Globular Clusters In The Outer Galactic Halo: Am-1 And Palomar 14, Aaron Dotter, Ata Sarajedini, Soung-Chul Yang Aug 2008

Globular Clusters In The Outer Galactic Halo: Am-1 And Palomar 14, Aaron Dotter, Ata Sarajedini, Soung-Chul Yang

Dartmouth Scholarship

AM-1, at ~120 kpc, and Palomar 14 (Pal 14), at ~70 kpc, are two of the most distant Galactic globular clusters (GCs) known. We present Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 photometry of AM-1 and Pal 14 that reveals unprecedented depth and detail in the color-magnitude diagrams of these two clusters. Absolute and relative age measurements confirm that both are younger than the inner halo GC M 3 by 1.5-2 Gyr assuming all three clusters have similar compositions. Thus AM-1 and Pal 14 join Pal 3, Pal 4, and Eridanus as distant GCs with red horizontal branches (HBs) …

Farm Gate Nutrient Balances In South West Western Australia – An Overview, Rebecca Ovens, David Weaver, Nardia Keipert, Simon Neville, Robert Summers, Martin Clarke Aug 2008

Farm Gate Nutrient Balances In South West Western Australia – An Overview, Rebecca Ovens, David Weaver, Nardia Keipert, Simon Neville, Robert Summers, Martin Clarke

Conference papers and presentations

Farm-gate nutrient budgets can be used to identify the efficiency of nutrient use within and between individual enterprises and catchments, and may be used to represent a component of the risk that particular landuses represent to water quality. Over the past 5 years, more than 400 farm-gate nutrient balance audits have been conducted across a range of catchments and landuses in southwest Western Australia (WA). Values for nutrient use efficiency and surpluses across landuses and catchments are reported. Patterns of nitrogen and phosphorus signatures closely reflect one another across landuses, though nitrogen input, output and surplus values are consistently higher …

Sspnd –Support System For Phosphorus And Nitrogen Decisions – Modeling Of Management Practices Can Guide The Way Ahead, Simon Neville, David Weaver, Rebecca Ovens, Nardia Keipert, Robert Summers, Martin Clarke

Conference papers and presentations

Algal blooms in rivers and estuarine waters in south west Western Australia are a symptomatic response to excess nutrient input. Whilst a range of Best Management Practices (BMPs) are available to reduce the causes of phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) pollution, most investment has been directed towards symptoms. In order to treat nutrient pollution causes effectively, possible nutrient reductions and the likely adoption costs of a range of BMPs require evaluation. Catchment-scale evaluation of implementation scenarios offers insights not possible through long term on-ground implementation and performance monitoring, and assists community groups and government to respond to pollution issues through …

A New Method For Constructing Exact Tests Without Making Any Assumptions, Karl H. Schlag Aug 2008

A New Method For Constructing Exact Tests Without Making Any Assumptions, Karl H. Schlag

COBRA Preprint Series

We present a new method for constructing exact distribution-free tests (and con…fidence intervals) for variables that can generate more than two possible outcomes. This method separates the search for an exact test from the goal to create a non- randomized test. Randomization is used to extend any exact test relating to means of variables with fi…nitely many outcomes to variables with outcomes belonging to a given bounded set. Tests in terms of variance and covariance are reduced to tests relating to means. Randomness is then eliminated in a separate step. This method is used to create con…fidence intervals for the …

Biological Sciences

One of the challenges for model prediction and validation is providing them with data of appropriate spatial and temporal resolution. The maturation and increased application of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in aquatic environments allows systematic data collection on these model-relevant scales. The goal of this study was to apply a fine-scale circulation and transport model (Delft3D) to improve AUV mission planning and use data collected by the AUV to evaluate and improve model performance. A dye release was conducted in a tidally dominated embayment, and a planning phase model based on the best available data was used as a baseline …

A Generic Approach And Framework For Managing Complex Information, Essam Mansour Aug 2008

A Generic Approach And Framework For Managing Complex Information, Essam Mansour

Doctoral

Several application domains, such as healthcare, incorporate domain knowledge into their day-to-day activities to standardise and enhance their performance. Such incorporation produces complex information, which contains two main clusters (active and passive) of information that have internal connections between them. The active cluster determines the recommended procedure that should be taken as a reaction to specific situations. The passive cluster determines the information that describes these situations and other descriptive information plus the execution history of the complex information. In the healthcare domain, a medical patient plan is an example for complex information produced during the disease management activity from …

Adiabatic Shape Preservation And Solitary Waves In A Five-Level Atomic Medium, Foek T. Hioe

Physics Faculty/Staff Publications

Adiabatically shape-preserving-wave and solitary-wave solutions for five-level atomic systems are presented. They give the idealized situations for the shape preserving propagation of optical waves through a five-level atomic medium, and provide some useful comparisons with the electromagnetically induced transparency experiments performed by Harris and his collaborators on atoms with hyperfine structure.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this research study was to gather data on a sample of technology teacher candidates in order to determine how many graduates with a technology teaching endorsement actually entered the teaching profession. In addition, data were collected to investigate the attrition rate of the same pool of candidates. For those who left the education profession, the study also examined how long these individuals taught before leaving as well as investigated the reasons these individuals decided to leave the technology teaching profession. For those who have remained in the teaching profession this study also explored their reasons for remaining …

Testing Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Methods Against The Fluid Equations In The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, William R. Somers Aug 2008

Testing Direct Simulation Monte Carlo Methods Against The Fluid Equations In The Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer, William R. Somers

Theses and Dissertations

A Direct Simulation Monte Carlo fluid dynamics code named FENIX has been employed to study gas flow-through properties of the inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Simulation data have been tested against the Navier-Stokes and heat equations in order to see if FENIX functions properly. The Navier-Stokes and heat equations have been constructed from simulation data and are compared term by term. This comparison shows that FENIX is able to correctly reproduce fluid dynamics throughout the ICP-MS simulation, with an exception immediately behind the ICP-MS sampler cone, where the continuum criterion for the Navier-Stokes equation is not met. Testing the …

Doping A Semiconductor To Create An Unconventional Metal, N. Manyala, J. F. Ditusa, G. Aeppli, A. P. Ramirez

Faculty Publications

Landau-Fermi liquid theory, with its pivotal assertion that electrons in metals can be simply understood as independent particles with effective masses replacing the free electron mass, has been astonishingly successful. This is true despite the Coulomb interactions an electron experiences from the host crystal lattice, lattice defects and the other ∼1022 cm -3 electrons. An important extension to the theory accounts for the behaviour of doped semiconductors. Because little in the vast literature on materials contradicts Fermi liquid theory and its extensions, exceptions have attracted great attention, and they include the high-temperature superconductors, silicon-based field-effect transistors that host two-dimensional metals, …

Geometric Phases And Bloch-Sphere Constructions For Su (N) Groups With A Complete Description Of The Su(4) Group, D. Uskov, A. R.P. Rau Aug 2008

Geometric Phases And Bloch-Sphere Constructions For Su (N) Groups With A Complete Description Of The Su(4) Group, D. Uskov, A. R.P. Rau

Faculty Publications

A two-sphere ("Bloch" or ''Poincare'') is familiar for describing the dynamics of a spin- 1/2 particle or light polarization. Analogous objects are derived for unitary groups larger than SU(2) through an iterative procedure that constructs evolution operators for higher-dimensional SU (N) in terms of lower-dimensional ones. We focus, in particular, on the SU(4) of two qubits which describes all possible logic gates in quantum computation and entangled states in quantum-information sciences. For a general Hamiltonian of SU(4) with 15 parameters, and for Hamiltonians of its various subgroups so that fewer parameters suffice, we derive Bloch-like rotation of unit vectors analogous …

Strengthening The Capacity Of Helping Professionals To Provide Psychosocial Support To Communities Affected By Armed Conflict : The Evaluation Of One Program, Arden Elise O'Donnell

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored the transferring of skills, knowledge, and awareness of trainees in a Training-of-Trainers program in Northern Uganda, which was aimed at strengthening the capacity of helping professionals to provide psychosocial support to communities affected by armed conflict. Through the examination of a series of questionnaires administered to the trainees, this paper assesses how the direct transfer of knowledge and skills changed to awareness for trainees over time. This study also addresses how these findings contribute to a greater understanding of the model as well as suggestions surrounding the implications of the transfer of the model across the fields …

Biologically Relevant Multiple Sequence Alignment, Hyrum D. Carroll Aug 2008

Biologically Relevant Multiple Sequence Alignment, Hyrum D. Carroll

Theses and Dissertations

Researchers use multiple sequence alignment algorithms to detect conserved regions in genetic sequences and to identify drug docking sites for drug development. In this dissertation, a novel algorithm is presented for using physicochemical properties to increase the accuracy of multiple sequence alignments. Secondary structures are also incorporated in the evaluation function. Additionally, the location of the secondary structures is assimilated into the function. Multiple properties are combined with weights, determined from prediction accuracies of protein secondary structures using artificial neural networks. A new metric, the PPD Score is developed, that captures the average change in physicochemical properties. Using the physicochemical …

Quantitative Phase Imaging Microscopy With Multi-Wavelength Optical Phase Unwrapping, Nilanthi Warnasooriya Aug 2008

Quantitative Phase Imaging Microscopy With Multi-Wavelength Optical Phase Unwrapping, Nilanthi Warnasooriya

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents a quantitative phase imaging microscopy technique that combines phase-shifting interferometry with multi-wavelength optical phase unwrapping. The technique consists of a Michelson-type interferometer illuminated with any of three types of light sources; light emitting diodes, laser diodes and a ring dye laser. Interference images are obtained by using a 4-frame phase shifting method, and are combined to calculate the phase of the object surface. The 2π ambiguities are removed by repeating the experiment combining two and three different wavelengths, which yields phase images of effective wavelength much longer than the original. The resulting image is a profile of …

Dispersal Limitation And Climate-Related Environmental Gradients Structure Microcrustacean Composition In Freshwater Lakes, Ellesmere Island, Canada, Angela L. Strecker, Rebecca Milne, Shelley E. Arnott

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

Dramatic environmental change is expected in the Arctic, yet little is known about the occurrence and community composition of microcrustaceans in Arctic lakes and how this will be influenced by future environmental change. We sampled and calculated relative abundances of microcrustacean species in 54 lakes on Ellesmere Island, Canada. New species records on Ellesmere Island included Daphnia umbra, Tachidius discipes, and Artemeopsis stefanssoni. Daphnia middendorffiana/tenebrosa was the most common taxon and often dominated microcrustacean assemblages, likely a result of its pigmentation, which offers resistance to ultraviolet radiation. Species richness was positively associated with nutrients, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), temperature, calcium, …

Thermally Activated Switching In The Presence Of Non-Gaussian Noise, Lora Billings, Mark Dykman, Ira Schwartz Aug 2008

Thermally Activated Switching In The Presence Of Non-Gaussian Noise, Lora Billings, Mark Dykman, Ira Schwartz

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We study the effect of a non-Gaussian noise on interstate switching activated primarily by Gaussian noise. Even weak non-Gaussian noise can strongly change the switching rate. The effect is determined by all moments of the noise distribution. It is expressed in a closed form in terms of the noise characteristic functional. The analytical results are compared with the results of simulations for an overdamped system driven by white Gaussian noise and a Poisson noise. Switching induced by a purely Poisson noise is also discussed.

Fast Fourier Transform Algorithms With Applications, Todd Mateer Aug 2008

Fast Fourier Transform Algorithms With Applications, Todd Mateer

All Dissertations

This manuscript describes a number of algorithms that can be used to quickly evaluate a polynomial over a collection of points and interpolate these evaluations back into a polynomial. Engineers define the 'Fast Fourier Transform' as a method of solving the interpolation problem where the coefficient ring used to construct the polynomials has a special multiplicative structure. Mathematicians define the 'Fast Fourier Transform' as a method of solving the evaluation problem. One purpose of the document is to provide a mathematical treatment of the topic of the 'Fast Fourier Transform' that can also be understood by someone who has an …

Using Simulation Optimization To Construct Efficient Screening Strategies For Cervical Cancer, Christodoulos Foufoulides Aug 2008

Using Simulation Optimization To Construct Efficient Screening Strategies For Cervical Cancer, Christodoulos Foufoulides

Theses and Dissertations

Cervical cancer is the second most common type of cancer in women worldwide. Because cervical cancer is usually asymptomatic until the disease is in its advanced stages, cervical screening is of central importance towards combating cervical cancer. Alternative screening strategies are evaluated from an economic point of view through cost-effectiveness analysis. In the literature however, studies perform cost-effectiveness analysis on a limited number of de facto or predetermined screening policies. At present, no attempt has been made to construct efficient screening strategies through optimization, before cost-effectiveness analysis is applied. In this study simulation optimization is used to construct efficient screening …
