Corrosion Inhibition Of Self-Assembled Films On Iron By Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy, Yuan-Yuan Feng, Shen-Hao Chen, Juan-Juan Zhou, Wen-Juan Guo
Journal of Electrochemistry
The self-assembled films of tetradecylamine were formed on iron surface, and the inhibition ability of which for iron corrosion in 0.5 mol/L H2SO4 solutions was studied by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy technique. Results indicated that longer immersion time would result in stronger inhibition ability of the films. The maximal inhibition efficiency(IE) of the tetradecylamine films was 68.7%. When the tetradecylamine films were modified by dodecylthiol, the mixed films became denser and more stable, thus the inhibition ability increased remarkably. The η of the mixed films increased to 78.2%.

Stable isotope mass-balance modeling results of meteoric δ18O values from the Cenomanian Stage of the Cretaceous Western Interior Basin (KWIB) suggest that precipitation and evaporation fluxes were greater than that of the present and significantly different from simulations of Albian KWIB paleohydrology. Sphaerosiderite meteoric δ18O values have been compiled from the Lower Tuscaloosa Formation of southwestern Mississippi (25°N paleolatitude), The Dakota Formation Rose Creek Pit, Fairbury Nebraska (35°N) and the Dunvegan Formation of eastern British Columbia (55°N paleolatitude). These paleosol siderite δ18O values define a paleolatitudinal gradient ranging from − 4.2‰ VPDB at 25°N …

Developmental Aspects Of Diabetes Knowledge, Kari Morgan
Theses and Dissertations
The Test of Diabetes Knowledge (TDK) was studied to determine its appropriateness for children. Early onset diabetes was examined for residual effects on poorer adolescent understanding of diabetes and problem solving that could affect self-care behaviors. Participant groups were created as children (<12) and adolescents (≥12). A second division created a group of adolescents with early onset disease (EOD < 12 years) and with late onset disease (LOD >12 years). Participants were predominantly Caucasian and from middle class families. 51% were boys with an average age of 12.95 years, disease duration of 4.35 years and onset age of 8.58 years. Children scored significantly lower and responded “I don’t know” significantly more often for all levels of knowledge when compared to adolescents. EOD and LOD group …12)>

We have investigated the aggregation and dissociation dynamics of 6-nm size Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated by tetra methyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) and the same size γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles precipitated inside an alginate hydrogel matrix, both in aqueous suspensions, using dc magnetic-field-induced time-dependent light scattering patterns. For the Fe3O4 ferrofluid, a strong anisotropy in light scattering was observed for light propagating perpendicular to the magnetic field. This behavior is attributed to the aggregation of the nanoparticles into chain-like and column-like structures oriented parallel to the magnetic field. A significantly different behavior is observed for the aqueous suspension of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles precipitated in alginate …

We present the results of the first ice sheet model inter comparison project for higher-order and full-Stokes ice sheet models. These models are compared and verified in a series of six experiments of which one has an analytical solution obtained from a perturbation analysis. The experiments are applied to both 2-D and 3-D geometries; five experiments are steady-state diagnostic, and one has a time dependent prognostic solution. All participating models give results that are in close agreement. A clear distinction can be made between higher-order models and those that solve the full system of equations. The full-Stokes models show a …

Adolescent Adherence To Orthopedic Brace Wear: A Behavioral Assessment Of High Risk Factors, Teresa J. Lynch
Adolescent Adherence To Orthopedic Brace Wear: A Behavioral Assessment Of High Risk Factors, Teresa J. Lynch
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
An important challenge physicians encounter when treating adolescent patients with moderate scoliotic curves is that the adolescents may not wear the brace as prescribed or long enough for the brace to be effective. The present investigation used electronic monitoring and temperature probes to investigate whether the adolescents were wearing their brace during events identified using a modified Daily Reconstruction Method for six randomly selected days over a 14-day period. It was hypothesized that environmental, interpersonal, and intrapersonal variables during the events would be predictive of objective brace-wear across and within participants, and patterns of significant variables would differ from subjective …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The paradigm of game theory and its application have aroused increasing interest among researchers in multidisciplinary settings. An information society involves more opportunities and uncertainties; therefore, game theory is expected more often than ever to provide insights into different types of issues of decision-making in economics, management, political science, psychology, and philosophy. A library and its administration, as an important market player in an information society, should have a better understanding about the nature of games and strategies as well. This article starts with a brief introduction to game theory, reviews selected literature, and emphasizes the application of game theory …

Confidence Intervals For Negative Binomial Random Variables Of High Dispersion, David Shilane, Alan E. Hubbard, S N. Evans
Confidence Intervals For Negative Binomial Random Variables Of High Dispersion, David Shilane, Alan E. Hubbard, S N. Evans
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
This paper considers the problem of constructing confidence intervals for the mean of a Negative Binomial random variable based upon sampled data. When the sample size is large, we traditionally rely upon a Normal distribution approximation to construct these intervals. However, we demonstrate that the sample mean of highly dispersed Negative Binomials exhibits a slow convergence to the Normal in distribution as a function of the sample size. As a result, standard techniques (such as the Normal approximation and bootstrap) that construct confidence intervals for the mean will typically be too narrow and significantly undercover in the case of high …
