells By Activation Of Notch-I, Serene Keilani, Kiminobu Sugaya Jan 2008

Reelin Induces A Radial Glial Phenotype In Human Neural Progenitor Cells By Activation Of Notch-I, Serene Keilani, Kiminobu Sugaya

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Background: Reelin and Notch-I signaling pathways have been recently found to be necessary to induce the expression of brain lipid binding protein ( BLBP) and to promote the process extension and the maturation of the neuronal progenitors, the radial glial cells. In this study, we report the cross talk between these two pathways. Results: Both in vitro Reelin treatment and overexpression of Notch-I intracellular domain (NICD) induced BLBP expression and a radial glial phenotype in an immortalized human neural progenitor (HNP) cell line, isolated from the cortex of 14 weeks old fetus. Reelin treatment increased the level of NICD, indicating …

Numerical Study Of Surface Plasmon Enhanced Nonlinear Absorption And Refraction, Dana C. Kohlgraf-Owens, Pieter G. Kik Jan 2008

Numerical Study Of Surface Plasmon Enhanced Nonlinear Absorption And Refraction, Dana C. Kohlgraf-Owens, Pieter G. Kik

Faculty Bibliography 2000s

Maxwell Garnett effective medium theory is used to study the influence of silver nanoparticle induced field enhancement on the nonlinear response of a Kerr-type nonlinear host. We show that the composite nonlinear absorption coefficient, beta(c), can be enhanced relative to the host nonlinear absorption coefficient near the surface plasmon resonance of silver nanoparticles. This enhancement is not due to a resonant enhancement of the host nonlinear absorption, but rather due to a phase-shifted enhancement of the host nonlinear refractive response. The enhancement occurs at the expense of introducing linear absorption, alpha(c), which leads to an overall reduced figure of merit …
